RESUMO

Plant-plant interactions under extreme environmental stress are still controversial. The stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) proposes that facilitation prevails under extreme environmental stresses, while an alternative view states that facilitation collapses or even switches back to competition at the extreme end of stress gradients. However, how the relationship between plant-plant interaction and periodic extreme flooding stress varies and its underlying mechanism are still unclear in a dam-regulated riparian ecosystem. We established a controlled experiment using two dominant species pairs (Cynodon dactylon-Cyperus rotundus and C. dactylon-Xanthium sibiricum) in the water level fluctuating zone of the Three Gorges Dam to examine their growth responses to the periodic extreme flooding stress. The results showed that as flooding stress increased, the competitive effect of C. dactylon on X. sibiricum shifted to facilitation, whereas the effect of X. sibiricum on C. dactylon maintained a strong inhibition. The plant height of X. sibiricum was the most important driver of the interaction between X. sibiricum and C. dactylon along the flooding gradient. The net effect of C. dactylon on C. rotundus shifted from neutral to negative, and the inhibitory effect of C. rotundus on C. dactylon became stronger at the extreme end of flooding stress. The root biomass of the two species was the key trait regulating their interaction with increasing flooding stress. Overall, the SGH was partially supported along our periodic extreme flooding stress gradient. Aboveground resource (light) might be the dominant factor driving the response of the interaction between annual plants and perennial clonal plants to periodic flooding stress, whereas belowground resource (water and nutrients) was probably the dominant factor for perennial clonal plants. Our study will help to further understand the environmental responses of plant-plant relationships and their regulatory mechanism, and the succession of riparian plant communities under extreme environmental changes, providing a basic theoretical basis and data support for the ecological restoration and management of riparian wetland vegetation.

RESUMO

In recent years, language function impairment caused by intracranial diseases has gained increasing interest, mainly due to its significant impact on the language and cognitive ability, leading to a serious decline in the quality of life of patients. Consequently, researchers aimed to clarify the quantitative degree of lesions of the arcuate fasciculus and therapeutic targets to promote nerve fiber remodeling. The arcuate fasciculus is extremely prone to damage caused by diseases such as stroke and brain tumor. Hallucinating schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic tinnitus, and other diseases can also lead to changes in the fractional anisotropy value of arcuate fasciculus; however, different studies have different conclusions about how this change occurs. To obtain a better understanding, more clinical studies are required. Owing to various advancements in neuroimaging, a better understanding and identification of vital targets for restoration of neurological function are possible. The arcuate fasciculus is stratified into three substructures, each having unique neurological functions. Both diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) sequences and deterministic monitoring techniques render it possible to visually and quantitatively analyze the substructure in three parts. In this review, we examined the progress of the arcuate fasciculus and quantitative DTI technology in recent years.

RESUMO

A functional response-effect approach could predict how environmental changes affect ecosystem functioning. However, few studies have applied this approach to inner saline-alkaline marsh ecosystems where soil saline-alkaline, flooding/drought and nutrients stresses threat ecological functioning. To disentangle the relationships between environmental conditions and ecosystem functioning, a total of 81 plots were investigated across 22 marsh sites dominated by Phragmites australis and Bolboschoenus planiculmis in Western Songnen Plain wetlands, China. For both plant communities combined, deep flooding supported communities with higher specific leaf area (SLA), plant height and leaf nitrogen (N) content but lower leaf thickness. On the contrary, high soil salt content induced low leaf N and phosphorus (P) content, SLA and plant height. Only light acquisition-related trait, plant height and SLA, was the key traits which determined the relationships between ecosystem functioning (aboveground biomass) and saline-alkaline wetland environment. Yet indirect key traits related nutrient and water acquisition such as leaf thickness, N and P content were also found, and mediated the response of aboveground biomass through the allometric relationships with plant height or SLA. For the individual species community, only plant height was the key trait shared by P. australis and B. planiculmis, indicating the universality of plant height as a key trait for grass and sedge plants to explain how ecosystem functioning responds to abiotic factors. Hence, our findings suggest that saltmarsh plants are more inclined to alter light-acquisition traits to mediate the response of ecosystem functioning to environmental changes and that plant height is a particularly useful trait to predict plant productivity in earth system models under future environmental changes in inner saline-alkaline wetlands.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features of glomuvenous malformation (GVM). Methods: Thirty-one cases of GVM diagnosed at the Henan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2011 to December 2021 were collected. Their clinical and pathological features were analyzed. The expression of relevant markers was examined using immunohistochemistry. The patients were also followed up. Results: There were 16 males and 15 females in this study, with an average age of 11 years (range, 1-52 years). The locations of the disease included 13 cases in the limbs (8 cases in the upper limbs, 5 cases in the lower limbs), 9 cases in the trunks, and 9 cases in the foot (toes or subungual area). Twenty-seven of the cases were solitary and 4 were multifocal. The lesions were characterized by blue-purple papules or plaques on the skin surface, which grew slowly. The lumps became larger and appeared to be conspicuous. Microscopically, GVM mainly involved the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, with an overall ill-defined border. There were scattered or clustered irregular dilated vein-like lumens, with thin walls and various sizes. A single or multiple layers of relatively uniform cubic/glomus cells were present at the abnormal wall, with scattered small nests of the glomus cells. The endothelial cells in the wall of abnormal lumen were flat or absent. Immunohistochemistry showed that glomus cells strongly expressed SMA, h-caldesmon, and collagen IV. Malformed vascular endothelial cells expressed CD31, CD34 and ERG. No postoperative recurrence was found in the 12 cases. Conclusions: GVM is an uncommon type of simple venous malformation in the superficial soft tissue and different from the classical glomus tumor. Morphologically, one or more layers of glomus cells grow around the dilated venous malformation-like lumen, which can be combined with common venous malformations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare neurological degenerative disorder with diverse manifestations and inadequate awareness. Only a few cases of NIID have been reported, and typical imaging findings can provide certain clues for the diagnosis of the disease. Furthermore, skin biopsy and genetic testing are important to confirm the diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: An 84-year-old man presented to the Neurology Department of our hospital complaining of a progressive course of cognitive impairment and unsteady gait for 2 years. The symptoms gradually progressed and affected his daily life. The patient was initially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and vascular dementia. The patient did not respond to conventional treatment, such as dopasehydrazine. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. Based on the imaging findings, we suspected an NIID diagnosis. During the 3-year follow-up in our hospital, his clinical symptoms gradually progressed, and imaging findings became more significant. A high signal intensity along the corticomedullary junction persisted on MRI. Gene testing and skin biopsy were recommended in our hospital; however, the patient refused these procedures. NIID was also considered when he went to a superior hospital in Shanghai. The patient eventually agreed to undergo gene testing. This revealed abnormal GGC repeat expansions in the NOTCH2NLC gene. CONCLUSION: The clinical manifestations of NIID are diverse. Patients with clinical manifestations similar to Parkinson's disease and dementia may have NIID.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the clinical and pathologic features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of congenital hemangioma (CH). Methods: Forty cases of CH were diagnosed from January 2017 to December 2020 in Henan Provincial People's Hospital. The clinical and pathological and immunohistochemical data were analyzed, with review of literature. Results: There were 24 male and 16 female patients. The lesions were located in the head, neck (11 cases), limbs (14 cases), and trunk (15 cases). The clinical manifestations were congenital painless plaques or masses, the larger ones protruded on the skin surface, mostly dusky purple or bright red, with surrounding white halos. Under low magnification, the tumor was lobular and well demarcated, composed of neo-microvascular lumen of different sizes. The vascular endothelial cells were cuboidal or hobnail in appearance, forming stellar drainage vessels within the lobules. Extra-medullary hematopoiesis was seen in one case of rapidly involuting CH; there were different number of tortuous and dilated vascular lumen between the lobular structures, and some non-involuting CH cases were vascular malformations, which were devoid of lobulated structures. Immunohistochemistry showed that endothelial cells were strongly positive for CD31, CD34 and ERG, while D2-40 and GLUT-1 were negative. Conclusions: CH is a benign congenital vascular tumor with characteristic lobulated growth and abnormal blood vessels in the stroma. Pathological diagnosis often needs to be differentiated from infantile hemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma and vascular malformation.

RESUMO

Theranotics, an integrated diagnosis and treatment nanoplatform technology based on nanomaterials, integrates the diagnosis and treatment of diseases seamlessly and shows a broad prospect in medical practice. With the rapid development of nanomedicine, the technology of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesis is becoming more and more mature. MNPs have controllable shape and particle size, admirable stability and biocompatibility, excellent magnetic properties, and can be readily chemically modified. These advantages make them widely used in clinical practice, such as diagnosis, targeted drug delivery, medical imaging, hyperthermia therapy, and radiotherapy, which also make MNPs high-quality materials for integrated diagnosis and treatment platforms. In this paper, the research progress of MNPs in the areas of magnetically guided drug delivery, magnetic thermotherapy, and multimodal imaging was reviewed; their advantages as an integrated platform for diagnosis and treatment were discussed; and the problems faced in research and application prospects were summarized and outlooked.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture preconditioning at "Zusanli"(ST36,Lower Confluent point) and "Zhongwan"(CV12,Front-Mu point) combination on oxidative stress and inflammation-related indicators, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and inhibitor-α of nuclear transcription factor κB (IκB-α) in serum and gastric tissue of rats with stress gastric ulcer(SGU),so as to explore its mechanisms underlying prevention of SGU. METHODS: A total of 36 Wistar rats were randomly divided into blank control, model, positive drug and He-Sea-Front-Mu point combination groups (n=9 in each group). A rat model of SGU was established by restraint water-immersion stress method. Ten days before mode-ling, rats in the He-Sea-Front-Mu point combination group received electroacupuncture (2 Hz, 0.6 mA)at ST36 and CV12 for 10 min once every other day for 10 days, and those in the positive drug group was treated by gavage of omeprazole (20 mg/kg) once every other day for 10 days. The morphology of the gastric mucosa was observed by naked eyes and hematoxylin-eosin staining, and the ulcer index (UI) and lesion score were calculated. TBA and colorimetric methods, ELISA and Western blot were used to detect malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and the relative expressions of TLR4, MyD88, and IκB-α protein, separately. RESULTS: The gastric mucosa of rats in the blank control group was smooth and intact, the cells were arranged neatly, and there was no telangiec-tasia, hyperemia and inflammatory cell infiltration. The gastric mucosal epithelial structure of rats in the model group was destroyed, and a large number of mucosal epithelial cell death and inflammatory cell infiltration were seen. The degree of gastric mucosal injury and inflammatory cell infiltration in the positive drug group and the combined point group was less than that in the model group. Compared with the blank control group, the UI and lesion score of rats in the model group were significantly increased (P<0.05), the levels of MDA and MPO in the serum and gastric tissues were significantly increased (P<0.05), GSH-Px was significantly reduced (P<0.05), the contents of TNF-α and IL-6 in serum were markedly increased (P<0.05), the expression levels of TLR4 and MyD88 proteins in gastric tissue were significantly increased (P<0.05), IκB-α was significantly reduced (P<0.05). After intervention and in comparison with the model group showed that, the UI and lesion score, the levels of MDA and MPO, contents of serum TNF-α and IL-6, expression levels of TLR4 and MyD88 proteins in positive drug and He-Sea-Front-Mu point combination groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05), while GSH-Px and IκB-α were significantly increased (P<0.05); There were no significant differences in the above indicators between the positive drug and the He-Sea-Front -Mu point combination groups (except TNF-α). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture preconditioning at ST36 and CV12 can prevent SGU, which may be related to its effects in anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and regulating TLR4/MyD88/IκB signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Copy number variation (CNV) influences the mRNA transcription levels and phenotypic traits through gene dosage, position effects, alteration of downstream pathways, and modulation of the structure and position of chromosomes. A previous study using the read depth approach to genome resequencing analysis revealed CNVs of the choline kinase beta (CHKB) gene in the copy number variable regions (CNVRs) of yak breeds may influence muscle development and therefore the phenotypic traits of yak breeds. Further work is required to attain a more complete understanding and validate the importance of the detected CNVR of the CHKB gene found in yak breeds, because there is no association studies of the CHKB gene with yak growth traits that have been reported. The goal of this study was to determine the distribution of CHKB copy numbers in five Chinese domestic yak breeds and evaluate their impact on gene expression and growth traits. The data were analyzed using real-time quantitative PCR. In this study, the normal CNV of the CHKB gene was found to be significantly (p < 0.05) associated with greater chest girth and body weight for three age groups of Datong yaks. Our results indicated that the copy number of the CHKB gene is negatively correlated with the mRNA expression level. From this result, we conclude that CNVs of the CHKB gene could be novel markers for growth traits of Chinese domestic yak breeds and might therefore provide a novel opportunity to utilize data on CNVs in designing molecular markers for the selection of animal breeding programs for larger populations of various yaks.

RESUMO

Valeriana jatamansi (syn. V. wallichii), a traditional Chinese medicine recorded in Chinese Pharmacopeia (1977 and 2010 edition), has been used for treatment of a variety of conditions including sleep problems, obesity, nervous disorders, epilepsy, insanity, snake poisoning, eye trouble, and skin diseases. Also, it was used as an important substitute for the European V. officinalis, whose root preparation, popularly known as valerian, has been employed as a mild sedative for a long time. In recent years, much attention has been draw to the iridoids, one of the major bioactive constituents of V. jatamansi, leading to the discovery of a series of new iridoids with anti-tumor and neuroprotective activities. Their action machnism also has been discussed. This paper summerized the iridoids and their bioactivities from V. jatamansi in recent years, which could provide basic foundation for development and research of V. jatamansi.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the leading causes for death in both developed and developing countries and it is the single largest cause of death in the United States, responsible for 1 out of every 6 deaths. The objective of this study was to determine microRNA (miRNA) expression in AMI and determine whether miR-133, miR-1291 and miR-663b could be measured in plasma as a biomarker for recurrence. METHODS: Patients with AMI and those without AMI were retrospectively recruited for a comparison of their plasma miR-133, miR-1291 and miR-663b expression. RESULTS: miR-133, miR-1291 and miR-663b levels were significantly overexpressed in AMI compared with Non-AMI. MiR-133 showed an AUC of 0.912, with a sensitivity of 81.1% and a specificity of 91.2%. The AUC for miR-1291 was 0.695, with a sensitivity of 78.4% and a specificity of 89.5%. The AUC for miR-663b was 0.611, with a sensitivity of 72.4% and a specificity of 76.5%. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the levels of miR-133, miR-1291 and miR-663b are associated with AMI. The potential of these miRNAs as biomarkers to improve patient stratification according to the risk of AMI and as circulating biomarkers for the AMI progonos warrants further study.
