BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the incidence, topographical distribution, morphology, and interrelationship of the metopism and Wormian bones (WBs) in dry adult-Chinese skulls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 285 dried adult-Chinese skull specimens from the Department of Anatomy at the Southern Medical University were examined. The incidence of different types of metopism and WBs were recorded. The length of the metopic suture was measured using a flexible ruler. Additionally, the lengths and widths of the WBs were measured using a vernier calliper. RESULTS: The incidence of metopism and WBs in Chinese adults were estimated at 10.18% (29/285) and 63.86% (182/285), respectively. The metopism always accompanied WBs (26/29, 89.66%), but the WBs did not necessarily accompany metopism (26/182, 14.29%). The locations of the WBs in the order of decreasing incidence were the lambdoid suture (78.57%, 143/182), pterion (34.62%, 63/182), asterion (12.09%, 22/182), lambda (8.24%, 15/182), sagittal suture (4.95%, 9/182), and Inca bone (3.85%, 7/182). These locations differed in topographical distribution and morphological patterns. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese adults differ in incidence of metopism and WBs from adults of other races, indicating racial differences. The characteristics of WBs vary depending on the cranial site of occurrence. The metopism always accompanies WBs, but the WBs do not necessarily accompany metopism.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to investigate the impact of two Nrf2 agonists, tBHQ and 4-Octyl Itaconate, on nucleus pulposus (NP) degeneration and explore the underlying mechanism. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We isolated the NP cells from the disc tissue of disc herniation patients. NP cells were pretreated with an adequate dose of tBHQ, Itaconate, or the mixture of them, and then subjected to the Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) stimulation to induce degeneration. Besides, the Nrf2 gene silenced NP cells were also used as a comparison. Moreover, the LPS-treated NP cells were also cultured in the mix of tBHQ and Itaconate to determine whether the agonists affected reverse degeneration. RESULTS: LPS treatment suppressed Nrf2 expression and induced the NP cell degeneration with a decrease of cell viability and collagen II expression, an increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, inflammatory cytokine accumulation (IL-1ß, TNF-α), and apoptosis (Caspase3, Caspase8). However, tBHQ or Itaconate pretreated NP cells contained a higher level of Nrf2 protein and alleviated the negative effect caused by LPS, which was abolished with the silencing of Nrf2. Additionally, tBHQ showed a better ability to suppress ROS than Itaconate. Meanwhile, Itaconate inhibited a higher amount of IL-1ß and TNF-α than tBHQ. Interestingly, when NP cells were pretreated with both tBHQ and Itaconate, the result indicated an excellent anti-ROS and anti-inflammatory peculiarity. Furthermore, when NP cells suffered from LPS first and then treated with the agonist, the anti-ROS and anti-inflammatory effects remained. However, the cell viability, collagen II, and apoptotic degree were not improved. CONCLUSIONS: Both tBHQ and Itaconate effectively prevent NP cells from degeneration through anti-ROS and anti-inflammation, and the combined use of them may have better effects. But in comparison, their impact on reversing NP cell degeneration has yet to be proven.

AIM: To determine the features of caesarean scar ectopic pregnancy (CSP) by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the first trimester. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine women with CSP in the first trimester were initially selected and underwent transvaginal ultrasound and MRI examinations. Thirty-five patients with CSP were finally included in this study. RESULTS: The CSPs were categorized into three groups: type I, in which a thin-walled diverticulum is present at the caesarean section scar (CSS) defect and the gestational sac (GS) is embedded in the diverticulum; type II, in which a thin-walled diverticulum is present at the CSS defect and the GS is partially embedded in the diverticulum; type III, in which a niche is present in the CSS defect and the GS is mainly embedded in the isthmus. Types I, II, and III CSP occurred in 40, 46, and 14% of the women, respectively. There was no significant difference between the three types in the minimum thickness of the CSS defect. In types I and II, there was a positive correlation in the maximum inlet diameter of the CSS defect and the approximate area of the GS. CONCLUSION: Using MRI, most CSPs present as a diverticulum at the CSS defect, and the CSS defect becomes weaker with the growth of the GS. MRI showed detailed features of the CSP.

BACKGROUND: Although radiofrequency thermocoagulation is considered as a primary treatment for most patients with trigeminal neuralgia, neuronavigator-guided percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation has been rarely reported. The object of this study was to assess the clinical value of neuronavigator-guided percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. METHODS: The radiofrequency thermocoagulation was performed in 100 cases of trigeminal neuralgia. The patients were positioned supine or sitting, under Hartel's technique (reported by Sweet and Wepsic J Neurosurg 40:143-156, 1974), by anterior lateral facial approaches. The Gasserian ganglions were acupunctured, assisted by intraoperative CT scanning (3-digital reconstruction) and electrophysiology in order to accurately locate target. RESULTS: The needles located in oval foramen at the first puncture, the direction and position could be defined according to the electrophysiology examination. The pain alleviated immediately after operation. There occurred no serious complication and other nerve injury in all patients despite face numbness only. CONCLUSIONS: 3D-CT and electrophysiology Gasser's ganglion locations can raise the success rate of puncture, enhance the safety and reduce the incidence of complication, showing high academic value and its promising future.

Long term potentiation in hippocampus, evoked by high-frequency stimulation, is mediated by two major glutamate receptor subtypes, alpha-amino-3-hydroxyl-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate receptors and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. Receptor subunit composition and its interaction with cytoplasmic proteins constitute different pathways regulating synaptic plasticity. Here, we provide further evidence that N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor-mediated long term potentiation evoked at hippocampal CA1 region of rats induced by high-frequency stimulation of the Schaffer collateral-commissural pathway in vivo is not dependent on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit NR2B. Applying semi-quantitative immunoblotting, we found that in the whole tetanized hippocampus, synaptic expression of the N-methyl-D-aspartate and alpha-amino-3-hydroxyl-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate receptor subunits (NR1, NR2A, glutamate receptor 1) and their associated partners, e.g. synaptic associated protein 97, postsynaptic density protein 95, alpha subunit of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II, neuronal nitricoxide synthase, increased 180 min post-high-frequency stimulation. Moreover, phosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II at thr286 and glutamate receptor 1 at ser831 was increased 30 min post-high-frequency stimulation and blocked by N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists (AP-5 and MK-801). In sham group and controls, these changes were not observed. The expression of several other synaptic proteins (NR2B, glutamate receptors 2/3, N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor) was not affected by long term potentiation induction. In hippocampal homogenates, the level of these proteins remained unchanged. These data indicate that N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor-dependent long term potentiation in CA1 region in vivo mainly affects the synaptic expression of glutamate receptor subunits and associated proteins in the whole hippocampus. The alteration of molecular aspects can play a role in regulating the long-lasting synaptic modification in hippocampal long term potentiation in vivo.

RESUMO

Recombinant human glia maturation factor beta (GMF-beta) reversibly inhibits the proliferation of neoplastic cells in culture by arresting the cells in the G0/G1 phase. This phenomenon is not target-cell specific, as neural and nonneural cells are equally inhibited. When tested simultaneously, GMF-beta suppresses the mitogenic effect of acidic fibroblasts growth factor (aFGF), but the two are synergistic in promoting the morphologic differentiation of cultured astrocytes. GMF-beta also counteracts the growth-stimulating effect of pituitary extract and cholera toxin on Schwann cells. The results underscore the regulatory role of GMF-beta and its intricate interaction with the mitogenic growth factors.

Infrared (vibrational) circular dichroism (VCD) has been observed for the DNA models d(CG)5, poly(dG-dC).poly(dG-dC), poly(dG).poly(dC), poly(dA-dT).poly(dA-dT), and poly(dA).poly(dT) in the B-conformation in buffered, aqueous solution. The observed results are quantitatively interpreted in terms of the exciton model for coupled carbonyl stretching vibrational states.

Cell nuclear DNA content was determined by flow cytometric analysis in 36 patients with esophageal carcinoma. Aneuploid DNA content was observed in 25 cases (69.4%). The relationships among DNA content, histopathologic features, and clinical characteristics were investigated. The patients with aneuploid DNA content had a high frequency of local lymph node metastasis, invasion to surrounding tissues, poor histologic differentiation, and advanced tumor stages as compared with those patients with diploid DNA content. In contrast to this, there was no correlation in patients' sex, age, and the sites of the disease.
