RESUMO

In response to the environmental pollution caused by non-degradable and non-recyclable plastic packaging films (PPFs) and the resulting health concerns due to the migration of microplastics into food, the development of biodegradable food packaging films has gained great attention. Chitosan has been extensively utilized in the food industry owing to its abundant availability, exceptional biocompatibility, degradability, and antimicrobial properties. Chitosan-essential oil composite films (CEOs) represent a promising avenue to replace conventional PPFs. This review provides an overview of the advancements in CEOs over the past decade, focusing on the effects of essential oils (EOs) on CEOs in terms of antimicrobial activity, antioxidant effect, gas barrier, light barrier, and mechanical properties. It also offers insights into the controlled release of EOs in CEOs and summarizes the application of CEOs in fresh food preservation.

The ATP-binding cassette subfamily A member 3 (ABCA3) protein plays a fundamental role in surfactant homeostasis. Most children with ABCA3 gene mutations develop pulmonary interstitial fibrosis leading to the development of interstitial lung disease. Since traditional medicine does not offer effective therapy, the best option is lung transplantations, especially bilateral lung transplantations. We are reporting the case of a successful bilateral lung transplantation in a five-year-old child with pulmonary interstitial fibrosis caused by ABCA3 gene mutations. This successful transplantation enabled the patient to get rid of chronic cough and tachypnea.

A visible-light-induced aerobic oxidative [2+3] cycloaddition reaction between glycine derivatives and thiiranes has been disclosed, which provides an efficient and atom-economical strategy for the rapid synthesis of thiazolidine-2-carboxylic acid derivatives and the post-modification of glycine-derived dipeptides under mild conditions with good yield and high diastereoselectivities. A preliminary mechanistic study favors a pathway involving a cooperative photoredox catalysis and iron catalysis.

BACKGROUND: Toxicodendron vernicifluum, belonging to the family Anacardiaceae, is an important commercial arbor species, which can provide us with the raw lacquer, an excellent adhesive and painting material used to make lacquer ware. Compared with diploid, triploid lacquer tree has a higher yield of raw lacquer and stronger resistance to stress. Triploid T. vernicifluum was a newly discovered natural triploid lacquer tree. However, the taxonomy of triploid T. vernicifluum has remained uncertain. Here, we sequenced and analyzed the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of triploid T. vernicifluum and compared it with related species of Toxicodendron genus based on chloroplast genome and SSR markers. RESULTS: The plastome of triploid T. vernicifluum is 158,221 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 26,462 bp, separated by a large single-copy region of 86,951 bp and a small single-copy region of 18,346 bp. In total, 132 genes including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and 8 rRNA genes were identified in the triploid T. vernicifluum. Among these, 16 genes were duplicated in the IR regions, 14 genes contain one intron, while three genes contain two introns. After nucleotide substitutions, seven small inversions were analyzed in the chloroplast genomes, eight hotspot regions were found, which could be useful molecular genetic markers for future population genetics. Phylogenetic analyses showed that triploid T. vernicifluum was a sister to T. vernicifluum cv. Dahongpao and T. vernicifluum cv. Hongpigaobachi. Moreover, phylogenetic clustering based on the SSR markers showed that all the samples of triploid T. vernicifluum, T. vernicifluum cv. Dahongpao and T. vernicifluum cv. Hongpigaobachi in one group, while the samples of T. vernicifluum and T. succedaneum in another group, which is consistent with the cp genome and morphological analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The current genomic datasets provide pivotal genetic resources to determine the phylogenetic relationships, variety identification, breeding and resource exploitation, and future genetic diversity-related studies of T. vernicifluum.

The temperature distribution is always assumed to be homogeneous in a traditional single-input-single-output (SISO) air conditioning control strategy. However, the airflow inside is more complicated and unpredictable. This study proposes a zonal temperature control strategy with a thermal coupling effect integrated for air-conditioned large-scale open spaces. The target space was split into several subzones based on the minimum controllable air terminal units in the proposed method, and each zone can be controlled to its own set-point while considering the thermal coupling effect from its adjacent zones. A numerical method resorting to computational fluid dynamics was presented to obtain the heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) under different air supply scenarios. The relationship between heat transfer coefficient and zonal temperature difference was linearized. Thus, currently available zonal models in popular software can be used to simulate the dynamic response of temperatures in large-scale indoor open spaces. Case studies showed that the introduction of HTCs across the adjacent zones was capable of enhancing the precision of temperature control of large-scale open spaces. It could satisfy the temperature requirements of different zones, improve thermal comfort and at least 11% of energy saving can be achieved by comparing with the conventional control strategy. Toxicodendron succedaneum (L.) Kuntze (T. succedaneum) is an economic tree species that produces urushiol and urushi wax, and it is of great value in industry and medicine. However, the stability of reference genes (RGs) has not been systematically reported in T. succedaneum to date. In this study, the expression of 10 candidate RGs was analyzed by RT-qPCR in different tissues (roots, stems, leaves), stress treatments (high/low temperature, drought), and hormone stimulation (jasmonic acid, JA). Then, the stability ranking of 10 candidate genes was evaluated by ∆Ct analysis and three software programs: geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper. Finally, RefFinder was used to comprehensively analyze the expression stability of 10 candidate genes. The comprehensive analysis showed that TsRG05/06, TsRG01/06, and TsRG03/ACT were stable under high/low-temperature stress, drought stress, and JA treatment, respectively. TsRG03 and ACT had stable expression in different tissues. While the TsRG03 and ACT were recommended as the suitable RGs for T. succedaneum in all samples. Meanwhile, UBQ was the least suitable as a reference gene for T. succedaneum. In addition, the results of geNorm showed that the combination of two stable RGs could make the results of gene expression more accurate. These results provide alternative RGs for the study of gene function, correction, and normalization of target gene expression and directed molecular breeding in T. succedaneum.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the most frequent cancer globally with a high number of cancer-related deaths. The 4-and-a-half LIM domain protein 2 (FHL2) is an oncogenic gene, which promotes the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate that lung cancer patients with high FHL2 expression have worse overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS). METHODS: TCGA was used to study FHL2 mRNA expression. Nomograms were used to predict the relationship between FHL2 expression levels and survival. The qRT-PCR was used to detect the FHL2 expression in lung cancer cells. In vitro experiments including CCK-8 assay, wound healing, and Transwell assay were performed. RESULTS: This study comprised RNA-Seq gene expression data and clinical features for 1018 lung cancer patients. FHL2 was found to be overexpressed in lung cancer tissues. FHL2 demonstrated moderate diagnostic ability for lung cancer (AUC = 0.857). Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analysis revealed the higher FHL2 expression with the poorer OS and RFS (P < 0.001). The nomogram results indicated that FHL2 could be used to predict the survival of lung cancer patients. GSEA analysis results show that high expression of FHL2 is related to glycolysis and unfolded protein reflection. FHL2 was highly expressed in lung cancer cells and related to their proliferation, migration, and invasion ability. CONCLUSIONS: The high expression level of FHL2 in lung cancer can be used as an independent predictor of prognosis in clinical practice.

RESUMO

The negative influence on the cognitive ability of schizophrenia is one of the issues widely discussed in recent years. Working memory deficits are thought to be a core cognitive symptom of schizophrenia and lead to poorer social functions and worse academic performance. Previous studies have confirmed that working memory deficits tend to appear in the prodromal phase of schizophrenia. Therefore, considering that children with schizophrenia have better brain plasticity, it is critical to explore the development of their working memory. Although the research in this field developed gradually in recent years, few researchers have summarized these findings. The current study aims to review the recent studies from both behavior and neuroimaging aspects to summarize the working memory deficits of children with schizophrenia and to discuss the pathogenic factors such as genetic susceptibility. In addition, this study put forward some practicable interventions to improve cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia from psychological and neural perspectives.

Background: Bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) is one of the most common late non-infectious pulmonary complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Lung transplantation (LT) is the only cure for patients with end-stage BO, but the overall efficacy is rarely reported. Our study aims to conclude and elucidate the clinical experience of our single center and provide a reference for the current selection of treatment. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of six patients with post-HSCT BO who received LT in our center from 2015 to 2019. The collected information included demographic data, surgery-related conditions, and postoperative follow-up data, which covered blood tests, infection status assessment, lung function assessment, anesthesia assessment, function assessment of other organs and so on. All patients were regularly followed up after discharge, which in the first year, was performed every 3 months. Over the next 2 years, patients were assessed every 6 months, and after 3 years, the frequency was once annually. Results: The mean age of patients at LT time was 28±13 years, with an interval of 72±48 months from HSCT. All patients developed hypercapnia with an average carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2) of 71.1±20.8 mmHg. Preoperative pulmonary function tests showed the mean actual forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) was 16.7%±5.9% of the predicted value in four patients. After assessment, four patients adopted sequential bilateral LT and two adopted right-sided LT. Due to hemodynamic instability, five patients adopted intraoperative assistance of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). One patient died of septic shock 9 days after surgery, and the other five survived healthy for 53±23 months. The actual value of FEV1 at 3 months postoperatively accounted for 57.9%±15.3% of the predicted value. No patients had recurrence of BO. Conclusions: LT may be a treatment worthy of consideration in patients with post-HSCT end-stage BO because it can improve lung function, quality of life and prolong survival of these selected patients.

Pulmonary arteriovenous fistula (PAVF) is a rare pulmonary vascular lesion, more than 80% of which is caused by congenital abnormal development of pulmonary capillaries. The incidence of PAVF ranges from 2/100,000 to 3/100,000, with no difference in the male and female ratio. Congenital PAVF is often associated with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). In this article, we report a patient with only congenital PAVF that was successfully treated by bilateral lung transplantation (BLT) with intraoperative venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support because both lungs have been affected by PAVF and secondary pulmonary hypertension. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of BLT for PAVF in China and the second report that explains the clinical course of a patient to receive BLT for congenital PAVF without HHT. Some investigators have proposed lung transplantation as a definitive treatment, but the results are controversial. On the basis of the current condition of this patient, we believe lung transplantation is a viable option for certain patients, but the long-term effect remains to be studied.

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) impairment is an early prevalent feature of multiple sclerosis (MS), and remains vital for MS progression. Microglial activation precedes BBB disruption and cellular infiltrates in the brain of MS patients. However, little is known about the function of microglia in BBB impairment. Here, microglia acts as an important modulator of BBB integrity in inflammatory demyelination. Microglial depletion profoundly ameliorates BBB impairment in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Specifically, miR-126a-5p in microglia is positively correlated with BBB integrity in four types of MS plaques. Mechanistically, microglial deletion of miR-126a-5p exacerbates BBB leakage and EAE severity. The protective effect of miR-126a-5p is mimicked and restored by specific inhibition of MMP9 in microglia. Importantly, Auranofin, an FDA-approved drug, is identified to protect BBB integrity and mitigate EAE progression via a microglial miR-126a-5p dependent mechanism. Taken together, microglia can be manipulated to protect BBB integrity and ameliorate inflammatory demyelination. Targeting microglia to regulate BBB permeability merits consideration in therapeutic interventions in MS.

Mitochondrial fission regulator 2 (MTFR2) belongs to the MTFR1 family, which plays a crucial role in regulating oxidative phosphorylation. Recent studies indicate that it also participates in cancer carcinogenesis and development; however, the clinical significance of MTFR2 in lung adenocarcinoma has not been fully confirmed. Our current study investigated the relationships between clinical characteristics and MTFR2 expression based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GSE31210) dataset, and clinical histopathological sample cohort. In addition, Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were additionally performed to evaluate the association between MTFR2 expression and patient survival. Gene set enrichment analysis (GESA) was conducted to spot possible pathways associated with MTFR2. Moreover, a single-sample GESA (ssGESA) was performed to evaluate the association between MTFR2 expression and immune cell infiltration. Cell colony formation assay, CCK-8 assay, cell cycle assay, and transwell assay were performed to verify the cell proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities after interfering with MTFR2 in lung cancer cells. Western blot assay was applied to identify the underlying protein levels. The results indicated that the elevated MTFR2 expression in lung adenocarcinoma samples correlated with T stage (P < 0.001), N stage (P = 0.005), M stage (P = 0.015), pathological stage (P = 0.002), and TP53 status (P < 0.001). Patients with a higher MTFR2 expression correlated with poorer overall survival (P < 0.01) and progression-free survival (P = 0.002). Knockdown of MTFR2 inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and invasion via AKT-cyclin D1 signaling and EMT pathways. Moreover, MTFR2 expression significantly positively correlated with Th2 cells (P < 0.001). Taken together, MTFR2 could serve as a novel prognostic indicator and therapeutic target for lung adenocarcinoma.

High-performance thermal insulators are urgently desired for energy-saving and thermal protection applications. However, the creation of such materials with synchronously ultralow thermal conductivity, lightweight, and mechanically robust properties still faces enormous challenges. Herein, a proton donor-regulated assembly strategy is presented to construct asymmetric aramid nanofiber (ANF) aerogel membranes with a dense skin layer and a high-porous nanofibrous body part. The asymmetric structure originates from the otherness of the structural restoration of deprotonated ANFs and the resulting ANF assembly due to the diversity of available proton concentrations. Befitting from the synergistic effect of the distinct architectures, the resulting aerogel membranes exhibit excellent overall performance in terms of a low thermal conductivity of 0.031 W·m-1·K-1, a low density of 19.2 mg·cm-3, a high porosity of 99.53%, a high tensile strength of 11.8 MPa (16.5 times enhanced), high heat resistance (>500 °C), and high flame retardancy. Furthermore, a blade-scraping process is further proposed to fabricate the aerogel membrane in a continuous and scalable manner, as it is believed to have potential applications in civil and military fields.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese government has promoted the 'tiered medical services' policy in which diseases are classified by severity, mode of onset and difficulty of treatment since 2015 to optimize medical resources. We evaluated the diagnosis and treatment of acute exacerbation (AE) of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) under the tiered system. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study. COPD characteristics and treatments were compared among hospitals in different tiers. Associations were examined by univariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis. In addition, multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify the possible influencing factors of antibiotics, glucocorticoids and anticoagulant usages. RESULTS: Eligible COPD patients (n = 432) were consecutively recruited from eight hospitals in different tiers in China. Patients in the countryside preferred the community hospitals, whereas patients in cities preferred second-tier and teaching hospitals when they suffer from AECOPD. It indicates most COPD patients are likely to treat their disease locally. The severity of COPD AE increased with tiers of hospitals (p < 0.001). However, our results clearly show that most community hospitals can only deal with mild exacerbation of COPD. Approximately 90% of AE patients received antibiotics. We speculated that antibiotics abuse might exist in the three tiers of hospitals. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that long-term antibiotics usage (⩾14 days) was associated with moderate exacerbation [odds ratio (OR): 5.295, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 2.248-12.473, p < 0.001], radiographic progression (OR: 2.176, 95% CI: 1.047-4.522, p = 0.037), positive sputum etiology (OR: 3.073, 95% CI: 1.477-6.394, p = 0.003) and increased white blood cells (OR: 2.470, 95% CI: 1.190-5.126, p = 0.015). The proportion of glucocorticoids increased with the hospital hierarchy (18.6% versus 45.6% versus 69.2%, p < 0.001). The proportions of severe cases in the second-tier hospitals were 26.9%; however, non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) rate was only 14.7%. Anticoagulant is not commonly used in AECOPD, and the community hospitals had the lowest proportion of anticoagulation regimen (1.7% versus 14.3% versus 20.5%, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The 'tiered medical services' policy in AECOPD management has been unsatisfactory in the past years. Irrational treatment strategies in different hospitals were still found when comparing with international guideline. Further reform of the policy is still needed to optimize the management of AECOPD in China.

A regioselective Pd-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of terminal olefins with HCOOH is described. A wide variety of branched carboxylic acids can readily be obtained with high regioselectivities under mild reaction conditions. The reaction is operationally simple and requires no handling of toxic CO. The ligand and LiCl are important factors for reaction reactivity and selectivity.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and proper management of a large number of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients are great challenges for the Chinese health care system. Although tiered medical services have been promoted by the Chinese government since 2015, they have not been ideally implemented for COPD diagnosis and management. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We designed a cross-sectional study. Eligible COPD patients (n = 648) and physicians (n = 161) were consecutively recruited from 8 hospitals in different tiers in China. COPD characteristics and treatments were compared among hospitals in different tiers. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify risk factors associated with airflow limitation, symptoms and acute exacerbation. RESULTS: The PFT rate at first diagnosis was 99%, 69.4% and 29.9% in teaching, second-tier and community hospitals (P < 0.001). Only approximately 10.9%, 1.7% and 9.6% and 21.8%, 6.9% and 32% of COPD patients received influenza or pneumococcal vaccines (P < 0.001). The proportion of patients who did not use inhaled drugs or had irregular inhalation was 2%, 24.6% and 78.8% (P < 0.001). Education level (RR-1 = -41.26%, P = 0.007), FEV1%pred (RR-1 = -2.76%, P < 0.001), and influenza vaccination in the last year (RR-1 = -64.53%, P = 0.006) were all negatively correlated with COPD acute exacerbation (AE). COPD duration (RR-1 = 131.73%, P = 0.009), AE (RR-1 = 151.39%, P < 0.001), and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) scores (RR-1 = 3.82%, P = 0.019) were all positively correlated with COPD airflow limitation severity. CONCLUSION: Differences exist in the diagnosis, treatment and management of COPD among different tiers of hospitals in China. Teaching hospitals can manage COPD patients relatively well. There are still some gaps compared with developed countries.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to examine whether the static functional connectivity (FC) of the executive control network (ECN) and the temporal properties of dynamic FC states in the ECN can characterize the underlying nature of anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate (anti-NMDA) receptor encephalitis and their correlations with cognitive functions. METHODS: In total, 21 patients with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis past the acute stage and 23 healthy controls (HCs) underwent a set of neuropsychological tests and participated in a resting-state fMRI study to analyse the static FC of the ECN and the temporal properties of dynamic FC states in the ECN. In addition, correlation analyses were performed to determine the correlations between the FC metrics and cognitive performance. RESULTS: Patients with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis past the acute stage showed significant cognitive impairments compared to HCs. In accord with the results of neuropsychological tests, static intrinsic FC alterations and changed dynamic FC metrics of ECN were observed in the patients. Importantly, we observed significant correlations between altered ECN metrics and working memory, information processing speed, executive function performance in the patients. INTERPRETATION: Our findings suggest that cognitive impairments in patients with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis past the acute stage are likely related to altered static and dynamic ECN connectivity. These observations may enhance our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying cognitive function in this population.

Microglia have the ability to mediate innate immune memory and can be reprogrammed by primary stimuli to enhance or inhibit the immune response of microglia to secondary stimuli. Inflammatory stimulation is an important factor for microglia to mediate innate immune memory. Single or repeated stimulation can induce microglia to form different phenotypes. Microglia-mediated innate immune response is involved in the regulation of immune memory. Enhancer modification is a key pathway of microglia epigenetic regulation, and the H3K27ac enhancer marker is closely related to immune training. TGF-ß1 mediates the interaction between IL-10 and IL-1ß, thereby influencing the microglial phenotype. Microglia glycolysis activity is increased after immune training, and oxidative phosphorylation is associated with immune tolerance. Innate immune memory is closely associated with neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumors, brain damage and psychosis. Further study on the mechanism of microglia-mediated innate immune memory is helpful to understand the occurrence and development of central nervous system diseases and provide new options for the treatment of central nervous system diseases.

The vegetative state (VS) and minimally conscious state (MCS) are two major types of chronic disorders of consciousness (DoC). The assessment of these two consciousness states generally relies on the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) score, but a high misdiagnosis rate limits the generalized use of this score. To identify metabolites in human plasma that can accurately distinguish VS from MCS patients, comprehensive plasma metabolic profiles were obtained with targeted metabolomics analysis and untargeted and targeted lipidomics analysis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess the significance of differences. Compared with healthy controls (HCs), the DoC groups, Emerged from Minimally Conscious State (EMCS) group and Alzheimer's disease (AD) group had significantly different metabolic profiles. Purine metabolism pathway differed the most between the DoC (MCS and VS) and HC groups. In this pathway, adenosine, ADP, and AMP, which are the derived products of ATP degradation, were decreased in the MCS and VS groups compared to healthy controls. More importantly, we identified certain lipids for which the levels were enriched in the VS or MCS groups. Specifically, phosphatidylcholine, (38:5)-H (PC(38:5)-H), and arachidonic acid (AA) differed substantially between the VS and MCS groups and may be used to distinguish these two groups of patients. Together, our findings suggest that metabolic profiling is significantly altered in patients with chronic DoC.

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant therapy is one of the important aspects of atrial fibrillation (AF) management, which can effectively reduce the formation of left atrial thrombosis (LAT) and the occurrence of embolic events. The CHA2DS2-VASc score is a commonly used risk assessment tool for embolic events, and it has guiding significance for anticoagulant therapy. However, a large number of recent studies have clearly shown that some of the markers that are not included in the score affect the formation of LAT. OBJECTIVE: This single-center study probed for risk markers for LAT by analyzing the clinical features of patients who experienced AF. METHODS: We reviewed patients with AF who had undergone a transesophageal echocardiography exam over the past 6 years and used binary logistic regression analysis to identify risk markers other than CHA2DS2-VASc score. For the risk markers found, the propensity score matching (PSM) was used to further evaluate whether it was an independent risk marker for LAT. The newly discovered markers were added to the score, and receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate whether the ability of the model to predict LAT was improved. RESULTS: A total of 2246 patients were included in the study. In total, 838 of them were anticoagulated (314 with rivaroxaban, 57 with dabigatran, and 467 with warfarin) and 30 patients (1.33%) had LAT. Regression analysis revealed abnormal uric acid metabolism (abUA) and obesity were risk markers for LAT. Further PSM analysis found that abUA was an independent risk marker for LAT. After including abUA, the CHA2DS2-VASc score was more accurate for LAT prediction (area under the curve difference is 0.0651, 95% confidence interval: 0.0247, 0.1050, Z = 3.158, P = 0.0016). CONCLUSIONS: AbUA is an independent risk marker for LAT. After considering abUA, the CHA2DS2-VASc score for LAT is more accurate.
