RESUMO

As the "core" of fertilizer machinery, the fertilizer apparatus has a significant impact on the effect of fertilization operation. At present, the straight-grooves type external groove wheel fertilizer apparatus is widely used, which has the problem that the fertilizer flow fluctuates periodically and is not conducive to precision fertilization. Therefore a kind of the spiral groove wheel fertilizer apparatus is proposed in the paper, and the designed fertilizer apparatus is experimented and optimized by using Design-Expert Software 10 and a self-made fertilizer experiment bench. Taking the fertilization amount and the variation coefficient of fertilization amount as the experiment index, the interaction effects of the groove radius, spiral rising angle, groove wheel rotation speed, and fertilizer tongue inclination of the spiral groove wheel type fertilizer wheel on the fertilization performance are analyzed. The quadratic regression models of multiple factors of the fertilization amount and the variation coefficient of fertilization amount are established. Through optimization and experiment validation, the optimal combination of parameters is determined as follows: the groove radius is 13.5 mm, the spiral rising angle is 62°, the groove wheel rotation speed is 29.4 r/min, the fertilizer tongue inclination is 5°, the fertilization amount is 17.810 g and the variation coefficient of fertilization amount is 5.60%.

Biochar-supported nano zero-valent iron (BC@nZVI) is a novel and efficient non-homogeneous activator for persulfate (PS). This study aimed to identify the primary pathways, the degradation mechanism and the performance of phenanthrene (PHE) with PS activated by BC@nZVI (BC@nZVI/PS). BC@nZVI as an activator for PS was prepared by liquid phase reduction method. BC@nZVI was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of the iron-carbon mass ratio and BC@nZVI dosage were investigated, and a pseudo-first-order kinetic model was used to evaluate the PHE degradation. The results showed that BC supported nZVI and inhibited the agglomeration of nZVI, improving PS's activation efficiency. The optimal iron-carbon mass ratio was determined to be 1:4, accompanied by a dosage of 0.6 g/L of BC@nZVI. During PS activation, nZVI was transformed to Fe2+ and Fe3+, with the majority being Fe3+. The reducibility of nZVI in BC@nZVI enabled the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ to activate PS. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed that the oxidative radicals in the BC@nZVI/PS system were mainly SO4-· and ·OH, where SO4-· was the primary free radical under acidic and neutral conditions and ·OH in alkaline conditions. Additionally, BC@nZVI adsorption had a limited role in PHE removal. This study can provide mechanism insights of PHE degradation in water with BC@nZVI activation of the Na2S2O8 system.

Sustained-release materials are increasingly being used in the delivery of oxidants for in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) for groundwater remediation. Successful implementation of sustained-release materials depends on a clear understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of sustained release. In this research, a columnar sustained-release material (PS@PW) was prepared with paraffin wax and sodium persulfate (PS), and column experiments were performed to investigate the impacts of the PS@PW diameter and PS/PW mass ratio on PS release. The results demonstrated that a reduction in diameter led to an increase in both the rate and proportion of PS release, as well as a diminished lifespan of release. The release process followed the second-order kinetics, and the release rate constant was positively correlated with the PS@PW diameter. A matrix boundary diffusion model was utilized to determine the PS@PW diffusion coefficient of the PS release process, and the release lifespan of a material with a length of 500 mm and a diameter of 80 mm was predicted to be more than 280 days. In general, this research provided a better understanding of the release characteristics and kinetics of persulfate from a sustained-release system and could lead to the development of columnar PS@PW as a practical oxidant for in situ chemical oxidation of contaminated aquifers.

After mine closure and flooding, abandoned iron-prone devices and equipment (e.g., steel bolts and ground support meshes) and iron-bearing minerals (e.g., pyrite) form a dual-source iron pollution system in mine groundwater. Dual-source iron contributes to the water-solid-gas interaction in abandoned coal mines and the release of iron at different periods after mine closure, posing environmental risks in groundwater and discharging acid mine drainage, which contains large amounts of iron. In this study, a series of hydrochemical experiments were conducted to simulate the iron release process of the dual-source system, and electrochemical experiments were carried out to reveal the reaction mechanism, characterize the dual-source iron pollution release mode and quantify the release rate ratio. PHREEQC package was used to simulate the long-term hydrogeochemistry reactions of the water-solid-gas interaction to determine the key factors and suitable conditions that inhibit dual-source iron release. The results show that the dual-source system of iron-bearing minerals (pyrite) and steel bolts promote iron release from each other. The resulting calculated annual iron release indicated that the overall iron release rate ratio is: dual-source > bolt > pyrite, indicating that mine water would remain acidic for a long time due to the continuous release of iron from the system. Numerical modeling results show that maintaining the environment temperature below 25 °C and the pH above 3.5 is an effective way to reduce the iron release rate.

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), the sole output neurons in the eyes, are vulnerable to diverse insults in many pathological conditions, which can lead to permanent vision dysfunction. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to protecting RGCs and their axons from injuries are not completely known. Here, we identify that Porf-2, a member of the Rho GTPase activating protein gene group, is upregulated in RGCs after optic nerve crush. Knockdown of Porf-2 protects RGCs from apoptosis and promotes long-distance optic nerve regeneration after crush injury in both young and aged mice in vivo. In vitro, we find that inhibition of Porf-2 induces axon growth and growth cone formation in retinal explants. Inhibition of Porf-2 provides long-term and post-injury protection to RGCs and eventually promotes the recovery of visual function after crush injury in mice. These findings reveal a neuroprotective impact of the inhibition of Porf-2 on RGC survival and axon regeneration after optic nerve injury, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for vision restoration in patients with traumatic optic neuropathy.

RESUMO

Secure key rate (SKR) of point-point quantum key distribution (QKD) is fundamentally bounded by the rate-loss limit. Recent breakthrough of twin-field (TF) QKD can overcome this limit and enables long distance quantum communication, but its implementation necessitates complex global phase tracking and requires strong phase references that not only add to noise but also reduce the duty cycle for quantum transmission. Here, we resolve these shortcomings, and importantly achieve even higher SKRs than TF-QKD, via implementing an innovative but simpler measurement-device-independent QKD that realizes repeaterlike communication through asynchronous coincidence pairing. Over 413 and 508 km optical fibers, we achieve finite-size SKRs of 590.61 and 42.64 bit/s, which are respectively 1.80 and 4.08 times of their corresponding absolute rate limits. Significantly, the SKR at 306 km exceeds 5 kbit/s and meets the bitrate requirement for live one-time-pad encryption of voice communication. Our work will bring forward economical and efficient intercity quantum-secure networks.

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) is a condition that causes massive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axonal fibers, leading to visual insufficiency. Several intrinsic and external factors can limit the regenerative ability of RGC after TON, subsequently resulting in RGC death. Hence, it is important to investigate a potential drug that can protect RGC after TON and enhance its regenerative capacity. Herein, we investigated whether Huperzine A (HupA), extracted from a Chinese herb, has neuroprotective effects and may enhance neuronal regeneration following the optic nerve crush (ONC) model. We compared the three modes of drug delivery and found that intravitreal injection of HupA could promote RGC survival and axonal regeneration after ONC. Mechanistically, HupA exerted its neuroprotective and axonal regenerative effects through the mTOR pathway; these effects could be blocked by rapamycin. To sum up, our findings suggest a promising application of HupA in the clinical treatment of traumatic optic nerve.

Afterpulsing noise in InGaAs/InP single photon avalanche photodiodes (APDs) is caused by carrier trapping and can be suppressed successfully through limiting the avalanche charge via sub-nanosecond gating. Detection of faint avalanches requires an electronic circuit that is able to effectively remove the gate-induced capacitive response while keeping photon signals intact. Here we demonstrate a novel ultra-narrowband interference circuit (UNIC) that can reject the capacitive response by up to 80 dB per stage with little distortion to avalanche signals. Cascading two UNIC's in a readout circuit, we were able to enable a high count rate of up to 700 MC/s and a low afterpulsing of 0.5 % at a detection efficiency of 25.3 % for 1.25 GHz sinusoidally gated InGaAs/InP APDs. At a temperature of -30 ∘C, we measured an afterpulsing probability of 1 % at a detection efficiency of 21.2 %.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the pathogenesis of traumatic coma related to functional connectivity (FC) within the default mode network (DMN), within the executive control network (ECN) and between the DMN and ECN and to investigate its capacity for predicting awakening. METHODS: We carried out resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) examinations on 28 traumatic coma patients and 28 age-matched healthy controls. DMN and ECN nodes were split into regions of interest (ROIs), and node-to-node FC analysis was conducted on individual participants. To identify coma pathogenesis, we compared the pairwise FC differences between coma patients and healthy controls. Meanwhile, we divided the traumatic coma patients into different subgroups based on their clinical outcome scores at 6 months postinjury. Considering the awakening prediction, we calculated the area under the curve (AUC) to evaluate the predictive ability of changed FC pairs. RESULTS: We found a massive pairwise FC alteration in the patients with traumatic coma compared to the healthy controls [45% (33/74) pairwise FC located in the DMN, 27% (20/74) pairwise FC located in the ECN, and 28% (21/74) pairwise FC located between the DMN and ECN]. Moreover, in the awake and coma groups, there were 67% (12/18) pairwise FC alterations located in the DMN and 33% (6/18) pairwise FC alterations located between the DMN and ECN. We also indicated that pairwise FC that showed a predictive value of 6-month awakening was mainly located in the DMN rather than in the ECN. Specifically, decreased FC between the right superior frontal gyrus and right parahippocampal gyrus (in the DMN) showed the highest predictive ability (AUC = 0.827). CONCLUSION: In the acute phase of severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), the DMN plays a more prominent role than the ECN and the DMN-ECN interaction in the emergence of traumatic coma and the prediction of 6-month awakening.

Twin-field (TF) quantum key distribution (QKD) has rapidly risen as the most viable solution to long-distance secure fibre communication thanks to its fundamentally repeater-like rate-loss scaling. However, its implementation complexity, if not successfully addressed, could impede or even prevent its advance into real-world. To satisfy its requirement for twin-field coherence, all present setups adopted essentially a gigantic, resource-inefficient interferometer structure that lacks scalability that mature QKD systems provide with simplex quantum links. Here we introduce a technique that can stabilise an open channel without using a closed interferometer and has general applicability to phase-sensitive quantum communications. Using locally generated frequency combs to establish mutual coherence, we develop a simple and versatile TF-QKD setup that does not need service fibre and can operate over links of 100 km asymmetry. We confirm the setup's repeater-like behaviour and obtain a finite-size rate of 0.32 bit/s at a distance of 615.6 km.

Previous researches have reported the association between air pollution and various diseases. However, few researches have investigated whether air pollutants are associated with the economic loss resulting from patients' hospitalization, especially the economic loss of hospitalization due to acute cardiovascular events. The purpose of our research was to explore the association between the levels of carbon monoxide (CO), taken as an index of pollution, and the hospitalization costs of myocardial infarction (MI), and the potential effect modification by the ABO blood group. A total of 3237 MI inpatients were included in this study. A multiple linear regression model was used to evaluate the association between ambient CO levels and hospitalization costs of MI patients. Moreover, we performed stratified analyses by age, gender, body mass index (BMI), season, hypertension, and ABO blood types. There was a positive association between the levels of CO in the air and the costs of hospitalization caused by MI. Furthermore, such association was stronger in males, BMI ≥25, <65 years, with hypertension, and non-O blood group. Interestingly, we found the association was particularly significant in patients with blood group B. Overall, our study first found that ambient CO levels could have an impact on the hospitalization costs for MI patients, and those with blood group B can be more sensitive.

Evidence of the short-term effects of ambient sulfur dioxide (SO2) exposure on the economic burden of ischemic stroke is limited. This study aimed to explore the association between short-term ambient SO2 exposure and hospitalization costs for ischemic stroke in Chongqing, the most populous city in China. The hospital-based study included 7271 ischemic stroke inpatients. Multiple linear regression models were used to estimate the association between SO2 concentration and hospitalization costs. Propensity score matching was used to compare the patients' characteristics when exposed to SO2 concentrations above and below 20 µg/m3. It is found that short-term SO2 exposure was positively correlated with the hospitalization costs of ischemic stroke. The association was more evident in males, people younger than 65, and people hospitalized in the cool seasons. Besides, among the components of hospitalization costs, medicine costs were most significantly associated with SO2. More interesting, the lower concentration of SO2, the higher costs associated with 1 µg/m3 SO2 change. Above all, SO2 was positively associated with hospitalization costs of ischemic stroke, even at its low levels. The measures to reduce the level of SO2 can help reduce the burden of ischemic stroke.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) as a non-communicable disease imposes heavy disease burdens on society. Limited studies have been conducted to assess the effects of short-term air pollution exposure on T2DM, especially in Asian regions. Our research aimed to determine the association between short-term exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and outpatient visits for T2DM in Chongqing, the largest city in western China, based on the data collected from November 28, 2013 to December 31, 2019. A generalized additive model (GAM) was applied, and stratified analyses were performed to investigate the potential modifying effects by age, gender, and season. Meanwhile, the disease burden was revealed from attributable risk. Positive associations between short-term NO2 and daily T2DM outpatient visits were observed. The strongest association was observed at lag 04, with per 10 µg/m3 increase of NO2 corresponded to increased T2DM outpatient visits at 1.57% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.48%, 2.65%]. Stronger associations were presented in middle-aged group (35-64 years old), male group, and cool seasons (October to March). Moreover, there were 1.553% (8664.535 cases) of T2DM outpatient visits attributable to NO2. Middle-aged adults, males, and patients who visited in cool seasons suffered heavier burdens. Conclusively, short-term exposure to NO2 was associated with increased outpatient visits for T2DM. Attention should be paid to the impact of NO2 on the burden of T2DM, especially for those vulnerable groups.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigate the preoperative and postoperative computed tomography (CT) scores in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients undergoing decompressive craniectomy (DC) and compare their predictive accuracy. METHODS: Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the relationship between CT score (preoperative and postoperative) and mortality at 30 days after injury. The discriminatory power of preoperative and postoperative CT score was assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for the established predictors of TBI outcomes showed that preoperative Rotterdam CT score (odds ratio [OR], 3.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13-11.50; P = 0.030), postoperative Rotterdam CT score (OR, 4.17; 95% CI, 1.63-10.66; P = 0.003), preoperative Stockholm CT score (OR, 3.41; 95% CI, 1.42-8.18; P = 0.006), postoperative Stockholm CT score (OR, 4.50; 95% CI, 1.60-12.64; P = 0.004), preoperative Helsinki CT score (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.03-2.02; P = 0.031), and postoperative Helsinki CT score (OR, 2.55; 95% CI, 1.32-4.95; P = 0.005) were significantly associated with mortality. The performance of the postoperative Rotterdam CT score was superior to the preoperative Rotterdam CT score (AUC, 0.82-0.97 vs 0.71-0.91). The postoperative Stockholm CT score was superior to the preoperative Stockholm CT score (AUC, 0.76-0.94 vs 0.72-0.92). The postoperative Helsinki CT score was superior to the preoperative Helsinki CT score (AUC, 0.88-0.99 vs 0.65-0.87). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, assessing the CT score before and after DC may be more precise and efficient for predicting early mortality in severe TBI patients who undergo DC.

Many researches have reported the air pollution impacts, either long term or short term, on inflammatory skin diseases, but there are few studies on the relation between PM2.5 and acne vulgaris. To determine the correlation between short-term PM2.5 exposure and acne outpatient visits, data for 120,842 acne vulgaris outpatient visits between December 2013 and December 2019 were obtained from three large hospitals in Chongqing, China. Both single-pollutant models and two-pollutant models were established to explore the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and acne outpatient visits. The stratified analyses were conducted through two-sample z-tests to investigate the possible gender (male or female) and age (< 25 years or ≥ 25 years) differences in PM2.5 effects. The results demonstrated positive correlations between PM2.5 concentrations and acne outpatient visits. A 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration was associated with a 1.71% (95% CI: 1.06-2.36%) increase in acne outpatient visits at lag 0-7 day. Stratified analyses showed that PM2.5 effects were greater in individuals aged ≥ 25 years than those aged < 25 years, but no gender difference was found. In conclusion, short-term PM2.5 exposure was positively associated with the risk of acne outpatient visits, especially for people ≥ 25 years old.

The success of current deep saliency models heavily depends on large amounts of annotated human fixation data to fit the highly non-linear mapping between the stimuli and visual saliency. Such fully supervised data-driven approaches are annotation-intensive and often fail to consider the underlying mechanisms of visual attention. In contrast, in this paper, we introduce a model based on various cognitive theories of visual saliency, which learns visual attention patterns in a weakly supervised manner. Our approach incorporates insights from cognitive science as differentiable submodules, resulting in a unified, end-to-end trainable framework. Specifically, our model encapsulates the following important components motivated from biological vision. (a) As scene semantics are closely related to visually attentive regions, our model encodes discriminative spatial information for scene understanding through spatial visual semantics embedding. (b) To model the objectness factors in visual attention deployment, we incorporate object-level semantics embedding and object relation information. (c) Considering the "winner-take-all" mechanism in visual stimuli processing, we model the competition mechanism among objects with softmax based neural attention. (d) Lastly, a conditional center prior is learned to mimic the spatial distribution bias of visual attention. Furthermore, we propose novel loss functions to utilize supervision cues from image-level semantics, saliency prior knowledge, and self-information compression. Experiments show that our method achieves promising results, and even outperforms many of its fully supervised counterparts. Overall, our weakly supervised saliency method makes an essential step towards reducing the annotation budget of current approaches, as well as providing a more comprehensive understanding of the visual attention mechanism. BACKGROUND: Large skin defects severely disrupt the overall skin structure and can irreversibly damage sweat glands (SG), thus impairing the skin's physiological function. This study aims to develop a stepwise reprogramming strategy to convert fibroblasts into SG lineages, which may provide a promising method to obtain desirable cell types for the functional repair and regeneration of damaged skin. METHODS: The expression of the SG markers cytokeratin 5 (CK5), cytokeratin 10 (CK10), cytokeratin 18 (CK18), carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA), aquaporin 5 (AQP5) and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was assessed with quantitative PCR (qPCR), immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Calcium activity analysis was conducted to test the function of induced SG-like cells (iSGCs). Mouse xenograft models were also used to evaluate the in vivo regeneration of iSGCs. BALB/c nude mice were randomly divided into a normal group, SGM treatment group and iSGC transplantation group. Immunocytochemical analyses and starch-iodine sweat tests were used to confirm the in vivo regeneration of iSGCs. RESULTS: EDA overexpression drove HDF conversion into iSGCs in SG culture medium (SGM). qPCR indicated significantly increased mRNA levels of the SG markers CK5, CK18 and CEA in iSGCs, and flow cytometry data demonstrated (4.18 ± 0.04)% of iSGCs were CK5 positive and (4.36 ± 0.25)% of iSGCs were CK18 positive. The addition of chemical cocktails greatly accelerated the SG fate program. qPCR results revealed significantly increased mRNA expression of CK5, CK18 and CEA in iSGCs, as well as activation of the duct marker CK10 and luminal functional marker AQP5. Flow cytometry indicated, after the treatment of chemical cocktails, (23.05 ± 2.49)% of iSGCs expressed CK5+ and (55.79 ± 3.18)% of iSGCs expressed CK18+, respectively. Calcium activity analysis indicated that the reactivity of iSGCs to acetylcholine was close to that of primary SG cells [(60.79 ± 7.71)% vs. (70.59 ± 0.34)%, ns]. In vivo transplantation experiments showed approximately (5.2 ± 1.1)% of the mice were sweat test positive, and the histological analysis results indicated that regenerated SG structures were present in iSGCs-treated mice. CONCLUSION: We developed a SG reprogramming strategy to generate functional iSGCs from HDFs by using the single factor EDA in combination with SGM and small molecules. The generation of iSGCs has important implications for future in situ skin regeneration with SG restoration.

Ambient carbon monoxide (CO) is associated with bronchitis morbidity, but there is no evidence concerning its correlation with hospitalization costs for bronchitis patients. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between short-term ambient CO exposure and hospitalization costs for bronchitis patients in Chongqing, China. Baseline data for 3162 hospitalized bronchitis patients from November 2013 to December 2019 were collected. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the association, delayed and cumulative, between short-term CO exposure and hospitalization costs. Additionally, subgroup analyses were performed by gender, age, season, and comorbidity. Positive association between CO and hospitalization costs for bronchitis patients was observed. The strongest association was observed at lag 015 days, with per 1 mg/m3 increase of CO concentrations corresponded to 5834.40 Chinese Yuan (CNY) (95% CI: 2318.71, 9350.08; P < 0.001) (845.97 US dollars) increment in hospitalization costs. Stratified analysis results showed that the association was more obvious among those males, elderly, with comorbidities, and in warm seasons. More importantly, there was strongest correlation between CO and bronchitis patients with coronary heart disease. In summary, short-term exposure to ambient CO, even lower than Chinese and WHO standards, can be associated with increased hospitalization costs for bronchitis. Controlling CO exposure can be helpful to reduce medical burden associated with bronchitis patients. The results also suggest that when setting air quality standards and formulating preventive measures, susceptible subpopulations ought to be considered.
