RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the regulation efficacy of oral tangeretin on testosterone and cortisol in sprinters at winter training season. Methods: Twenty-four sprinters were paired and randomly divided into experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). During winter training season, EG were treated with 200 mg tangeretin by oral, and CG were treated with placebo for 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected on the first day of each week (T1, T2, T3, T4) and after the intervention (T5) to detect serum levels of testosterone, cortisol, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The body composition was tested at T1 and T5. Results: After 4 weeks, ①the serum cortisol level of CG was increased, and the serum levels of testosterone and SOD were decreased significantly (P<0.05). ②In EG, the serum levels of cortisoland ACTH were decreased significantly (P<0.05, P< 0.01), while the serum testosterone level was remained stable, and the level of SOD was increased slightly. ③The muscle mass of EG and CG were increases, but that of EG was increased higher than that of CG. Conclusion: Tangeretin reduces the oxidative stress response that caused by high-intensity exercise during winter training, which maintain the serum testosterone level and inhibit cortisol excessive secretion and promote muscle synthesis.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the effects of 4-week tangeretin supplementation on cortisol stress response induced by high-intensity resistance exercise. Methods: Twenty-four sprinters were paired and randomly divided into experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). EG orally took supplement with tangeretin (200 mg/day) and CG took placebo for 4 weeks. Before and after the 4-week intervention, all sprinters performed a set of high-intensity resistance exercise (shoulder press, squat, bench press and deadlift, 10 RM, 4 sets per movement) to stimulate their cortisol stress responses. Serum levels of cortisol, adreno-corticotropic hormone (ACTH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), white blood cell count (WBC) and blood glucose were obtained by collecting blood sample before the exercise (PRE), immediately after the exercise (P0), and at 10 (P10), 20 (P20), and 30 minutes (P30) after the exercise. Results: Compared with the same period before the intervention, after the 4-week tangeretin intervention, EXP showed significantly reduced serum cortisol level at PRE (P=0.017), P10 (P=0.010), P20 and P30 (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and significantly reduced WBC at PRE, ACTH at P10 (P=0.037) and WBC and ACTH at P30 (P<0.05). Compared with CTROL, EXP showed significantly lower levels of the serum cortisol at PRE and P10 (P<0.05), and significantly lower levels of the ACTH (P<0.05) and WBC (P<0.01) at P30, and significantly increased level of the SOD activity at P30 (P<0.05). Conclusion: Tangeretin supplementation can significantly alleviate the cortisol stress response induced by high-intensity resistance exercise, inhibit the excessive secretion of cortisol, enhance antioxidant capacity, accelerate the elimination of inflammation in the body, and promote the recovery of body functions.

RESUMO

Nitrogen and phosphorus are the leading causes of water eutrophication, and it is challenging to remove nitrogen and phosphorus effectively through a single water remediation method. In this study, an aerobic denitrifying bacterium (AD-19) isolated from eutrophic water was used to construct an immobilized biofilm and combined with Phoslock® to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from the water. The phosphorus control efficiency of Phoslock®, nitrogen removal performance of the denitrifying bacteria, and combined remediation performance for the eutrophic water were studied. The results demonstrated that the removal rate of PO43--P in the simulated eutrophic water reached 95% with a dosing ratio of 80 (mass ratio of Phoslock® to PO43--P), and phosphorus release from sediment was effectively inhibited at the same time. Strain AD-19, which was identified as Pseudomonas sp. Using the 16S rDNA method, had a good heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification ability, and more than 97% of the nitrogen was removed when NH4+-N or NO3--N was used as the nitrogen source. The feasibility of the combined remediation of the eutrophic water was demonstrated using a lake simulation device. Furthermore, this technique was used to restore a eutrophic pond in a park in Wuhan city. After 16 days of treatment, the water quality indices for nitrogen and phosphorus were improved from worse than Grade Ⅴ to Grade Ⅲ (GB 3838-2002, Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, 2002) and remained stable for more than 270 days, indicating that Phoslock® combined with the immobilized biofilm could quickly and effectively restore eutrophic water as well as maintain the water quality for long periods.

RESUMO

The citrus process industry produces annually a huge amount of pomace, which is a rich source of citrus pectin. Here, we report the hydrogel of citrus pectin mediated by sodium hydroxide can be used to prepare fluorescent carbon dots (CDs). The introduction of hydrogel can not only make the temperature of the hydrothermal reaction down to 100 °C, but also avoid visually carbonized precipitates in the synthesis process even up to 180 °C. The as-synthesized CDs are well dispersed in water with an average size of 2.7 nm and show cyan fluorescence with high photostability, good biocompatibility. Furthermore, the CDs can act as a potential fluorescent probe for cell imaging. Citrus pectin as a non-toxic carbonaceous precursor for preparation of fluorescent CDs provides a new approach for the efficient utilization of citrus germplasm in future.

RESUMO

The origin of cultivated tree peonies, known as the 'king of flowers' in China for more than 1000 years, has attracted considerable interest, but remained unsolved. Here, we conducted phylogenetic analyses of explicitly sampled traditional cultivars of tree peonies and all wild species from the shrubby section Moutan of the genus Paeonia based on sequences of 14 fast-evolved chloroplast regions and 25 presumably single-copy nuclear markers identified from RNA-seq data. The phylogeny of the wild species inferred from the nuclear markers was fully resolved and largely congruent with morphology and classification. The incongruence between the nuclear and chloroplast trees suggested that there had been gene flow between the wild species. The comparison of nuclear and chloroplast phylogenies including cultivars showed that the cultivated tree peonies originated from homoploid hybridization among five wild species. Since the origin, thousands of cultivated varieties have spread worldwide, whereas four parental species are currently endangered or on the verge of extinction. The documentation of extensive homoploid hybridization involved in tree peony domestication provides new insights into the mechanisms underlying the origins of garden ornamentals and the way of preserving natural genetic resources through domestication.
