RESUMO

Bamboo has a functionally-graded microstructure that endows it with a combination of desirable properties, such as high failure strain, high toughness, and a low density. As a result, bamboo has been widely used in load-bearing structures. In this work, we study the use of bamboo-inspired void patterns to geometrically improve the failure properties of structures made from brittle polymers. We perform finite element analysis and experiments on 3D-printed structures to quantify the effect of the shape and spatial distribution of voids on the fracture behavior. The introduction of periodic, uniformly distributed voids in notched bend specimens leads to a 15-fold increase in the fracture energy relative to solid specimens. Adding a gradient to the pattern of voids leads to a cumulative 55-fold improvement in the fracture energy. Mechanistically, the individual voids result in crack blunting, which suppresses crack initiation, while neighboring voids redistribute stresses throughout the sample to enable large deformation before failure.

RESUMO

Layered double-hydroxide (LDH) has been considered an important class of electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the adsorption-desorption behaviors of oxygen intermediates on its surface still remain unsatisfactory. Apart from transition-metal doping to solve this electrocatalytic problem of LDH, rare-earth (RE) species have sprung up as emerging dopants owing to their unique 4f valence-electronic configurations. Herein, the Er is chosen as a RE model to improve OER activity of LDH via constructing nickel foam supported Er-doped NiFe-LDH catalyst (Er-NiFe-LDH@NF). The optimal Er-NiFe-LDH@NF exhibits a low overpotential (191 mV at 10 mA cm-2 ), high turnover frequency (0.588 s-1 ), and low activation energy (36.03 kJ mol-1 ), which are superior to Er-free sample. Electrochemical in situ Raman spectra reveal the facilitated transition of Ni-OH into Ni-OOH for promoted OER kinetics through the Er doping effect. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the introduction of Er facilitates the spin crossover of valence electrons by optimizing the d band center of NiFe-LDH, which leads to the GO -GHO closer to the optimal activity of the kinetic OER volcano by balancing the bonding strength of *O and *OH. Moreover, the Er-NiFe-LDH@NF presents high practicability in electrochemical water-splitting devices with a low driving potential of and a well-extended driving period.

RESUMO

Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is one of the most widely used Bayesian estimation methods in the optimal control area. Recent works on mobile robot control and transportation systems have applied various EKF methods, especially for localization. However, it is difficult to obtain adequate and reliable process-noise and measurement-noise models due to the complex and dynamic surrounding environments and sensor uncertainty. Generally, the default noise values of the sensors are provided by the manufacturer, but the values may frequently change depending on the environment. Thus, this paper mainly focuses on designing a highly accurate trainable EKF-based localization framework using inertial measurement units (IMUs) for the autonomous ground vehicle (AGV) with dead reckoning, with the goal of fusing it with a laser imaging, detection, and ranging (LiDAR) sensor-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) estimation for enhancing the performance. Convolution neural networks (CNNs), backward propagation algorithms, and gradient descent methods are implemented in the system to optimize the parameters in our framework. Furthermore, we develop a unique cost function for training the models to improve EKF accuracy. The proposed work is general and applicable to diverse IMU-aided robot localization models.

RESUMO

Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol compound produced in response to biotic and abiotic stresses in grape berries. However, changes in resveratrol caused by bud sport in grapes are scarcely reported. In this study, trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol were identified and quantified in the grape berries of 'Summer Black' and its bud sport 'Nantaihutezao' from the veraison to ripening stages using ultra performance liquid chromatography-high resolution tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS). We found that bud sport accumulates the trans-resveratrol earlier and increases the contents of cis-resveratrol in the earlier stages but decreases its contents in the later stages. Simultaneously, we used RNA-Seq to identify 51 transcripts involved in the stilbene pathways. In particular, we further identified 124 and 19 transcripts that negatively correlated with the contents of trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol, respectively, and four transcripts encoding F3'5'H that positively correlated with the contents of trans-resveratrol by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). These transcripts may play important roles in relation to the synergistic regulation of metabolisms of resveratrol. The results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for the genetic improvement of grapes.

RESUMO

MAIN CONCLUSION: 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (VIT_02s0109g00250) and copper amine oxidase (VIT_17s0000g09100) played essential roles in contributing to the total soluble solid and total anthocyanin variations induced by bud sport in grape berries. Taste and color, which are important organoleptic qualities of grape berry, undergo rapid and substantial changes during development and ripening. In this study, we used two cultivars 'Summer Black' and its bud sport 'Nantaihutezao' to explore and identify differentially expressed genes associated with total soluble solid and anthocyanin during developmental stages using RNA-Seq. Overall, substantial differences in expression were observed across berry development between the two cultivars. 5388 genes were detected by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) associated with the total soluble solid (TSS) and anthocyanin contents variations. Several of these genes were significantly enriched in the phenylalanine metabolism pathway; two hub genes 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (VIT_02s0109g00250) and copper amine oxidase (VIT_17s0000g09100) played the most essential roles in relating to the total soluble solid and total anthocyanin variations induced by bud sport through Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment and co-expression network analysis. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanism responsible for the bud sport phenotype.
