BACKGROUND: The development of laparoscopic technology has provided a new choice for surgery of gastric cancer (GC), but the advantages and disadvantages of laparoscopic total gastrectomy (LTG) and laparoscopic-assisted total gastrectomy (LATG) in treatment effect and safety are still controversial. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of the two methods in the treatment of GC, and to provide a basis for clinical decision-making. AIM: To compare the efficacy of totally LTG (TLTG) and LATG in the context of radical gastrectomy for GC. Additionally, we investigated the safety and feasibility of the total laparoscopic esophagojejunostomy technique. METHODS: Literature on comparative studies of the above two surgical methods for GC (TLTG group and LATG group) published before September 2022 were searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, Wanfang Database, CNKI, and other Chinese and English databases. In addition, the following search keywords were used: Gastric cancer, total gastrectomy, total laparoscopy, laparoscopy-assisted, esophagojejunal anastomosis, gastric/stomach cancer, total gastrectomy, totally/completely laparoscopic, laparoscopic assisted/laparoscopy assisted/laparoscopically assisted, and esophagojejunostomy/esophagojejunal anastomosis. Review Manager 5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis after two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias in the included studies. RESULTS: After layer-by-layer screening, 258 pieces of literature were recovered, and 11 of those pieces were eventually included. This resulted in a sample size of 2421 instances, with 1115 cases falling into the TLTG group and 1306 cases into the LATG group. Age or sex differences between the two groups were not statistically significant, according to the meta-analysis, however the average body mass index of the TLTG group was considerably higher than that of the LATG group (P = 0.01). Compared with those in the LATG group, the incision length in the TLTG group was significantly shorter (P < 0.001), the amount of intraoperative blood loss was significantly lower (P = 0.003), the number of lymph nodes removed was significantly greater (P = 0.04), and the time of first postoperative feeding and postoperative hospitalization were also significantly shorter (P = 0.03 and 0.02, respectively). There were no significant differences in tumor size, length of proximal incisal margin, total operation time, anastomotic time, postoperative pain score, postoperative anal exhaust time, postoperative anastomosis-related complications (including anastomotic fistula, anastomotic stenosis, and anastomotic hemorrhage), or overall postoperative complication rate (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: TLTG and esophagojejunostomy are safe and feasible. Compared with LATG, TLTG has the advantages of less trauma, less bleeding, easier access to lymph nodes, and faster postoperative recovery, and TLTG is also suitable for obese patients.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain management and cognitive function preservation are crucial for patients undergoing thoracoscopic surgery for lung cancer (LC). This is achieved using either a thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) or sufentanil (SUF)-based multimodal analgesia. However, the efficacy and impact of their combined use on postoperative pain and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remain unclear. AIM: To explore the analgesic effect and the influence on POCD of TPVB combined with SUF-based multimodal analgesia in patients undergoing thoracoscopic radical resection for LC to help optimize postoperative pain management and improve patient outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 107 patients undergoing thoracoscopic radical resection for LC at The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Zhengzhou University and Henan Cancer Hospital between May 2021 and January 2023. Patients receiving SUF-based multimodal analgesia (n = 50) and patients receiving TPVB + SUF-based multimodal analgesia (n = 57) were assigned to the control group and TPVB group, respectively. We compared the Ramsay Sedation Scale and visual analog scale (VAS) scores at rest and with cough between the two groups at 2, 12, and 24 h after surgery. Serum levels of epinephrine (E), angio-tensin II (Ang II), norepinephrine (NE), superoxide dismutase (SOD), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and S-100 calcium-binding protein ß (S-100ß) were measured before and 24 h after surgery. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was administered 1 day before surgery and at 3 and 5 days after surgery, and the occurrence of POCD was monitored for 5 days after surgery. Adverse reactions were also recorded. RESULTS: There were no significant time point, between-group, and interaction effects in Ramsay sedation scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). Significantly, there were notable time point effects, between-group differences, and interaction effects observed in VAS scores both at rest and with cough (P < 0.05). The VAS scores at rest and with cough at 12 and 24 h after surgery were lower than those at 2 h after surgery and gradually decreased as postoperative time increased (P < 0.05). The TPVB group had lower VAS scores than the control group at 2, 12, and 24 h after surgery (P < 0.05). The MMSE scores at postoperative days 1 and 3 were markedly higher in the TPVB group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The incidence of POCD was significantly lower in the TPVB group than in the control group within 5 days after surgery (P < 0.05). Both groups had elevated serum E, Ang II, and NE and decreased serum SOD levels at 24 h after surgery compared with the preoperative levels, with better indices in the TPVB group (P < 0.05). Marked elevations in serum levels of VEGF, TGF-ß1, TNF-α, and S-100ß were observed in both groups at 24 h after surgery, with lower levels in the TPVB group than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: TPVB combined with SUF-based multimodal analgesia further relieves pain in patients undergoing thoracoscopic radical surgery for LC, enhances analgesic effects, reduces postoperative stress response, and inhibits postoperative increases in serum VEGF, TGF-ß1, TNF-α, and S-100ß levels. This scheme also reduced POCD and had a high safety profile.

A novel bimetal cluster [Au28Cu12(SR)24](PPh4)4 (SR = 2,4-dichlorothiophenol) has been successfully synthesized, which can be viewed as a Au4@Au24 core and four trimeric Cu3(SR)6 staples. Compared to monometallic Au28(TBBT)20 and Cu28(CHT)18(PPh3)3 clusters, the [Au28Cu12(C6H4Cl2S)24](PPh4)4 cluster has much higher catalytic efficiency for nitrate electroreduction to ammonia.

RESUMO

Atomically precise metal clusters that possess the exact atom number, definitive composition, and tunable geometric and electronic structures have emerged as ideal model catalysts for many important chemical processes. Recently, metal clusters have been widely used as excellent catalysts for hydrogen production to explore the relationship between the structure and catalytic properties at the atomic level. In this review, we systematically summarize the significant developments concerning metal clusters as electrocatalysts and photocatalysts for hydrogen generation. This review also puts forward the challenges and perspectives of atomically precise metal clusters in electrocatalysis and photocatalysis in the hope of providing a valuable reference for the rational design of high-performance catalysts for hydrogen production.

The fermionic Hubbard model (FHM)1 describes a wide range of physical phenomena resulting from strong electron-electron correlations, including conjectured mechanisms for unconventional superconductivity. Resolving its low-temperature physics is, however, challenging theoretically or numerically. Ultracold fermions in optical lattices2,3 provide a clean and well-controlled platform offering a path to simulate the FHM. Doping the antiferromagnetic ground state of a FHM simulator at half-filling is expected to yield various exotic phases, including stripe order4, pseudogap5, and d-wave superfluid6, offering valuable insights into high-temperature superconductivity7-9. Although the observation of antiferromagnetic correlations over short10 and extended distances11 has been obtained, the antiferromagnetic phase has yet to be realized as it requires sufficiently low temperatures in a large and uniform quantum simulator. Here we report the observation of the antiferromagnetic phase transition in a three-dimensional fermionic Hubbard system comprising lithium-6 atoms in a uniform optical lattice with approximately 800,000 sites. When the interaction strength, temperature and doping concentration are finely tuned to approach their respective critical values, a sharp increase in the spin structure factor is observed. These observations can be well described by a power-law divergence, with a critical exponent of 1.396 from the Heisenberg universality class12. At half-filling and with optimal interaction strength, the measured spin structure factor reaches 123(8), signifying the establishment of an antiferromagnetic phase. Our results provide opportunities for exploring the low-temperature phase diagram of the FHM.

Efficient and accurate acquisition of the rice grain protein content (GPC) is important for selecting high-quality rice varieties, and remote sensing technology is an attractive potential method for this task. However, the majority of multispectral sensors are poor predictors of GPC due to their broad spectral bands. Hyperspectral technology provides a new analytical technology for bridging the gap between phenomics and genomics. However, the small size of typical datasets is a constraint for model construction for estimating GPC, limiting their accuracy and reducing their ability to generalize to a wide range of varieties. In this study, we used hyperspectral data of rice grains from 515 japonica varieties and deep convolution generative adversarial networks (DCGANs) to generate simulated data to improve the model accuracy. Features sensitive to GPC were extracted after applying a continuous wavelet transform (CWT), and the estimated GPC model was constructed by partial least squares regression (PLSR). Finally, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was applied to the measured and generated datasets to detect GPC loci. The results demonstrated that the simulated GPC values generated after 8,000 epochs were closest to the measured values. The wavelet feature (WF1743, 2), obtained from the data with the addition of 200 simulated samples, exhibited the highest GPC estimation accuracy (R 2 = 0.58 and RRMSE = 6.70%). The GWAS analysis showed that the estimated values based on the simulated data detected the same loci as the measured values, including the OsmtSSB1L gene related to grain storage protein. This study provides a new technique for the efficient genetic study of phenotypic traits in rice based on hyperspectral technology.

The aim of this study was to explore the neuroprotective effects of the P2X7 receptor antagonist A740003 on retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in chronic intraocular hypertension (COH) experimental glaucoma mouse model. Bioinformatics was used to analyze the glaucoma-related genes. Western blot, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, and immunofluorescence staining techniques were employed to explore the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of A740003 on RGCs in COH retinas. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cell apoptosis were highly related to the pathogenesis of glaucoma. In COH retinas, intraocular pressure elevation significantly increased the levels of translocator protein, a marker of microglial activation, which could be reversed by intravitreal preinjection of A740003. A740003 also suppressed the increased mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL) 1ß and tumor necrosis factor α in COH retinas. In addition, although the mRNA levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and IL-10 were kept unchanged in COH retinas, administration of A740003 could increase their levels. The mRNA and protein levels of Bax and cleaved caspase-3 were increased in COH retinas, which could be partially reversed by A740003, while the levels of Bcl-2 kept unchanged in COH retinas with or without the injections of A740003. Furthermore, A740003 partially attenuated the reduction in the numbers of Brn-3a-positive RGCs in COH mice. A740003 could provide neuroprotective roles on RGCs by inhibiting the microglia activation, attenuating the retinal inflammatory response, reducing the apoptosis of RGCs, and enhancing the survival of RGCs in COH experimental glaucoma.

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) show significant promise in converting CO2 to valuable fuels and chemicals, yet exploiting efficient electrode materials poses a great challenge. Perovskite oxides, known for their stability as SOEC electrodes, require improvements in electrocatalytic activity and conductivity. Herein, vanadium(V) cation is newly introduced into the B-site of Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ perovskite to promote its electrochemical performance. The substitution of variable valence V5+ for Mo6+ along with the creation of oxygen vacancies contribute to improved electronic conductivity and enhanced electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction. Notably, the Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.4V0.1O6-δ based symmetrical SOEC achieves a current density of 1.56 A cm-2 at 1.5 V and 800 °C, maintaining outstanding durability over 300 h. Theoretical analysis unveils that V-doping facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancies, resulting in high intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction. These findings present a viable and facile strategy for advancing electrocatalysts in CO2 conversion technologies.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity-induced kidney injury contributes to the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Here, we identified the functions of ubiquitin-specific peptidase 19 (USP19) in HK-2 cells exposed to a combination of high glucose (HG) and free fatty acid (FFA) and determined its association with TGF-beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1). METHODS: HK-2 cells were exposed to a combination of HG and FFA. USP19 mRNA expression was detected by quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), and protein analysis was performed by immunoblotting (IB). Cell growth was assessed by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) viability and 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) proliferation assays. Cell cycle distribution and apoptosis were detected by flow cytometry. The USP19/TAK1 interaction and ubiquitinated TAK1 levels were assayed by coimmunoprecipitation (Co-IP) assays and IB. RESULTS: In HG+FFA-challenged HK-2 cells, USP19 was highly expressed. USP19 knockdown attenuated HG+FFA-triggered growth inhibition and apoptosis promotion in HK-2 cells. Moreover, USP19 knockdown alleviated HG+FFA-mediated PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1)/Parkin pathway inactivation and increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in HK-2 cells. Mechanistically, USP19 stabilized the TAK1 protein through deubiquitination. Importantly, increased TAK1 expression reversed the USP19 knockdown-mediated phenotypic changes and PINK1/Parkin pathway activation in HG+FFA-challenged HK-2 cells. CONCLUSION: The findings revealed that USP19 plays a crucial role in promoting HK-2 cell dysfunction induced by combined stimulation with HG and FFAs by stabilizing TAK1, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for combating DN.

To address the shortcomings of traditional reliability theory in characterizing the stability of deep underground structures, the advanced first order second moment of reliability was improved to obtain fuzzy random reliability, which is more consistent with the working conditions. The traditional sensitivity analysis model was optimized using fuzzy random optimization, and an analytical calculation model of the mean and standard deviation of the fuzzy random reliability sensitivity was established. A big data hidden Markov model and expectation-maximization algorithm were used to improve the digital characteristics of fuzzy random variables. The fuzzy random sensitivity optimization model was used to confirm the effect of concrete compressive strength, thick-diameter ratio, reinforcement ratio, uncertainty coefficient of calculation model, and soil depth on the overall structural reliability of a reinforced concrete double-layer wellbore in deep alluvial soil. Through numerical calculations, these characteristics were observed to be the main influencing factors. Furthermore, while the soil depth was negatively correlated, the other influencing factors were all positively correlated with the overall reliability. This study provides an effective reference for the safe construction of deep underground structures in the future.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that visual perceptual learning (VPL) is related to modifying neural activity in higher level decision-making regions. However, the causal roles of the prefrontal and visual cortexes in VPL are still unclear. Here, we investigated how anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the prefrontal and visual cortices modulates VPL in the early and later phases and the role of multiple brain regions. METHODS: Perceptual learning on the coherent motion direction identification task included early and later stages. After early training, participants needed to continuously train to reach a plateau; once the plateau was reached, participants entered a later stage. Sixty participants were randomly divided into five groups. Regardless of the training at the early and later stages, four groups received multitarget tDCS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) and right middle temporal area (rMT), single-target tDCS over the rDLPFC, and single-target tDCS over the rMT or sham stimulation, and one group was stimulated at the ipsilateral brain region (i.e., left MT). RESULTS: Compared with sham stimulation, multitarget and two single-target tDCS over the rDLPFC or rMT improved posttest performance and accelerated learning during the early period. However, multitarget tDCS and two single-target tDCS led to equivalent benefits for VPL. Additionally, these beneficial effects were absent when anodal tDCS was applied to the ipsilateral brain region. For the later period, the above facilitating effects on VPL induced by multitarget or single-target tDCS disappeared. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested the causal role of the prefrontal and visual cortices in visual motion perceptual learning by anodal tDCS but failed to find greater beneficial effects by simultaneously stimulating the prefrontal and visual cortices. Future research should investigate the functional associations between multiple brain regions to further promote VPL.

Introduction: Targeted herbicide application refers to precise application of herbicides in weed-infested areas according to the location and density of farmland weeds. At present, targeted herbicide application in wheat fields generally faces problems including the low herbicide adhesion rate, leading to omission and excessive loss of herbicides. Methods: To solve these problems, changes in the impact force of herbicide and the weed leaves in the operation process of a spraying system were studied from the interaction between weeds and herbicides applied. A dynamic model of weed leaves was established. On this basis, the research indicated that the herbicide adhesion rate is highest under spraying pressure of 0.4 MPa and flow rate of 0.011 kg/s when the spray height is 300 mm. To study the dynamic deformation of weed leaves and the distribution of liquid herbicides in the external flow field under weed-herbicide interaction, a dynamic simulation model of herbicide application was built using the finite element method. Results and Discussion: The results show that when the spray height is 300 mm, the maximum weed leaf deformation index (LDI) is 0.43 and the velocity in the external flow field is 0 m/s under spraying pressure of 0.4 MPa and flow rate of 0.011 kg/s. This finding indicates that the herbicide is not splashed elsewhere and the turbulence intensity in the weed area is 2%, implying steady flow of the herbicide, most of which can be retained on weed leaves. Field test results of application quality of the herbicide show that the maximum LDI is 0.41 and the coverage of the herbicide in the sheltered area below the leaves is 19.02% when the spraying pressure is 0.4 MPa, flow rate is 0.011 kg/s, and spray height is 300 mm. This solves the problem of a low rate of utilization of herbicides because the herbicide passes through weed plants, and achieves the precision herbicide application in wheat fields.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the impact of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) on the prevalence of CASP among middle-aged individuals, aiming to provide insights for CASP prevention. METHODS: 1105 subjects were categorized into HHcy group or normal tHcy group based on their plasma total homocysteine (tHcy). All participants underwent carotid artery ultrasonography to assess the presence of unilateral and bilateral CASP. Comparative analyses of demographic and clinical data were conducted between the two groups. Logistic regression and prespecified subgroup analyses were performed to determine whether HHcy independently contributed to bilateral CASP. RESULTS: 132 individuals exhibited bilateral CASP. The prevalence of bilateral CASP was significantly higher in the HHcy group compared to the normal tHcy group (21.55 % vs. 10.82 %, p = 0.003). Univariate logistic analysis showed a significant association between HHcy and the prevalence of bilateral CASP (OR = 2.056, 95 %CI 1.089-3.881, p = 0.026). In all four models of multivariate logistic analysis, HHcy consistently emerged as an independent risk factor for bilateral CASP, with odd ratios of 1.958, 2.047, 2.023, and 2.186. This association remained significant across all five subgroups stratified by age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, and BMI. CONCLUSION: Our studies demonstrated HHcy was an independent risk factor for the prevalence of bilateral CASP in the middle-aged population. Theses results emphasized the importance of addressing HHcy in preventive strategies aimed at mitigating the burden of CASP among middle-aged individuals.

AIM: The commonly recommended endotracheal tube cuff pressure is 20-30 cmH2O. However, some patients require a cuff pressure of >30 cmH2O to prevent air leakage. The study aims to determine the risk factors that contribute to the endotracheal tube cuff pressure of >30 cmH2O to prevent air leakage. DESIGN: A multi-centre prospective observational study. METHODS: Eligible patients undergoing mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit of three hospitals between March 2020 and July 2022 were included. The endotracheal tube cuff pressure to prevent air leakage was determined using the minimal occlusive volume technique. The patient demographics and clinical information were collected. RESULTS: A total of 284 patients were included. Among these patients, 55 (19.37%) patients required a cuff pressure of >30 cmH2O to prevent air leakage. The multivariate logistic regression results revealed that the surgical operation (odds ratio [OR]: 8.485, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.066-67.525, p = 0.043) was inversely associated with the endotracheal tube cuff pressure of >30 cmH2O, while the oral intubation route (OR: 0.127, 95% CI: 0.022-0.750, p = 0.023) and cuff inner diameter minus tracheal area (OR: 0.949, 95% CI: 0.933-0.966, p < 0.001) were negatively associated with the endotracheal tube cuff pressure of >30 cmH2O. Therefore, a significant number of patients require an endotracheal tube cuff pressure of >30 cmH2O to prevent air leakage. Several factors, including the surgical operation, intubation route, and difference between the cuff inner diameter and tracheal area at the T3 vertebra, should be considered when determining the appropriate cuff pressure during mechanical ventilation.

Here we report a diachronic evolvement from tetra-icosahedral Au30Ag12(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24 to quasi-hcp (hexagonal close-packed) Au47Ag19(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)32 via a one-step reduction, in which the size/structure conversion of the two clusters is not a typical Oswald growth process, but involves interface shrinking followed by core rearrangement and surface polymerization. Au30Ag12(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24 has an aesthetic Au18Ag8 kernel that is composed of four interpenetrating Au10Ag3 icosahedra, while Au47Ag19(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)32 has a twisted Au19 core capped by a Au12Ag19 shell that are stacked in a layer-by-layer manner with a quasi-hcp pattern. The discovery of the two clusters not only provides further evidence for icosahedral clusters with longer excited-state lifetime compared to hcp-like clusters, but also discloses a double increase in catalytic reactivity for electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol over quasi-hcp clusters in comparison with icosahedral clusters. This work provides the rationale for reversing the bottom-up growth process to remake bimetal clusters.

Although amplification/overexpression is the predominant mechanism for the oncogenic properties of MDM2, an increasing number of MDM2 somatic missense mutations were identified in cancer patients with the recent advances in sequencing technology. Here, we characterized an MDM2 cancer-associated mutant variant W329G identified from a patient sample that contains a wild-type p53 gene. Trp329 is one of residues that were reported to be critical to MDM2's binding to ribosomal protein L11 (RPL11). We found that the MDM2 W329G mutant was resistant to the inhibitory effect of RPL11 on MDM2-mediated p53 ubiquitination and degradation, in line with its defect on RPL11 binding. Using isogenic U2OS cells with or without endogenous MDM2 W329G mutation, we demonstrated that the expression of classic p53 targets induced by ribosomal stress signals was reduced in mutant cells. RNA-seq analysis revealed that upon 5-FU treatment, the p53 response was significantly impaired. Also, the 5-FU-mediated repression of genes in cell cycle progression and DNA replication was diminished in W329G mutant-containing cells. Physiologically, U2OS W329G cells were more resistant to cell growth inhibition induced by ribosomal stress and exhibited higher glycolytic rates upon 5-FU treatment. Together, our data indicated that cancer-associated MDM2 W329G mutant attenuates ribosomal stress-mediated p53 responses to promote cell survival and glycolysis.

ABSTRACT: Hematogenous or lymphatic intraureteral metastasis from distant primary cancer is very rare. We present contrast-enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings in a case of intraureteral metastasis from colonic adenocarcinoma 3 years after colectomy. The intraureteral showed moderate enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT and increased FDG uptake on PET/CT mimicking a primary ureteral carcinoma. This case suggests that metastatic tumor of the ureter should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with hypermetabolic ureteral lesion and known malignancy.

Suitable combinations of observed datasets for estimating crop model parameters can reduce the computational cost while ensuring accuracy. This study aims to explore the quantitative influence of different combinations of the observed phenological stages on estimation of cultivar-specific parameters (CPSs). We used the CROPGRO-Soybean phenological model (CSPM) as a case study in combination with the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method. Different combinations of four observed phenological stages, including initial flowering, initial pod, initial grain, and initial maturity stages for five soybean cultivars from Exp. 1 and Exp. 3 described in Table 2 are respectively used to calibrate the CSPs. The CSPM, driven by the optimized CSPs, is then evaluated against two independent phenological datasets from Exp. 2 and Exp. 4 described in Table 2. Root means square error (RMSE) (mean absolute error (MAE), coefficient of determination (R2), and Nash Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE)) are 15.50 (14.63, 0.96, 0.42), 4.76 (3.92, 0.97, 0.95), 4.69 (3.72, 0.98, 0.95), 3.91 (3.40, 0.99, 0.96) and 12.54 (11.67, 0.95, 0.60), 5.07 (4.61, 0.98, 0.93), 4.97 (4.28, 0.97, 0.94), 4.58 (4.02, 0.98, 0.95) for using one, two, three, and four observed phenological stages in the CSPs estimation. The evaluation results suggest that RMSE and MAE decrease, and R2 and NSE increase with the increase in the number of observed phenological stages used for parameter calibration. However, there is no significant reduction in the RMSEs (MAEs, NSEs) using two, three, and four observed stages. Relatively reliable optimized CSPs for CSMP are obtained by using at least two observed phenological stages balancing calibration effect and computational cost. These findings provide new insight into parameter estimation of crop models.

BACKGROUND: The present study aims to determine the impact of different cuff diameters on the cuff pressure of endotracheal tubes (ETTs) when the trachea is adequately sealed. METHODS: In the present single-center clinical trial, adult patients who underwent cardiothoracic surgery were assigned to use ETTs from 2 brands (GME and GZW). The primary endpoint comprised of the following: cuff diameter, inner diameter of the ETT, manufacturer, and the number of subjects with tracheal leakage when the cuff pressure was 30 cm H2O. RESULTS: A total of 298 patients were assigned into 2 groups, based on the 2 distinct brands of ETTs: experimental group (n = 122, GME brand) and control group (n = 176, GZW brand). There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics. However, the cuff diameter was significantly smaller in the control group, when compared to the experimental group (P = .001), and the incidence of tracheal leakage was significantly higher in the control group (P = .001). Furthermore, the GME brand ETT had a significantly larger cuff diameter, when compared to the GZW brand ETT. CONCLUSION: The cuff size would mismatch the tracheal area in clinical practice. Therefore, chest computed tomography is recommended to routinely evaluate the tracheal cross-sectional area during anesthesia, in order to ensure the appropriate cuff size selection.
