BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to assess the safety and efficacy of drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) as neoadjuvant therapy before liver transplantation (LT) for advanced-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to analyze the prognostic factors. AIM: To determine whether DEB-TACE before LT is superior to LT for advanced-stage HCC. METHODS: A total of 99 individuals diagnosed with advanced HCC were studied retrospectively. The participants were categorized into the following two groups based on whether they had received DEB-TACE before LT: DEB-TACE group (n = 45) and control group (n = 54). The participants were further divided into two subgroups based on the presence or absence of segmental portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT). The DEB-TACE group consisted of two subgroups: Group A (n = 31) without PVTT and group B (n = 14) with PVTT. The control group also had two subgroups: Group C (n = 37) without PVTT and group D (n = 17) with PVTT. Data on patient demographics, disease characteristics, therapy response, and adverse events (AEs) were collected. The overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were assessed using Kaplan-Meier curves. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted to determine the parameters that were independently related to OS and RFS. RESULTS: The DEB-TACE group exhibited an overall response rate of 86.6%. Following therapy, there was a significant decrease in the median alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level (275.1 ng/mL vs 41.7 ng/mL, P < 0.001). The main AE was post-embolization syndrome. The 2-year rates of RFS and OS were significantly higher in the DEB-TACE group than in the control group (68.9% vs 38.9%, P = 0.003; 86.7% vs 63.0%, P = 0.008). Within the subgroups, group A had higher 2-year rates of RFS and OS compared to group C (71.0% vs 45.9%, P = 0.038; 83.8% vs 62.2%, P = 0.047). The 2-year RFS rate of group B was markedly superior to that of group D (64.3% vs 23.5%, P = 0.002). Results from multivariate analyses showed that pre-LT DEB-TACE [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.73, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.44-5.14, P = 0.04], overall target tumor diameter ≤ 7 cm (HR = 1.98, 95%CI: 1.05-3.75, P = 0.035), and AFP level ≤ 400 ng/mL (HR = 2.34; 95%CI: 1.30-4.19, P = 0.009) were significant risk factors for RFS. Additionally, pre-LT DEB-TACE (HR = 3.15, 95%CI: 1.43-6.96, P = 0.004) was identified as a significant risk factor for OS. CONCLUSION: DEB-TACE is a safe and efficient therapy for advanced-stage HCC and also enhances patient survival after LT.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is reported to improve mood disorders in perimenopausal women and gut microbiome composition is altered during menopausal period. The possible role of microbiome in the treatment effect of melatonin on menopausal depression remains unknown. Here, it is shown that melatonin treatment reverses the gut microbiota dysbiosis and depressive-like behaviors in ovariectomy (OVX) operated mice. This effect of melatonin is prevented by antibiotic cocktails (ABX) treatment. Transferring microbiota harvested from adolescent female mice to OVX-operated mice is sufficient to ameliorate depressive-like behaviors. Conversely, microbiota transplantation from OVX-operated mice or melatonin-treated OVX-operated mice to naïve recipient mice exhibits similar phenotypes to donors. The colonization of Alistipes Inops, which is abundant in OVX-operated mice, confers the recipient with depressive-like behaviors. Further investigation indicates that the expansion of Alistipes Inops induced by OVX leads to the degradation of intestinal tryptophan, which destroys systemic tryptophan availability. Melatonin supplementation restores systemic tryptophan metabolic disorders by suppressing the growth of Alistipes Inops, which ameliorates depressive-like behaviors. These results highlight the previously unrecognized role of Alistipes Inops in the modulation of OVX-induced behavioral disorders and suggest that the application of melatonin to inhibit Alistipes Inops may serve as a potential strategy for preventing menopausal depressive symptoms.

Mercury (Hg) pollution in soil has grown into a severe environmental issue. Effective in situ immobilization techniques are crucially demanded. In this study, we explored the application of carboxymethyl cellulose stabilized iron sulfide nanoparticles (CMC-FeS) for in situ immobilization of Hg in soil. CMC-FeS (a CMC-to-FeS molar ratio of 0.0004) was prepared via the reaction between FeSO4 and Na2S using CMC as a stabilizer. Remedying the Hg-polluted soil using 0.03 % CMC-FeS via batch experiments effectively reduced the acid leachable Hg by 97.5 % upon equilibrium after 71 days. Column elution tests demonstrated that the addition of CMC-FeS decreased the peak Hg concentration by 89.9 % and the total Hg mass eluted by 94.9 % after 523 pore volumes. CMC-FeS immobilized Hg in soil via chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and surface complexation. After the CMC-FeS treatment, Hg was transformed from more available exchangeable, carbonate-bound, and organic material-bound forms into the less available residual fraction, reducing the environmental risk of soil Hg from medium to low. The application of CMC-FeS boosted the soil enzyme activities and enhanced the soil bacterial diversity whereas decreased the production of methylmercury. CMC-FeS also facilitated long-term immobilization of Hg in soil. The acid leachable Hg and relative Hg bioaccessibility was decreased. Lift cycle assessment indicated that the preparation and application of CMC-FeS for in situ Hg remediation in soil met green chemistry principles. The present study confirms that CMC-FeS can be applied as an efficient and "green" amending agent for long-term Hg immobilization in soil/sediment.

Rodents, such as those that feed on plants and nest in plant roots, can significantly affect the growth and development of desert plants. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Rhombomys opimus disturbance on the photosynthetic characteristics and nutrient status of Haloxylon ammodendron at different growth stages in the Gurbantunggut Desert. The effects of great gerbil disturbance on the photosynthetic characteristics of H. ammodendron at different growth stages were investigated by measuring the gas exchange parameters, instantaneous water use efficiency, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of H. ammodendron at different ages (young, middle, and adult) under the disturbance of great gerbils. The soil nutrients in the assimilated branches and rhizosphere of H. ammodendron at different growth stages were tracked to reveal the relationship between the H. ammodendron nutrient content and gerbil disturbance. The results showed that great gerbil disturbance decreased the organic carbon content in the rhizosphere soil of adult H. ammodendron and increased the total nitrogen content in the rhizosphere soil and the nitrogen and potassium contents in the assimilated branches at each growth stage. The net photosynthetic rate and instantaneous water use efficiency of H. ammodendron decreased at each growth stage, and the maximum photochemical efficiency and non-photochemical quenching parameters of the young H. ammodendron decreased. However, the actual photochemical efficiency and photochemical parameters of the middle H. ammodendron increased. It was concluded that the disturbance of great gerbils decreased the photosynthetic capacity of H. ammodendron and increased the content of total nitrogen in the soil and nitrogen and potassium in the plant. This study revealed that the Gurbantunggut Desert great gerbil and H. ammodendron do not have a simple predation relationship. It laid a foundation for the study of the moderate disturbance threshold and better use of the mutually beneficial relationship between the two.

BACKGROUND: To improve liver organ allocation, the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was adopted in candidates reflecting the severity of liver disease and the physical condition of patients. Inflammatory markers are prognostic factors for various cancers and play prognostic roles in patients after liver transplantation (LT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Researchers focused more on pre-LT inflammatory markers, while the role of dynamic change of these inflammatory markers is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prognostic value of pre-LT and post-LT inflammatory markers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We collected the pre-LT complete blood count and the post-LT result with highest count of white blood cells within 48 h. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio and systemic immune-inflammation index were calculated, and their prognostic roles were analyzed for their MELD scores. RESULTS: This retrospective two-center cohort study enrolled 290 patients after LT for HCC. Multivariate analysis identified pre-LT PLR as independent risk factor for recurrence-free survival (RFS) [HR (95%CI): 1.002 (1.000-1.003), p = 0.023]. A high pre-LT PLR or post-LT PLR were associated with poorer RFS (p < 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively). Based on the MELD scores, the pre-LT PLR value was able to predict the RFS in high MELD group (p < 0.001) but had no predictive power in low MELD group (p = 0.076). On the contrary, the post-LT PLR value was better to predict the overall RFS value in low MELD group (p = 0.007) but could not predict the overall RFS value in high MELD group (p = 0.136). CONCLUSIONS: Both pre-LT PLR and post-LT PLR demonstrated prognostic value in patients following LT for HCC. Monitoring PLR values based on the MELD score can improve the predictive prognosis and more effectively guide the individual decisions for the postoperative intervention.

The role of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) in regulating ferroptosis is not fully elucidated. Here, we reveal that pharmacological inhibition of the ETC complex I reduces ubiquinol levels while decreasing ATP levels and activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the two effects known for their roles in promoting and suppressing ferroptosis, respectively. Consequently, the impact of complex I inhibitors on ferroptosis induced by glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) inhibition is limited. The pharmacological inhibition of complex I in LKB1-AMPK-inactivated cells, or genetic ablation of complex I (which does not trigger apparent AMPK activation), abrogates the AMPK-mediated ferroptosis-suppressive effect and sensitizes cancer cells to GPX4-inactivation-induced ferroptosis. Furthermore, complex I inhibition synergizes with radiotherapy (RT) to selectively suppress the growth of LKB1-deficient tumors by inducing ferroptosis in mouse models. Our data demonstrate a multifaceted role of complex I in regulating ferroptosis and propose a ferroptosis-inducing therapeutic strategy for LKB1-deficient cancers.

Emulsified meat products contain high animal fat content, and excessive intake of animal fat is not good for health, so people are paying more and more attention to reduced-fat meat products. This study investigated the impact of varying proportions of pork back-fat and/or resistant starch on the proximate composition, water and fat retention, texture properties, color, and rheology characteristic of pork batter. The results found that replacing pork back-fat with resistant starch and ice water significantly decreased the total lipid and energy contents of cooked pork batter (p < 0.05) while improving emulsion stability, cooking yield, texture, and rheology properties. Additionally, when the pork back-fat replacement ratio was no more than 50%, there was a significant increase in emulsion stability, cooking yield, hardiness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and L* and G' values (p < 0.05). Furthermore, resistant starch and ice water enhanced myosin head and tail thermal stability and increased G' value at 80 °C. However, the initial relaxation times significantly decreased (p < 0.05) and the peak ratio of P21 significantly increased from 84.62% to 94.03%, suggesting reduced fluidity of water. In conclusion, it is feasible to use resistant starch and ice water as a substitute for pork back-fat in order to produce reduced-fat pork batter with favorable gel and rheology properties.

Targeted nanoparticles offer potential to selectively deliver therapeutics to cells; however, their subcellular fate following endocytosis must be understood to properly design mechanisms of drug release. Here we describe a nanoparticle platform and associated cell-based assay to observe lysosome trafficking of targeted nanoparticles in live cells. The nanoparticle platform utilizes two fluorescent dyes loaded onto PEG-poly(glutamic acid) and PEG-poly(Lysine) block co-polymers that also comprise azide reactive handles on PEG termini to attach antibody-based targeting ligands. Fluorophores were selected to be pH-sensitive (pHrodo Red) or pH-insensitive (Alexafluor 488) to report when nanoparticles enter low pH lysosomes. Dye-labelled block co-polymers were further assembled into polyion complex micelle nanoparticles and crosslinked through amide bond formation to form stable nano-scaffolds for ligand attachment. Cell binding and lysosome trafficking was determined in live cells by fluorescence imaging in 96-well plates and quantification of red- and green-fluorescence signals over time. The platform and assay was validated for selection of optimal antibody-derived targeting ligands directed towards CD22 for nanoparticle delivery. Kinetic analysis of uptake and lysosome trafficking indicated differences between ligand types and the ligand with the highest lysosome trafficking efficiency translated into effective DNA delivery with nanoparticles bearing the optimal ligand.


The ability of this pH-sensitive reporter platform to rapidly screen ligands in nanoparticle format will enable identification and production of targeted NPs with desired lysosome trafficking properties.

Bacterial adhesion plays a vital role in forming and shaping the structure of electroactive biofilms that are essential for the performance of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). Type IV pili are known to mediate cell adhesion in many Gram-negative bacteria, but the mechanism of pili-mediated cell adhesion of Geobacter species on anode surface remains unclear. Herein, a minor pilin PilV2 was found to be essential for cell adhesion ability of Geobacter sulfurreducens since the lack of pilV2 gene depressed the cell adhesion capability by 81.2% in microplate and the anodic biofilm density by 23.1 % at -0.1 V and 37.7 % at -0.3 V in BESs. The less cohesiveness of mutant biofilms increased the charge transfer resistance and biofilm resistance, which correspondingly lowered current generation of the pilV2-deficient strain by up to 63.2 % compared with that of the wild-type strain in BESs. The deletion of pilV2 posed an insignificant effect on the production of extracellular polysaccharides, pili, extracellular cytochromes and electron shuttles that are involved in biofilm formation or extracellular electron transfer (EET) process. This study demonstrated the significance of pilV2 gene in cell adhesion and biofilm formation of G. sulfurreducens, as well as the importance of pili-mediated adhesion for EET of electroactive biofilm.

N6-Methyladenosine (m6A), a prevalent posttranscriptional modification, plays an important role in cancer progression. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is chiefly associated with the loss of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene, encoding a component of the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. In this issue of the JCI, Zhang and colleagues unveiled a function of VHL beyond its canonical role as an E3 ubiquitin ligase in regulating hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs). It also governed m6A modification by orchestrating the assembly of m6A writer proteins METTL3 and METTL14, thereby stabilizing PIK3R3 mRNA. Mechanistically, PIK3R3 contributed to p85 ubiquitination, which restrained PI3K/AKT signaling and consequently impeded ccRCC growth in cell and mouse models. This discovery provides potential treatment targets in VHL-deficient ccRCCs.

RESUMO

In cancer treatment, the recurrent challenge of inducing apoptosis through conventional therapeutic modalities, often thwarted by therapy resistance, emphasizes the critical need to explore alternative cell death pathways. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death triggered by the lethal accumulation of lipid peroxides on cellular membranes, has emerged as one such promising frontier in oncology. Induction of ferroptosis not only suppresses tumor growth but also holds potential for augmenting immunotherapy responses and surmounting resistance to existing cancer therapies. This review navigates the role of ferroptosis in tumor suppression. Furthermore, we delve into the complex role of ferroptosis within the tumor microenvironment and its interplay with antitumor immunity, offering insights into the prospect of targeting ferroptosis as a strategic approach in cancer therapy.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that significantly threatens human health. However, the differential diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and active tuberculosis (ATB) remains a challenge for clinicians in early detection and preventive intervention. In this study, we developed a novel biomarker named HP16118P, utilizing 16 helper T lymphocyte (HTL) epitopes, 11 cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) epitopes, and 8 B cell epitopes identified from 15 antigens associated with LTBI-RD using the IEDB database. We analyzed the physicochemical properties, spatial structure, and immunological characteristics of HP16118P using various tools, which indicated that it is a hydrophilic and relatively stable alkaline protein. Furthermore, HP16118P exhibited good antigenicity and immunogenicity, while being non-toxic and non-allergenic, with the potential to induce immune responses. We observed that HP16118P can stimulate the production of high levels of IFN-γ+ T lymphocytes in individuals with ATB, LTBI, and health controls. IL-5 induced by HP16118P demonstrated potential in distinguishing LTBI individuals and ATB patients (p=0.0372, AUC=0.8214, 95% CI [0.5843 to 1.000]) with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 71.43%. Furthermore, we incorporated the GM-CSF, IL-23, IL-5, and MCP-3 induced by HP16118P into 15 machine learning algorithms to construct a model. It was found that the Quadratic discriminant analysis model exhibited the best diagnostic performance for discriminating between LTBI and ATB, with a sensitivity of 1.00, specificity of 0.86, and accuracy of 0.93. In summary, HP16118P has demonstrated strong antigenicity and immunogenicity, with the induction of GM-CSF, IL-23, IL-5, and MCP-3, suggesting their potential for the differential diagnosis of LTBI and ATB.

INTRODUCTION: This study is a retrospective study. This study aims to explore the association between lobectomy in lung cancer patients and subsequent compensatory lung growth (CLG), and to identify factors that may be associated with variations in CLG. METHODS: 207 lung cancer patients who underwent lobectomy at Yunnan Cancer Hospital between January 2020 and December 2020. All patients had stage IA primary lung cancer and were performed by the same surgical team. And computed tomography examinations were performed before and 1 y postoperatively. Based on computed tomography images, the volume of each lung lobe was measured using computer software and manual, the radiological lung weight was calculated. And multiple linear regressions were used to analyze the factors related to the increase in postoperative lung weight. RESULTS: One year after lobectomy, the radiological lung weight increased by an average of 112.4 ± 20.8%. Smoking history, number of resected lung segments, preoperative low attenuation volume, intraoperative arterial oxygen partial pressure/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio and postoperative visual analog scale scores at 48 h were significantly associated with postoperative radiological lung weight gain. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that CLG have occurred after lobectomy in adults. In addition, anesthetists should maintain high arterial oxygen partial pressure/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio during one-lung ventilation and improve acute postoperative pain to benefit CLG.

BACKGROUND: Split liver transplantation (SLT) increases graft availability, but it's safe and effective utilization is insufficiently documented. This study aimed to investigate the association between perioperative body composition abnormalities and outcomes in adult SLT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred forty recipients who underwent SLT in three centers were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Body composition abnormalities including sarcopenia, myosteatosis, visceral obesity, and sarcopenic obesity were evaluated at baseline and 1 month after surgery using computed tomography. Their impact on outcomes including early allograft dysfunction, early complications, ICU stay, graft regeneration rate, and survival was analyzed. RESULTS: Recipients with sarcopenia or myosteatosis had a higher risk of early allograft dysfunction, higher early complication rate, and longer length of ICU stay (all P <0.05), while there was no difference in graft regeneration rate. Recipient and graft survival were significantly worse for recipients with body composition abnormalities (all P <0.05). In multivariable Cox-regression analysis, sarcopenia [hazard ratio (HR)=1.765, P =0.015], myosteatosis (HR=2.066, P =0.002), and visceral obesity (HR=1.863, P =0.008) were independently associated with shorter overall survival. Piling up of the three factors increased the mortality risk stepwise ( P <0.001). Recipients experienced skeletal muscle loss and muscle fat infiltration 1 month after surgery. Postoperative worsening sarcopenia (HR=2.359, P =0.009) and myosteatosis (HR=1.878, P =0.026) were also identified as independent risk factors for mortality. CONCLUSION: Sarcopenia, myosteatosis, and their progression negatively affect outcomes including early allograft dysfunction, early complications, ICU stay and survival after SLT. Systemic evaluation and dynamic monitoring of body composition are valuable.

Sirolimus is a regularly applied immunosuppressant for patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Sirolimus not only significantly inhibits HCC recurrence but also protects renal function. However, the improvement effect of sirolimus on nontumour-related death in patients is still unknown. The aim of our study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of sirolimus on nontumour-related deaths. In this study, we retrospectively enrolled 403 LT patients with HCC from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2018. The median follow-up time was 47.1 months. The patients were divided into the sirolimus group (N = 184) and the sirolimus-free group (N = 219). There were no significant differences between the sirolimus group and the sirolimus-free group in survival (P = 0.054). In transplant patients who exceeded the Milan or Hangzhou criteria, the sirolimus group achieved higher survival than the sirolimus-free group (P = 0.005; P = 0.02). Moreover, multivariate analysis showed that sirolimus strongly reduced the hazard ratio (HR) for nontumour-related death in LT patients who exceeded the Milan (HR: 0.42; 95% CI: 0.18-1; P = 0.05) or Hangzhou criteria (HR: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.08-0.89; P = 0.032). HCC recurrence increased the risk of nontumour-related death. In conclusion, sirolimus-based immunosuppression can significantly reduce nontumour-related death in LT patients who exceed the criteria for transplantation. In addition, this finding will further promote the application of sirolimus after liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Repeated exposure to cocaine induces microglial activation. Cocaine exposure also induces a release of high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) from neurons into the extracellular space in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). HMGB1 is an important late inflammatory mediator of microglial activation. However, whether the secretion of HMGB1 acts on microglia or contributes to cocaine addiction is largely unknown. METHODS: Rats were trained by intraperitoneal cocaine administration and cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP). Expression of HMGB1 was regulated by viral vectors. Activation of microglia was inhibited by minocycline. Interaction of HMGB1 and the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) was disrupted by peptide. RESULTS: Cocaine injection facilitated HMGB1 signaling, together with the delayed activation of microglia concurrently in the NAc. Furthermore, the inhibition of HMGB1 or microglia activation attenuated cocaine-induced CPP. Box A, a specific antagonist to interrupt the interaction of HMGB1 and RAGE, abolished the expression of cocaine reward memory. Meanwhile, the inhibition of HMGB1-RAGE interaction suppressed cocaine-induced microglial activation, as well as the consolidation of cocaine-induced memory. CONCLUSION: All above results suggest that the neural HMGB1 induces activation of microglia through RAGE, which contributes to the consolidation of cocaine reward memory. These findings offer HMGB1-RAGE axis as a new target for the treatment of drug addiction.

Resistance to poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) limits the therapeutic efficacy of PARP inhibition in treating breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1)-deficient cancers. Here we reveal that BRCA1 has a dual role in regulating ferroptosis. BRCA1 promotes the transcription of voltage-dependent anion channel 3 (VDAC3) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4); consequently, BRCA1 deficiency promotes cellular resistance to erastin-induced ferroptosis but sensitizes cancer cells to ferroptosis induced by GPX4 inhibitors (GPX4i). In addition, nuclear receptor coactivator 4 (NCOA4)-mediated ferritinophagy and defective GPX4 induction unleash potent ferroptosis in BRCA1-deficient cancer cells upon PARPi and GPX4i co-treatment. Finally, we show that xenograft tumors derived from BRCA1-mutant breast cancer patients with PARPi resistance exhibit decreased GPX4 expression and high sensitivity to PARP and GPX4 co-inhibition. Our results show that BRCA1 deficiency induces a ferroptosis vulnerability to PARP and GPX4 co-inhibition and inform a therapeutic strategy for overcoming PARPi resistance in BRCA1-deficient cancers.

Recent studies have identified metabolic cell death as unique forms of regulated cell death resulting from an imbalance in the cellular metabolism. This review discusses the mechanisms of metabolic cell death-ferroptosis, cuproptosis, disulfidptosis, lysozincrosis, and alkaliptosis-and explores their potential in cancer therapy. Our review underscores the complexity of the metabolic cell death pathways and offers insights into innovative therapeutic avenues for cancer treatment.

Ferroptosis has been recognized as a unique cell death modality driven by excessive lipid peroxidation and unbalanced cellular metabolism. In this study, we established a protein interaction landscape for ferroptosis pathways through proteomic analyses, and identified choline/ethanolamine phosphotransferase 1 (CEPT1) as a lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 (LPCAT3)-interacting protein that regulates LPCAT3 protein stability. In contrast to its known role in promoting phospholipid synthesis, we showed that CEPT1 suppresses ferroptosis potentially by interacting with phospholipases and breaking down certain pro-ferroptotic polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-containing phospholipids. Together, our study reveals a previously unrecognized role of CEPT1 in suppressing ferroptosis.

To study the impact of ultrasonic duration (0, 30, and 60 min) and sodium bicarbonate concentration (0% and 0.2%) on the gel properties of reduced-salt pork myofibrillar protein, the changes in cooking yield, colour, water retention, texture properties, and dynamic rheology were investigated. The findings revealed that added sodium bicarbonate significantly increased (P < 0.05) cooking yield, hardness, springiness, and strength of myofibrillar protein while reducing centrifugal loss. Furthermore, the incorporation of sodium bicarbonate led to a significant decrease in L⁎, a⁎, b⁎, and white values of cooked myofibrillar protein; these effects were further amplified with increasing ultrasonic duration (P < 0.05). Additionally, storage modulus (G') significantly increased for myofibrillar protein treated with ultrasonic-assisted sodium bicarbonate treatment resulting in a more compact gel structure post-cooking. In summary, the results demonstrated that ultrasonic-assisted sodium bicarbonate treatment could enhance the tightness of reduced-salt myofibrillar protein gel structure while improving the water retention and texture properties.
