RESUMO

Parasitosis in horses may be uncontrolled and expose breeders and owners to serious financial losses or, possibly, to the loss of animals. Therefore, the prevention and monitoring of the development of parasitic diseases should play an important role in the breeding process. The aim of this study was to confirm the influence of factors such as age, breed, herd size, deworming program, and type of anthelmintics, on the prevalence and intensity of parasites (helminths) in domestic horses in Lower Silesia. The study was carried out between August and November of 2020. The samples of horse feces were collected from 50 different stables in the area of Lower Silesia, Poland. A total of 286 individuals from various breeds were examined. Detailed analysis revealed that the mean age of infected horses was significantly lower than in uninfected horses. The mean time since the last deworming procedure was almost twice as low in uninfected horses than in infected ones. Additionally, the deworming agent affects the prevalence of infection. The analysis was also performed for the same factors in reference to quantitative data. The mean EPG was four-fold higher in juvenile horses than in adults and three-fold higher when the horses were dewormed with the use of fenbendazole instead of ivermectin or ivermectin with praziquantel combined.

RESUMO

We searched for immunogenic mismatches of H-Y minor histocompatibility antigens among unrelated HLA-matched donor-recipient pairs and for their association with transplant outcomes. We included 92 patients who were treated with 10/10 HLA allele-matched, unrelated allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT). H-Y genotyping was performed in the Regional Blood Center with use of the Dynal Minor Histocompatibility Antigen Typing Kit. H-Y mismatches in the graft-versus-host direction of female donor to male recipient decreased the relapse rate (6% vs 23%; P=.046) and tended to improve disease-free survival (79% vs 44%; P=.067), but it also increased the incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease (66% vs 38%; P=.02). Thus it influenced the results of alloHSCT from HLA-matched unrelated donors. The results of this study may help to explain the impact of gender differences between donor and recipient in alloHSCT.

RESUMO

Six dogs, five males and one hermaphrodite, were diagnosed with hypospadias. Two of the five males had the penile form of the condition, two had the perineal form and one had the glandular form; the hermaphrodite had the scrotal form. The hermaphrodite had no prostate gland and no right testicle; it had a normal right ovary and horn of the uterus but the left horn was joined to the testicle. Its karyotype showed 78 chromosomes, all in metaphase, and two typical sex chromosomes X and Y.

RESUMO

Various types of hypospadias and methods of surgical treatment of this anomaly in 6 dogs was described in this article. Methods of surgical treatment were set up individually for each case and depended on the type of hypospadias and coexisting anomalies. Shortening of the penis was performed in two dogs, amputation in three cases and an urethral reconstruction in one patient. Castration was performed in three cases. Persistent frenulum of the prepuce was found in two dogs. Additionally three patients were submitted to the plastic surgery of the prepuce anomalies. In one dog, the loose and free falling part of the prepuce was suspended and attached to the abdominal integument according to the original own method. In all dogs, uncomplicated wound healing was observed. Surgical procedures resulted in improved cosmesis with reducing clinical signs of hypospadias and other coexistent anomalies.
