RESUMO

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents. The standard and most effective treatment is wide resection of the tumor combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a genetically determined three-dimensional spinal deformity, which occurs in teenage patients and is mostly progressive. The basic management strategy is surgical treatment when the curve exceeds 50 degrees. However, the indications are different in oncologic patients. The aim of this study was to describe a case of adolescent scoliosis with osteosarcoma of the pelvis. The authors conducted a scoping review using PubMed and Embase to analyze the state of knowledge. The presented paper is the first report of pelvis osteosarcoma coexisting with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Treatment for this complex case finished with very good results, with no recurrence observed during the nine-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The increasing number of late complications described after cesarean sections is prompting a reexamination of the indications for them in pregnant women. The high percentage of pregnancies terminated by preventive cesarean section for non-obstetric reasons also largely involves orthopedic conditions. A challenge for obstetricians is pregnant patients with orthopedic conditions both before and during pregnancy. Pregnant women with a history of orthopedic surgery require special attention. The lack of consensus in this area, physicians' fear of patients' claims and the skewing of patients' requests for surgical termination of pregnancy have prompted an analysis and systematization of existing knowledge in this field. METHODS: References published up to 30 June 2023 in five databases Pubmed, Embase are included. Keywords have been checked for the following: pubic symphysis diastasis, lumbar disc herniation, past hip arthroplasty and fractures in the pelvic bones. In the described conditions complicating pregnancy, the mode of delivery was taken into account. RESULTS: All included studies were screened and reviewed by at least two authors until an overall consensus of 50 articles was reached. CONCLUSIONS: Orthopedic indications for cesarean section in many cases should not be treated imperatively, since natural delivery after correct fusion of a pelvic fracture, implantation of a hip endoprosthesis or a limited dissection of the pubic symphysis is possible and is not associated with a higher risk of obstetric or orthopedic complications. Extra-obstetric indications for cesarean section should be determined individually for each pregnant woman in a multidisciplinary team, since orthopedic conditions may overlap with obstetric pathology in the pelvis.

Recent years have seen an increased interest in the role of oxidative stress (OS) in pregnancy. Pregnancy inherently heightens susceptibility to OS, a condition fueled by a systemic inflammatory response that culminates in an elevated presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in the circulatory system. The amplified OS in pregnancy can trigger a series of detrimental outcomes such as underdevelopment, abnormal placental function, and a host of pregnancy complications, including pre-eclampsia, embryonic resorption, recurrent pregnancy loss, fetal developmental anomalies, intrauterine growth restriction, and, in extreme instances, fetal death. The body's response to mitigate the uncontrolled increase in RNS/ROS levels requires trace elements that take part in non-enzymatic and enzymatic defense processes, namely, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and selenium (Se). Determination of ROS concentrations poses a challenge due to their short half-lives, prompting the use of marker proteins, including malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH). These markers, indicative of oxidative stress intensity, can offer indirect assessments of pregnancy complications. Given the limitations of conducting experimental studies on pregnant women, animal models serve as valuable substitutes for in-depth research. This review of such models delves into the mechanism of OS in pregnancy and underscores the pivotal role of OS markers in their evaluation.

Osteoporosis is a multifactorial and polygenic disease caused by an imbalance between osteoclastogenesis and osteoblastogenesis, leading to a decrease in bone mineral density and the occurrence of disorders in the microarchitecture and metabolism of bone tissue. In postmenopausal women, there is a significant decrease in the production of estrogens, which play a key role in maintaining proper bone mineral density. Estrogens have an inhibitory effect on the development and activity of osteoclasts by reducing the synthesis of pro-resorption cytokines and stimulating the expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG). Osteoprotegerin is a cytokine that prevents bone loss by inhibiting the process of osteoclastogenesis, reducing bone resorption. The aim of our study was to determine the influence of the rs3102735 (-163A>G), rs3134070 (-245T>G), rs207361 (-950T>C), rs7844539 (6890A>C), and rs2073618 (1181G>C) polymorphisms of the OPG gene on the risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia in postmenopausal Polish women. The study included 802 unrelated women (osteoporosis: n = 317, osteopenia: n = 110, controls: n = 375) at postmenopausal age (54.7 ± 8.6 years). Genetic analysis was performed using real-time PCR. BMD values as well as clinical and bone parameters with the tested polymorphisms were analyzed among the study population. Analysis of the PPARG rs1801282 variants did not show any association with the risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia. However, for the OPG rs207361 polymorphism, we observed a statistically significant association with the risk of osteoporosis, suggesting that the OPG rs207361 variant may be one of the genetic markers associated with the pathogenesis of osteoporosis.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of leukemia known for its unfavorable prognoses, prompting research efforts to discover new therapeutic targets. One area of investigation involves examining extracellular factors, particularly CXC chemokines. While CXCL12 (SDF-1) and its receptor CXCR4 have been extensively studied, research on other CXC chemokine axes in AML is less developed. This study aims to bridge that gap by providing an overview of the significance of CXC chemokines other than CXCL12 (CXCR1, CXCR2, CXCR3, CXCR5, and CXCR6 ligands and CXCL14 and CXCL17) in AML's oncogenic processes. We explore the roles of all CXC chemokines other than CXCL12, in particular CXCL1 (Gro-α), CXCL8 (IL-8), CXCL10 (IP-10), and CXCL11 (I-TAC) in AML tumor processes, including their impact on AML cell proliferation, bone marrow angiogenesis, interaction with non-leukemic cells like MSCs and osteoblasts, and their clinical relevance. We delve into how they influence prognosis, association with extramedullary AML, induction of chemoresistance, effects on bone marrow microvessel density, and their connection to French-American-British (FAB) classification and FLT3 gene mutations.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and selected hormonal disorders and concentrations of magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P) in both blood serum and bone tissue. This study involved 152 men with and without MetS. In the blood of the patients we examined, we determined levels of: testosterone (TT), estradiol (E2), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), insulin (I), osteocalcin (OC), and concentrations of markers of bone turnover. The concentration of Mg, Ca, and P was determined in the serum and bone tissue. In patients with MetS, the serum Ca concentration correlated with procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP) and parathyroid hormone (PTH). Among patients without MetS, the serum Ca concentration correlated with SHBG and OC, while Ca concentration in bone correlated with the lipid accumulation product (LAP) index and the body mass index (BMI). After analyzing the serum Mg concentration, positive correlations were observed with E2, PINP, and PTH in patients with MetS. In patients without MetS, the Mg concentration in bone positively correlated with the BMI and the LAP index. Our study findings suggest that increased Mg levels could have an impact on bone tissue metabolism. Elevated serum Mg levels may be associated with changes in sex hormone concentrations and alterations in bone turnover markers.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies in Poland. Based on the findings of clinical trials, it is safe to conclude that genetic predisposition and environmental factors are the main factors responsible for the formation of colorectal cancer.The NQO1 gene plays an important role in reducing endogenous and exogenous quinones as well as quinone compounds to hydroquinones. It is an enzyme which is a part of the body's antioxidant defense system. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation between the 609C > T polymorphism of the NQO1 gene and colorectal cancer risk in the Polish population. A total of 512 people were recruited for the study, including 279 patients with colorectal cancer, diagnosed at the University Hospital, Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood and the analyzed polymorphism was determined by PCR-RFLP. In the present study, we analyzed the clinical valuesand frequency of NQO1 609C > T polymorphism in patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and controls. In case of the carriers of the TT genotype of the NQO1 polymorphism, an elevated risk for colorectal cancer was observed (OR = 2.96; 95% CI: 1.02-10.40). The analysis of the clinical parameters concerning the location and characteristics of the tumor stage revealed a statistically significant increase in the risk for colorectal cancer in the carriers of the TT genotype of the NQO1 polymorphism.

INTRODUCTION: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition caused by chronic compression of the median nerve. The diagnosis is made mainly on the basis of clinical image and confirmed with electrodiagnostic testing (electromyography and nerve conduction study); however, these methods do not always aid in reaching the diagnosis of CTS. Moreover, they are invasive examinations, unpleasant for the patient and have to be performed by a qualified physician. AIM: An evaluation of the usefulness of dynamic thermography in the diagnosis of CTS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty patients were included in the study group. CTS was diagnosed based on clinical examination and electromyography. Forty healthy volunteers were included in the control group. Each of the participants was examined thrice with dynamic thermography. The patient's hands were first cooled down and then a thermal camera measured their return to normal temperature. The measurement was repeated on the dorsal and volar aspects of each hand. RESULTS: The results obtained in the study show that a relief of symptoms after carpal tunnel release does not correlate with thermal image. Moreover, the return to normal hand temperature was faster in the control group. In patients with unilateral CTS, no difference was observed in thermographic images of the affected and healthy hands. CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic thermography can be useful in confirming CTS diagnosis.Dynamic thermography does not allow for objective assessment of patient's complaints in the postoperative period.This method has currently limited clinical application. Due to complexity, it presently serves mainly scientific purposes.

The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of iron, nickel, molybdenum, and vanadium in the knee joint. We also examined the relationships between the concentrations of these metals in the knee joint and the influence of varied factors on the concentration of Fe, Ni, Mo, and V. The study of these trace elements is important, because these elements are used alone and in combination in diet supplements, and they are components of biomaterials implanted in medicine. The study materials, consisting of the spongy bone, cartilage, meniscus, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and infrapatellar fat pad, were obtained from 34 women and 12 men from northwestern Poland. The concentrations of Ni, Fe, Mo, and V were determined using spectrophotometric atomic absorption in inductively coupled argon plasma (ICP-AES). We found significantly higher Mo concentrations in the ACL of women than men. There was a significant difference in the Mo concentration in the spongy bone between patients from cities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants and patients from cities with more than 100,000 residents. Iron concentrations in the spongy bone were higher in non-smoking patients and those who did not consume alcohol. Vanadium concentrations were higher in the infrapatellar fat pads in abstainers. In patients who had not undergone arthroscopy surgery, V concentration was lower in cartilage. The concentrations of V in the cartilage and infrapatellar fat pad were higher in osteoporotic patients than in non-osteoporotic patients. There were significant differences in Fe concentrations in the meniscus, with the lowest in osteoporotic patients. We noted lower Mo concentrations in the spongy bone of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, we noted some new interactions among metals in the studied structures of the knee joint. The results reported in this study show the influence of gender, place of residence, smoking, consumption of alcohol, arthroscopy surgery, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis on the Fe, Ni, Mo, and V concentrations in the studied structures of the knee joint.

RESUMO

Ollier disease is a rare congenital disease in which multiple enchondromas occur. The tumors can transform to malignant chondrosarcomas of various histologic grades. The patient we described has been treated in our orthopedic department six times, always being referred on account of new lesions. The tumors were excised with margins of healthy tissue. Each tumor was subjected to a histological examination to determine its type and grade. Chondroid tumors should be diagnosed carefully, because the treatment depends on their histologic features. If surgery is performed, removal of the tumor with a margin of healthy tissue is crucial for the patient's well-being and good prognosis.

A number of studies have demonstrated links between spiritual struggles and health problems. As yet, however, only a few studies have investigated what makes religious struggle a source of mental problems or a source of well-being. We determined whether spiritual growth, spiritual decline, and meaning-making mediated the relationship between religious struggle and anxiety and satisfaction with life. Of the 180 respondents, 92 were women, and mean (SD) age was 24 (8.2) years. Each respondent completed the Religious and Spiritual Struggles Scale, the Meaning-Making Scale, the Spiritual Transformation Scale, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Religious struggle correlated positively with anxiety and negatively with satisfaction with life. Spiritual growth mediated the relationship between moral and demonic struggle with satisfaction with life, and spiritual decline mediated the relationship between demonic, moral, and interpersonal struggle with anxiety. Finally, meaning-making mediated the relationship between religious doubt and satisfaction with life.

BACKGROUND: CERAMENT™|BONE VOID FILLER is an injectable and moldable ceramic bone substitute material intended for bone voids. The material consists of hydroxyapatite and calcium sulfate hemihydrate. The aim of this study is to present the first long-term results following open curettage of benign bone tumors and tumor-like lesions and void filling with this novel injectable and synthetic bone graft. METHODS: Thirty three patients were enrolled into the study between June 2013 and October 2014 .Totally, we treated 24 women and 9 men with a median age of 47 years (range: 22-74). All patients suffered from primary musculoskeletal system disorders (enchondroma 63,6%, giant cell tumor 18%, aneurysmal bone cyst 9%, fibrous dysplasia 9%, Gaucher disease 3%). We performed curettage of pathological lesions, then the bone substitute was administered by means of needle to the void. RESULTS: The average follow-up was 13 months (range: 2-13 months, median 10 months). No metastasis or recurrence had been detected. We received significant clinical improvement relating to VAS, MSTS, and oncological results. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study report that CERAMENT can be successfully used as a bone substitute in patients with various bone diseases, as well as benign bone tumors. CERAMENT can provide an effective and long-term solution for reconstructive procedures following curettage of bone tumors and tumor like lesions.

Disturbed or delayed healing remains one of the most serious fracture-related complications, despite bone capacity for internal regeneration and reabsorption. Considerable progress in the understanding and treatment of fractures has been noted. The aim of our study was to evaluate treatment outcome in patients (smokers and non-smokers) with post-traumatic pseudoarthrosis. HYPOTHESIS: Determinate when administration of growth factors is most beneficial, and whether it accelerates bone union. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included patients treated for post-traumatic pseudoarthrosis resulting from multiple bone fractures. The study group and controls were further subdivided into: non-smokers, non-smokers >2 years after quitting, and smokers. Independent tests were performed for men and women. The study group, apart from other methods of treatment, received concentrated PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to aid the process of bone healing, or in cases of delayed healing confirmed by radiological assessment on follow-up visits. RESULTS: Mean time of fracture healing was 8 weeks for non-smokers and non-smokers >2 years after quitting, whereas in smokers the healing process was significantly prolonged (18 weeks in both, men and women). CONCLUSIONS: The risk for infection is smaller in non-smokers as compared to smokers, with the latter being at an elevated risk for bone inflammation and delayed union.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between the concentrations of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in cartilage, anterior cruciate ligament, and meniscus samples obtained following knee joint surgery in patients with osteoarthritis in northwestern Poland.‬ Furthermore, we examined the relationships between the concentrations of these metals in the studied parts of the knee joint and the influences of gender, age, BMI and hypertension. We found significantly higher concentrations of Ca, Mg, and Zn in the cartilage of men than in women and a significantly higher Pb concentration in the meniscus of the men. We also found a higher concentration of Pb in the cartilage of patients over 65 years of age.‬ There were no differences in the concentrations of the studied metals between patients with and without hypertension.‬ There was no relationship between Ca, Mg, Zn, and Pb levels in analyzed materials and BMI. Furthermore, we noted some new interactions between metals in the studied structures of the knee joint. The results reported in the study shows the influence of age, gender and BMI on the Ca, Mg, Zn and Pb in the studied structures of the knee joint.

Due the long-term nature of joint tissue remodeling processes, knee structures including meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can be a model for studying the bioaccumulation of mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se). The accumulation and retention of Hg in human tissues can have a negative effect on the proper functioning of homeostasis-affecting organisms. A factor of chronic poisoning with Hg forms is probably the Se:Hg ratio in tissues. Se:Hg molar ratios below one may increase Hg toxicity potentials, while molar ratios that approach or exceed one effectively may protect against Hg toxicity. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine total mercury (THg), Se, and Se:THg molar ratios in the cartilage, meniscus and ACL of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) from northwestern Poland. In all studied samples (n=95), we observed higher Se than THg concentration. Taking into consideration the biological factors, we found significantly higher THg levels in the cartilage of women, patients under 65 years of age, patients without hypertension and in the ACL of patients with spinal degenerative disease. We found higher Se levels in the meniscus in women than in men. In all studied parts of the knee joint, we found the Se:THg molar ratio higher than one, which suggests that the joint forming structures are not much exposed to THg. Moreover the results reported here may provide a basis for establishing reference values for the meniscus and ACL in patients with OA who had undergone knee replacement surgery.

Treatment of bone metastasis is a major challenge for current and future orthopedic and oncology specialists. For the treatment of single metastases, there is a continuing search for effective local treatments that do not affect the whole patient. The current report describes the case of single breast cancer metastasis to the pelvic bone in a 50-year-old woman treated surgically by bone osteotomy combined with local doxorubicin application. The presence of cancer cells was confirmed by histopathological examination. After 6 months, the same defect was operated on again and a successful therapeutic result was confirmed by negative tumor pathology tests. The bone defect caused by osteotomy was reconstructed with allogenic bone grafts that healed completely over 14 months. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first to combine the removal bone metastasis with direct local cytostatic drug administration without the use of a specific carrier, followed by successful bone reconstruction 6 months later using bone allografts. Thus, single bone metastasis may be successfully treated with resection and local cytostatic administration, enabling bone reconstruction in the postoperative period. The potential benefits of such treatments must be evaluated by considering the potential risks involved, including necrosis of surrounding soft tissues and general reactions to the chemotherapy. No data has been available until now regarding the risk of cancer disease generalization being influenced by such treatments, but patient quality of life can be improved significantly by the successful removal of a solitary bone metastasis. The present case report supports the continuation of research on improving local cytostatic drug administration during the treatment of bone metastasis.

CONTEXT: The most commonly injured body part for skiing has been found to be the knee. The rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was the most frequent diagnosis. ACL ruptures are determined by several extrinsic and intrinsic risk factors including those that are hormonal, neuromuscular, anatomical, or genetic. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of both COL1A1 rs1800012 (+1245G/T) and COL1A1 rs1107946 (-1997G/T) polymorphisms, individually and as haplotypes, with ACL ruptures in recreational Polish skiers. DESIGN: Genomic DNA was extracted from buccal cells donated by the subjects, and genotyping was carried out using real-time polymerase chain reaction. SETTINGS: University laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: 138 male recreational skiers with surgically diagnosed primary ruptures and 183 apparently healthy male recreational skiers not differing markedly in age or level of exposure to ACL injury. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: COL1A1 rs1800012 and COL1A1 rs1107946 polymorphisms. RESULTS: There were significant differences in genotype distribution of the COL1A1 rs1800012 polymorphism between the ACL rupture group and the control group. The GG homozygotes were underrepresented in the ACL rupture group compared with the control group. There were no significant differences in genotype distribution or allele frequency of COL1A1 rs1107946 polymorphisms between the ACL rupture group and the control group. The G-G (COL1A1 rs1800012G and COL1A1 rs1107946G) haplotype was the most common. There were no significant differences in haplotype distribution between the ACL-rupture and control groups. CONCLUSION: The study showed that GG homozygotes were underrepresented in the ACL-rupture group compared with the control group, which suggests an association with reduced risk of ACL injury.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) helps regulate neuroinflammation and anxiety and could conceivable predict early post-operative pain and function after fast-track total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: In patients with severe osteoarthritic knees undergoing TKA, we assessed: the correlations between pre-operative concentrations of TNF-α in synovial fluid; pre- and six-week post-operative knee function and pain; pre- and post-operative anxiety; pre- and post-operative synovial fluid concentrations of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP); age and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Of 100 enrolled patients, 78 had evaluable TNF-α data, and 58 had evaluable COMP data. Pre-operative TNF-α concentrations were inversely correlated with post-operative pain scores during walking (rS=-0.26, P=0.03) and with change of pain at rest during six weeks after TKA (rs=-0.28, P=0.03) and were directly correlated with a higher post-operative Knee Society score (KSS) (rS=0.43, P<0.001) and with greater increases in this score during six weeks after TKA (rS=0.33, P=0.001). Mean TNF-α concentrations were higher in the 39 patients reporting any pre-operative pain at rest than in 36 patients reporting no pre-operative pain (P=0.015) and were the only independent predictor of pre-operative pain at rest (OR=13, P=0.02). Independent predictors of better post-operative knee function were higher log-transformed TNF-α concentrations (ß=0.38, P=0.002) and male sex (ß=0.28, P=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: High levels of pre-operative TNF-α concentrations could be used as an independent predictor of better knee function at six weeks of follow-up. In patients with lower pre-operative TNF-α concentrations, post-operative pain management may improve the early outcome of the operated joint.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Anterior cruciate ligament rupture is one of the most common knee injuries in sports. Although various intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors have been identified, the exact aetiology of the injury is not yet fully understood. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the collagen type I (COL1A1) gene have been shown to be associated with several complex connective tissue disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the association of -1997G/T polymorphisms in the COL1A1 gene with ACL ruptures in Polish recreational skiers in a case-control study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 180 male and female recreational skiers with surgically diagnosed with primary ACL ruptures were recruited for the study, all of whom qualified for ligament reconstruction. The control group was comprised of 245 apparently healthy male and female skiers with a comparable level of exposure to ACL injury, none of whom had any self-reported history of ligament or tendon injury. DNA samples extracted from the oral epithelial cells were genotyped for -1997G/T polymorphisms using PCR method. RESULTS: Genotype distribution in the cases (GG-82.2% GT-16.7%; TT-1.1%) showed significant difference (P=0.036) compared to controls (GG-71.4% GT-26.5%; TT-2.2%). The frequency of the GG genotype in the ACL rupture group was also statistically significant (p=0.011, Fisher's exact test recessive mode: GG vs GT+TT). The frequency of the G allele was higher in these cases (90.6%), and also statistically significant (p=0.012) when compared with controls (84.7%). CONCLUSION: The results obtained indicate that the -1997G/T COL1A1 gene is one of the genetic markers to be taken into the consideration in the identification of the risk of ACL injury.

Achilles injury is a common musculoskeletal disorder. Bilateral rupture of the Achilles tendon, however, is much less common and usually occurs spontaneously. Complete, traumatic, and bilateral ruptures are rare and typically require long periods of immobilization before the patient can return to full weightbearing. A 52-year-old male was hospitalized for bilateral traumatic rupture to both Achilles tendons. No risk factors for tendon rupture were found. Blood samples revealed no peripheral blood pathologic features. Both tendons were repaired with percutaneous, minimally invasive surgery using the Achillon(®) tendon suture system. Rehabilitation was begun 4 weeks later. An ankle-foot orthosis was prescribed to provide ankle support with an adjustable range of movement, and active plantar flexion was set at 0° to 30°. The patient remained non-weightbearing with the ankle-foot orthosis device and performed active range-of-motion exercises. At 8 weeks after surgery, we recommended that he begin walking with partial weightbearing using a foot-tibial orthosis with the range of motion set to 45° plantar flexion and 15° dorsiflexion. At 10 weeks postoperatively, he was encouraged to return to full weightbearing on both feet. Beginning rehabilitation as soon as possible after minimally invasive surgery, compared with 6 weeks of immobilization after surgery, provided a rapid resumption to full weightbearing. We emphasize the clinical importance of a safe, simple treatment program that can be followed for a patient with damage to the Achilles tendons. To our knowledge, ours is the first report of minimally invasive repair of bilateral simultaneous traumatic rupture of the Achilles tendon.
