RESUMO

The influence of the surface chemistry of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) on the formation of lipid bilayers is studied here for PEMs with either polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) or polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) as a polycation as a top layer, and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) as a polyanion. Small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) composed of phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl serine at a 50 : 50 molar ratio are deposited on top of the PEM films. The assembly of the SUVs into bilayers is studied via a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). SUV deposition on PDADMAC/PSS results in vesicle adsorption while on PAH/PSS under the same conditions a bilayer is formed mainly due to weak interactions between the quaternary amines of PDADMAC. FRAP measurements confirm that SUVs are not fused on top of PDADMAC/PSS. The effect of phosphate ions, in solution, on the formation of lipid bilayers is also analysed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows the complexation of phosphate salts to the primary amines of PAH and no interaction with the quaternary amines of PDADMAC. ζ-potential measurements show a potential close to 0 for the PAH/PSS multilayers in PBS while PDADMAC/PSS displays a potential of 25 mV. A model is presented for the formation of lipid bilayers on PAH/PSS PEMs taking into account the role of phosphate ions in decreasing the electrostatic interactions between SUVs and PEMs and the formation of hydrogen bonds between the phospholipids and the primary amines of PAH.

RESUMO

The electrical Freedericksz transition characteristics of planar aligned liquid crystal cells doped with harvested single ferroelectric domain 9 nm nanoparticles of BaTiO(3) have been measured. We demonstrate for the first time that the electrical pre-history of the cells imparts significant polarity sensitivity to the Freedericksz characteristics. The presence of harvested single domain ferroelectric nanoparticles enables cells to be programmably semi-permanently polarized. This reduces or increases the Freedericksz transition threshold by 0.8 V, depending on the polarity of the applied voltage, giving a net 1.6 V Freedericksz threshold asymmetry for 8 mum thick cells filled with TL205 liquid crystal.

RESUMO

A new magnetic material with appreciable optical transmission in the visible region at room temperature has been isolated as a gamma-Fe(2)O(3)/polymer nanocomposite. The synthesis is carried out in an ion-exchange resin at 60 degrees C. Magnetization and susceptibility data demonstrate loading-dependent saturation moments as high as 46 electromagnetic units per gram and superparamagnetism for lower loadings where particle sizes are less than 100 angstroms. Optical absorption studies show that the small-particle form of gamma-Fe(2)O(3) is considerably more transparent to visible light than the single-crystal form. The difference in absorption ranges from nearly an order of magnitude in the "red" spectral region to a factor of 3 at 5400 angstroms. The magnetization of the nanocomposite is greater by more than an order of magnitude than those of the strongest room-temperature transparent magnets, FeBO(3) and FeF(3).

RESUMO

High-temperature, high-pressure extracts of soot produced by the Krätschmer-Huffman technique (KH carbon) were characterized by mass spectrometry and imaging with scanning tunneling microscopes (STMs). The mass spectra of these samples are similar to those of ambient-pressure, high-boiling-point solvent extractions, supporting the idea that solvent temperature and possibly pressure are key parameters in extraction of the giant fuilerenes. The STM images show that the giant fullerenes in these samples are roughly spherical in shape and range in diameter from approximately 1 to 2 nanometers, corresponding to fullerenes containing 60 to 330 atoms. No evidence of bucky tubes was found.
