INTRODUCTION: The sharpness of lateral peaks is a visually helpful clinical feature in high-speed videokymographic (VKG) images indicating vertical phase differences and mucosal waves on the vibrating vocal folds and giving insights into the health and pliability of vocal fold mucosa. This study aims at investigating parameters that can be helpful in objectively quantifying the lateral peak sharpness from the VKG images. METHOD: Forty-five clinical VKG images with different degrees of sharpness of lateral peaks were independently evaluated visually by three raters. The ratings were compared to parameters obtained by automatic image analysis of the vocal fold contours: Open Time Percentage Quotients (OTQ) and Plateau Quotients (PQ). The OTQ parameters were derived as fractions of the period during which the vocal fold displacement exceeds a predetermined percentage of the vibratory amplitude. The PQ parameters were derived similarly but as a fraction of the open phase instead of a period. RESULTS: The best correspondence between the visual ratings and the automatically derived quotients were found for the OTQ and PQ parameters derived at 95% and 80% of the amplitude, named OTQ95, PQ95, OTQ80 and PQ80. Their Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were in the range of 0.73 to 0.77 (P < 0.001) indicating strong relationships with the visual ratings. The strengths of these correlations were similar to those found from inter-rater comparisons of visual evaluations of peak sharpness. CONCLUSION: The Open time percentage and Plateau quotients at 95% and 80% of the amplitude stood out as the possible candidates for capturing the sharpness of the lateral peaks with their reliability comparable to that of visual ratings.

PURPOSE: Breast ultrasonography (US) presents an alternative to mammography in young asymptomatic individuals and a complementary examination in screening of women with dense breasts. Handheld US is the standard-of-care, yet when used in whole-breast examination, no effort has been devoted to monitoring breast coverage and missed regions, which is the purpose of this study. METHODS: We introduce a computer-aided system assisting radiologists and US technologists in covering the whole breast with minimum alteration to the standard workflow. The proposed system comprises a standard US device, proprietary electromagnetic 3D tracking technology and software that combines US visual and tracking data to estimate a probe trajectory, total time spent in different breast segments, and a map of missed regions. A case study, which involved four radiologists (two junior and two senior) performing whole-breast ultrasound in 75 asymptomatic patients, was conducted to test the importance and relevance of the system. RESULTS: The mean process time per breast was [Formula: see text], with no statistically significant difference between the left and the right sides, and slightly longer examination time of junior radiologists. The process time density shows that central parts of the breast have better coverage compared to the periphery. Within the central part, missed regions of minimum detectable size of [Formula: see text] occur in [Formula: see text] of examinations, and non-negligible [Formula: see text] regions occur in [Formula: see text] of cases. CONCLUSION: The results of the case study indicate that missed regions are present in handheld whole-breast US, which renders the proposed system for tracking the probe position during examination a valuable tool for monitoring coverage.

RESUMO

This paper introduces a set of methods for image and video forensic analysis. They were designed to help to assess image and video credibility and origin and to restore and increase image quality by diminishing unwanted blur, noise, and other possible artifacts. The motivation came from the best practices used in the criminal investigation utilizing images and/or videos. The determination of the image source, the verification of the image content, and image restoration were identified as the most important issues of which automation can facilitate criminalists work. Novel theoretical results complemented with existing approaches (LCD re-capture detection and denoising) were implemented in the PIZZARO software tool, which consists of the image processing functionality as well as of reporting and archiving functions to ensure the repeatability of image analysis procedures and thus fulfills formal aspects of the image/video analysis work. Comparison of new proposed methods with the state of the art approaches is shown. Real use cases are presented, which illustrate the functionality of the developed methods and demonstrate their applicability in different situations. The use cases as well as the method design were solved in tight cooperation of scientists from the Institute of Criminalistics, National Drug Headquarters of the Criminal Police and Investigation Service of the Police of the Czech Republic, and image processing experts from the Czech Academy of Sciences.

In this paper, we propose a new theory of invariants to Gaussian blur. We introduce a notion of a primordial image as a canonical form of all Gaussian blur-equivalent images. The primordial image is defined in spectral domain by means of projection operators. We prove that the moments of the primordial image are invariant to Gaussian blur and we derive recursive formulas for their direct computation without actually constructing the primordial image itself. We show how to extend their invariance also to image rotation. The application of these invariants is in blur-invariant image comparison and recognition. In the experimental part, we perform an exhaustive comparison with two main competitors: 1) the Zhang distance and 2) the local phase quantization.

In this paper we introduce a new theory of blur invariants. Blur invariants are image features which preserve their values if the image is convolved by a point-spread function (PSF) of a certain class. We present the invariants to convolution with an arbitrary N-fold symmetric PSF, both in Fourier and image domain. We introduce a notion of a primordial image as a canonical form of all blur-equivalent images. It is defined in spectral domain by means of projection operators. We prove that the moments of the primordial image are invariant to blur and we derive recursive formulae for their direct computation without actually constructing the primordial image. We further prove they form a complete set of invariants and show how to extent their invariance also to translation, rotation and scaling. We illustrate by simulated and real-data experiments their invariance and recognition power. Potential applications of this method are wherever one wants to recognize objects on blurred images.

In our paper, we present a performance evaluation of image segmentation algorithms on microscopic image data. In spite of the existence of many algorithms for image data partitioning, there is no universal and 'the best' method yet. Moreover, images of microscopic samples can be of various character and quality which can negatively influence the performance of image segmentation algorithms. Thus, the issue of selecting suitable method for a given set of image data is of big interest. We carried out a large number of experiments with a variety of segmentation methods to evaluate the behaviour of individual approaches on the testing set of microscopic images (cross-section images taken in three different modalities from the field of art restoration). The segmentation results were assessed by several indices used for measuring the output quality of image segmentation algorithms. In the end, the benefit of segmentation combination approach is studied and applicability of achieved results on another representatives of microscopic data category - biological samples - is shown.
