RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to establish a comprehensive set of recovery-oriented rehabilitation programs for individuals with schizophrenia, comparing the efficacy of video-based rehabilitation to traditional face-to-face interventions. The primary objective was to assess whether video-based rehabilitation could serve as a viable alternative for individuals with schizophrenia residing in remote areas. METHODS: A randomized controlled study was used to recruit 80 patients with schizophrenia in a stable post-hospitalization stage following discharge. Participants were categorized into three groups: 24 in the control group, 21 in the face-to-face group, and 35 in the remote group. Assessment parameters included psychiatric symptoms, social skills, family function and self-stigma. RESULTS: A total of 68 participants completed the program. The findings indicated significant differences (p < .05) between the control group and intervention group, particularly in the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Personal and Social Performance Scale (PSP). CONCLUSIONS: The rehabilitation program, tailored for patients in the early phase of the schizophrenia spectrum, demonstrates both effectiveness and feasibility in enhancing clinical symptoms and social functions. Notably, interventions conducted via video proved to be equally effective as those administered face-to-face.

RESUMO

Introduction: Stressful global situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a tremendous impact on mental health in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. The mediating roles of psychological impact related to COVID-19, sleep quality, and psychological distress were investigated in the association between childhood trauma and suicidal risk in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data of 147 patients with schizophrenia and 189 healthy controls (HCs). Results: Histories of childhood trauma and schizophrenia were good predictors of COVID-19-related psychological impact, global sleep quality, and psychological distress. Moreover, the series mediation model showed that the effect of childhood trauma on suicidal risk in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia was totally sequential mediated by the psychological impact of COVID-19, sleep quality, and psychological distress. Conclusion: Clinicians need to recognize the increased suicidal risk associated with COVID-19-related psychological distress in schizophrenia patients with a history of childhood trauma.

RESUMO

This study aimed to examine associations between urinary metal concentrations and sperm DNA damage. Thirteen metals [arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn)] were detected in urine samples of 207 infertile men from an infertility clinic using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and also, sperm DNA damage (tail length, percent DNA tail, and tail distributed moment) were assessed using neutral comet assay. We found that urinary Hg and Ni were associated with increasing trends for tail length (both p for trend<0.05), and that urinary Mn was associated with increasing trend for tail distributed moment (p for trend=0.02). These associations did persist even when considering multiple metals. Our results suggest that environmental exposure to Hg, Mn, and Ni may be associated with increased sperm DNA damage.
