RESUMO

Dealing with painful suffering is discussed in a passage featuring an interchange between several rabbis in the Babylonian Talmud. As part of that discussion someone says, "Give me your hand." Who speaks that phrase, and what is the purpose behind this request? What practical lessons can this passage teach us today? The explanations offered here propose an alternative understanding to the conventional explanation of who initiates the action. I suggest that it is the sufferer who speaks, thereby achieving self-empowerment.

RESUMO

Describing the terms of "shaming, blaming, naming, claiming, and reframing" as the possible changing dynamics in some human relationships to achieve a resolution, is a fairly recent insight. Through analyzing a short section of an ancient text, Biblical Antiquities, we show how those matters, although not named as dynamics, were recognized as stages in human interactions millennia ago. They were played out in the announcement and subsequent birth of the biblical judge Samson.

RESUMO

Development of a pseudoaneurysm of the ascending aorta is an uncommon complication of aortic surgery. Several nonsurgical techniques are available for treatment of ascending aortic pseudoaneurysms (AAPs). This report outlines a single-center retrospective experience with 14 nonsurgical procedures for treatment of AAPs in 10 patients. Modified stent grafts, septal defect occlusion devices, coil embolics, and liquid embolics were deployed by transthoracic and endovascular approaches. Complete stasis of the AAP was achieved in 7 of 10 patients (70%). Mean postprocedural recoveries occurred within 3.5 days. Nonsurgical techniques for repair of AAPs offer a comparatively safe and effective alternative to open surgical repair.

RESUMO

Genetic studies indicate that protein homeostasis is a major contributor to metazoan longevity. Collapse of protein homeostasis results in protein misfolding cascades and the accumulation of insoluble protein fibrils and aggregates, such as amyloids. A group of small molecules, traditionally used in histopathology to stain amyloid in tissues, bind protein fibrils and slow aggregation in vitro and in cell culture. We proposed that treating animals with such compounds would promote protein homeostasis in vivo and increase longevity. Here we show that exposure of adult Caenorhabditis elegans to the amyloid-binding dye Thioflavin T (ThT) resulted in a profoundly extended lifespan and slowed ageing. ThT also suppressed pathological features of mutant metastable proteins and human ß-amyloid-associated toxicity. These beneficial effects of ThT depend on the protein homeostasis network regulator heat shock factor 1 (HSF-1), the stress resistance and longevity transcription factor SKN-1, molecular chaperones, autophagy and proteosomal functions. Our results demonstrate that pharmacological maintenance of the protein homeostatic network has a profound impact on ageing rates, prompting the development of novel therapeutic interventions against ageing and age-related diseases.

RESUMO

The author offers an informal report on a project that has produced positive results, albeit not with the usual supportive numerical data that might be found in a typical research-oriented format. Stories rather than statistics provide the relevant information.

RESUMO

Compassion Fatigue, Compassion Satisfaction, and Burnout were studied in a convenience sample of 66 male and female Rabbis who work as chaplains and attended the annual conference of the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) in 2002. Although Compassion Fatigue and Burnout were low among the survey participants, both measures were significantly higher among the women in the sample. Compassion Fatigue was also higher among chaplains who were divorced, and it increased with the number of hours per week the chaplains spent working with trauma victims or their families (r = .25, p<.05). Hierarchical multiple regression was performed to determine the influence of six professional and five personal variables on each of the three dependent variables. Four professional variables accounted for 19.5% of the variation and three personal variables accounted for 20.3% of the variation in Compassion Fatigue. Attempts to predict Burnout and Compassion Satisfaction were far less successful. Burnout was predicted by only two variables (i.e. age and years as a Rabbi), which accounted for just 18.4% of the variance in Burnout scores. Age was the only variable found to have a significant effect on Compassion Satisfaction, and its effect was positive. The implications of the findings are discussed.

RESUMO

A rabbi/chaplain listens to a 21st century woman tell about some complexities encountered in the blended family dynamics. He reminds her that such stressful phenomena are not as new as many believe, illustrating his point by interpreting the biblical account of Sarah and Hagar, noting particularly that some of the same decisions and actions taken in ancient times may still provide authentic insights to current family dynamics today.
