Voices provide a rich source of information that is important for identifying individuals and for social interaction. During search for a face in a crowd, voices often accompany visual information, and they facilitate localization of the sought-after individual. However, it is unclear whether this facilitation occurs primarily because the voice cues the location of the face or because it also increases the salience of the associated face. Here we demonstrate that a voice that provides no location information nonetheless facilitates visual search for an associated face. We trained novel face-voice associations and verified learning using a two-alternative forced choice task in which participants had to correctly match a presented voice to the associated face. Following training, participants searched for a previously learned target face among other faces while hearing one of the following sounds (localized at the center of the display): a congruent learned voice, an incongruent but familiar voice, an unlearned and unfamiliar voice, or a time-reversed voice. Only the congruent learned voice speeded visual search for the associated face. This result suggests that voices facilitate the visual detection of associated faces, potentially by increasing their visual salience, and that the underlying crossmodal associations can be established through brief training.

The mechanism of vesication from sulfur mustard remains unknown in spite of 80 years of investigation. We recently reported sulfur mustard-related inhibition of one or more protein (serine/threonine) phosphatases in tissue cytosol in vitro, suggesting a mechanism common to other vesicants such as cantharidin and Lewisite. Our investigation showed that this inhibition was related to the concentration of 2,2'-thiobis-ethanol (thiodiglycol), the hydrolysis product of sulfur mustard, rather than to the concentration of mustard itself. Related work showed an increase in the rate of NAD (but not NADP) reduction upon the addition of thiodiglycol to mouse liver cytosol. This result provided evidence that metabolism beyond thiodiglycol may be contributing to protein phosphatase inhibition. This observation indicated that metabolism involving one or more dehydrogenases may be necessary to produce the ultimate inhibitor of the protein phosphatases. We report here that thiodiglycol is a substrate for horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (Km = 3.68+/-0.45 mM and Vmax = 0.22 +/-0.01 micromol min(-1) mg protein(-1)) and for pyridine nucleotide-linked enzymes in mouse liver and human skin cytosol. The alcohol dehydrogenase-specific inhibitor 4-methylpyrazole inhibited the oxidation of thiodiglycol by the pure horse liver enzyme as well as by the enzymes in human skin and mouse liver cytosol, indicating that the activity in the tissue preparations is also alcohol dehydrogenase.

Resting immune [WBC and differential cell counts lymphocyte phenotyping (CD2, CD4, CD8, CD16, CD20, and CD56), and NK activity] and endocrine (cortisol, prolactin, growth hormone, and DHEA-SO4) parameters were measured in 10 male, Vietnam combat veterans diagnosed with long-term post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 9 control Vietnam combat veterans without a PTSD diagnosis but with a comparable history of alcohol abuse. Subjects completed a battery of psychological questionnaires. We report on preliminary observations of the relationship between PTSD and physiological and psychological parameters. With some important exceptions, PTSD patients did not differ from the age-matched control group with regard to hormone levels or lymphocyte phenotypes. However, NK activity was higher in the PTSD population than in the controls. Beck, Mississippi, and Combat Exposure scores were significantly elevated in the PTSD population. In contrast to previous observations in depressed populations, depression (indicated by elevated Beck scores), comorbid with PTSD, was associated with increased natural cytotoxicity.
