Cancer patients with oral mucositis: challenges for nursing care.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze nursing care provided to cancer patients with oral mucositis based on the Nursing Process (NP). METHOD: this exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study was conducted with 213 patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy in two cancer facilities: one philanthropic and one private service. RESULTS: the participants were mainly female, aged 45.8 years old on average, with up to 11 years of schooling and income of up to one times the minimum wage. Severe mucositis was related to chemotherapy associated with radiotherapy. Only 25.3% of the patients reported having received guidance from nurses during their treatment concerning self-care. The perceptions of patients regarding quality of care did not significantly differ between the private and public facilities. The basic human needs mainly affected were comfort, eating, and hygiene. Based on this finding, one NP was established listing the diagnoses, interventions and expected results to establish an ideal, though individualized, standard of nursing care to be provided to these patients. CONCLUSION: to understand oral mucositis is crucial to establish nursing care that includes prevention based on the implementation of an oral care plan.

Adherence to foot self-care in diabetes mellitus patients.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the self-care of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Family Health Strategy in Teresina-PI. METHOD: Search cross selected by simple random sampling, 331 people with diabetes mellitus. Data collection took place from August to December 2012 with the use of Self-Care Activities Questionnaire with Diabetes and structured instrument for recording information socioeconomic and guidance received by the professional nurse. RESULTS: The data revealed that patients have poor adherence to blood glucose monitoring, the physical exercise and foot care, but with good adherence to the medication. Only 38.7% of the sample examined the feet of fi ve to seven days a week. Statistically significant association between self-care activities with their feet and orientations of nurses (p < 0,05). CONCLUSION: That there is need to raise awareness with regard to the development of skills for self-care.

Aplicação da teoria interpessoal de Peplau com puérpara adolescente / Aplicación de la teoría interpersonal de Peplau con puérpara adolescente

Objetivo: estabelecer uma relação de ajuda entre enfermeiro e puérpara adolescente primípara, fundamentada na teoria do Relacionamento Interpessoal de Peplau, em que se utilizou a taxionomia de diagnósticos de enfermagem da North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) para vislumbrar as respostas da paciente frente à situação de saúde que vivenciava.Materiais e Métodos: O estudo se desenvolveu nos meses de novembro e dezembro de 2004 com uma puérpara adolescente e teve como cenários uma unidade de alojamento conjunto de uma maternidade pública e o domicilio de uma puérpara. Realizou-se uma visita à instituição hospitalar e três visitas domiciliares. Resultado e conclusão: Durante essas visitas utilizou-se o processo interpessoal proposto pela teorista, as técnicas de observação e entrevista. A realização deste estudo proporcionou conhecer os propósitos da teoria, que sistematizou e orientou a prestação de cuidados à adolescente.
