RESUMO

White mold is a disease caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a highly destructive necrotrophic pathogen that infects soybean crops, among others. Usually, the infection triggers the plant defense system to minimize the damages. However, the effects of the infection on soybean plant metabolism are still unclear. In this work, the metabolic profiles of soybean stems and leaves were accessed using 1H HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy to identify metabolic changes as a response to S. sclerotiorum infection. This fungus widely affects the central metabolism of soybean plants, and most of the altered metabolites are involved in carbon metabolism, as suggested by the results. Furthermore, the metabolites of central metabolism can be associated with the production of several polyphenolic metabolites. Changes in metabolic profile of leaves indicate systemic effects.

RESUMO

This study reports the chemical composition of five types of industrial frozen fruit pulps (acerola, cashew, grape, passion fruit and pineapple fruit pulps) and compares them with homemade pulps at two different stages of ripening. The fruit pulps were characterized by analyzing their metabolic profiles and determining their ethanol content using quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (qNMR). In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to extract more information from the NMR data. We detected ethanol in all industrial and homemade pulps; and acetic acid in cashew, grape and passion fruit industrial and homemade pulps. The ethanol content in some industrial pulps is above the level recommended by regulatory agencies and is near the levels of some post-ripened homemade pulps. This study demonstrates that qNMR can be used to rapidly detect ethanol content in frozen fruit pulps and food derivatives. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

RESUMO

This is a series of three manuscripts about the genus Ablabesmyia. In the first new species are described, three species are re-examined and keys to males, pupae and larvae of known neotropical species are provided and an emended generic diagnosis of Ablabesmyia is given. The second manuscript will analyze the molecular data of Neotropical species and the third one will check, through a phylogenetic analysis, the truth of subgenera. In this study, twenty-four new species of Ablabesmyia Johannsen are described and figured: A. arquata, A. cauame, A. commata, A. communiba, A. cordeiroi, A, depaulai, A. diversa, A. ducke, A. fazzari, A. fusariae, A. gessnerae, A. gigas, A. jaquirana, A. laurindoi, A. manauara, A. martha, A. novema, A. parannulata, A. parareissi, A. pinhoi, A. rafaeli, A. separata, A. strixinoae and A. suiamissu. We re-examined A. cinctipes (Johannsen), A. infumata (Edwards) and A. metica Roback. The species were collected in Brazil, in lentic systems. Keys to males, pupae and larvae of known neotropical species of the genus Ablabesmyia are provided and an emended generic diagnosis of Ablabesmyia is given.

RESUMO

A new genus of non-biting midges, Tapajos gen. n., is erected for T cristinae sp. n. from the Neotropical region, and placed in the subfamily Chironominae, tribe Chironomini. Adult males are characterized by the combination of bare eyes; antenna with 11 flagellomeres; antepronotal lobes fused medially; fore tibia with inner scale broad and rounded; superior volsella with a long sickle shaped, bare part arising from the distal lateral corner of a globose, densely trichiose base; inferior volsella sub-cylindrical, surpassing the anal point, distally setose and slightly expanded.

RESUMO

One new species of Thalassomya Schiner, 1856 (Diptera: Chironomidae: Telmatogetoninae), T. gutae sp. n. is described and figured as male, pupa and larva. The specimen was collected in the marine zone between tidemarks, in southeastern Brazilian coast and is the first species of this genus recorded to Brazil.

RESUMO

The implementation and strengthening of initiatives on physical activity and health are needed to guide and propose body practice in a conscious and autonomous way. Given the relevance of the investigation of places to the practice of physical activity in the development of public policies and practices of intervention, it is necessary knowledge about where and how this activity is developed, and the characteristics of the people interested. The objective of this study was characterize practitioners of physical activity in the Campus of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS); identifying ways and reasons that led these people to seek for that space and the importance of vocational guidance for the practice. Data was collected by observation and interview with 75 people in November 2006. The results indicated that most were men, adults, practiced mostly to walk without professional guidance. It is hoped that studies is encouraging the development of projects in recognition of where and how physical activity is developed and characteristics of who the search. This information can collaborate to interpretations based, interventions and initiatives in public policy, as they may drive development of programs to encourage physical activity, such as municipal Atlas of Sports, in operation.
