RESUMO

The Curtobacterium genus is a member of the family Microbacteriaceae, and Curtobacterium species are recognized as plant pathogens. The aim of this study was to investigate a dubious result of species identification for an infection located on a catheter tip of a patient with Covid-19. A strain isolated from a catheter tip sample, identified by VITEK® 2 as Cronobacter spp., was submitted to polyphasic analysis: Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) using VITEK® MS, real-time polymerase chain reaction targeting dnaG gene, and 16S rRNA full gene Sanger sequencing analysis for confirmation. The strain presented negative result using qPCR and could not identified by MALDI-TOF MS. 16S rRNA full gene Sanger sequencing analysis identified the strain as Curtobacterium spp. The Gram-variable characteristic (Gram-negative instead of Gram-positive) of the isolated strain was the responsible for the misidentification by VITEK® 2 and VITEK® MS did not identify the strain. 16S rRNA full gene sequencing analysis identified the strain as Curtobacterium genus, but other complementary techniques are necessary to identify at species level.

RESUMO

Brain damage from neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) plays a major role in neonatal mortality and morbidity. Using the Rice-Vannucci model of HI in rats, we verified that 8 days after HI injury, adenosine deaminase (ADA), N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities increased in the left hemisphere hippocampus (HI group); however, the activity of 5'-nucleotidase (5'NT) remained unchanged. In the hematoxylin-eosin analysis (HE), we detected selective and delayed degeneration of hippocampal pyramidal neurons and astroglial reaction accompanied by glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive and vimentin-positive in the immunohistochemistry analysis in the HI group compared with the control group. We observed the selective necrosis of neurons, vascular endothelial proliferation and inflammatory response accompanied by the increase of the key enzyme of adenosine metabolism in the HI group. The increase of ADA activity, despite the 5'NT activity was not altered, indicates the predominance of ADA activity in the postischemic homeostasis of extra cellular adenosine. The presence of leukocytes into the ischemic areas displays the possible importance of the neutrophil-macrophages associated with the increase of MPO and NAG activities 8 days after HI. These findings may contribute to the evaluation of some consequences of the damage caused by neonatal HI.

RESUMO

In Brazil, the radionuclides used for therapy are: (131)I, (153)Sm, (90)Y and (177)Lu, both for routine or research protocols. The radionuclide activity excreted by patients may be quantified by bioassay analysis and constitutes a powerful tool for individual treatment planning. The Bioassay Laboratory (LBIOVT) of the Institute of Radiation Protection and Dosimetry (IRD) has equipments for gamma and beta spectroscopy. These systems are calibrated in energy and efficiency using reference sources supplied by the National Laboratory of Radiation Metrology (LMNRI/IRD). The LBIOVT has operational procedures according ISO-ABNT-17025 recommendations and participates of international and national intercomparisons. The patient samples are collected immediately after radiopharmaceutical administrations, at the hospital or at the patient residence, and are handled, stored and transported according national radiation protection regulations. The radionuclide specific activity (Bq/L) is referenced to date and time of excretion, for the estimation of the individual biological half-live. The volume of excreta may carefully manipulated in order to avoid losses and misinterpretation in the activity quantification. The process of the LBIOVT accreditation and its participation in intercomparisons may guarantee the confidence of the results, allowing the minimization of the uncertainties in the individual monitoring.

RESUMO

The aim of the present work is to propose a protocol for quantification of (18)F-FDG activities at organ level through whole body exams with Positron Emission Tomography. They were selected patients with normal uptake or a single tumor. In the period 2004-2005, 745 patients were studied. Among then, it was selected 97 adults for the normal uptake control group. The main studies were: intestine; colon, rectum, lung, lymphoma and melanoma, liver, esophagus, gonads and breasts. For "prospective screening", it were selected 20 patients with the identical physical characteristics of the control group. For internal dosimetry, the main organs should be elected according the kinetics of (18)F-FDG, either considering normal uptake or pathologies. Absorbed doses due to Computed Tomography and F-FDG uptake were estimated. Comparisons between internal and external exposures, for the same organ, point out higher doses due to external irradiation, except for bladder and kidneys. For individual dose estimation, parameters such the effective half-life should be known and this information may be achieved by an adaptation of the routine protocol.

RESUMO

A cross-sectional study on HIV/AIDS was carried out in 108 outpatients from the university hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande, Brazil, from July to December 2008, to investigate latent tuberculosis infection using the tuberculin skin test (TST). The prevalence of positive results was 13.9 percent. The CD4+ T cell count (p = 0.091) and the diagnosis time (p = 0.010) were statistically significant when compared with TST positivity. In the cohort of HIV/AIDS patients who had latent tuberculosis infection, the median diagnosis time was eight years. Undetectable viral load presented significant association (p = 0.046) with tuberculosis infection. The fact that numerous individuals with HIV/AIDS infection presented a negative reaction to the tuberculin skin test is probably related to alterations in the cellular immune response induced by HIV infection. The tuberculin test is a useful tool for the detection of latent tuberculosis infection and should be performed in all HIV/AIDS individuals at the time of the diagnosis and on a yearly basis, if negative. Both the early identification of the tuberculosis infection by the tuberculin skin test at the moment of immunological restoration and chemoprophylaxis in infected individuals are mechanisms to control HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis coinfection.

RESUMO

The prevalence of congenital cardiac disease in cats varies from 0.2 to 1 per cent, with males being more affected than females. This is probably an underestimate due to the fact that not all affected kittens are presented. Discordant atrioventricular connection (where the morphological right atrium connects to the morphological left ventricle, and the morphological left atrium connects to the morphological right ventricle) is an uncommon condition in humans and, to the authors' knowledge, has not to date been described in animals. The association between this anomaly and the double-outlet right ventricle (where both great arteries arise entirely or partially from the morphological right ventricle) is extremely rare in children. This report describes a case of a cat which presented with this association of cardiac defects.

RESUMO

Five patients with atopic dermatitis, three males and two females, aged 2 to 17 years, had positive reactions to air allergens (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and/or farinae). All the patients suffered from severe recurrent dermatophytosis that responded poorly to antifungal treatment. The results of immunologic evaluation by laboratory tests were normal, except for a decrease in the ingestion phase by mononuclear phagocytes. After diagnosis of immunodeficiency, ketoconazole shampoo was used prophylactically and at the very first signs of recurrence of dermatophytosis, systemic antifungal treatment was started, without concurrent use of macrolides and with monitoring of hepatic function. The fungal infections responded well to this treatment and the patients' quality of life markedly improved.

RESUMO

There are very few reports on the microbiota of the digestive tract of sand flies, an important omission considering that blood is not the only meal ingested. Male and female sand flies obtain sugar meals from several sources, thereby increasing their chance of infection with microorganisms. Chances of contamination are higher when insects are bred in the laboratory, and this may affect the development of Leishmania spp. From the digestive tract of 300 sand fly females separated in two groups we isolated 10 species of bacteria in group 1 and 8 species in group 2. In group 1, Enterobacteriaceae of the following genera were identified: Serratia, Enterobacter, and Yokenella and the non-fermenters: Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Stenotrophomonas. In group 2, the Enterobacteriaceae Enterobacter and Serratia were identified as well as the non-fermenters Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Burkolderia, and Pseudomonas.

RESUMO

The sexual version of the Penna model of biological aging, simulated since 1996, is compared here with alternative forms of reproduction as well as with models not involving aging. In particular we want to check how sexual forms of life could have evolved and won over earlier asexual forms hundreds of million years ago. This computer model is based on the mutation-accumulation theory of aging, using bits-strings to represent the genome. Its population dynamics is studied by Monte Carlo methods.

RESUMO

This study deals with the review of the literature regarding the indirect blood pressure measurement in normal pregnant women. It shows the changes that happened with the blood pressure due to pregnancy. Polemical aspects in the procedure of blood pressure measurement are discussed; for example, which one of the Korotkoff phases (4 or 5) that better represent the diastolic blood pressure and the use of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring in pregnancy. The recommendations from different societies are emphasized (American Heart Association, British Hypertension Society, Australasian Society, National High Blood Pressure Education Program and World Health Organization).

RESUMO

Endocardial fibroelastosis is an uncommon congenital heart disease in dogs that may be manifested by signs of left-sided congestive heart failure. A three-month-old, male, Fila Brasileiro dog developed signs of generalised heart failure. Physical examination revealed normal temperature, ascites, and pale and cyanotic mucous membranes. The pup died just after radiography which revealed ascites, hepatomegaly, severe cardiac enlargement and pulmonary oedema. At necropsy, serosanguineous fluid in the thorax and abdomen, pulmonary oedema, right ventricular dilatation, hypertrophy and dilatation of the left ventricle, and mitral valve incompetence were observed. The histopathological examination demonstrated that the thickening of the endocardium of the left atrium and left ventricle was due to the presence of elastic and collagen fibres, although there were no signs of an inflammatory process.

RESUMO

The hypertensive disorder of pregnancy is one of the most important complications of the pregnant cycle, presenting high risk of morbidity and mortality to the mother and the child. The marks of the systorical blood pressure and diastorical blood pressure are the parameters to diagnose the hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. Then, the precise measure of the blood pressure is an essential condition for the clinical evaluation of the pregnant woman during the antepartum course, in order to diagnose in advance, the hypertensive disorder of this period, since the raising in the blood pressure is normally the first clinical sign of the sickness (National High Blood Pressures Educational Program, 1990). The interest in the evolution of the blood pressure during the pregnancy is very old, since 1884, when Schedoff and Porockjakoff pointed out the attention to the association of the raising in the blood pressure with eclampsia (HENRY, 1936). Since then, many studies about the modification of the blood pressure caused by the pregnancy have been published, in order to recognize pathological diversions that characterize the hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. Although, the researchers are trying to identify an exact limit of the normal blood pressure during the pregnancy, there is a gap in the adaptation of the cuff to the circumference of the arm. In spite of the recommendation by the American Heart Association in 1951, which says that the width of the cuff should be 20% bigger than the diameter of the arm, no comparative study about the marks of the blood pressure during the pregnancy taken with a cuff of correct width and with a cuff of standard width, was found in the specific literature. (BORDLEY III et al., 1951) Comparing the indirect measure of the blood pressure taken with a cuff of correct width and taken with a cuff of standard width, ARCURI (1985) observed in 404 normotensive and not pregnant women between 17 and 59 years old underestimation of the blood pressure, especially in those women with thin arm. The co-relation is opposite to the circumference of the arm, what means that the smaller is the circumference the higher is the underestimation. Considering there is an underestimation of the levels of the blood pressure, when the large cuffs are used, it is called into question the jeopardy of the early diagnosis of high blood pressure of thin pregnant women. Based on the consideration presented, this study has the aim of evaluating the measurement of the blood pressure on pregnant women by using cuffs adequate to the circumference of the arm. The population of this study will be healthy pregnant women, with one alive fetus, registered in the antepartum course service of a maternity and of a community center in São Paulo city.

RESUMO

Four hundred and five water closets were investigated: 11 located at public squares, 2 at the railroad station, 4 at the bus station, 55 at bars and restaurants, 146 at state schools, 116 at municipal schools, 8 at private schools, 36 at public health centers, 16 at sports centers, 8 at orphanages and 3 at shopping malls. Microscopy slides with adhesive tape were used. The material was obtained by sticking the tape onto the following elements: 4 spots on the toilet seat, internal and external door knobs, latch, faucet handle and discharge valve (push button or pulling string). Out of the 405 water closets studied, 22 (5.43%) were contaminated. Eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostomatidae, Enterobius vermiculares, Taenia sp and Hymenolepis nana were found. In 2 water closets eggs of 2 parasites were found simultaneously.

RESUMO

The evidence of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis transmission in the non-forest environment in the Ribeira Valley region, São Paulo, Brazil, has made this epidemiologic four years' study possible, viewing the enzootic activity of L. (V.) braziliensis. Furthermore, the natural infection in small mammals and the domestic dog population has been completed in collecting of phlebotomine sandflies in the forest and peridomiciliar environments. Positive test-results have only been found in resident dogs (Canis familiaris) with a rate of 5.6 and 2.4% for serological and parasitological test respectively. Among silvatic and synanthropic rodents collected, Oryzomys (Olygoryzomys) and Rattus rattus are pre-eminent having both been collected in equal proportions, in peridomiciliar environment. The sandfly Lutzomyia intermedia has contributed only with 166 feminine specimens due to insecticide (DDT) application on and in the human and domestic habitations. From the general epidemiologic standpoint the fragile L. (V.) braziliensis cycle in the unforested areas as well as the canine and small mammals roles as a domiciliar infection source are discussed, and their potencial in the dispersion of this parasite in the researched area is analysed too.
