RESUMO

The objective of the present study is to investigate the perspective of mothers regarding the care given by academics of nursing to their newborn in a neonatal intensive therapy unit. This is a qualitative research based on a phenomenological approach which has as its philosophical framework the thought of Martin Heidegger expressed in his book Being and Time. The data used in the investigation were interviews given by ten mothers who had their newborns in a neonatal intensive therapy unit of a university hospital in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The interpretation of the data collected revealed that mothers viewed the nursing academics as solicitous beings regarding the care given to their newborns. They also acknowledged that these students were engaged in the assistance given and concerned with what was being done and to whom it was being done.

RESUMO

The child with a chance of dying faces death in a very peculiar way, because the hope that he or she managed to keep up to this moment changes with the impact of reality reactivating the first feelings of despair and pain for the separation of the loved ones. The main goal of this study is the attendance of a child in a terminal face, using as a path the phenomenological reference. Twelve attendances have been done with children in terminal faces, where they were able to express significant situations of their living process, and reveal with great intensity many fears, like the ones of dying, of being lonely, of leaving the ones they love, among others. Before this we see the necessity of worrying with matters interrelated to the feelings and emotions of these children who walk towards death, taking into consideration the possible means of help.

RESUMO

The present study aimed understanding some aspects of the experience of a nursing team that take care of children with cancer in night shifts. Therefore, the author used a qualitative methodology--phenomenological method--that enabled her to analyse the declarations of the nursing team about their experience. The convergences of their speech were analysed and some units of meaning were identified in order to contribute to institutionally assure the necessary work conditions to the nursing personnel as well as to prepare the team to face these circumstances.

RESUMO

Estrous behavior and the estrus-to-ovulation interval are essential for estimating the best time to artificially inseminate cattle. Because these parameters are not well characterized in the Nelore breed (Bos indicus), the main purpose of the this study was to determine the estrus-to-ovulation interval in Nelore heifers and cows with natural estrus or with estrus induced by treatments with PGF2 alpha or norgestomet and estradiol valerate (NEV). The cows and heifers were observed continuously (24 h a day) to determine the onset of estrus and to study estrous behavior in the cows. Ten hours after the start of estrus the ovaries were scanned every 2 h by ultrasonography to monitor the dominant follicle until ovulation. Blood samples were collected periodically to determine progesterone levels by RIA. Administration of PGF2 alpha (2 injections, 11 days apart) did not induce estrus in most Nelore females in spite of the presence of functional CL, indicated by progesterone concentrations above 6.0 ng/ml in 25 of 28 animals. Treatment with NEV induced high sexual receptivity in cows (10/11), but only 66% ovulated. Cows with natural or induced estrus exhibited behavioral estrus of 10.9 +/- 1.4 h, and ovulation occurred 26.6 +/- 0.44 h (n = 26) after the onset of estrus. In most of the cows (53.8%) estrus began at night (between 1801 and 600 h), and 34.6% it started and finished during the night. It is concluded that in Nelore females ovulation occurs approximately 26 h after the onset of estrus. Additionally, estrous behavior is shorter than in European breeds, and there is a high incidence of estrus at night, which makes it difficult to detect and, consequently, impairs Al in Nelore cattle. The observation that a high percentage of Nelore females with an active CL did not respond to usual dosages of PGF2 alpha warrants further investigation.

RESUMO

Luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were measured in suckled beef cows treated during the postpartum period with prostaglandin F2 alpha (5 mg Alfaprostol; PGF2 alpha) and then gonadotropin releasing hormone (100 micrograms Cystorelin 30 h after PGF2 alpha; GnRH). The objective was to determine if PGF2 alpha would cause a release of LH in the absence of progesterone and affect the GnRH-induced LH release and ovulation (Experiment 1). LH concentrations increased (P < 0.05) after PGF2 alpha treatment in both anestrous and cyclic cows but to a greater extent (P < 0.05) in anestrous cows. The GnRH-induced LH release and ovulation response in previously anestrous cows were greater (P < 0.05) when PGF2 alpha was administered 30 h earlier. In Experiment 2, 49 beef cows received PGF2 alpha (5 mg Alfaprostol) and GnRH (100 micrograms Cystorelin) 30 h later to determine if the profile of the preovulatory LH surge was associated with the occurrence of subnormal luteal phases in postpartum beef cows suckling calves. Cows that had normal luteal phases had a greater (P < 0.05) mean area under the GnRH-induced LH response curve and a greater (P < 0.05) mean GnRH-induced LH peak amplitude than cows that had subnormal luteal phases. In summary, results suggest that PGF2 alpha may exert a fertility effect by causing a LH release independent of progesterone withdrawal; administration of PGF2 alpha 30 h before GnRH elevated the GnRH-induced LH release and ovulation response. In addition, cows with subnormal luteal phases had GnRH-induced LH surges of less area and peak amplitude than cows with normal luteal phases.

RESUMO

Through comprehensive analysis, the authors reflect about the emergence of family thematic in the speeches of the individuals denominate schizophrenics who are out of crisis. Using phenomenology as a methodological way, the study intends to show how these subjects focuse the family in their talk.

RESUMO

The study approaches the requirement to professional nurses to understand the child as a developing person. In order to have this comprehension, the child aggressive behavior was approached according to some theories of development that allowed us a new perspective of action in the relationship with the child.

RESUMO

The necessity of educating the Health Professionals to the theme Death is concerned has become so evident during our educational activities that we have striven for the construction of a knowledge body about death and dying. Therefore, the knowledge we have generating refers to the pedagogical aspect of the theme. The aim of this study was to focus such dimension as far as it describes and analyses our experience in educating nursing undergraduates to deal with situations involving death and dying. In particular, we try to developing our students in order to be able to provide care to the dead body in a proposal to transcend the technical aspect of this care. Bearing this educational purpose, we strive for a space that makes possible a formation in the perspective of leading the students to another existencial dimension when facing and understanding death.
