Introduction: This case report presents the intentional periodontal maintenance of two periodontal hopeless lower central incisors with a multidisciplinary approach and 20-year follow-up. Case presentation: A 36-year-old male, in 2001, was diagnosed with aggressive periodontitis, gingival swelling, bleeding, and mandibular central incisors with mobility and poor prognosis. Following periodontal therapy (phase I), root canal treatment, and occlusal adjustment, #31 and #41 were gently extracted to remove the granulation tissues, calculus, and infected cementum from the root surface. Then, tetracycline-HCl was applied for 5 minutes on the root surfaces. The teeth were repositioned into the sockets and splinted with a lingual bar. At 3 months, the bar was removed, and a free gingival autogenous graft was done to improve the local keratinized tissue width. Mobility scores, pocket depths, and clinical attachment levels were recorded, and radiographs were taken at 1, 5, and 20 years. The 5-year follow-up showed that the teeth were clinically and radiographically in function. There was a reduction in probing depth and a gain in clinical attachment and radiographic alveolar bone levels. After 20 years, #41 was stable, but #31 had external root resorption, leading to a new treatment plan (dental implants) and extraction. Conclusion: The clinical result of this case was satisfactory for 20 years. Intentional periodontal maintenance of the teeth may be an alternative treatment, even considering the high level of complexity.

The indiscriminate use of pesticides in agriculture demands the development of devices capable of monitoring contaminations in food supplies, in the environment and biological fluids. Simplicity, easy handling, high sensitivities, and low limits-of-detection (LOD) and quantification are some of the required properties for these devices. In this work, we evaluated the effect of incorporating gold nanoparticles into indigo carmine-doped polypyrrole during the electropolymerization of films for use as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme-based biosensor. As proof of concept, the pesticide methyl parathion was tested towards the inhibition of AChE. The enzyme was immobilized simply by drop-casting a solution, eliminating the need for any prior surface modification. The biosensors were characterized with cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The assays for the detection of methyl parathion with films containing polypyrrole, indigo carmine and AChE (PPy-IC-AChE) presented a sensitivity of 5.7 µA cm-2 g-1 mL and a LOD of 12 nmol L-1 (3.0 ng L-1) with a linear range from 1.3 x 10-7 mol L-1 to 1.0 x 10-5 mol L-1. The introduction of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) into the film (PPy-IC-AuNP-AChE) led to remarkable improvements on the overall performance, such as a lower redox potential for the enzymatic reaction, a 145 % increase in sensitivity (14 µA cm-2 g-1 mL), a wider detection dynamic range (from 1.3x10-7 to 1.0x10-3 mol L-1), and a very low LOD of 24 fmol L-1 (64 ag mL-1). These findings underscore the potential of using AuNPs to improve the enzymatic performance of biosensor devices.

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to assess grating visual acuity and functional vision in children with congenital Zika syndrome. Methods: Initial and final grating visual acuity was measured using Teller acuity cards. Cerebral vision impairment standardized tests were used to assess functional vision. Patients were referred to the early visual intervention program for visually disabled children. Neuroimaging was performed. Results: In this study, 10 children were included with an age range of 1-37 months. Eight patients presented with macular atrophic scars. Neuroimaging revealed microcephaly and cerebral abnormalities in all patients. Low vision and cerebral vision impairment characteristics were observed in all children. The final grating visual acuity in this group varied from 3.00 to 0.81 logMAR. Conclusions: The grating visual acuity test revealed low vision in all children with congenital Zika syndrome. Functional vision evaluation revealed cerebral vision impairment characteristics in all patients, who were referred to the early visual intervention program. Visual acuity improved in six children.

ABSTRACT Optic neuritis is an important cause of unilateral and acute visual loss in young adults, but other differential diagnoses should be considered, especially when the disease has an atypical presentation. This report presents the case of a young woman with reduced visual acuity in her right eye, associated with optic disc edema and a relative afferent pupillary defect, that was initially misdiagnosed as optic neuritis and subsequently found to have paracentral acute middle maculopathy, possibly secondary to subtle impending central retinal vein occlusion. This case emphasizes the need to remember that retinal vascular diseases can occasionally mimic optic neuritis. Detailed anamnesis and ophthalmic examination can avoid unnecessary interventions.

Abstract: Studies have found that blood flow to the renal medulla is an important determinant of pressure-natriuresis and the long-term regulation of arterial pressure. First, a brief review of methods developed enabling the study of the medullary circulation is presented. Second, studies performed in rats are presented showing medullary blood flow plays a vital role in the pressure-natriuresis relationship and thereby in hypertension. Third, it is shown that chronic reduction of medullary blood flow results in hypertension and that enhancement of medullary blood flow reduces hypertension hereditary models of both salt-sensitive rats and salt-resistant forms of hypertension. The key role that medullary nitric oxide production plays in protecting this region from ischemic injury associated with circulating vasoconstrictor agents and reactive oxygen species is presented. The studies cited are largely the work of my students, research fellows, and colleagues with whom I have performed these studies dating from the late 1980s to more recent years.

Resumen Introducción: la lepra afecta a millones de personas deteriorando la salud física y mental, generando complicaciones como síntomas depresivos que pueden afectar la calidad de vida. Objetivo: estimar la prevalencia de síntomas depresivos en una agremiación de pacientes y expacientes con enfermedad de Hansen de una ciudad del Caribe colombiano. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo con muestreo no probabilístico en miembros de una agremiación de pacientes y ex-pacientes con enfermedad de Hansen de una ciudad del Caribe colombiano. Los síntomas depresivos fueron estimados mediante test de Beck I y los resultados se contrastaron con variables sociodemográficas y clínicas mediante análisis bivariado. Resultados: participaron 51 personas, con una edad promedio de 52 años (IC 35,7-68,5), y predominio del sexo masculino (57%). El 39% de la población cursó bachillerato, el 25% se encontraban en tratamiento al momento de la encuesta y el 33% presentaban algún grado de discapacidad. El 27%, 16% y 2% de la población presentó depresión leve, moderada y severa respectivamente. El síntoma depresivo más frecuentemente descrito fue la fatiga (13%) seguido de cambios en el apetito (84,2%), llanto (81,6%), y tristeza (79%). No se encontró relación estadísticamente significativa entre presencia de síntomas depresivos y características sociodemográficas, el tratamiento y la discapacidad. Conclusiones: el 35% de los encuestados con el test de Beck I obtuvo calificaciones compatibles con depresión, se recomienda incluir manejo especializado en salud mental dentro del abordaje integral del paciente y expaciente con enfermedad de Hansen.


ABSTACT Introduction: Leprosy affects millions of people, impairing both physical and mental health and giving rise to complications such as depressive symptoms that can impact the quality of life. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms in an association of patients and former patients with Hansen's disease in a city in the Colombian Caribbean. Materials and methods: A descriptive study with non-probabilistic sampling was conducted among members of an association of patients and former patients with Hansen's disease in a city in the Colombian Caribbean. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory, and the results were compared with sociodemographic and clinical variables through bivariate analysis. Results: Fifty-one individuals participated, with an average age of 52 years (CI 35.7-68.5), and a male predominance (57%). Thirty-nine percent of the population had completed high school, 25% were undergoing treatment at the time of the survey, and 33% had some degree of disability. Twenty-seven percent, 16%, and 2% of the population exhibited mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. The most frequently reported depressive symptom was fatigue (13%), followed by changes in appetite (84.2%), crying (81.6%), and sadness (79%). No statistically significant relationship was found between the presence of depressive symptoms and sociodemographic characteristics, treatment, or disability. Conclusions: It is evident that 35% of respondents scored in the range indicative of depression on the Beck Depression Inventory. Specialized mental health management is recommended to be included in the comprehensive care of patients and former patients with Hansen's disease.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery (ECIRS) has emerged as a promising technique for the management of large and complex kidney stones, potentially offering advantages over traditional Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL). This study aims to evaluate best practices, outcomes, and future perspectives associated with ECIRS. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive PubMed search was conducted from 2008 to 2024, using MESH terms and the following key words: "ECIRS" and "Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery" The search yielded 157 articles, including retrospective cohort studies, two randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and four meta-analyses comparing ECIRS with PCNL. Most important findings were summarized regarding indications, patient positioning, kidney access, tract size, surgical outcomes, and complications. Results: ECIRS demonstrated higher stone-free rate, lower complication rate, and a reduced need for multiple procedures compared to traditional PCNL. Additionally, ECIRS has the potential to integrate new technologies to further enhance outcomes. Conclusion: ECIRS demonstrates significant advantages in the management of large kidney stones. Future research should focus on well-designed RCTs to provide robust evidence of its efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness, potentially establishing ECIRS as the first option treatment for complex kidney stones.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Although nerves and vessels of the penis play important role in erection, there are few studies on their development in human fetus. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to analyze, quantitatively, in the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum, the development of the nerves and vessels in the fetal penis at different gestational ages. Material and Methods: Fifty-six fresh, macroscopically normal human fetuses aged from 13 to 36 weeks post-conception (WPC) were used. Gestational age was determined by the foot length criterion. Penises were immediately fixed in 10% formalin, and routinely processed for paraffin embedding, after which tissue sections from the mid-shaft were obtained. We used immunohistochemical staining to analyze the nerves and vessels in the corpus cavernous and in the corpus spongiosum. These elements were identified and quantified as percentage by using the Image-J software. Results: The quantitative analysis showed that the percentage of nerves varied from 3.03% to 20.35% in the corpora cavernosa and from 1.89% to 23.88% in the corpus spongiosum. The linear regression analysis indicated that nerves growth (incidence) in the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum correlated significantly and positively with fetal age (r2=0.9421, p<0.0001) and (r2=0.9312, p<0.0001), respectively, during the whole fetal period studied. Also, the quantitative analysis showed that the percentage of vessels varies from 2.96% to 12.86% in the corpora cavernosa and from 3.62% to 14.85% in the corpus spongiosum. The linear regression analysis indicated that vessels growth (appearance) in the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum correlated significantly and positively with fetal age (r2=0.8722, p<0.0001) and (r2=0.8218, p<0.0001), respectively, during the whole fetal period studied. In addition, the linear regression analysis demonstrated a more intense growth rate of nerves in the corpus spongiosum during the 2nd trimester of gestation, when compared with nerves in the corpora cavernosa. In addition, the linear regression analysis demonstrated a more intense growth rate of vessels in the corpus spongiosum when compared with the corpora cavernosa, during the whole fetal period studied. Conclusions: In the fetal period, the human penis undergoes major developmental changes, notably in the content and distribution of nerves and vessels. We found strong correlation between nerves and vessels growth (amount) with fetal age, both in the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum. There is significant greater proportional number of nerves than vessels during the whole fetal period studied. Also, nerves and vessels grow in a more intense rate than that of the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum areas.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological assessment of preschool children is essential for early detection of delays and referral for intervention prior to school entry. This is especially pertinent in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which are disproportionately impacted by micronutrient deficiencies and teratogenic exposures. The Grenada Learning and Memory Scale (GLAMS) was created for use in limited resource settings and includes a shopping list and face-name association test. Here, we present psychometric and normative data for the GLAMS in a Grenadian preschool sample. METHODS: Typically developing children between 36 and 72 months of age, primarily English speaking, were recruited from public preschools in Grenada. Trained Early Childhood Assessors administered the GLAMS and NEPSY-II in schools, homes, and clinics. GLAMS score distributions, reliability, and convergent/divergent validity against NEPSY-II were evaluated. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 400 children (190 males, 210 females). GLAMS internal consistency, inter-rater agreement, and test-retest reliability were acceptable. Principal components analysis revealed two latent factors, aligned with expected verbal/visual memory constructs. A female advantage was observed in verbal memory. Moderate age effects were observed on list learning/recall and small age effects on face-name learning/recall. All GLAMS subtests were correlated with NEPSY-II Sentence Repetition, supporting convergent validity with a measure of verbal working memory. CONCLUSIONS: The GLAMS is a psychometrically sound measure of learning and memory in Grenadian preschool children. Further adaptation and scale-up to global LMICs are recommended.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the use of etonogestrel (ENG) implants for menstrual management (i.e., management of bleeding and symptoms associated with menstruation) in individuals with intellectual disabilities. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed a cohort of individuals with intellectual disabilities who began using ENG implants between 2003 and 2018, in Joinville, Brazil. We collected sociodemographic, clinical, and reproductive data from the medical records, along with information related to ENG implant use. RESULTS: In total, 369 implants were placed in 130 individuals with intellectual disabilities. The median age at the first implant was 20 (interquartile range [IQR], 17-26) years, and 43.8% of the patients were adolescents. By December 2018, 90 patients had received two or more subsequent implants. The median duration of current ENG implant use was 19 (IQR, 12.8-22) months. More than 40% of the patients had comorbidities, with epilepsy being the most common. During the use of the current implant, 80% of the patients had a favorable bleeding profile (no bleeding or ≤1 bleeding episode per month), and 53.8% (70/130) had no bleeding within 3 months before their last medical visit. Among patients experiencing dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), 79% (64/81) and 82% (54/66) reported complete improvement, respectively. The premature implant removal rate was 8.9% (33/369). Unfavorable bleeding was the main reason for premature implant removal (20 out 33 removals). CONCLUSIONS: ENG implants might be a suitable option for individuals with intellectual disabilities who require management of menstrual bleeding and symptoms associated with menstruation. Most patients had a favorable bleeding profile and experienced significant improvements in dysmenorrhea and PMS, contributing to the high continuation rates of ENG implants.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, and its presentation differs according to age and sex. Recent studies have revealed differences in AF among various demographic groups, including the Latin American population. OBJECTIVES: To better understand potential disparities in AF prevalence and treatment strategies in the Brazilian population through data from a large multicentric prospective registry. METHODS: The Rede D'Or AF registry is a multicenter prospective observational study including patients aged ≥ 18 years with AF who were seen in the emergency department of 32 tertiary hospitals in Brazil. Patients were characterized according to sex and other baseline characteristics and were classified according to previous anticoagulant use. The lack of anticoagulant use in patients with previous indications was analyzed. Statistical significance was set at 5%. RESULTS: The study data were from a total of 1955 patients enrolled. Male sex was more prevalent, and men were younger than the women. Due to an increased prevalence of previous AF episode and a higher CHA2DS2-VASc score, more women had indications for anticoagulant therapy; however, a significant proportion was not receiving this treatment. From 29 in-hospital deaths, 15 patients had previous indication for anticoagulation, but only 3 were using anticoagulants. CONCLUSION: This study revealed sex-related differences in the Brazilian population of patients with AF that are consistent with trends in high-income countries. The promotion of better implementation of anticoagulant and antithrombotic therapies to reduce the risk of death and thromboembolic events among women with AF in Brazil is crucial.


FUNDAMENTO: A fibrilação atrial (FA) é a arritmia cardíaca mais prevalente e sua apresentação difere de acordo com a idade e o sexo. Estudos recentes revelaram diferenças na FA entre vários grupos demográficos, incluindo a população latino-americana. OBJETIVOS: Melhor compreender as possíveis disparidades na prevalência da FA e nas estratégias de tratamento na população brasileira por meio de dados de um registro prospectivo multicêntrico de grande escala. MÉTODOS: O registro de FA da Rede D'Or é um estudo observacional prospectivo multicêntrico que incluiu pacientes com idade ≥ 18 anos com FA atendidos no pronto-socorro de 32 hospitais terciários no Brasil. Os pacientes foram caracterizados de acordo com o sexo e outras características basais e classificados de acordo com o uso prévio de anticoagulantes. Foi analisada a falta de uso de anticoagulantes em pacientes com indicações prévias. A significância estatística foi estabelecida em 5%. RESULTADOS: Os dados do estudo foram provenientes de um total de 1.955 pacientes inscritos. O sexo masculino foi mais prevalente e os homens eram mais jovens que as mulheres. Devido ao aumento da prevalência de episódios anteriores de FA e a um escore CHA2DS2-VASc mais elevado, mais mulheres tiveram indicação de terapia anticoagulante; no entanto, uma proporção significativa não estava recebendo esse tratamento. Dos 29 óbitos intra-hospitalares, 15 pacientes tinham indicação prévia para anticoagulação, mas apenas 3 estavam em uso de anticoagulantes. CONCLUSÃO: O presente estudo revelou diferenças relacionadas ao sexo na população brasileira de pacientes com FA que são consistentes com tendências em países de alta renda. A promoção de uma melhor implementação de terapias anticoagulantes e antitrombóticas para reduzir o risco de óbito e eventos tromboembólicos entre mulheres com FA no Brasil é crucial.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections are prevalent among children and are responsible for a significant healthcare burden. Antibiotic therapy is the cornerstone of treatment, but the optimal treatment duration remains elusive. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the optimal duration of antibiotic therapy for urinary tract infection (UTI) in pediatric patients. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive search was performed, including MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We included only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing short-course (2 to 5 days) and standard-course (≥ 7 days) antibiotic treatment in patients < 18 years of age. STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS METHODS: We performed this systematic review and meta-analysis following Cochrane Collaboration recommendations using a random-effects model. Effect estimate was calculated using the risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for dichotomous and mean difference (MD) with 95% CI for continuous endpoints. Significance was regarded at p-value < 0.05. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4.1. RESULTS: Data from 12 RCTs, encompassing 1442 children, were included. Follow-up ranged from 1 to 12 months. The mean age was 5.9 years, with approximately 87% female patients. E. coli was the most common pathogen isolated from urine cultures. There was a significant difference in cure rates (RR 0.97; 95% CI 0.95-0.99; p = 0.01) between the groups when only studies that included febrile UTI were analyzed together, favoring 7 days or more of treatment, but with high heterogeneity. Otherwise, there was no significant difference in cure rates (RR 0.99; 95% CI 0.91-1.08; p = 0.80) in children with afebrile UTI or recurrence of UTI at any time in children with afebrile (RR 0.98; 95% CI 0.84-1.15; p = 0.80) or febrile UTI (RR 0.52; 95% CI 0.10-2.83; p = 0.45). Also, there was no significant difference in failure rates in children with urinary tract abnormalities and afebrile UTI (RR 0.79; 95% CI 0.47-1.32; p = 0.36), between the short- and the standard-course treatment groups. LIMITATIONS: This analysis was limited by the moderate heterogeneity and the small subgroup of children with urinary tract abnormalities, which could have underpowered our results. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF KEY FINDINGS: The primary outcome of this analysis suggests that a short course of antibiotic therapy is feasible in children with afebrile UTI, but more studies are warranted to safely establish an optimal treatment duration for children with febrile UTI. While physical activity and zinc supplementation have shown benefits in diabetes management, little is known about their effect on less severe glucose homeostasis disorders, such as impaired glucose tolerance. On the other hand, sirtuins have an important role in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, but to date, there is no information about the impact of zinc supplementation or physical activity on their regulation in individuals with impaired glucose homeostasis. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of supplemental zinc, muscle-resistance training, and their combination on the expression of selected sirtuins in insulin-sensitive tissues of rats with impaired glucose tolerance. Thirty male Wistar rats with impaired glucose tolerance were fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks while subjected to zinc supplementation, resistance training, both, or none. Morphometric and metabolic evaluations were performed at the end of the experimental period, and gene expression of sirtuins 1, 2, 4, and 7 was assessed in liver, gastrocnemius muscle, and white adipose tissue. Results showed that zinc supplementation and/or resistance training did not improve metabolic parameters of rats with impaired glucose tolerance, nor did they affect the expression of selected sirtuins in any of the tissues evaluated. However, the expression of some sirtuins was associated with metabolic parameters in a tissue-specific manner. Additional studies are needed to evaluate whether zinc supplementation and/or resistance training can improve metabolic status or modulate sirtuins expression in advanced stages of impaired glucose homeostasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin disease characterized by abnormal proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes and activation of immune cells. However, the molecular driver that triggers this immune response in psoriatic skin remains unclear. The inflammation-related gene absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) was identified as a susceptibility gene/locus associated with psoriasis. In this study, we investigated the role of AIM2 in the pathophysiology of psoriasis. We found elevated levels of mitochondrial DNA in patients with psoriasis, along with high expression of AIM2 in both the human psoriatic epidermis and a mouse model of psoriasis induced by topical imiquimod (IMQ) application. Genetic ablation of AIM2 reduced the development of IMQ-induced psoriasis by decreasing the production of type 3 cytokines (such as IL-17A and IL-23) and infiltration of immune cells into the inflammatory site. Furthermore, we demonstrate that IL-17A induced AIM2 expression in keratinocytes. Finally, the genetic absence of inflammasome components downstream AIM2, ASC, and caspase-1 alleviated IMQ-induced skin inflammation. Collectively, our data show that AIM2 is involved in developing psoriasis through its canonical activation.

Diversity and interspecific synchrony are among the main drivers behind the temporal stability of community abundance. Diversity can increase stability through the portfolio effect, while higher synchrony generally decreases stability. In turn, species interactions and similar responses to environmental variation are considered the main factors underlying the strength of interspecific synchrony, despite the challenges in determining their relative roles. The analysis of the relationship between interspecific synchrony and the trait (or phylogenetic) distance between species can increase the robustness of inferences about these factors. Here, we used pairwise interspecific and community-wide analyses to investigate, respectively, the drivers of interspecific synchrony and the influence of trait and phylogenetic diversity on the stability of fish communities. For that, we used 18 years of fish abundance data from the Upper Paraná River floodplain. At the interspecific level, we used quantile regressions to test within-guild relationships between interspecific synchrony and trait and phylogenetic distance between species. At the community level, we tested the relationships between community-wide synchrony, stability, and (trait and phylogenetic) diversity. We found that interspecific synchrony decreased with trait and phylogenetic distances. In the community-level analysis, we found that more synchronous fish communities were less stable, but the relationship between diversity and stability was in general weak. At the interspecific level, our study highlights the role of similar responses to environmental variation in driving species' temporal dynamics. At the community level, the strength of the relationships between trait or phylogenetic diversity and community stability depended on the feeding guild. On the other hand, we found strong relationships between synchrony and stability. These results suggest that increased synchrony levels in response to regional environmental changes could decrease the stability of fish communities in this floodplain.

Widely documented in animals, behavioural thermoregulation mitigates negative impacts of climate change. Plants experience especially strong thermal variability but evidence for plant behavioural thermoregulation is limited. Along a montane elevation gradient, Argentina anserina flowers warm more in alpine populations than at lower elevation. We linked floral temperature with phenotypes to identify warming mechanisms and documented petal movement and pollinator visitation using time-lapse cameras. High elevation flowers were more cupped, focused light deeper within flowers and were more responsive to air temperature than low; cupping when cold and flattening when warm. At high elevation, a 20° increase in petal angle resulted in a 0.46°C increase in warming. Warming increased pollinator visitation, especially under cooler high elevation temperatures. A plasticity study revealed constitutive elevational differences in petal cupping and stronger temperature-induced floral plasticity in high elevation populations. Thus, plant populations have evolved different behavioural responses to temperature driving differences in thermoregulatory capacity.

Gallium sulfide (GaS) stands out as a versatile nonlinear optical material for green-blue optoelectronic and photocatalytic nano-devices. In addition, the in-plane breaking strain and mechanical strength of layered GaS make it a promising candidate for next-generation flexible nanodevices. The fast and reliable assessment of the number of layers, without sample loss, is key for these applications. Here we unveil the influence of dimensionality in the structural, mechanical, and vibrational properties of GaS by applying density-functional theory-based quantum-simulations and group-theory analysis. We find its intralayer structure and interlayer distances are essentially independent of the number of layers, in agreement with the van der Waals forces as dominant interlayer interactions. The translational symmetry breaking along the stacking direction results in different structural symmetries for monolayers, N-odd layers, N-even layers, and bulk geometries. Its force constants against rigid-layer shear, KLSM = 1.35 × 1019 N m-3, and breathing, KLBM = 5.00 × 1019 N m-3, displacements remain the same from bulk to bilayer structures. The related stiffness coefficients in bulk are C44 = 10.2 GPa and C33 = 37.7 GPa, respectively. This insight into GaS interlayer interactions and elastic coefficients reveals it as a promising lubricant for nano-mechanic applications and it is easy to cleave for thickness engineering, even in comparison with layered graphite, MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides and group-IIIA metal monochalcogenides. We present the GaS Raman and infrared spectra dependence on the layer number as strategies for sample thickness characterization and derive formulas for distinguishing the number of layers in both high and low-frequency regimes. In addition, our analysis of their optical-activity selection rules and polarization dependencies is applicable to isostructural group-IIIA metal monochalcogenides with 2H-layer stacking, such as gallium/indium sulphide/selenide. These results contribute to rapid and non-destructive characterization of the material's structure, which is of paramount importance for the manufacturing of devices and the utilization of its diverse properties.

The pampas of South America represent one of the most productive lands for agriculture in the world, and consequently this activity has expanded throughout the region, especially in Argentina. In this context, native fauna faces various risks associated with agriculture, with exposure to pesticides being one of the most dangerous and deadly. Assessing the impact of pesticides on wildlife becomes fundamental and the use of sentinel species emerges as an important tool to monitor environmental health. In this study, we determined pesticide levels in the burrowing owl Athene cunicularia nesting in both rural and urban areas of the argentinean pampas. We used a multiple scale approach to evaluate the influence of land-uses (urban, crops, and grazing fields) at the nesting site on the contaminant load of A. cunicularia individuals, and assessed the potential use of this owl as a sentinel species. From March 2018 to January 2020, A. cunicularia feathers were collected at their nest sites in one urban and two rural areas. These samples were analyzed for the presence of contaminants, including chlorpyrifos and 18 organochlorine pesticides. All the compounds analyzed were detected in A. cunicularia samples. The chlorpyrifos showed the highest frequency of occurrence and concentration, thus denoting the exposure of owls to current-use pesticides. ∑DDTs showed the highest occurrence among organochlorines, followed by ∑HCHs > ∑Endosulfans > ∑Heptachlors > ∑Drins = ∑Chlordanes > methoxychlor. Principal Component Analysis showed that most of the compounds found in A. cunicularia samples showed a positive association with grazing fields, suggesting that exposure to contaminants does not depend on specific habitat use at the local scale, but probably the regional scale. Our results evidenced the exposure of A. cunicularia individuals to past and current-use pesticides in the pampas of Argentina, and indicate that this owl would be useful as a sentinel species.

Iron Formations (IF) are threatened by mining, particularly the Mesovoid Shallow Substratum (MSS), an understudied subterranean environment. We evaluate the spatiotemporal patterns of subterranean fauna in MSS of iron duricrust (canga) in the Iron Quadrangle and Southern Espinhaço Range, southeastern Brazil. Samplings took place between July 2014 and June 2022 using five trap types. We sampled 108,005 individuals, 1,054 morphospecies, and seven phyla, globally the largest dataset on MSS in IF. Arthropoda represented 97% of all invertebrates sampled. We identified 31 troglomorphic organisms, primarily Arthropoda and Platyhelminthes. MSS traps were the most efficient method, capturing 80% of all invertebrates. Morphospecies were more prevalent in each locality than shared among localities. Species replacement was the main processes to spatial differences. Over time, we found a decrease of total dissimilarity and importance of species replacement for troglomorphic organisms. A positive correlation between spatial distance and compositional dissimilarity of invertebrates was found. Iron Quadrangle and Southern Espinhaço Range showed marked differences in the spatiotemporal patterns of subterranean fauna. Brazilian IF are threatened, with their biological significance not fully understood but highly endangered due their limited distribution. Conservation efforts require a comprehensive understanding of both biotic and abiotic factors shaping the entire IF ecosystem.

The Atlantic Forest Biome (AFB) creates an ideal environment for the proliferation of vector mosquitoes, such as Haemagogus and Sabethes species, which transmit the Yellow Fever virus (YFV) to both human and non-human primates (NHP) (particularly Alouatta sp. and Callithrix sp.). From 2016 to 2020, 748 fatal cases of YF in humans and 1,763 in NHPs were reported in this biome, following several years free from the disease. This underscores the imminent risk posed by the YFV. In this study, we examined the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of YF cases in both NHPs and humans across the entire AFB during the outbreak period, using a generalized linear mixed regression model (GLMM) at the municipal level. Our analysis examined factors associated with the spread of YFV, including environmental characteristics, climate conditions, human vaccination coverage, and the presence of two additional YFV-affected NHP species. The occurrence of epizootics has been directly associated with natural forest formations and the presence of species within the Callithrix genus. Additionally, epizootics have been shown to be directly associated with human prevalence. Furthermore, human prevalence showed an inverse correlation with urban areas, temporary croplands, and savannah and grassland areas. Further analyses using Moran's Index to incorporate the neighborhoods of municipalities with cases in each studied host revealed additional variables, such as altitude, which showed a positive correlation. Additionally, the occurrence of the disease in both hosts exhibited a spatio-temporal distribution pattern. To effectively mitigate the spread of the virus, it is necessary to proactively expand vaccination coverage, refine NHP surveillance strategies, and enhance entomological surveillance in both natural and modified environments.
