RESUMO
The authors report a girl with left-sided hemiparesis and unilateral hydranencephaly of the opposite side. Her psychomotor development has been far better than expected--she is only mildly delayed. Hemihydranencephaly is a rare anomaly: only five other cases are reported in the literature, three of whom were also mildly delayed. The fourth patient had multiple congenital defects combined with the hemihydranencephaly and was severely retarded, and no data on the fifth patient were provided. It may be that the prognosis for hemihydranencephaly is better than for most other destructive encephalopathies, which generally carry a poor prognosis for psychomotor development.

Multiple cystic brain lesions in neonates have been described as a result of a variety of causes. All events described thus far in association with multicystic encephalomalacia (MCE) seem to point to hypoxic-ischaemic injury as the common factor for this particular form of central nervous system damage. We describe a neonate in whom repeated, prolonged episodes of intrauterine tachycardia had been documented. Congestive heart failure and fetal hydrops were present at birth and MCE at the age of 13 wk. The obvious relationship between this child's intrauterine tachycardia and his MCE points to the fact that any fetus with prolonged tachycardia should be considered at risk of severe brain damage.

A 7-year-old boy developed fatal aplastic anaemia, 2 weeks after the first signs of infectious mononucleosis. Although some drugs were administered, infection with the Epstein-Barr virus, leading to infectious mononucleosis, is assumed to be the cause of this aplastic anaemia. Some mechanisms possibly leading to the aplasia are discussed.
