RESUMO

Phonon polaritons are promising for infrared applications due to a strong light-matter coupling and subwavelength energy confinement they offer. Yet, the spectral narrowness of the phonon bands and difficulty to tune the phonon polariton properties hinder further progress in this field. SrTiO3 - a prototype perovskite oxide - has recently attracted attention due to two prominent far-infrared phonon polaritons bands, albeit without any tuning reported so far. Here we show, using cryogenic infrared near-field microscopy, that long-propagating surface phonon polaritons are present both in bare SrTiO3 and in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures hosting a two-dimensional electron gas. The presence of the two-dimensional electron gas increases dramatically the thermal variation of the upper limit of the surface phonon polariton band due to temperature dependent polaronic screening of the surface charge carriers. Furthermore, we demonstrate a tunability of the upper surface phonon polariton frequency in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 via electrostatic gating. Our results suggest that oxide interfaces are a new platform bridging unconventional electronics and long-wavelength nanophotonics.

RESUMO

This case report presents the case of a 29 weeks pregnant woman in her late twenties who was seen at the emergency department of a hospital with a seizure of unknown cause. By anamnesis and hetero-anamnesis the use of illicit gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) was revealed. Examination showed dilated pupils, sweating, tremor, tachycardia and bradyphrenic thinking. Subsequently, the seizure was indicated as a severe illicit GHB withdrawal symptom. Thereafter, treatment had to be decided on in the absence of evidence-based and practiced-based guidelines and treatment options for this specific patient population. Initially diazepam was started, which was later on substituted by sodium oxybate. Despite the critical professional situation the patient gave birth to a healthy daughter after 37 weeks of pregnancy.

RESUMO

We present an optical study that reveals the bulk dynamics of the stratification process in drying colloidal dispersions. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been used to measure in situ solventborne and waterborne paint layers as a function of drying time. The dynamic behavior of the dry top layer and wet bottom layer thickness, as well as the bulk thickness, reflect the principal processes of the established drying mechanism. In addition, the results demonstrate stratification only when the drying process is in the evaporation controlled regime, whereas the coating is shown to remain a single layer for diffusion controlled drying.

RESUMO

We propose a novel terahertz material analysis approach that provides highly accurate material parameters and can be used for industrial quality control. The method treats the inspected material within its environment locally as a stratified system and describes the light-matter interaction of each layer in a realistic way. The approach is illustrated in the time-domain and frequency-domain for two potential fields of implementation of terahertz technology: quality control of (coated) paper sheets and car paint multilayers, both measured in humid air.

RESUMO

The terahertz (THz) excitations in the quantum spin-ladder system Sr14Cu24O41 have been determined along the c axis using THz time-domain, Raman, and infrared spectroscopy. Low-frequency infrared and Raman active modes are observed above and below the charge-ordering temperature T(co) is approximately equal to 200 K over a narrow interval approximately equal to 1-2 meV approximately equal to 8-16 cm(-1)). A new infrared mode at approximately equal to 1 meV develops below approximately equal to 100 K. The temperature dependence of these modes shows that they are coupled to the charge- and spin-density-wave correlations in this system. These low-energy features are conjectured to originate in the gapped sliding motion of the chain and ladder subsystems, which are both incommensurate and charged.

RESUMO

We present a magneto-optical study of the three-dimensional topological insulator, strained HgTe, using a technique which capitalizes on advantages of time-domain spectroscopy to amplify the signal from the surface states. This measurement delivers valuable and precise information regarding the surface-state dispersion within <1 meV of the Fermi level. The technique is highly suitable for the pursuit of the topological magnetoelectric effect and axion electrodynamics.

RESUMO

We show an example of a purely magnetic spin resonance in EuTiO(3) and the resulting new record high Faraday rotation of 590°/mm at 1.6 T for 1 cm wavelengths probed by a novel technique of magneto-optical gigahertz time-domain ellipsometry. From our transmission measurements of linear polarized light, we map out the complex index of refraction n=√ϵµ in the gigahertz to terahertz range. We observe a strong resonant absorption by magnetic dipole transitions involving the Zeeman split S=7/2 magnetic energy levels of the Eu(2+) ions, which causes a very large dichroism for circular polarized radiation.

RESUMO

The lipid matrix present in the uppermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, plays a crucial role in the skin barrier function. The lipids are organized into two lamellar phases. To gain more insight into the molecular organization of one of these lamellar phases, we performed neutron diffraction studies. In the diffraction pattern, five diffraction orders were observed attributed to a lamellar phase with a repeat distance of 5.4 nm. Using contrast variation, the scattering length density profile could be calculated showing a typical bilayer arrangement. To obtain information on the arrangement of ceramides in the unit cell, a mixture that included a partly deuterated ceramide was also examined. The scattering length density profile of the 5.4-nm phase containing this deuterated ceramide demonstrated a symmetric arrangement of the ceramides with interdigitating acyl chains in the center of the unit cell.

RESUMO

We report a comprehensive THz, infrared and optical study of Nb-doped SrTiO3 as well as dc conductivity and Hall effect measurements. Our THz spectra at 7 K show the presence of an unusually narrow (<2 meV) Drude peak. For all carrier concentrations the Drude spectral weight shows a factor of three mass enhancement relative to the effective mass in the local density approximation, whereas the spectral weight contained in the incoherent midinfrared response indicates that the mass enhancement is at least a factor two. We find no evidence of a particularly large electron-phonon coupling that would result in small polaron formation.

RESUMO

Two full-length lipoxygenase cDNA sequences (LoxB and LoxC) from barley (Hordeum distichum cv. L. Triumph) are described. The cDNAs share high homology with the barley LoxA cDNA. Southern blotting experiments indicate single copy numbers of the three lipoxygenase genes. RFLP mapping revealed the presence of single lipoxygenase loci. LoxA and LoxB map on chromosome 4 and LoxC on chromosome 7. Two isoenzymes, LOX1 and LOX2, have been purified previously from germinating barley and characterized. LOX1 is encoded by LoxA, while LOX2 is encoded by LoxC. The product related to the third cDNA (loxB) has not been identified so far, suggesting a low protein abundance for the corresponding isoform in barley. Transcripts corresponding with these LOX genes are predominantly observed in grain and in seedling, whereas transcripts corresponding to LoxB and LoxC are also observed in mature vegetative tissue. No lipoxygenase mRNA could be detected in aleurone layer of germinating grain. No significant differences in lipoxygenase mRNA levels were observed in developing grains grown under dormant or non-dormant conditions, suggesting that LOX is not directly involved in induction of grain dormancy.

RESUMO

The barley lipoxygenase 1 (Lox1) gene encodes a protein expressed in embryos during grain development and germination and in leaves after methyl-jasmonate (MeJA) treatment. Transient gene expression assays in germinating barley embryos were used to identify cis-regulatory elements involved in the embryo-specific expression of the Lox1 gene. Analysis of transcriptional or translational fusions between Lox1 5' upstream sequences and the gusA reporter gene indicated that the 5'-untranslated leader sequence was involved in embryo-specific expression. Replacement of the leader sequence from the aleurone-specific Chi26 gene with the Lox1 leader sequence resulted in a chimeric gene expressed at high levels in embryo as well as in aleurone cells. Insertion of the Lox1 leader sequence between the 35S minimum promoter (A domain -90/+8) and the gusA reporter gene greatly enhanced promoter activity in a tissue-specific manner. Deletion/replacement analysis of the Lox1 leader sequence, combined with transient expression in germinating embryos and in vitro transcription/translation assays, suggests that the Lox1 leader sequence contains cis-elements regulating qualitative (tissue-specific) and quantitative gene expression.

RESUMO

A full length cDNA sequence for a barley grain lipoxygenase was obtained. It includes a 5' untranslated region of 69 nucleotides, an open reading frame of 2586 nucleotides encoding a protein of 862 amino acid residues and a 3' untranslated region of 142 nucleotides. The molecular mass of the encoded polypeptide was calculated to be 96.392. Its amino acid sequence shows a high homology with that of other plant lipoxygenases identified to date.

RESUMO

Aeromonas salmonicida is a significant bacterial pathogen of cyprinid and salmonid fishes causing the systemic disease furunculosis. Several observations led us to believe that A. salmonicida was able to evade or suppress the immune system of the fish: injection of whole bacteria or surface antigens was unsuccessful at protecting fish against lethal challenges; memory did not develop in survivors of sublethal infections; diseased fish often carried other opportunistic bacterial pathogens in addition to A. salmonicida, and serum protein and particularly immunoglobulin significantly decreased during A. salmonicida infections. We tested the ability of fish sublethally infected with virulent and avirulent A. salmonicida to mount a humoral immune response to sheep erythrocytes and found fewer plaque forming cells in the pronephros and lower serum anti-SRBC antibodies in infected fish as compared to controls. We also monitored the cellular immune response of diseased fish by skin allograft rejection and found an enhancement of the response that increased as the disease progressed. However, the extend of inflammation was reduced in infected fish as compared to non-infected animals. At this moment these preliminary observations are difficult to explain. Our future research will focus more specifically on cell populations that may be affected by A. salmonicida.

RESUMO

The role of specific amino acid residues of the K88ab and K99 fibrillar adhesins in the binding to erythrocytes and antibodies has been studied by chemical modification. It appeared that: (1) The integrity of the single disulfide bridge in the K99 subunits is essential for the binding of the fibrillae to the glycolipid receptors, but not for the recognition and binding of specific anti-K99 antibodies. (2) Modification of one lysine residue per subunit with 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzoate results in the loss of the adhesive capacity of K99 fibrillae. Lysine residue are not important for the adhesive activity of K88ab fibrillae. Three or five lysine residues per subunit, respectively, can be modified without an effect on the immunological properties of the K99 and K88ab fibrillae. (3) Limited reaction of K99 and K88ab fibrillae with 2,3-butanedione destroys the adhesive activity of both fibrillae. This inactivation corresponds with the loss of one (K99) or two (K88ab) arginine residues per subunit. Ultimately, in K99 three, and in K88ab four, arginine residues per subunit can be modified without affecting the binding of specific antibodies. (4) Modification of five out of the nine carboxyl groups contained in the K99 subunit suppresses the recognition of specific anti-K99 antibodies, but carboxylates are not important for the adhesive activity of K99 fibrillae. Modification of two additional carboxylates in K99 results in an insoluble product. (5) Tyrosine residues are most probably not present in the adhesive or antigenic sites of K99 fibrillae. Modification of six out of the ten tyrosine residues in the K88ab subunit results in a decrease in adhesive activity but has no effect on the reaction with anti-K88ab antibodies.
