BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted health, mental well-being, and societal functioning, particularly for individuals with psychiatric conditions and substance use disorders. Recent evidence highlights a concerning increase in alcohol consumption during the pandemic, with a study spanning 2015-2020 indicating heightened usage, especially among young and middle-aged adults, for relaxation and tension relief. Additionally, addressing challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, another study underscored persistent barriers to healthcare access, resulting in increased alcohol and tobacco use rates and limited healthcare options. These findings shed light on the unique vulnerabilities exposed by the pandemic, emphasizing the need to investigate further its impact on alcohol consumption in diverse non-urban American communities. AIM: To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on alcohol abuse using socioeconomic and medical parameters in diverse non-urban community in America. METHODS: Based on a cross-sectional analysis of 416 participants the United States in 2021, the study utilized The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria to categorize alcohol consumption levels. Participants aged 21 years and above were surveyed through an online platform due to COVID-19 challenges. The survey was conducted from January 14 to January 31, 2022, recruiting participants via social media and ensuring anonymity. Informed consent was secured, emphasizing the voluntary nature of participation, and participants could only take the survey once. RESULTS: Out of 416 survey respondents, 396 met eligibility criteria, with 62.9% reporting increased alcohol consumption during COVID-19. Males (68.8%) and ages 21-29 years (34.6%) predominated. Low alcohol consumption decreased by 2.8% (P = 0.237), moderate by 21.4% (P < 0.001), and heavy increased by 14.9% (P < 0.001). Alcohol abuse rose by 6.5% (P = 0.0439), with a 7% increase in self-identified alcohol abusers/alcoholics. Seeking treatment during COVID-19 rose by 6.9%. Easier alcohol access (76.0%) was reported, while 80.7% found it harder to access medical care for alcohol-related issues. These findings highlight the pandemic's impact on alcohol consumption and healthcare access, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions during public health crises. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated alcoholism and abuse, with increased heavy consumption (P < 0.001) and abuse (P = 0.0439). Access to medical programs for addressing alcohol abuse declined, highlighting the need for targeted intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Digital substance use treatment programs present an opportunity to provide nonresidential care for people with problematic substance use. In June 2021, the provincial government in Ontario provided free access to Breaking Free Online (BFO), a digital behavioral change program for people with substance use disorders. METHODS: An observational study was conducted with retrospective data to characterize clients' use and engagement patterns in BFO and examine changes in self-reported outcomes. RESULTS: In total, 6,370 individuals registered for BFO between June 2021 and October 2022, of whom 3,650 completed the intake assessment. Most of these clients were self-referred (64%), with 37% having been referred by health service providers. More than one-half of the clients (52%) resided in Ontario West or East regions. Support for addressing problematic alcohol use was the most requested program (40%). By October 2022, about 44% of the clients had completed between one and four of 12 program strategies. Analysis revealed significant changes in pre-post scores across four validated scales (p<0.001), indicating a decrease in anxiety and depression, an increase in quality of life, an improvement in recovery progression, and a decrease in severity of symptoms associated with substance use disorders. CONCLUSIONS: BFO clients with higher completion rates had the most improvement across the scales used; however, clients with lower and medium completion rates also had improvements. Because of the shame and stigma associated with substance use, digital supports with low barriers to entry can help support the autonomy, privacy, and preferences of individuals seeking help for problematic substance use.

Multiple studies have demonstrated that acute ethanol consumption alters brain function and cognition. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain poorly understood. Astrocyte-mediated gliotransmission is crucial for hippocampal plasticity, and recently, the opening of hemichannels has been found to play a relevant role in this process. Hemichannels are plasma membrane channels composed of six connexins or seven pannexins, respectively, that oligomerize around a central pore. They serve as ionic and molecular exchange conduits between the cytoplasm and extracellular milieu, allowing the release of various paracrine substances, such as ATP, D-serine, and glutamate, and the entry of ions and other substances, such as Ca2+ and glucose. The persistent and exacerbated opening of hemichannels has been associated with the pathogenesis and progression of several brain diseases for at least three mechanisms. The uncontrolled activity of these channels could favor the collapse of ionic gradients and osmotic balance, the release of toxic levels of ATP or glutamate, cell swelling and plasma membrane breakdown and intracellular Ca2+ overload. Here, we evaluated whether acute ethanol exposure affects the activity of astrocyte hemichannels and the possible repercussions of this phenomenon on cytoplasmatic Ca2+ signaling and gliotransmitter release. Acute ethanol exposure triggered the rapid activation of connexin43 and pannexin1 hemichannels in astrocytes, as measured by time-lapse recordings of ethidium uptake. This heightened activity derived from a rapid rise in [Ca2+]i linked to extracellular Ca2+ influx and IP3-evoked Ca2+ release from intracellular Ca2+ stores. Relevantly, the acute ethanol-induced activation of hemichannels contributed to a persistent secondary increase in [Ca2+]i. The [Ca2+]i-dependent activation of hemichannels elicited by ethanol caused the increased release of ATP and glutamate in astroglial cultures and brain slices. Our findings offer fresh perspectives on the potential mechanisms behind acute alcohol-induced brain abnormalities and propose targeting connexin43 and pannexin1 hemichannels in astrocytes as a promising avenue to prevent deleterious consequences of alcohol consumption.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is linked to an attentional bias towards alcohol-related cues (e.g. images, smells), which acquire incentive properties and promote continued consumption. METHOD: We investigated how the general and alcohol attentional bias evolved longitudinally in AUD patients along two periods of abstinence: t = 0 (baseline, 1-3 months of abstinence) and t = 1 (follow-up; 6 months of abstinence), as well as their relationship with alcohol-related variables. General and alcohol-specific attentional bias were evaluated by the Classic and the Alcohol Stroop tests (neutral and alcohol conditions) in abstinent AUD patients and controls. RESULTS: At t = 0, the AUD group exhibited both general and alcohol-specific attentional biases, with greater effect in the general bias. At t = 1, alcohol-specific attentional bias decreased specifically in the AUD group and reached control levels (with interference index levels increasing from 1-3 months to 6 months). However, general attentional bias showed a trend toward improvement but it did not significantly change through abstinence process (linear mixed models, controlling for age, BMI, sex and education). CONCLUSIONS: In AUD patients, general and alcohol attentional biases exhibit different trajectories during abstinence, with the attentional bias toward alcohol improving significantly throughout this process whereas general attentional bias is maintained.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on prevalence rates and self-reported changes in patterns of alcohol use among first-year university students in Spain, considering the risk of problematic alcohol use. A serial cross-sectional study based on the uniHcos project was carried out. Data from 10,518 first-year university students (73.3% female, mean age 19 (SD=1.6)) collected between 2012 and 2022 were analysed. The evolution of the pooled prevalence rates during the time series was analysed and the risk of problematic alcohol consumption was assessed using the AUDIT. Also, self-reported changes in alcohol use patterns during the pandemic were assessed. According to the results, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of alcohol use in the past 30-days was reduced (76.3% in 2019 vs. 63.7% in COVID-19) and increased again in the New Normal period. Thus, a similar pattern in the practice of binge drinking was observed. Regarding the AUDIT score, 21.7% (95%CI 20.9, 22.6) of the students had harmful alcohol consumption, with a higher proportion among males. In the multivariable logistic models, a higher AUDIT score was significantly associated (p-value<0.001) with being male and living with roommates. According to self-reported changes in consumption patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic, a higher proportion of participants with harmful use reported an increase in alcohol consumption compared to those at low-risk (43% vs 19%). Finally, despite the overall reduction in drinking prevalence during COVID-19, changes were not equal for all students and depended on their previous level of problematic drinking, highlighting that this should be considered in the development of strategies against alcohol use in this population.

Long-standing overt ventriculomegaly in adults (LOVA) is a kind of chronic hydrocephalus that has been reported to have started in infancy and is characterized by severe ventriculomegaly and macrocephaly. It often manifests clinically in later adulthood. We describe the case of a 34-year-old male patient who had a history of chronic alcoholism and who had been complaining of headaches, disturbed gait, and frequent falls for three months when he arrived in a stupor at the emergency room. Massive ventriculomegaly with Evans' index of 0.40 was found during a head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The MRI results were more severe than the clinical manifestations. He was diagnosed with LOVA and treated with conservative hyperosmolar drugs, neuroprotective agents, and intravenous (IV) thiamine. The patient was discharged and consented to follow-up after a hospital stay of seven days.

BACKGROUND: Clinic-based interventions are needed to promote successful direct acting antiviral (DAA) treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) among rural Veterans. METHODS: We implemented a clinic-based intervention which used motivational interviewing (MI) techniques to promote medication adherence and treatment completion with 12 weeks of DAA treatment among rural Veterans with chronic HCV and SUDs. Patients received an MI session with a licensed psychologist at baseline and at each two-week follow-up visit during DAA treatment. Patients received $25 per study visit completed. Patients were to attend a laboratory visit 12 weeks after treatment completion to assess for sustained virologic response (SVR). RESULTS: Of the 20 participants who enrolled, 75% (n = 15) completed the planned 12-week course of treatment. Average adherence by pill count was 92% (SD = 3%). Overall SVR was 95% (19/20). CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that a clinic-based intervention which incorporated frequent follow up visits and MI techniques was feasible and acceptable to a sample of predominantly rural Veterans with chronic HCV and SUDs. Acute alcohol intoxication is a harmful clinical condition characterized by behavioral and neurological symptoms, for which few effective therapies are available at present. Dysfunction of microglial BV-2 cells has been reported to be associated with acute alcohol-induced brain injuries. In the present study, the protective effects of Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. leaves polysaccharides (EULP) on acute alcoholic brain injury and microglial dysfunction were investigated. 14-day pretreatment of EULP significantly attenuated neurobehavioral deficit and neurotransmitter damage in the brain tissue of mice caused by acute alcohol exposure. Additionally, EULP regulated the metabolic disorder of brain tissue. Consistently, it was shown that EULP pretreatment significantly improved alcohol-induced phagocytosis decrease, oxidative stress and inflammation in BV-2 cells. Therefore, EULP may be proposed and employed as a potential therapeutic agent for alcohol-induced brain damage.

Background: Hyperkatifeia describes amplified emotional and motivational withdrawal due to addiction-related sensitization of brain-stress-systems. Hyperkatifeia has been proposed as a target for addiction treatment development. However, translation of basic research in this area will require new tools designed to measure hyperkatifeia and related phenomena outside of laboratory settings.Objectives: We define a novel concept, withdrawal interference, and introduce a new tool - the Withdrawal Interference Scale (WIS) - which measures the impact of withdrawal on daily life among individuals with OUD or AUD.Methods: Described are the combined results of three separate cross-sectional studies. The structural validity, convergent validity, construct validity, trans-diagnostic (AUD/OUD) configural, metric, and scalar invariance, internal consistency, and composite reliability of WIS was tested among three independent samples of 1) treatment-seeking adults with OUD (n = 132), 2) treatment-seeking adults with AUD (n = 123), and 3) non-treatment-seeking adults with OUD (n = 140). Males numbered 218 and females were 163.Results: WIS exhibited structural validity (1 factor), convergent validity (average variance extracted .670-.676), construct validity, trans-diagnostic configural (χ2/df = 2.10), metric (Δχ2 = 5.70, p = .681), and scalar invariance (Δχ2 = 12.34, p = .338), internal consistency (α .882-928), and composite reliability (.924-.925).Conclusion: These results suggest WIS is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring withdrawal-related life disruption in AUD and OUD. Further, given our findings of transdiagnostic measurement invariance, WIS scores of individuals with AUD and OUD can be meaningfully compared in future statistical analyses.

Purpose: Pueraria lobata (P. lobata), a dual-purpose food and medicine, displays limited efficacy in alcohol detoxification and liver protection, with previous research primarily focused on puerarin in its dried roots. In this study, we investigated the potential effects and mechanisms of fresh P. lobata root-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (P-ELNs) for mitigating alcoholic intoxication, promoting alcohol metabolism effects and protecting the liver in C57BL/6J mice. Methods: We isolated P-ELNs from fresh P. lobata root using differential centrifugation and characterized them via transmission electron microscopy, nanoscale particle sizing, ζ potential analysis, and biochemical assays. In Acute Alcoholism (AAI) mice pre-treated with P-ELNs, we evaluated their effects on the timing and duration of the loss of the righting reflex (LORR), liver alcohol metabolism enzymes activity, liver and serum alcohol content, and ferroptosis-related markers. Results: P-ELNs, enriched in proteins, lipids, and small RNAs, exhibited an ideal size (150.7 ± 82.8 nm) and negative surface charge (-31 mV). Pre-treatment with 10 mg/(kg.bw) P-ELNs in both male and female mice significantly prolonged ebriety time, shortened sobriety time, enhanced acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity while concurrently inhibited alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity, and reduced alcohol content in the liver and serum. Notably, P-ELNs demonstrated more efficacy compared to P-ELNs supernatant fluid (abundant puerarin content), suggesting alternative active components beyond puerarin. Additionally, P-ELNs prevented ferroptosis by inhibiting the reduction of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and reduced glutathione (GSH), and suppressing acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) elevation, thereby mitigating pathological liver lipid accumulation. Conclusion: P-ELNs exhibit distinct exosomal characteristics and effectively alleviate alcoholic intoxication, improve alcohol metabolism, suppress ferroptosis, and protect the liver from alcoholic injury. Consequently, P-ELNs hold promise as a therapeutic agent for detoxification, sobriety promotion, and prevention of alcoholic liver injury.

PURPOSE: To investigate clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with pneumococcal meningitis during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: In a Dutch prospective cohort, risk factors and clinical characteristics of pneumococcal meningitis episodes occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic (starting March 2020) were compared with those from baseline and the time afterwards. Outcomes were compared with an age-adjusted logistic regression model. RESULTS: We included 1,699 patients in 2006-2020, 50 patients in 2020-2021, and 182 patients in 2021-2023. After March 2020 relatively more alcoholism was reported (2006-2020, 6.1%; 2020-2021, 18%; 2021-2023, 9.7%; P = 0.002) and otitis-sinusitis was less frequently reported (2006-2020, 45%; 2020-2021, 22%; 2021-2023, 47%; P = 0.006). Other parameters, i.e. age, sex, symptom duration or initial C-reactive protein level, remained unaffected. Compared to baseline, lumbar punctures were more frequently delayed (on admission day, 2006-2020, 89%; 2020-2021, 74%; 2021-2022, 86%; P = 0.002) and outcomes were worse ('good recovery', 2020-2021, OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.3-0.8). CONCLUSION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, we observed worse outcomes in patients with pneumococcal meningitis. This may be explained by differing adherence to restrictions according to risk groups or by reduced health care quality.

Rhabdomyolysis is characterised by muscle breakdown and the release of myoglobin. It is a potentially serious condition that can lead to acute kidney injury (AKI). Factors, such as ischemia, trauma, muscle compression and drug toxicity, can trigger muscle breakdown. Treatment involves aggressive fluid resuscitation to maintain urine output and prevent renal injury. Severe cases with AKI may require temporary renal replacement therapy, such as haemodialysis. It has also been proposed that dialysis can speed up recovery by removing myoglobin that is secreted into the circulation by injured muscles. We present a case of a patient with alcohol abuse and prolonged immobility leading to severe rhabdomyolysis requiring hemodialysis. Our aim is to emphasise the importance of timely identification, and appropriate management of severe rhabdomyolysis not improving on fluids may require HD as soon as possible in order to minimise complications.

AIMS: This study aimed to test whether the alcohol harm paradox (AHP) is observed in Brazil by investigating (i) the association between educational attainment and alcohol-related consequences (ARC) and (ii) the contribution of average alcohol volume consumed (AVC), past-month heavy episodic drinking (HED), smoking, body mass index (BMI), and depression in accounting for the disparities in ARC. METHODS: We analysed data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey, a nationally representative household survey. The composite ARC outcome was considered present when an individual reported a past-year episode of activity failure, amnesia, and concern by others due to alcohol consumption. Adjusted binary logistic regression models were fitted using a hierarchical approach to calculate the odds ratios (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (CI), and to assess the contribution of each set of variables in attenuating the educational differences in ARC. RESULTS: Those from the lowest educational strata (incomplete elementary school) exhibited higher odds of ARC than their counterparts (OR: 2.03; 95% CI: 1.73-2.37). Although smoking, BMI, and depression attenuated the educational gradient (i.e. reduced the difference between reference and riskier categories) in ARC by ~13%, the adjustment for AVC and HED amplified inequalities by 0.3% and 5.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION: We found evidence of the AHP in Brazil. Educational inequalities in ARC were scarcely attenuated by behavioural factors, and a suppression effect was noted when adjusting for AVC and HED.

The use of psilocybin to treat alcohol use disorder is very promising, but the mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. We combined behavioral, pharmacological and gene expression analyses to decipher the mechanisms of action of psilocybin, for the first time injected into the brain. Male Long Evans rats underwent chronic operant ethanol self-administration before testing the effect of intraperitoneal psilocybin or directly within the nucleus accumbens core or the ventral tegmental area. Transcripts from the dopaminergic system were quantified in the nucleus accumbens and prefrontal cortex. Psilocybin significantly reduced (50%) ethanol self-administration when injected 4 hours before the session either intraperitoneally (1mg/kg) or directly within the left nucleus accumbens (0.15µg) but not the right nucleus accumbens or the left ventral tegmental area. The effect of intraperitoneal injection of psilocybin was prevented by intra left nucleus accumbens injection of 0.3µg of the 5-HT2AR antagonist ketanserin. In rats that self-administered ethanol but not in those self-administering saccharin, dopamine D2 receptor mRNA were increased in both the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex by psilocybin, while D1R mRNA was increased only in the prefrontal cortex. As in humans, psilocybin reduced ethanol self-administration in rats through the 5-HT2AR within the left nucleus accumbens possibly through increased D2R expression. Our results open unexpected perspectives regarding the hemispheric lateralization of psychedelic effects.

BACKGROUND: There is tremendous variation in both the prevalence of suicide and the factors that contribute to its occurrence across geographic locations, cultures, and time. Therefore, the present study aims to identify the various socio-demographic risk factors and psychosocial stressors using population data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The countries that were included in the study were based on data from the World Health Organization. We considered the top ten suicide countries and the ten lowest suicide nations. We searched five global databases for the most recent socio-demographic data and data on psychosocial stressors during the period of August and September 2022. We analyzed the correlation between suicide rates and various factors, and we considered a P value of less than 0.05 to be statistically significant. RESULTS: The correlation of suicide with sociodemographic factors like age (P 0.246), gender (male, P 0.357, and female, P 0.357), net enrolment rate (P 0.725), gender parity index (P 0.929), urban population percentage (P 0.571), marital status (male, P 0.345, and female, P 0.752), and literacy rate percentage (P 0.199) was not significant. The correlation of suicide with psychosocial stressors like unemployment percentage (P 0.552), alcoholism percentage (P 0.271), the prevalence of depression (P 0.523), the number of psychiatrists (P 0.605), the number of mental hospitals (r = -0.090, P 0.713), and the poverty rate percentage (P 0.538) were also not significant. CONCLUSION: Suicide is a major public health issue, yet global suicide data is scarce. Sociodemographic factors like age, urbanization, and literacy rate were negatively correlated, whereas psychosocial stressors like unemployment, alcohol misuse, and poverty were positively correlated, but none were significantly associated.

We previously reported that mice with low neuronal pH drink more alcohol, demonstrating the importance of pH for alcohol reward and motivation. In this study, we tested whether systemic pH affects alcohol consumption and if so, whether it occurs by changing the alcohol reward. C57BL/6J mice were given NaHCO3 to raise their blood pH, and the animals' alcohol consumption was measured in the drinking-in-the-dark and two-bottle free choice paradigms. Alcohol consumption was also assessed after suppressing the bitterness of NaHCO3 with sucrose. Alcohol reward was evaluated using a conditioned place preference. In addition, taste sensitivity was assessed by determining quinine and sucrose preference. The results revealed that a pH increase by NaHCO3 caused mice to decrease their alcohol consumption. The decrease in high alcohol contents (20%) was significant and observed at different ages, as well as in both males and females. Alcohol consumption was also decreased after suppressing NaHCO3 bitterness. Oral gavage of NaHCO3 did not alter quinine and sucrose preference. In the conditioned place preference, NaHCO3-treated mice spent less time in the alcohol-injected chamber. Conclusively, the results show that raising systemic pH with NaHCO3 decreases alcohol consumption, as it decreases the alcohol reward value.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are common in the general population and have been linked to alcohol misuse and abuse. However, much of this research has been undertaken in Western countries. To address this deficit, the current study examined the association between PLEs and problem drinking in the Japanese general population. METHODS: Data were used from 3717 adults (age 18-89) collected in an online survey in 2023. Information was obtained on PLEs with the PRIME Screen-Revised (PS-R), while problem drinking was assessed with the CAGE questionnaire (where a score of ≥ 2 was used to categorize cases). Logistic regression was used to examine the associations. RESULTS: Problem drinking was prevalent in the study sample (12.5%). In an analysis that was adjusted for sociodemographic factors, self-rated health, smoking status and depressive symptoms, PLEs were associated with significantly higher odds for problem drinking in the total sample (OR: 1.70, 95%CI: 1.13-2.55). In a sex-stratified analysis PLEs were not linked to problem drinking in men (OR: 1.16, 95%CI 0.68-2.00), whereas women with PLEs had over 2.8 times higher odds for problem drinking (OR: 2.83, 95%CI: 1.54-5.21). CONCLUSION: PLEs are associated with problem drinking in the Japanese general population and this association is especially pronounced in women. As problem drinking has been linked to a number of detrimental outcomes, future research should examine the potential effects of problem drinking in individuals with PLEs.

Given its detrimental effect on the brain, alcoholism is a severe disorder that can produce a variety of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral issues. Alcoholism is typically diagnosed using the CAGE assessment approach, which has drawbacks such as being lengthy, prone to mistakes, and biased. To overcome these issues, this paper introduces a novel paradigm for identifying alcoholism by employing electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The proposed framework is divided into various steps. To begin, interference and artifacts in the EEG data are removed using a multiscale principal component analysis procedure. This cleaning procedure contributes to information quality improvement. Second, an innovative graphical technique based on fast fractional Fourier transform coefficients is devised to visualize the chaotic character and complexities of the EEG signals. This elucidates the properties of regular and alcoholic EEG signals. Third, thirty-four graphical features are extracted to interpret the EEG signals' haphazard behavior and differentiate between regular and alcoholic trends. Fourth, we propose an ensembled feature selection method for obtaining an effective and reliable feature group. Following that, we study many neural network classifiers to choose the optimal classifier for building an efficient framework. The experimental findings show that the suggested method obtains the best classification performance by employing a recurrent neural network (RNN), with 97.5% accuracy, 96.7% sensitivity, and 98.3% specificity for the sixteen selected features. The proposed framework can aid physicians, businesses, and product designers to develop a real-time system.

Este artículo se basa en entrevistas semiestructuradasa profundidad en hombres de entre 30 y 70 años, conmás de 10 años en Alcohólicos Anónimos del Estado deTamaulipas, México. El objetivo fue reflexionar sobre lossignificados de la pérdida significativa de un ser querido yel alcoholismo. En la búsqueda del significado, se explicaque un factor que lleva al alcoholismo no es una sola pérdidasignificativa de personas queridas, sino un cúmulo tambiende pérdidas materiales y no materiales, se reflejaron recursoslimitados para afrontar las pérdidas, la relación entre lapérdida significativa con el alcoholismo fue mediado pordos principales aspectos, las creencias sobre los efectos queproduce el consumo de alcohol como formas de escapar de larealidad y las influencia de la familia al inicio del consumode alcohol. Por otra parte, la presencia de lo espiritual, laconciencia y las emociones que experimentan durante suproceso de duelo y alcoholismo, los llevó a identificar elproblema de la adicción, que permitió influir en el procesode rehabilitación.(AU)


A relação entre a perda significativa de um ente querido e oalcoolismo tem minimizado as implicações nos mecanismosde enfrentamento para gerar comportamentos saudáveis.Este artigo é baseado em entrevistas semiestruturadas emprofundidade com homens entre 30 e 70 anos, com mais de10 anos em Alcoólicos Anônimos no Estado de Tamaulipas,México. O objetivo foi refletir sobre os significados da perdasignificativa de um ente querido e do alcoolismo. Na buscade sentido, explica-se que um fator que leva ao alcoolismonão é uma única perda significativa de entes queridos, mastambém um acúmulo de perdas materiais e imateriais,recursos limitados foram refletidos para enfrentar as perdas,a relação entre a perda significativa com o alcoolismo foimediada por dois aspectos principais, as crenças sobre osefeitos que o consumo de álcool produz como formas defuga da realidade e a influência da família no início doconsumo de álcool. Por outro lado, a presença do espiritual,da consciência e das emoções que vivenciam durante oprocesso de luto e alcoolismo, levaram-nos a identificar oproblema da dependência, o que lhes permitiu influenciaro processo de reabilitação.(AU)


The relationship between the significant loss of a lovedone and alcoholism has minimized the implications oncoping mechanisms to generate healthy behaviors. Thisarticle is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews withmen between the ages of 30 and 70, with more than 10years in Alcoholics Anonymous in the State of Tamaulipas,Mexico. The objective was to reflect on the meanings of the significant loss of a loved one and alcoholism. In thesearch for meaning, it is explained that a factor that leadsto alcoholism is not a single significant loss of loved ones,but also an accumulation of material and non-materiallosses, limited resources were reflected to face the losses,the relationship between the loss significant with alcoholismwas mediated by two main aspects, beliefs about the effectsthat alcohol consumption produces as ways of escapingfrom reality and the influence of the family at the beginningof alcohol consumption. On the other hand, the presenceof the spiritual, the conscience and the emotions that theyexperience during their mourning process and alcoholism,led them to identify the problem of addiction, which allowedthem to influence the rehabilitation process.(AU)
