RESUMO

An Addendum to the AAPM's TG-51 protocol for the determination of absorbed dose to water is presented for electron beams with energies between 4 MeV and 22 MeV ( 1.70 cm ≤ R 50 ≤ 8.70 cm $1.70\nobreakspace {\rm cm} \le R_{\text{50}} \le 8.70\nobreakspace {\rm cm}$ ). This updated formalism allows simplified calibration procedures, including the use of calibrated cylindrical ionization chambers in all electron beams without the use of a gradient correction. New k Q $k_{Q}$ data are provided for electron beams based on Monte Carlo simulations. Implementation guidance is provided. Components of the uncertainty budget in determining absorbed dose to water at the reference depth are discussed. Specifications for a reference-class chamber in electron beams include chamber stability, settling, ion recombination behavior, and polarity dependence. Progress in electron beam reference dosimetry is reviewed. Although this report introduces some major changes (e.g., gradient corrections are implicitly included in the electron beam quality conversion factors), they serve to simplify the calibration procedure. Results for absorbed dose per linac monitor unit are expected to be up to approximately 2 % higher using this Addendum compared to using the original TG-51 protocol.

Functional liver parenchyma can be damaged from treatment of liver malignancies with 90Y selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT). Evaluating functional parenchymal changes and developing an absorbed dose (AD)-toxicity model can assist the clinical management of patients receiving SIRT. We aimed to determine whether there is a correlation between 90Y PET AD voxel maps and spatial changes in the nontumoral liver (NTL) function derived from dynamic gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI before and after SIRT. Methods: Dynamic gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI scans were acquired before and after treatment for 11 patients undergoing 90Y SIRT. Gadoxetic acid uptake rate (k1) maps that directly quantify spatial liver parenchymal function were generated from MRI data. Voxel-based AD maps, derived from the 90Y PET/CT scans, were binned according to AD. Pre- and post-SIRT k1 maps were coregistered to the AD map. Absolute and percentage k1 loss in each bin was calculated as a measure of loss of liver function, and Spearman correlation coefficients between k1 loss and AD were evaluated for each patient. Average k1 loss over the patients was fit to a 3-parameter logistic function based on AD. Patients were further stratified into subgroups based on lesion type, baseline albumin-bilirubin scores and alanine transaminase levels, dose-volume effect, and number of SIRT treatments. Results: Significant positive correlations (ρ = 0.53-0.99, P < 0.001) between both absolute and percentage k1 loss and AD were observed in most patients (8/11). The average k1 loss over 9 patients also exhibited a significant strong correlation with AD (ρ ≥ 0.92, P < 0.001). The average percentage k1 loss of patients across AD bins was 28%, with a logistic function model demonstrating about a 25% k1 loss at about 100 Gy. Analysis between patient subgroups demonstrated that k1 loss was greater among patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, higher alanine transaminase levels, larger fractional volumes of NTL receiving an AD of 70 Gy or more, and sequential SIRT treatments. Conclusion: Novel application of multimodality imaging demonstrated a correlation between 90Y SIRT AD and spatial functional liver parenchymal degradation, indicating that a higher AD is associated with a larger loss of local hepatocyte function. With the developed response models, PET-derived AD maps can potentially be used prospectively to identify localized damage in liver and to enhance treatment strategies.

Objective.In this work, we present and evaluate a technique for performing interface measurements of beta particle-emitting radiopharmaceutical therapy agents in solution.Approach.Unlaminated EBT3 film was calibrated for absorbed dose to water using a NIST matched x-ray beam. Custom acrylic source phantoms were constructed and placed above interfaces comprised of bone, lung, and water-equivalent materials. The film was placed perpendicular to these interfaces and measurements for absorbed dose to water using solutions of90Y and177Lu were performed and compared to Monte Carlo absorbed dose to water estimates simulated with EGSnrc. Surface and depth dose profile measurements were also performed.Main results.Surface absorbed dose to water measurements agreed with predicted results within 3.6% for177Lu and 2.2% for90Y. The agreement between predicted and measured absorbed dose to water was better for90Y than177Lu for depth dose and interface profiles. In general, agreement withink= 1 uncertainty bounds was observed for both radionuclides and all interfaces. An exception to this was found for the bone-to-water interface for177Lu due to the increased sensitivity of the measurements to imperfections in the material surfaces.Significance. This work demonstrates the feasibility and limitations of using radiochromic film for performing absorbed dose to water measurements on beta particle-emitting radiopharmaceutical therapy agents across material interfaces.

RESUMO

This study aimed to carry out the preclinical studies of [89Zr]Zr-DFO-Bevacizumab. The radiolabeled compound was prepared with radiochemical purity >99% (ITLC), and a specific activity of 74 GBq/g. Cellular studies indicated the great capability of [89Zr]Zr-DFO-Bevacizumab for binding to SKOV3 cell lines. High accumulation was observed in the tumor. The liver and spleen received the highest absorbed dose with 1.12 and 0.72 mGy/MBq, respectively. This radiopharmaceutical can be considered as a suitable PET agent for VEGF-expressing ovarian cancer imaging.

[177Lu]Lu-DOTATATE has been approved for progressive and inoperable gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) that overexpress somatostatin receptors. The absorbed doses by limiting organs and tumors can be quantified by serial postinfusion scintigraphy measurements of the γ-emissions from 177Lu. The objective of this work was to explore how postinfusion [177Lu]Lu-DOTATATE dosimetry could influence clinical management by predicting treatment efficacy (tumor shrinkage and survival) and toxicity. Methods: Patients with GEP-NETs treated with [177Lu]Lu-DOTATATE between 2016 and 2022 and who underwent dosimetry were included. Absorbed doses were calculated for healthy organs (liver, kidneys, bone marrow, and spleen) and tumors using PLANET Dose and the local energy deposition method based on serial posttreatment SPECT/CT. Up to 5 lesions per site were selected and measured on images collected at baseline and 3 mo after treatment end (measurement masked to the somatostatin receptor imaging uptake). For toxicity assessment, laboratory parameters were regularly monitored. Clinical data, including time to death or progression, were collected from the patients' health records. Correlations between absorbed doses by organs and toxicity and between absorbed doses by lesions and tumor volume variation were studied using regression models. Results: In total, 35 dosimetric studies were performed in patients with mostly grade 2 (77%) tumors and metastases in liver (89%), lymph nodes (77%), and bone (34%), and 146 lesions were analyzed: 1-9 lesions per patient, mostly liver metastases (65%) and lymph nodes (25%). The median total absorbed dose by tumors was 94.4 Gy. The absorbed doses by tumors significantly decreased between cycles. The absorbed dose by tumors was significantly associated with tumor volume variation (P < 0.001) 3 mo after treatment end, and it was a significant prognostic factor for survival. Toxicity analysis showed a correlation between the decrease of hematologic parameters such as lymphocytes or platelet concentrations and the absorbed doses by the spleen or bone marrow. The mean absorbed dose by the kidneys was not correlated with nephrotoxicity during the studied period. Conclusion: In patients treated with [177Lu]Lu-DOTATATE for GEP-NETs, tumor and healthy organ dosimetry can predict survival and toxicities, thus influencing clinical management.

PURPOSE: The accuracy of dose delivery to all patients treated with medical linacs depends on the accuracy of beam calibration. Dose delivery cannot be any more accurate than this. Given the importance of this, it seems worthwhile taking another look at the expected uncertainty in TG-51 photon dose calibration and a first look at electron calibration. This work builds on the 2014 addendum to TG-51 for photons and adds to it by also considering electrons. In that publication, estimates were made of the uncertainty in the dose calibration. In this paper, we take a deeper look at this important issue. METHODS: The methodology used here is more rigorous than previous determinations as it is based on Monte Carlo simulation of uncertainties. It is assumed that mechanical QA has been performed following TG-142 prior to beam calibration and that there are no uncertainties that exceed the tolerances specified by TG-142. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Despite the different methodology and assumptions, the estimated uncertainty in photon beam calibration is close to that in the addendum. The careful user should be able to easily reach a 95% confidence interval (CI) of ± 2.3% for photon beam calibration with standard instrumentation. For electron beams calibrated with a Farmer chamber, the estimated uncertainties are slightly larger, and the 95% CI is ±2.6% for 6 MeV and slightly smaller than this for 18 MeV. There is no clear energy dependence in these results. It is unlikely that the user will be able to improve on these uncertainties as the dominant factor in the uncertainty resides in the ion chamber dose calibration factor N D , w 60 Co $N_{D,w}^{{}^{60}{\mathrm{Co}}}$ . For both photons and electrons, reduction in the ion chamber depth uncertainty below about 0.5 mm and SSD uncertainty below 1 mm have almost no effect on the total dose uncertainty, as uncertainties beyond the user's control totally dominate under these circumstances.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow toxicity in advanced prostate cancer patients who receive [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 is a well-known concern. In early stage patients; e.g. low volume metastatic hormone sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) patients, prevention of late bone marrow toxicity is even more crucial due to longer life expectancy. To date, bone marrow dosimetry is primarily performed using blood sampling. This method is time consuming and does not account for possible active bone marrow uptake. Therefore other methodologies are investigated. We calculated the bone marrow absorbed dose for [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 in mHSPC patients using SPECT/CT imaging and compared it to the blood sampling method as reference. METHODS: Eight mHSPC patients underwent two cycles (3 and 6 GBq) of [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 therapy. After each cycle, five time point (1 h, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 7 days) SPECT/CT was performed at kidney level. Bone marrow dosimetry was performed using commercial software by drawing ten 1.5 cm diameter spheres in the lowest ten vertebrae to determine the time-integrated activity. Simplified protocols using only 2 imaging time points and 3 vertebrae were also compared. Blood-based dosimetry was based on the blood sampling method according to the EANM guideline. RESULTS: Mean bone marrow absorbed dose was significantly different (p < 0.01) for the imaging based method (25.4 ± 8.7 mGy/GBq) and the blood based method (17.2 ± 3.4 mGy/GBq), with an increasing absorbed dose ratio between both methods over time. Bland Altman analysis of both simplification steps showed that differences in absorbed dose were all within the 95% limits of agreement. CONCLUSION: This study showed that bone marrow absorbed dose after [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 can be determined using an imaging-based method of the lower vertebrae, and simplified using 2 time points (1 and 7 days) and 3 vertebrae. An increasing absorbed dose ratio over time between the imaging-based method and blood-based method suggests that there might be specific bone marrow binding of [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617.

Objective. This work introduces a novel approach to performing active and passive dosimetry for beta-emitting radionuclides in solution using common dosimeters. The measurements are compared to absorbed dose to water (Dw) estimates from Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We present a method for obtaining absorbed dose to water, measured with dosimeters, from beta-emitting radiopharmaceutical agents using a custom SPECT/CT compatible phantom for validation of Monte Carlo based absorbed dose to water estimates.Approach. A cylindrical, acrylic SPECT/CT compatible phantom capable of housing an IBA EFD diode, Exradin A20-375 parallel plate ion chamber, unlaminated EBT3 film, and thin TLD100 microcubes was constructed for the purpose of measuring absorbed dose to water from solutions of common beta-emitting radiopharmaceutical therapy agents. The phantom is equipped with removable detector inserts that allow for multiple configurations and is designed to be used for validation of image-based absorbed dose estimates with detector measurements. Two experiments with131I and one experiment with177Lu were conducted over extended measurement intervals with starting activities of approximately 150-350 MBq. Measurement data was compared to Monte Carlo simulations using the egs_chamber user code in EGSnrc 2019.Main results. Agreement withink= 1 uncertainty between measured and MC predictedDwwas observed for all dosimeters, except the A20-375 ion chamber during the second131I experiment. Despite the agreement, the measured values were generally lower than predicted values by 5%-15%. The uncertainties atk = 1 remain large (5%-30% depending on the dosimeter) relative to other forms of radiation therapy.Significance. Despite high uncertainties, the overall agreement between measured and simulated absorbed doses is promising for the use of dosimeter-based RPT measurements in the validation of MC predictedDw.

INTRODUCTION: Concerns regarding the adverse consequences of radiation have increased due to the expanded application of computed tomography (CT) in medical practice. Certain studies have indicated that the radiation dosage depends on the anatomical region, the imaging technique employed and patient-specific variables. The aim of this study is to present fitting models for the estimation of age-specific dose estimates (ASDE), in the same direction of size-specific dose estimates, and effective doses based on patient age, gender and the type of CT examination used in paediatric head, chest and abdomen-pelvis imaging. METHODS: A total of 583 paediatric patients were included in the study. Radiometric data were gathered from DICOM files. The patients were categorised into five distinct groups (under 15 years of age), and the effective dose, organ dose and ASDE were computed for the CT examinations involving the head, chest and abdomen-pelvis. Finally, the best fitting models were presented for estimation of ASDE and effective doses based on patient age, gender and the type of examination. RESULTS: The ASDE in head, chest, and abdomen-pelvis CT examinations increases with increasing age. As age increases, the effective dose in head and abdomen-pelvis CT scans decreased. However, for chest scans, the effective dose initially showed a decreasing trend until the first year of life; after that, it increases in correlation with age. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the presented fitting model for the ASDE, these CT scan quantities depend on factors such as patient age and the type of CT examination. For the effective dose, the gender was also included in the fitting model. By utilising the information about the scan type, region and age, it becomes feasible to estimate the ASDE and effective dose using the models provided in this study.

In this study, Ibandronate as a third generation of bisphosphonates was labeled with rhenium-188 radionuclide. Production and quality control of 188Re-IBA radiopharmaceutical was investigated. The radiation absorbed dose of this radiopharmaceutical was evaluated for adult male based on biodistribution data in mice using the RADAR and Sparks and Aydogan methodologies. The 188Re-IBA was produced with more than 96% radiochemical purity. The highest value of %ID/g was related to bone with 7.11% at 12 h post-injection. About 48% of injected activity was cumulated on the surface of bone tissue 48 h post-injection. The imaging studies confirmed the biodistribution pattern. Radiation absorbed doses of red bone marrow and osteogenic cells were estimated to about 0.39 and 0.71 mGy MBq-1, respectively. The maximum administrated activity was obtained 73.1 MBq kg-1 (2.0 mCi kg-1) of body weight. Effective dose was evaluated about 0.09 mSv MBq-1. The results were compared with other clinically used bone pain palliation radiopharmaceuticals. It was concluded that the 188Re-IBA radiopharmaceutical has a great tendency to be absorbed in bone tissue and it can provide sufficient care for bone marrow ablation with low undesired dose to other normal organs.

The Kanyakumari coast is known to be a high background natural radiation area due to the placer deposits of heavy minerals such as ilmenite, monazite, and rutile. The Kanyakumari river sediments that could be the source of the elevated amounts of natural radionuclides in the coastal sands have been studied in this paper. The activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were determined using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry. The mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were found to be 75 Bq kg-1, 565 Bq kg-1, and 360 Bq kg-1, respectively. The mean absorbed dose rate was 395 nGy h-1. Radiological hazard parameters were studied and compared with the world average values. The contribution of 232Th to the total dose rate was found to be higher than that of the two other radionuclides. The high mean ratio of 232Th/226Ra suggested an enrichment of 232Th and the occurrence of 226Ra leaching due to an oxidizing environment. Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out for the radionuclides in order to discriminate the source of the sediments. This study provides new insights into the distribution of natural radionuclides in sediments of rivers and streams.

The use of radiopharmaceuticals has gained a special place in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers and evaluation of the function of different organs of the body. In this study, the absorbed dose distribution of organs after injection of 188Re-Mu-9 has been investigated using MIRD method and MCNP-4C simulation code. The 188Re-Mu-9 labeled was injected the mouse body and the amount of 188Re-labeled accumulation was evaluated after 1, 4 and 2 4 h. Having a map of the distribution of radiopharmaceutical activity in the animal body, it is possible to convert it into a human model to obtain the internal dose received by 188Re-Mu-9 injection using the MIRD calculation method and the MCNP simulation code. According to the results of the study, the animal/human model can be acceptable method for dose estimation of antibody-based radiopharmaceuticals.

BACKGROUND: Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE has shown efficacy in patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). Personalised dosimetry is crucial to optimise treatment outcomes and minimise adverse events. In this study, we investigated the correlation between the tumour-absorbed dose (TAD) estimated from [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE SPECT/CT and the therapeutic response. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with advanced well-differentiated NETs grades 1-3 who underwent PRRT and exhibited greater uptake than liver on pre-therapeutic [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-TOC PET/CT. Target lesions were selected based on the RECIST 1.1 and PERCIST 1.0 criteria using [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE SPECT/CT and pre-therapeutic contrast-enhanced CT scans. For anatomical image analysis, the sum of the longest diameter (SLD) of the target lesions was measured using the RECIST 1.1 criteria for patient-based analysis and the longest diameter (LD) of the target lesion using the RECIST-L criteria for lesion-based analysis. Standardised uptake values (SUVs) were measured on SPECT/CT images, and TADs were calculated based on the SUVs. Dosimetry was performed using a single SPECT/CT imaging time point at day 4-5 post-therapy. Statistical analyses were conducted to investigate correlations and determine the target lesion responses. RESULTS: Twenty patients with primary tumour sites and hepatic metastases were included. Fifty-five target lesions, predominantly located in the pancreas and liver, were analysed. The cumulative TAD (lesion-based analysis: r = 0.299-0.301, p = 0.025-0.027), but not the cycle 1 SUV (lesion-based analysis: r = 0.198-0.206, p = 0.131-0.147) or cycle 1 TAD (lesion-based analysis: r = 0.209-0.217, p = 0.112-0.126), exhibited a significant correlation with the change in LD of the target lesion. Binary logistic regression analysis identified the significance of the cumulative TAD in predicting disease control according to the RECIST-L criteria (odds ratio = 1.031-1.051, p = 0.024-0.026). CONCLUSIONS: The cumulative TAD estimated from [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE SPECT/CT revealed a significant correlation with change in LD, which was significantly higher for the cumulative TAD than for the cycle 1 SUV or TAD. A higher cumulative TAD was associated with disease control in the target lesion. However, considering the limitations inherent to a confined sample size, careful interpretation of these findings is required. Estimation of the cumulative TAD of [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE therapy could guide the platform towards personalised therapy.

Terrestrial gamma radiation is one of the major outdoor radiation exposures to the general public that varies substantially based on the type and geological properties of the soil. The objective of this study is to evaluate the naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) distribution and assess the hazard parameters in the riverbank soil within various industrial zones in the densely populated Dhaka and Chattogram cities of Bangladesh. The mean activities of 226Ra (37 ± 3), 232Th (58 ± 4), and 40K (1129 ± 18) Bqkg-1 in the assessed soil samples were found to be slightly higher than the world average values 32, 35, and 420 Bqkg-1, respectively. The mean radium equivalent activity (207.49 Bqkg-1) and the external and internal hazard indices were within the recommended limits of 370 Bqkg-1 and <1, respectively. The mean absorbed dose rate (99.47 nGyhr-1), annual effective dose (0.12 mSva-1), ELCR (4.27 × 10-4), and gamma level index (1.58) exceeded the world average values 59 nGyhr-1, 0.07 mSva-1, 2.9 × 10-4, and 1 respectively. However, the studied areas are safe from a radiological viewpoint with no radiation health hazard to the people. The results of this study can be utilized to produce factual baseline data for future studies.

Electron driven chemistry of biomolecules in aqueous phase presents the realistic picture to study molecular processes. In this study we have investigated the interactions of electrons with the DNA constituents in their aqueous phase in order to obtain the quantities useful for DNA damage assessment. We have computed the inelastic mean free path (IMFP), mass stopping power (MSP) and absorbed dose (D) for the DNA constituents (Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, Thymine and Uracil) in the aqueous medium from ionisation threshold to 5000 eV. We have modified complex optical potential formalism to include band gap of the systems to calculate inelastic cross sections which are used to estimate these entities. This is the maiden attempt to report these important quantities for the aqueous DNA constituents. We have compared our results with available data in gas and other phase and have observed explicable accord for IMFP and MSP. Since these are the first results of absorbed dose (D) for these compounds, we have explored present results vis-a-vis dose absorption in water.

BACKGROUND: Our previous work introduced and evaluated a standard for surface absorbed dose rate per unit radioactivity to water from unsealed alpha-emitting radionuclides used in targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT). An overall uncertainty over 4.0% at k = 1 was reported for the absorbed dose to air measurements, which was partially attributed to the rotational alignment uncertainty in the geometrical setup. PURPOSE: A printed circuit board (PCB) with a segmented guard was constructed to align the extrapolation chamber (EC) and the source plates using a differential capacitance technique. The PCB EC aimed to enhance the repeatability of the ionization current measurements. The PCB EC was evaluated using a thin film 210Po source. The measured absorbed dose to air cavity was compared with the Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. Using the extrapolation method, the surface absorbed dose rate to water was calculated. METHODS: The PCB EC was constructed with a 4.50 mm diameter collector surrounded by four sectors and a guard electrode. The sectors were isolated for rotational alignment and later connected to the guard for ionization current measurements. A bridge circuit measured differential capacitance between opposing sectors, and a hexapod motion stage rotated the source substrate to minimize the differential capacitance. The EC was evaluated using a 210Po source with a 3.20 mm diameter and 1.253 µ $\mu $ Ci radioactivity. MC simulations were performed to calculate the k p o i n t ${k}_{point}$ , k b a c k s c a t t e r ${k}_{backscatter}$ , and k d i v ${k}_{div}$ correction factors. Ionization current measurements were performed for air gaps in the 0.3-0.525 mm range and surface absorbed dose rate to water was calculated. RESULTS: Rotational offsets of up to 3.0° were found and the current repeatability was found to increase with the absorbed dose to air uncertainty calculated to be ∼2.0%. Using the capacitance method, the effective EC diameter was measured to be 4.53 mm. The recombination, polarity, and electrometer corrections were reported to be within 1.00% across all measurement trials. The MC-calculated correction factors were calculated to be much larger than the recombination and polarity correction factors. The average k p o i n t ${k}_{point}$ , k b a c k s c a t t e r ${k}_{backscatter}$ , and k d i v ${k}_{div}$ corrections were calculated to be 1.063, 0.9402, and 2.136, respectively. The MC-calculated absorbed dose to air was found to overestimate the absorbed dose by over 4.00% when compared with the measured absorbed dose to air. The surface absorbed dose rate to water was calculated to be 2.304 × 10 - 6 $2.304 \times {10}^{ - 6}$ Gy/s/Bq with an overall uncertainty of 4.07%. CONCLUSIONS: The constructed PCB EC was deemed suitable as an absorbed dose standard. A repeatable rotational alignment was achieved using the differential capacitance technique. The metal electrodes on the PCB made a difference of < 1.00% on the backscatter correction when compared to the EC comprised of polystyrene-equivalent collector. A 20% difference in the surface absorbed dose rate to water was found between the two ECs, which is attributed to the cavity diameter differences leading to different magnitudes of dose fall-off along the lateral direction.

Three-dimensional imaging methods are widely used for evaluation of bony changes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Besides, lateral and posterio-anterior TMJ projections in both closed- and open-jaw positions for each temporomandibular joint are used as two-dimensional diagnostic tools. The purpose of the present study was to compare effective and mean organ absorbed doses of plain radiography techniques with those of different modalities of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning of an adult's temporomandibular joint. PCXMC 2.0 software was used to calculate mean organ and effective doses. A NewTom CBCT device (Newtom 5G XL; QR systems; Verona, Italy) was simulated at 360° rotation using a 6 × 6 cm2 FOV in standard and high-resolution modes. Lateral and posterio-anterior TMJ plain projections were simulated according to recommendations of the manufacturer of the Planmeca ProMax® 2D S3 device. Doses for both projections were simulated with Monte Carlo methods and the International Commission on radiological protection adult reference computational phantoms. The highest mean organ absorbed doses occurred in bone surfaces, salivary glands, and skull for posterio-anterior TMJ and lateral TMJ, and for CBCT scanning in all examinations. The effective doses of posterio-anterior and lateral TMJ plain radiographs were found to be higher than those of the Standard Mode-Eco Scan CBCT. Therefore, the lowest effective dose was calculated in Standard Mode-Eco Scan CBCT. It is concluded that NewTom 5G XL Standard Mode-Eco Scan CBCT can be used instead of plain radiographs (lateral and posterio-anterior TMJ) in temporomandibular joint imaging as it allows visualizing the three-dimensional structure of the temporomandibular joint as an advantage.

This study aimed to evaluate natural radioactivity levels and hazards of radionuclides 232Th, 226Ra and 40K in soil samples taken from 15 locations in the Lega Dembi gold mining, Oromia, Ethiopia, using gamma-ray spectroscopy coupled with an HPGe detector. It was observed that the respective mean specific activities for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K determined in the mining site were 23.87 ± 0.7, 52.5 ± 1.8 and 391.62 ± 11.35 Bq/kg, and 8.89 ± 0.4, 13.83 ± 0.6 and 423.68 ± 9.5 Bq/kg in the living areas. The specific activity of 232Th was above the permissive limit in the mining site, while for 226Ra and 40K were within the limit. The specific activity of 40K in the living area was observed to be above the permissive limit. The calculated value of radiation hazards parameters; radium equivalent activity (Raeq), internal and external hazards indices (Hin) and (Hex), the mean annual effective dose (AED), and gamma representative indices (Iγ) were within permissively limit. The mean absorbed dose rate in the mining site was above the recommended safety limit. The total annual gonadal dose equivalent value was found to be 494.8 ± 8.7 µSv/a in the mining site. This value was also above the permissively.

Two DOSimetry TELescopes (DOSTELs) have been measuring the radiation environment in the Columbus module of the International Space Station (ISS) since 2009 in the frame of the DOSIS and DOSIS 3D projects. Both instruments have measured the charged particle flux rate and dose rates in a telescope geometry of two planar silicon detectors. The radiation environment in the ISS orbit is mostly composed by galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) and its secondary radiation and protons from the inner radiation belt in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) with sporadic contributions of solar energetic particles at high latitudes. The data presented in this work cover two solar activity minima and corresponding GCR intensity maxima in 2009 and 2020 and the solar activity maximum and corresponding GCR intensity minimum in 2014/2015. Average dose rates measured in the Columbus laboratory in the ISS orbit from GCR and SAA are presented separately. The data is analyzed with respect to the effective magnetic shielding and grouped into different cut-off rigidity intervals. Using only measurements in magnetically unshielded regions at low cut-off rigidity and applying a factor for the geometrical shielding of the Earth, absorbed dose rates and dose equivalent rates in near-Earth interplanetary space are estimated for the years 2009 to 2022.
