BACKGROUND: Pediatric patients with kidney failure often experience cognitive delays. However, academic delay (being more than one grade level below age-appropriate grade, or in special education) after pediatric kidney transplantation (KTx) has not been explored. We sought to identify patient characteristics associated with a higher risk of academic delay 1 year post-KTx. METHODS: We used the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database to identify children aged 6-17 years who received a primary KTx between 2014 and 2021 and had a functioning graft 1 year after KTx. The primary outcome was the patient's academic progress at 1 year post-transplant. The secondary outcome was change in academic progress between transplant and 1-year follow-up: onset of new delay, resolution of pre-existing delay, persistence of delay, or no delay at either timepoint. Binomial and multinomial mixed effects logistic regression models were used to predict each outcome based on patient characteristics. RESULTS: The study included 2197 patients, of whom 14% demonstrated academic delay at 1 year post-KTx, 4% demonstrated a new onset of academic delay, 5% demonstrated a resolution of academic delay, and 10% demonstrated persistent academic delay. Patients undergoing transplantation at a younger age, receiving a deceased donor kidney, experiencing longer waitlist times, and undergoing KTx for vascular or other disease indications for KTx were more likely to experience academic delays, including new-onset academic delays. CONCLUSIONS: Academic delays are frequently reported among pediatric KTx recipients. Additional academic support may help resolving or preventing academic delay for at-risk subgroups of children undergoing KTx.

RESUMO

The discipline development is the pillar for the development of traditional Chinese medicine( TCM). The academic progress in TCM is the commanding height of the discipline development of TCM. To lead and promote the development and academic progress of TCM, the China Association of Chinese Medicine has summarized the Top Ten Academic Achievements in Traditional Chinese Medicine during 2020-2022, the Major Scientific Problems, Engineering Technical Problems, and Industrial Technical Problems in Traditional Chinese Medicine during 2019-2023, and the Remarkable Research Achievements of Traditional Chinese Medicine during 2012-2022. Based on the above research reports and the research achievements awarded the national science and technology prizes in TCM in the last 20 years and according to the current situation and layout of TCM discipline development, this paper reviews the major research achievements of TCM in the last two decades and the latest research progress in TCM during 2020-2023. The major scientific, engineering technical, and industrial technical problems in TCM are analyzed and the emerging trends of TCM are prospected in accordance with the development laws and characteristics of TCM. This review provides new ideas and reference for the high-quality development of TCM in the new era.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to examine the impact of using the MOODLE e-learning platform in ideological and political education on Chinese students' motivation and academic performance. METHODS: The study involved 447 students from China-based universities (the experimental group - 232 students who studied using electronic educational platforms, and the control group - 215 students who used no digital technologies in their learning). The following methods were used: Measuring the need to achieve success among students; T. I. Ilyina's method for studying motivation to study at university; Method for studying student success motivation; Method for studying the motives of students' educational activities; Method for determining the main motives for choosing a profession (E. M. Pavlyutenkov); Motivation of learning activities: Levels and types (I. S. Dombrovskaya). Students' academic performance was assessed by testing in the studied disciplines at the beginning and end of the study. RESULTS: As a result, the significance of the motivational component in achieving the success of ideological and political education and the impact on students' motivation to use e-learning platforms is theoretically substantiated. CONCLUSIONS: It has been confirmed that using e-learning platforms in ideological and political education helps increase student motivation and academic performance.

BACKGROUND: Dropout and poor academic performance are persistent problems in medical schools in emerging economies. Identifying at-risk students early and knowing the factors that contribute to their success would be useful for designing educational interventions. Educational Data Mining (EDM) methods can identify students at risk of poor academic progress and dropping out. The main goal of this study was to use machine learning models, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Naïve Bayes (NB), to identify first year medical students that succeed academically, using sociodemographic data and academic history. METHODS: Data from seven cohorts (2011 to 2017) of admitted medical students to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) Faculty of Medicine in Mexico City were analysed. Data from 7,976 students (2011 to 2017 cohorts) of the program were included. Information from admission diagnostic exam results, academic history, sociodemographic characteristics and family environment was used. The main dataset included 48 variables. The study followed the general knowledge discovery process: pre-processing, data analysis, and validation. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Naïve Bayes (NB) models were used for data mining analysis. RESULTS: ANNs models had slightly better performance in accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Both models had better sensitivity when classifying regular students and better specificity when classifying irregular students. Of the 25 variables with highest predictive value in the Naïve Bayes model, percentage of correct answers in the diagnostic exam was the best variable. CONCLUSIONS: Both ANN and Naïve Bayes methods can be useful for predicting medical students' academic achievement in an undergraduate program, based on information of their prior knowledge and socio-demographic factors. Although ANN offered slightly superior results, Naïve Bayes made it possible to obtain an in-depth analysis of how the different variables influenced the model. The use of educational data mining techniques and machine learning classification techniques have potential in medical education.

BackgroundIn order to implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the Opinions on Promoting the Inheritance, Innovation and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), to regularly summarize the research results of TCM, to present the academic progress of TCM dynamically, and to give full play to the academic leadership of academic groups, the China Association of Chinese Medicine had organized the selection of the top 10 academic progress of TCM in 2022. The selection work adhered to the four orientations, eliminated the four only, highlighted the solution of clinical problems, answered scientific questions, led the development of the industry, reflected the exploratory and forward-looking, innovative and breakthrough, focused on new laws, new discoveries, new methods, new products, new theories in the field of basic research and applied basic research in TCM. After dynamic collection, preliminary examination, review and final judgment, the top 10 academic progress of TCM in 2022 were determined.

In recent years, enteral and parenteral nutrition has seen vigorous development, and relevant diagnosis and treatment system in clinical nutrition has been further improved. The updates of nutrition guidelines and consensus for different disease categories and different populations are conducive to guiding the comprehensive development of clinical diagnosis and treatment. With the focus on "medical nutrition, standardization and innovation", here we presented the latest progress on clinical nutrition under diverse clinical settings, including neurology, hepatology, nephrology, geriatrics, surgery, oncology, pediatrics, pharmacy, etc., comprehensively covering the basic research, clinical research, the latest guideline consensus, treatment strategy, disease management and other perspectives.

Food insecurity means having limited or uncertain access, in socially acceptable ways, to an adequate and safe food supply. Ample evidence has identified college students as vulnerable to this problem, but little research has focused on freshmen. This cross-sectional study examined family and campus food insecurity among freshmen at a university in Appalachia. An online questionnaire contained sociodemographic items and scales that measured food security status, academic progress, coping strategies for accessing food, and social support. T-tests and Chi square analyses compared food insecure and food secure students. Statistical significance was p < .05. Participants were 456 freshmen, 118 males (26%) and 331 females (73%). Family and campus food insecurity were experienced by 32 (7.1%) and 98 (21.5%) of the freshmen, respectively, and 42.5% of those who experienced campus food insecurity believed their food access had worsened since starting college. Family and campus coping strategies, respectively, included stretching food (72.9 vs. 18.4%) and purchasing cheap, processed food (68.8 vs. 16.3%). Food secure students scored significantly higher on self-rated measures of academic progress (p < .01), and greater proportions of food secure students (60.7 vs. 43.9%, p < .01) perceived their eating habits since starting college as "healthy/very healthy," and perceived their health status as "good/excellent" (86.0 vs. 71.4%, p < .01). Students requested assistance with job opportunities (19.4%), affordable meal plans (18.4%), money management (13.3%), and eating healthy (11.2%). Findings suggest that college student food insecurity begins during the freshmen year, and that there is a need for campus and community-based interventions to increase food access among these freshmen and their families.

Abstract The aim of this study is to analyze the dimensionality of the Spanish version of the Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R), to examine the relationship between psychological well-being and dispositional optimism/pessimism in a sample of college students (n = 291), as well as to consider the effect of dispositional optimism/pessimism on academic progress. The results indicated that the properties of the Spanish version of the LOT-R (a= .72) were very similar to the original. The questionnaire clearly presented two partially independent factors, and the items assessing optimism demonstrated greater discriminant validity than the items assessing pessimism. Optimism was positively linked to psychological well-being and negatively related to psychological-distress. In the male students, a certain degree of preoccupation about academic results was linked to progress in studies, while excessive worry about academic progress could obstruct the successful completion of studies in the female students. These results suggest that the LOT-R can be used as a reliable and valid tool for the analysis of optimism and its positive effects on health and academic progress.


Resumen Este estudio pretende analizar la dimensionalidad de la versión española del Revised Life Orientation Test, para examinar la relación entre el bienestar psicológico y el optimismo/pesimismo disposicional en una muestra de estudiantes universitarios (n = 291) y analizar la repercusión del optimismo/pesimismo disposicional en el progreso académico. Los resultados indican que las propiedades de la versión española del Revised Life Orientation Test (a = 0.72) son muy similares a los de la versión original. El test presenta una estructura clara con dos factores parcialmente independientes, los ítems del factor optimismo tienen un poder discriminatorio mayor que los del factor de pesimismo. El optimismo está relacionado positivamente con el bienestar psicológico y negativamente con el malestar psicológico. En hombres, cierto grado de preocupación por los resultados académicos estaría relacionado con el progreso académico en los estudios, mientras que en mujeres, una excesiva preocupación académica podría ser perjudicial para finalizar con éxito los estudios. Estos resultados sugieren que el Revised Life Orientation Test puede ser un instrumento fiable y válido para analizar el optimismo y su relación con la salud y progreso académico.

[Objective] To understand Chinese scholars in different periods on the different understanding of tongue, for further development of research and provide a theoretical basis. [Method] Access to a large number of ancient books and literature, selection and tongue of related articles, extract and summa-rize the main points. [Result] The ancient understanding of TCM tongue is very knowledgeable, and by the subjective leading generation, does not have the scientific rigour;modern research of Chinese medicine tongue is mainly from the tongue and tongue color, tongue shape and other aspects, the objec-tive diagnosis and analysis system, the research methods of modern TCM tongue with scientific rigor modern Chinese Medicine; from the point of view, different degrees of col aterals and the width of the color purple tongue, sublingual y reflect the progress of the blood stasis degree and disease conditions, different diseases have different characteristics of the tongue. [Conclusion] Research on the development of modern tongue made certain contribution to TCM development.
