BACKGROUND: Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a global public health concern. Pertussis vaccines have demonstrated good protection against Bordetella pertussis infections, but their effectiveness against Bordetella parapertussis remains debated due to conflicting study outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess the effectiveness of pertussis vaccines in protecting children against B. parapertussis infection. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases was conducted, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies that met inclusion criteria were included in the analysis. RESULTS: The meta-analysis, involving 46,533 participants, revealed no significant protective effect of pertussis vaccination against B. parapertussis infection (risk ratio: 1.10, 95% confidence interval: 0.83 to 1.44). Subgroup analyses by vaccine type and study design revealed no significant protection. The dearth of recent data and a limited pool of eligible studies, particularly RCTs, underscore a critical gap that warrants future research in the domain. CONCLUSIONS: These findings offer crucial insights into the lack of effectiveness of pertussis vaccines against B. parapertussis. Given the rising incidence of cases and outbreaks, coupled with the lack of cross-protection by the existing vaccines, there is an urgent need to develop vaccines that include specific antigens to protect against B. parapertussis.

OBJECTIVES: In Finland, whole cell pertussis vaccine (wP) was introduced in 1952 and was replaced by acellular pertussis vaccine (aP) without fimbrial (FIM) antigen in 2005. We aimed to analyse the changes in serotypes of circulating Bordetella pertussis before and after acellular vaccination and to explore the relationship between biofilm formation and serotype diversity after the introduction of aP vaccine. METHODS: Serotyping of 1399 B. pertussis isolates collected at the Finnish National Reference Laboratory for Pertussis and Diphtheria in Turku, Finland, from 1974 to 2023 was performed by slide agglutination or indirect ELISA. Of 278 isolates collected after 2005, 53 were selected, genotyped for fim3 and fim2 alleles, and tested for biofilm formation. The selection criteria included maintaining a relatively equal distribution of isolates per time interval, ensuring approximately a 50:50 ratio of FIM2 (N = 26) and FIM3 (N = 27) serotypes. The reference strain Tohama I was used as a control. RESULTS: During the wP era, the majority of circulating B. pertussis exhibited the FIM2 serotype. However, FIM3 strains have appeared since 1999 and become prevalent. After the implementation of aP vaccines, the distribution of serotypes has exhibited substantial variability. FIM3 isolates displayed an enhanced biofilm formation compared to FIM2 isolates (Geometric mean value (95% CI): 0.90 (0.79-1.03) vs. 0.75 (0.65-0.85); p < 0.05). Of the 27 FIM3 isolates, 8 harboured fim3-1 and 19 fim3-2 alleles. FIM3 isolates with fim3-2 allele were significantly associated with increased biofilm formation when compared to those with fim3-1 (1.07 (0.96-1.19) vs. 0.61 (0.52-0.72); p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Following the implementation of aP vaccines, the distribution of serotypes in Finland has exhibited substantial variability. FIM3 isolates with the fim3-2 allele displayed an enhanced biofilm formation capability compared to FIM2 isolates.

The objective was to determine if antigen-specific tissue resident memory T (TRM) cells persist in respiratory tissues of adults immunized as children with whole cell pertussis (wP) or acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines. Mononuclear cells from tonsil or nasal tissue cells were cultured with Bordetella pertussis antigens and TRM cells quantified by flow cytometry. Adults immunized with wP vaccines as children had significantly more IL-17A and IFN-y-producing TRM cells that respond to B. pertussis antigens in respiratory tissues when compared with aP-primed donors. Our findings demonstrate that wP vaccines induce CD4 TRM cells that can persist in respiratory tissues for decades.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that children who had received an initial priming dose of whole-cell pertussis (wP) vaccine, rather than acellular pertussis (aP) vaccine, had a lower risk of developing IgE-mediated food allergy, the most common cause of anaphylaxis-related hospital presentations of childhood. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between wP versus aP vaccination in infancy and subsequent hospital presentations for anaphylaxis. METHODS: This study was preregistered under PMID 34874968. Perinatal records for a cohort of New South Wales-born children (1997-1999) receiving their first dose of pertussis-containing vaccine before age 4 months were probabilistically linked to hospital and immunization records. We used adjusted Cox models to estimate hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% CIs for anaphylaxis-coded hospitalizations. RESULTS: There were 218,093 New South Wales-born children who received a first dose of wP or aP before age 4 months. Among these children, 86 experienced at least one hospitalization for food-induced anaphylaxis at age 5-15 years (range of events per patient, one to three). The person-time of follow-up was 1,476,969 years, and 665,519 years for children vaccinated with wP as a first dose (wP-1 children) and aP as a first dose (aP-1 children), respectively. The incidence rates for first hospitalization for food anaphylaxis were 3.5 (95% CI, 2.6-4.6) and 5.1 (95% CI, 3.5-7.1) per 100,000 child-years among wP-1 children and aP-1 children, respectively (aHR for wP vs aP = 0.47; 95% CI, 0.26-0.83). For first admission for venom anaphylaxis, the incidence rate was 4.9 (95% CI, 3.9-6.2) per 100,000 child-years among wP-1 children and 5.1 (95% CI, 3.5-7.1) per 100,000 child-years among aP-1 children (aHR for wP vs aP = 0.92; 95% CI, 0.53-1.60), and for all-cause anaphylaxis, the incidence rate was 10.6 (95% CI, 9.0-12.4) per 100,000 child-years among wP-1 children and 12.8 (95% CI, 10.2-15.8) per 100,000 child-years among aP-1 children (aHR for wP vs aP = 0.92; 95% CI, 0.53-1.60). CONCLUSION: Vaccination with wP in infancy was associated with a lower risk of hospitalizations for food-induced anaphylaxis (and therefore severe IgE-mediated food allergy) occurring in childhood.

Since the 2000s, sporadic outbreaks of whooping cough have been reported in advanced countries, where the acellular pertussis vaccination rate is relatively high, and in developing countries. Small-scale whooping cough has also continued in many countries, due in part to the waning of immune protection after childhood vaccination, necessitating the development of an improved pertussis vaccine and vaccination program. Currently, two different production platforms are being actively pursued in Korea; one is based on the aP (acellular pertussis) vaccine purified from B. pertussis containing pertussis toxoid (PT), filamentous hemagglutin (FHA) and pertactin (PRN), and the other is based on the recombinant aP (raP), containing genetically detoxified pertussis toxin ADP-ribosyltransferase subunit 1 (PtxS1), FHA, and PRN domain, expressed and purified from recombinant E. coli. aP components were further combined with diphtheria and tetanus vaccine components as a prototype DTaP vaccine by GC Pharma (GC DTaP vaccine). We evaluated and compared the immunogenicity and the protective efficacy of aP and raP vaccines in an experimental murine challenge model: humoral immunity in serum, IgA secretion in nasal lavage, bacterial clearance after challenge, PTx (pertussis toxin) CHO cell neutralization titer, cytokine secretion in spleen single cell, and tissue resident memory CD4+ T cell (CD4+ TRM cell) in lung tissues. In humoral immunogenicity, GC DTaP vaccines showed high titers for PT and PRN and showed similar patterns in nasal lavage and IL-5 cytokine secretions. The GC DTaP vaccine and the control vaccine showed equivalent results in bacterial clearance after challenge, PTx CHO cell neutralization assay, and CD4+ TRM cell. In contrast, the recombinant raP vaccine exhibited strong antibody responses for FHA and PRN, albeit with low antibody level of PT and low titer in PTx CHO neutralization assay, as compared to control and GC DTaP vaccines. The raP vaccine provided a sterile lung bacterial clearance comparable to a commercial control vaccine after the experimental challenge in murine model. Moreover, raP exhibited a strong cytokine response and CD4+ TRM cell in lung tissue, comparable or superior to the experimental and commercial DTaP vaccinated groups. Contingent on improving the biophysical stability and humoral response to PT, the raP vaccine warrants further development as an effective alternative to aP vaccines for the control of a pertussis outbreak.

PURPOSE: The uptake of adolescent vaccines has improved over the years. However, research of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on this uptake among racial/ethnic minority adolescents has been limited. This study was conducted to compare the probability of uptake of the human papillomavirus (HPV); tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap); and quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) vaccines among racial/ethnic minority adolescents ages 13-17 years in 2019, 2020, and 2021. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design to examine data from the National Immunization Survey-Teen (2019-2021), multivariate probit regression was used to model variation in uptake of these three adolescent vaccines (n = 38,128). The outcome measures were HPV, Tdap, and MenACWY vaccine uptake. RESULTS: The probability of uptake of HPV vaccine was higher in 2020 (Coef = 0.09 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.03-0.16]) and 2021 (Coef = 0.07 [95% CI, 0.00-0.15]) than in 2019. The probability of uptake of MenACWY vaccine was higher in 2020 (Coef = 0.08 [95% CI, 0.02-0.15]) than in 2019. The probability of uptake of recommended vaccines varied among racial/ethnic minorities with non-Hispanic Black adolescents exhibiting higher probability of uptake of HPV vaccine (Coef = 0.10 [95% CI, 0.01-0.19]) than Tdap vaccine. U.S. Census region and insurance status were associated with the uptake of all recommended vaccines. DISCUSSION: Progress in the uptake of these recommended vaccines may not have been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, disparities in uptake of the recommended vaccines still exist despite increased uptake during the pandemic. Future research should examine the disparities as well as examine regional differences in the uptake of these three adolescent vaccines.

OBJECTIVE: COVID-19 vaccination is a key approach to reduce morbidity and mortality in pregnant patients and their newborns. Anti-vaccine sentiment has recently increased with unclear impact on pregnant patients. We examined the association between acceptance of tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) and influenza vaccines, considered to be routine pregnancy vaccines, and COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Secondarily, we identified other predictors of COVID-19 vaccine uptake and described pregnancy outcomes in patients who were and were not vaccinated during pregnancy. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all patients who delivered at a single site from December 2020 - March 2022. Demographic, pregnancy, neonatal, and vaccination data were abstracted from the electronic medical record, which imports vaccine history from the California Immunization Registry. The relationship between influenza and Tdap vaccine acceptance, other baseline characteristics, and COVID-19 vaccine uptake was assessed using univariable and multivariable regression analysis. RESULTS: Of the 7857 patients who delivered during the study period, 4410 (56.1%) accepted the COVID-19 vaccine. Of those who received the COVID-19 vaccine, 3363 (97.6%) and 3049 (88.5%) received influenza and Tdap vaccines, respectively. Patients were more likely to receive the COVID-19 vaccine if they had advanced maternal age, obesity, Asian race, and private insurance. After adjustment for baseline differences, COVID vaccine acceptance was associated with receipt of Tdap (aOR 2.10, 95% CI 1.90-2.33) and influenza vaccines (aOR 2.83, 95% CI 2.55-3.14). There were no differences in preterm birth, low birthweight, and NICU admission between patients who received and did not receive the COVID-19 vaccine. CONCLUSION: Patients were more likely to accept COVID-19 vaccination if they received Tdap or influenza vaccinations. Older age, obesity, Asian race, and private insurance were independent predictors of vaccine uptake. Disparities in COVID-19 vaccination uptake bear further exploration to guide efforts in equitable and widespread vaccine distribution.

OBJECTIVES: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a decline in vaccine coverage, and the implementation of combined vaccines and co-administration strategies emerged as potential solutions to alleviate this predicament. Our objective is to delve into the concurrent administration of the sabin-strain-based inactivated poliovirus vaccine (sIPV), the diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP), and measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR), with the intention of bridging the evidentiary gap pertaining to vaccine co-administration in Chinese infants, and to ensure a safe and effective vaccination strategy, ultimately leading to an augmentation in immunization coverage. METHODS: This study was a follow-up trial of the "Immunogenicity and safety of concomitant administration of the sIPV with the DTaP vaccine in children: a multicenter, randomized, non-inferiority, controlled trial." Blood samples were collected on day 0 and day 30, and serum antibody levels were detected to measure antibody responses to each of the antigens. Local and systemic adverse events were monitored and compared among groups. This study is the first to fill the knowledge gap in China regarding the safe and effective combined vaccination of sIPV, DTaP, and MMR vaccines. RESULTS: The geometric mean titer of the poliovirus types I, II, and III neutralizing antibodies were 1060.22 (95% CI: 865.73-1298.39), 1537.06 (95% CI: 1324.27-1784.05), and 1539.10 (95% CI: 1296.37-1827.29) in group I on day 30; geometric mean titer of antibodies against DTaP and MMR in the simultaneous vaccination group was non-inferior to those in the DTaP alone and MMR alone group. Reporting rates of local and systemic adverse reactions were similar between groups and no serious adverse events were reported throughout the clinical study period. CONCLUSION: Co-administration of the sIPV, DTaP, and MMR was safe and did not impact immunogenicity, which would help to mitigate administrative costs and enhance vaccine coverage rates.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination coverage of healthcare professionals (HCPs) is below 40%, but this data is not available for Brazil. We hypothesize that a high number of HCPs are not immune to pertussis in Brazil. Main objective was to determine the seroprevalence of anti-pertussis toxin (anti-PT IgG) among HCPs. Secondary objectives were to evaluate Tdap vaccination coverage, to assess predictive factors associated with anti-PT IgG, and to estimate the decay of anti-PT IgG and time to Tdap vaccination. METHODS: Observational cross-sectional serological study in 352 HCPs who worked at São Paulo Hospital - Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in 2020, approved by UNIFESP Ethics Committee. Data collected included sociodemographics, knowledge about Tdap, and vaccination status. Anti-PT IgG were quantified by ELISA: <10 IU/mL seronegative and ≥ 10-1000 IU/mL seropositive. Titers ≥ 10-50 IU/mL were classified low positivity, indicating no recent B. pertussis infection or Tdap vaccination; >50 IU/mL high positivity, indicating recent B. pertussis infection or Tdap vaccination, and > 100 IU/mL as acute B. pertussis infection or Tdap vaccination in the previous year. Comparisons were done by Chi-square test, multivariable logistic regression, and Pearsons correlation, at 5% p-level. RESULTS: 331/352 HCPs were not aware the Brazilian National Immunization Program recommends Tdap for all HCPs and pregnant women. 68/339 HCPs received Tdap (mean 3.1 ± 2.0 years). 55/352 were seronegative for pertussis, all unvaccinated. 56/271 with no history of Tdap vaccination had high positivity. The probability of anti-PT IgG > 50 IU/mL was 11.5 times higher in Tdap vaccinated HCPs than in non-vaccinated (p < 0.001). There was a weak but significant correlation between anti-PT IgG and interval of Tdap vaccination (r = 0.404; p = 0.001). Anti-PT IgG dropped 5 IU/mL/year (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Better education of HCPs on needs and benefits of Tdap vaccination is critical. Goals must be to improve HCPs vaccination coverage.

Routine vaccination with pertussis vaccines has been successful in driving down pertussis mortality and morbidity globally. Despite high vaccination coverage, countries such as Australia, USA, and UK have experienced increase in pertussis activity over the last few decades. This may be due to local pockets of low vaccination coverage that result in persistence of pertussis in the population and occasionally lead to large outbreaks. The objective of this study was to characterize the association between pertussis vaccination coverage and sociodemographic factors and pertussis incidence at the school district level in King County, Washington, USA. We used monthly pertussis incidence data for all ages reported to the Public Health Seattle and King County between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2017 to obtain school district level pertussis incidence. We obtained immunization data from the Washington State Immunization Information System to estimate school-district level vaccination coverage as proportion of 19-35 month old children fully vaccinated with ≥4 doses of the Diphtheria-Tetanus-acellular-Pertussis (DTaP) vaccine in a school district. We used two methods to quantify the effects of vaccination coverage on pertussis incidence: an ecological vaccine model and an endemic-epidemic model. Even though the effect of vaccination is modeled differently in the two approaches, both models can be used to estimate the association between vaccination coverage and pertussis incidence. Using the ecological vaccine model, we estimated the vaccine effectiveness of 4 doses of Diphtheria-Tetanus-acellular-Pertussis vaccine to be 83% (95% credible interval: 63%, 95%). In the endemic-epidemic model, under-vaccination was statistically significantly associated with epidemic risk of pertussis (adjusted Relative Risk, aRR: 2.76; 95% confidence interval: 1.44, 16.6). Household size and median income were statistically significantly associated with endemic pertussis risk. The endemic-epidemic model suffers from ecological bias, whereas the ecological vaccine model provides less biased and more interpretable estimates of epidemiological parameters, such as DTaP vaccine effectiveness, for each school district.

What is already known about this topic?: Vaccine effectiveness (VE) is positively correlated with the number of administered co-purified diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP) doses. A matched case-control study conducted in Zhongshan City revealed that the co-purified DTaP VE against pertussis-related illnesses in children aged 4-11 months was 42% for one dose, 88% for two doses, and 95% for three doses, respectively. What is added by this report?: The results of this study contribute to the current body of research. We found that the VE of co-purified DTaP against pertussis-related illness and hospitalization increased substantially, ranging from 24%-26% after one dose to 86%-87% after four doses. What are the implications for public health practice?: The results of this study underscore the significance of prompt and comprehensive immunization using co-purified DTaP to decrease the incidence of pertussis. Additionally, these findings offer evidence supporting the modification of China's pertussis vaccination approach.

The current study was designed to comparatively analyse the reactions of different mouse strains in response to acellular pertussis (aP) vaccine, with attempt to further provide a reference for aP vaccine evaluation. NIH mice, ICR mice, and BALB/c mice adopted from different pharmacopoeias and studies were utilized to measure the immune protection and immunogenicity of the same batch of aP vaccine according to the Modified intracerebral challenge assay (MICA) from some Asian pharmacopoeias and the pertussis serological potency test (PTST) method from European Pharmacopoeia. Based on our results, the aP vaccine detected by NIH mice had the best potency. So the NIH mice were more suitable for detecting the immune protection of aP vaccine by the MICA method. Given that the levels of PT-IgG and FHA-IgG antibodies in ICR mice were the highest, and the levels of Th1 and Th2 cells were significantly increased (P < .01), it was more suitable for the detection of immunogenicity of aP vaccine by PSPT method. Spleen lymphocytes were stimulated by PT and FHA. And the levels of IL-4 in ICR mice and NIH mice were significantly increased, so were the levels of IL-17, IL-23, IL-27, and TNF-α in BALB/c mice. NIH mice have stronger adaptive immunity and the weakest inflammatory response, and ICR mice have enhanced adaptive immunity and inflammatory responses, both of which can be thereby used for evaluation by different pharmacopoeia methods. NIH was more suitable for the MICA method of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and ICR for the PSPT method of European Pharmacopoeia.

While vaccines have markedly reduced the incidence of pertussis, a resurgence has occurred in many countries. Until recently, pertussis has not been recognized as an important public health challenge in India due to its successful infant immunization program. However, India still accounts for a large proportion of the world's cases, and increasing reports of pertussis in other countries and in neonates have regenerated interest in pertussis among Indian authorities. The Global Pertussis Initiative (GPI) Annual Meeting was held virtually in October 2020, in part, to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology and disease burden of pertussis and to explore opportunities to improve its prevention in India. There was a consensus that pertussis cases are being underestimated in India due to multiple factors, such as a reliance on passive surveillance and diagnostic challenges. India offers both whole-cell pertussis and acellular pertussis vaccines, but vaccine coverage is inconsistent across regions due to differences in vaccine availability, access to health care, and regional administrative challenges. This report summarizes the outcomes and considers the key clinical implications of this meeting. The GPI agreed that active surveillance of pertussis in India would be optimal and recommended several studies, including serosurveillance among women of reproductive age to assess the prevalence of recent pertussis infection and to enable policy changes that will enhance the rational use of acellular and whole-cell vaccines. It also recommended engagement with nongovernmental organizations in order to encourage pregnancy immunization in the public sector. To achieve effective control of pertussis in the future, the GPI recognizes there are opportunities to characterize the burden of pertussis in India appropriately and increase vaccination coverage in multiple age groups.

Bordetella pertussis is the causative agent of a respiratory infection called pertussis (whooping cough) that can be fatal in newborns and infants. The pathogen produces a variety of antigenic compounds which alone or simultaneously can damage various host cells. Despite the availability of pertussis vaccines and high vaccination coverage around the world, a resurgence of the disease has been observed in many countries. Reasons for the increase in pertussis cases may include increased awareness, improved diagnostic techniques, low vaccine efficacy, especially acellular vaccines, and waning immunity. Many efforts have been made to develop more effective strategies to fight against B. pertussis and one of the strategies is the use of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) in vaccine formulations. OMVs are attracting great interest as vaccine platforms since they can carry immunogenic structures such as toxins and LPS. Many studies have been carried out with OMVs from different B. pertussis strains and they revealed promising results in the animal challenge and human preclinical model. However, the composition of OMVs differs in terms of isolation and purification methods, strains, culture, and stress conditions. Although the vesicles from B. pertussis represent an attractive pertussis vaccine candidate, further studies are needed to advance clinical research for next-generation pertussis vaccines. This review summarizes general information about pertussis, the history of vaccines against the disease, and the immune response to these vaccines, with a focus on OMVs. We discuss progress in developing an OMV-based pertussis vaccine platform and highlight successful applications as well as potential challenges and gaps.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the health and economic impact of diphtheria, tetanus, whole-cell pertussis vaccine (DTwP) and diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP) vaccination on pertussis prevention and control in China during the 40 years from 1978 to 2017. METHODS: We conducted cost-benefit analyses with a decision tree model populated with historical vaccination coverage levels and pertussis incidence and mortality data from before 1978 and during 1978 to 2017. We modeled 40 birth cohorts from birth until death. Costs and benefits were estimated from direct cost and societal perspectives (direct and indirect costs). Costs and benefits were adjusted to 2017 US dollars (USD), and future values were discounted at a 3% annual rate. We calculated net benefit values (net savings) and benefit-cost ratios of pertussis vaccination of children younger than 5 years. We conducted sensitivity analyses by varying key parameters within plausible ranges. RESULTS: Without DTwP and DTaP vaccination, there would be an estimated 115.76 million pertussis cases and 426 650 pertussis deaths in the 40 cohorts. With DTwP/DTaP vaccination, pertussis cases and deaths were decreased by an estimated 92.57% and 97.43%, saving 46 987.81 million USD in direct costs and 82 013.37 million USD from societal perspective. Pertussis vaccination program costs were 2168.76 million USD and 3961.28 million USD from direct cost and societal perspectives. Benefit-cost ratios were 21.67:1 from the direct cost perspective and 20.70:1 from the societal perspective. Sensitivity analyses showed the results to be robust. CONCLUSIONS: Over the lifetime of 40 birth cohorts, China's immunization program is preventing 93% of pertussis cases and 97% of pertussis deaths, resulting in substantial savings to the healthcare system and society.

BACKGROUND: The association between the administration of vaccines containing diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis (DTaP) and febrile seizures (FSs) is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of FSs after the administration of DTaP-containing vaccines in Chinese children aged 1 to 23 months. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A self-controlled case series (SCCS) design was adopted based on data from the Ningbo Regional Health Information Platform (NRHIP). The observation period was from 1 to 23 months of age. The relative incidences (RIs) within 0 to 3 days, 4 to 7 days, and 0 to 7 days after the administration of DTaP-containing vaccines were estimated. The remaining observation period was the control period. RESULTS: The RIs within 0 to 3 days, 4 to 7 days, and 0 to 7 days after any dose of DTaP-containing vaccines were 1.14 (95% CI 0.86 to 1.52), 0.89 (95% CI 0.65 to 1.23), and 1.02 (95% CI 0.82 to 1.26), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides reassuring evidence that there is no increased risk of FSs immediately after the administration of DTaP-containing vaccines, which might serve to reassure both professionals and families with regard to the risk of FSs associated with DTaP-containing vaccines.

@#Combined vaccine is a single vaccine preparation made by mixing two or more different organism or purified antigens by physical methods.The use of combined vaccine can reduce the number of immunization shots and improve the compliance of children and acceptance of parents;reduce the costs of transportation,storage and management;avoid missing vaccination and improve vaccination rate.At present,a variety of combined vaccines have been licensed abroad,which have good safety and immunogenicity;some combined vaccines have been put on the market in China,and many combined vaccines are in clinical trials.In recent years,with the successful development of component pertussis vaccine and inactivated poliovirus vaccines of Sabin strain Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ in China,the combined vaccines based on diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine(DTaP) have been greatly developed.In this paper,the research progress on combined vaccines based on DTaP,which have been licensed and in clinical trials at home and abroad,was reviewed,in order to provide ideas for the development of related combined vaccines in China.
