RESUMO

The extensor digitorum longus is a source of much anatomic variation, mostly related with extra tendinous slips or their unusual insertions. This report describes a new configuration of the extensor digitorum longus with two heads and two main tendons which bifurcate into five slips. These slips undergo further divisions and establish connections between the each other. Our findings provide a greater insight into the intricacies of human morphology.

RESUMO

The extensor hallucis longus muscle originates from the anterior surface of the fibula and on the interosseous membrane medial to the origin of the extensor digitorum longus. Its distal attachment is typically located on the dorsal aspect of the distal phalanx of the hallux. However, EHL tendon variations have been reported in anatomical studies based on adults and fetuses. The most common variation is an additional tendinous slip in the region of the distal attachment. Additional tendinous slips can have specific names depending on where they insert. This wide range of morphological variations among the additional tendons has necessitated appropriate classification system to rank all types that could be used by clinicians. The main goal of this review is to summarize information from the available literature about the extensor hallucis longus muscle and to compare classification systems and the results of previous studies. Another aim is to create a new classification system.

RESUMO

The flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) muscle is located in the intermediate layer of the muscles in the anterior compartment of the forearm. Variable but individual variations have been reported in the FDS regarding the number of head and the origin, distribution and interconnections of muscle slip and insertion to finger. In this case, we report a concomitant complex variation in FDS which was observed in a cadaver during a routine dissection classes for the undergraduate medical students. It includes the variation which is the separation of the tendon of FDS into the superficial and deep layers, the structural variations in muscle slips and associated tendon variations, the finding of Gantzer' muscle leading to flexor pollicis longus muscle. These complex variations in FDS are very rare case and this report summarizes the related phylogenetic and embryological significance.
