RESUMO

There have been reports of potential health risks for people from hydrophobic organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated hydrocarbons (PCHs), and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). When a contaminated site is used for residential housing or public utility and recreation areas, the soil-bound organic pollutants might pose a threat to human health. In this study, we investigated the contamination profiles and potential risks to human health of 15 PAHs, 6 PCHs, and 12 OPFRs in soils from four contaminated sites in China. We used an in vitro method to determine the oral bioaccessibility of soil pollutants. Total PAHs were found at concentrations ranging from 26.4 ng/g to 987 ng/g. PCHs (0.27‒14.3 ng/g) and OPFRs (6.30‒310 ng/g) were detected, but at low levels compared to earlier reports. The levels of PAHs, PCHs, and OPFRs released from contaminated soils into simulated gastrointestinal fluids ranged from 1.74% to 91.0%, 2.51% to 39.6%, and 1.37% to 96.9%, respectively. Based on both spiked and unspiked samples, we found that the oral bioaccessibility of pollutants was correlated with their logKow and molecular weight, and the total organic carbon content and pH of soils. PAHs in 13 out of 38 contaminated soil samples posed potential high risks to children. When considering oral bioaccessibility, nine soils still posed potential risks, while the risks in the remaining soils became negligible. The contribution of this paper is that it corrects the health risk of soil-bound organic pollutants by detecting bioaccessibility in actual soils from different contaminated sites.

RESUMO

This study investigated environmental distribution and human exposure of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives in one Chinese petroleum refinery facility. It was found that, following with high concentrations of 16 EPA PAHs (∑Parent-PAHs) in smelting subarea of studied petroleum refinery facility, total derivatives of PAHs [named as XPAHs, including nitro PAHs (NPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs), and brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs)] in gas (mean= 1.57 × 104 ng/m3), total suspended particulate (TSP) (mean= 4.33 × 103 ng/m3) and soil (mean= 4.37 × 103 ng/g) in this subarea had 1.76-6.19 times higher levels than those from other subareas of this facility, surrounding residential areas and reference areas, indicating that petroleum refining processes would lead apparent derivation of PAHs. Especially, compared with those in residential and reference areas, gas samples in the petrochemical areas had higher ∑NPAH/∑PAHs (mean=2.18), but lower ∑Cl-PAH/∑PAHs (mean=1.43 × 10-1) and ∑Br-PAH/∑PAHs ratios (mean=7.49 × 10-2), indicating the richer nitrification of PAHs than chlorination during petrochemical process. The occupational exposure to PAHs and XPAHs in this petroleum refinery facility were 24-343 times higher than non-occupational exposure, and the ILCR (1.04 × 10-4) for petrochemical workers was considered to be potential high risk. Furthermore, one expanded high-resolution screening through GC Orbitrap/MS was performed for soils from petrochemical area, and another 35 PAHs were found, including alkyl-PAHs, phenyl-PAHs and other species, indicating that profiles and risks of PAHs analogs in petrochemical areas deserve further expanded investigation.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: This work reports structure-property correlations of 27 zwitterions Reichardt's types of zwitterions. Focuses are twofold, to see the (1) impacts of metamerism with Reichardt's vs Brooker's types of zwitterions and (2) impacts of monocyclic aromatic rings as bridges. All the molecules considered here have pyridinium (common acceptor: A) and p-phenylene-dicyanomethanide (common donor: D). Fundamental molecular properties like dipole moments (µ), polarizabilities (α), hyperpolarizabilities (ß), and adiabatic absorptions were computed only for the Reichardt types and compared with the literature reported respective Brooker's types of zwitterions. As an impact of metamerism, in general 2-3 times enhanced hyperpolarizabilities (ß) were observed for Reichardt's compared to Brooker's types. Exceptions were observed with some triazine bridges and furan bridge, where Brooker's types were found to be more efficient. As impacts of aromatic bridges, in general, 6-sevenfold enhanced ß compared to well-known traditional bridges and enhanced ß were observed compared to D-A directly connected zwitterion (benzene bridge: sixfold enhanced ß). Current findings show that the aromatic bridge control with Reichardt's types of zwitterions is more efficient and thus may be employed as an effective strategy for the designing of functional molecular chromophores for various other fundamental areas. METHODS: All computations were performed with Gaussian 09. Geometry optimizations and computations of fundamental properties were carried out with HF, B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97xD methodologies, with 6-31G(d,p) and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets. For adiabatic excitations, computations were carried out using TDDFT and TDHF approaches. For the computations of the response properties (like the nonlinear optical responses), CPHF approach was used.

RESUMO

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important global clinical issue, requiring not only prevention but also effective treatment. Following TBI, diverse parallel and intertwined pathological mechanisms affecting biochemical, neurochemical, and inflammatory pathways can have a severe impact on the patient's quality of life. The current review summarizes the evidence for the utility of amantadine in TBI in connection to its mechanism of action. Amantadine, the drug combining multiple mechanisms of action, may offer both neuroprotective and neuroactivating effects in TBI patients. Indeed, the use of amantadine in TBI has been encouraged by several clinical practice guidelines/recommendations. Amantadine is also available as an infusion, which may be of particular benefit in unconscious patients with TBI due to immediate delivery to the central nervous system and the possibility of precise dosing. In other situations, orally administered amantadine may be used. There are several questions that remain to be addressed: can amantadine be effective in disorders of consciousness requiring long-term treatment and in combination with drugs approved for the treatment of TBI? Do the observed beneficial effects of amantadine extend to disorders of consciousness due to factors other than TBI? Well-controlled clinical studies are warranted to ultimately confirm its utility in the TBI and provide answers to these questions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In gene therapy with adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors for diseases of the central nervous system, the vectors can be administered into blood vessels, cerebrospinal fluid space, or the brain parenchyma. When gene transfer to a large area of the brain is required, the first two methods are used, but for diseases in which local gene transfer is expected to be effective, vectors are administered directly into the brain parenchyma. AREAS COVERED: Strategies for intraparenchymal vector delivery in gene therapy for Parkinson's disease, aromatic l-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) deficiency, and epilepsy are reviewed. EXPERT OPINION: Stereotactic intraparenchymal injection of AAV vectors allows precise gene delivery to the target site. Although more surgically invasive than intravascular or intrathecal administration, intraparenchymal vector delivery has the advantage of a lower vector dose, and preexisting neutralizing antibodies have little effect on the transduction efficacy. This approach improves motor function in AADC deficiency and led to regulatory approval of an AAV vector for the disease in the EU. Although further validation through clinical studies is needed, direct infusion of viral vectors into the brain parenchyma is expected to be a novel treatment for Parkinson's disease and drug-resistant epilepsy.

RESUMO

The lockdown restrictions against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have led to unprecedented reductions in global anthropogenic activities. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic combustion-induced pollutants, but the influence of anthropogenic responses to COVID-19 on PAH contamination remains largely unknown. Here we quantified the impacts of lockdown restrictions on 16PAH pollution based on the data in concentrations dissolved in the water phase and absorbed on the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Elbe River from 2015 to 2021 and determined the changes in source contributions classified by individual years and stations. Results show that the annual average PAH concentrations in water and SPM were determined as 0.055 µg·L-1 and 3.77 mg·kg-1 from 2015 to 2021, respectively. Pronounced declines in PAH on SPM (up to -18 %) were observed during the three lockdowns in Germany from 2020 to 2021. However, dramatic rebounds of anthropogenic activities during the removal of the lockdown led to increases (up to 29 %) in ∑16PAH concentrations compared to the same period in previous years. Through the source apportionment method, vehicle and coal emissions were the two most predominant sources of PAHs in the river. Vehicle contribution decreased during the lockdown, while coal emissions increased by 5 %. Health risks for three age groups were assessed as potential low risk and decreased by 18 % from 1.54 × 10-4 in 2015 to 1.27 × 10-4 in 2019, and rebounded to 1.40 × 10-4 in 2020-2021. The findings of this study highlight the strong consistency between PAH concentrations and anthropogenic intensity, implying that source control from improved cleaner production is an effective pathway for mitigating PAH contamination in the aquatic environment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Since the severe hazard to the ecosystem and widespread distribution through biological and man-made ways of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), it is very urgent to establish the ultrasensitive analytical method to quantitatively and directly monitor PAHs in real samples. However, because of the complicated environmental matrix and their trace concentration, the pre-concentration process is a necessary step to analyze of these compounds. In this study, solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique was proposed to separate and enrich fifteen trace PAHs from environmental samples. RESULTS: In this work, a honeycomb-like triazine-based conjugated microporous polymers (T-CMPs) were prepared by Yamamoto reaction and firstly used as SPME coating material for the ultrasensitive direct-immersion-SPME of PAHs prior to high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). The synthesized T-CMPs was characterized using various spectroscopy and electron microscopy techniques. The unique porous network of T-CMPs might deliver abundant adsorption sites for PAHs. Orthogonal experimental design (OED) was used to investigate the influence of four experimental parameters on the enrichment ability. Under optimal situation, a wide linear range (which lasted from 0.003 to 1000 µg L-1) with the coefficients of determination (R2) varying 0.9981 to 0.9993 was obtained. The limits of detection (LODs) for the analytes varied from 0.001 to 1.650 µg L-1, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were between 0.003 and 4.960 µg L-1. The proposed method was effectively employed to the simultaneous and ultrasensitive detection of fifteen PAHs in industrial wastewaters. The relative recoveries for PAHs analysis varied from 74.6 % to 105 % with the relative standard deviations (RSD) of 0.1 %-7.5 % in real water samples. SIGNIFICANCE: The prepared SPME coating material exhibited a simultaneous, high extraction and adsorption capacity for fifteen PAHs due to its honeycomb-like porous structure, ultra-large specific surface area, strong π-π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions. The present research developed a novel strategy for the construction of SPME fiber coating composites and demonstrated great application potential in the field of sample pretreatment and environmental analytical chemistry.

RESUMO

Triphenylene derivatives are highly investigated for their electronic, supramolecular and photophysical properties, but the direct modification of the central aromatic core is particularly challenging especially in the internal positions 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 12. Herein we present an efficient alkylation method of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexasubstituted triphenylene derivatives leading to tris-alkylated C3-symmetric derivatives in good yields using N-(hydroxymethyl)carboxamide or N-(alkoxylmethyl)carboxamide alkylating agents.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between childhood polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure and emotional and behavioral problems in adolescence. METHODS: Participants included 998 school-age children aged 7-12 years (514 girls and 484 boys). Metabolite concentrations of four PAHs (1-hydroxypyrene [1-OHPyr], 2-hydroxynaphthalene [2-OHNap], 2-hydroxyfluorine [2-OHFlu], and 9-hydroxyphenanthrene [9-OHPhe]) were measured in urine samples at baseline (Dec 2014-Dec 2015). During adolescence, we measured emotional and behavioral problems in study participants. We used logistic regression models to assess the effects of different levels of PAH metabolite concentrations on emotional and behavioral problems for boys and girls, separately. RESULTS: Boys exposed to 1-OHPyr and 2-OHFlu had a significantly higher risk of externalizing problems (OR: 2.62, 95% CI: 1.09 ~ 6.29; OR: 2.92, 95% CI: 1.15 ~ 7.42). 2-OHNap exposure faced a higher risk of internalizing problems (OR: 3.85, 95% CI: 1.28 ~ 11.58; OR: 3.63, 95% CI: 1.13 ~ 11.63) and externalizing problems (OR: 4.27, 95% CI: 1.44 ~ 12.70; OR: 4.68, 95% CI: 1.49 ~ 14.73). Moreover, boys exposed to 9-OHPhe exhibited a significant risk of anxiety (OR: 2.84, 95% CI: 1.01 ~ 7.97; OR: 3.00, 95% CI: 1.04 ~ 8.68). Similarly, girls exposed to 9-OHPhe had a significant risk of anxiety (OR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.25 ~ 4.64). CONCLUSION: Childhood PAH exposures are associated with emotional and behavioral problems in adolescence, and boys seem more susceptible than girls.

RESUMO

The oxidation of benzylic alcohols is an important transformation in modern organic synthesis. A plethora of photoredox protocols have been developed to achieve the aerobic oxidation of alcohols into carbonyls. Recently, several groups described that ultraviolet (UV) or purple light can initiate the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols in the absence of an external catalyst, and depicted different mechanisms involving the photoinduction of •O2- as a critical reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, based on comprehensive mechanistic investigations, including control experiments, radical quenching experiments, EPR studies, UV-vis spectroscopy, kinetics studies, and density functional theory calculations (DFT), we elucidate here that HOO•, which is released via the H2O2 elimination of α-hydroxyl peroxyl radicals [ArCR(OH)OO•], serves as the real chain carrier for the autocatalytic photooxidation of benzylic alcohols. The mechanistic ambiguities depicted in the precedent literature are clarified, in terms of the crucial ROS and its evolution, the rate-limiting step, and the primary radical cascade. This work highlights the necessity of stricter mechanistic analyses on UV-driven oxidative reactions that involve aldehydes' (or ketones) generation.

RESUMO

A new, versatile, and straightforward vapor phase deposition (VPD) approach was used to prepare continuous stationary phase gradients (cSPGs) on silica thin-layer chromatography (TLC) plates using phenyldimethylchlorosilane (PDCS) as a precursor. A mixture of paraffin oil and PDCS was placed at the bottom of an open-ended rectangular chamber, allowing the reactive silanes to evaporate and freely diffuse under a controlled atmosphere. As the volatile silane diffused across the length of the TLC plate, it reacted with the surface silanol groups thus functionalizing the surface in a gradient fashion. Characterization of the gradient TLC plates was done through UV visualization and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Visualizing the fluorescent gradient plates under UV radiation shows the clear presence of a gradient with the side closest to the vapor source undergoing the most modification. More quantitative characterization of the shape of the gradient was provided by DRS. The DRS showed that the degree of modification and shape of the gradient was dependent on the concentration of silane, VPD time, and relative humidity. To evaluate the chromatographic performance, a mixture of three aromatic compounds (acetaminophen (A), aspirin (As), and 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (3H)) was spotted on the high (GHP) and low phenyl (GLP) ends of the gradient TLC plates and the results compared to the separations carried out on unmodified and uniformly modified plates. The GHP TLC plates showed retention factors (Rf) of 0.060 ± 0.006, 0.391 ± 0.006, and 0.544 ± 0.006, whereas the unmodified plate displayed Rf values of 0.059 ± 0.006, 0.092 ± 0.003, and 0.037 ± 0.002 for the analytes A, As, and 3H, respectively. From the Rf values, it was observed that each modified plate exhibited different selectivity for the analytes. The GHP TLC plates exhibited better separation performance, and improved resolution compared to the GLP, unmodified, and uniformly modified plates. Overall, VPD is a new, cost-effective method for creating a gradient on the stationary phase which has the potential to advance chromatographic separation capabilities.

RESUMO

To meet the growing international demand for aromatic rice, this study, conducted at Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, aimed to enhance the yield and quality of the 'Tulaipanji' rice cultivar through advanced establishment methods and the use of organic nutrients over two years. The research tested three planting techniques: mechanical transplanting, wet direct seeding (using a drum seeder), and traditional methods, alongside four nutrient management strategies: vermicompost, farmyard manure, a mix of both, and conventional fertilizers. Findings revealed that mechanical transplanting significantly increased yield by over 31.98% and 71.05% compared to traditional methods and wet direct seeding, respectively. Using vermicompost alone as a nutrient source not only boosted yields by 21.31% over conventional fertilizers but also enhanced the rice's nutritional value and cooking quality. Moreover, soils treated with vermicompost showed higher dehydrogenase activity, indicating better soil health. Economically, mechanical transplanting with vermicompost was the most beneficial, yielding the highest net returns and benefit-cost ratios in both years studied. This approach presents a viable model for improving the sustainability of aromatic rice production globally, emphasizing the economic and environmental advantages of adopting mechanical planting techniques and organic fertilization methods.

RESUMO

Spectasterols F-O (1-10), ten interesting ergosterols with an aromatized B ring, were obtained from Aspergillus spectabilis. Their structures and absolute configurations were determined using a combination of high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. Structurally, these aromatic ergosterols feature versatile side chains. Notably, compound aromatic ergosterols featured versatile side chains, and compound 4 is an unusual C23 ergosterol characterized by a shorter side chain due to oxidative cleavage between C-23 and C-24. All compounds were evaluated for their neuroprotective activities, with compound 8 showing a dose-dependent ability to reduce apoptosis and protect mitochondrial function in glutamate-induced SH-SY5Y cells.

RESUMO

The exploration of novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminophores with excellent ECL properties is a current research hotspot in the ECL field. Herein, a novel high-efficiency Ru-complex-free ECL emitter PyTS-Zr-BTB-MOL has been prepared by using porous ultrathin Zr-BTB metal-organic layer (MOL) as carrier to coordinatively graft the cheap and easily available polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivative luminophore PyTS whose ECL performance has never been investigated. Gratifyingly, the ECL intensity and efficiency of PyTS-Zr-BTB-MOL were markedly enhanced compared to both PyTS monomers and PyTS aggregates. The main reason was that the distance between pyrene rings was greatly expanded after the PyTS grafting on the Zr6 clusters of Zr-BTB-MOL, which overcame the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect of PyTS and thus enhanced the ECL emission. Meanwhile, the porous nanosheet structure of PyTS-Zr-BTB-MOL could distinctly increase the exposure of PyTS luminophores and shorten the diffusion paths of coreactants and electrons/ions, which effectively promoted the electrochemical excitation of more PyTS luminophores and thus achieved a further ECL enhancement. In light of the remarkable ECL property of PyTS-Zr-BTB-MOL, it was employed as an ECL indicator to build a novel high-sensitivity ECL biosensor for microRNA-21 determination, possessing a satisfactory response range (100 aM to 100 pM) and an ultralow detection limit (10.4 aM). Overall, this work demonstrated that using MOLs to coordinatively graft the PAH derivative luminophores to eliminate the ACQ effect and increase the utilization rate of the luminophores is a promising and efficient strategy to develop high-performance Ru-complex-free ECL materials for assembling ultrasensitive ECL biosensing platforms.

RESUMO

Dendrobium loddigesii, a member of the Orchidaceae family, is a valuable horticultural crop known for its aromatic qualities. However, the mechanisms responsible for the development of its aromatic characteristics remain poorly understood. To elucidate these underlying mechanisms, we assembled the first chromosome-level reference genome of D. loddigesii using PacBio HiFi-reads, Illumina short-reads, and Hi-C data. The assembly comprises 19 pseudochromosomes with N50 contig and N50 scaffold sizes of 55.15 and 89.94 Mb, respectively, estimating the genome size to be 1.68 Gb, larger than that of other sequenced Dendrobium species. During the flowering stages, we conducted a comprehensive analysis combining volatilomics and transcriptomics to understand the characteristics and biosynthetic mechanisms pathways of the floral scent. Our findings emphasize the significant contribution of aromatic terpenoids, especially monoterpenoids, in defining the floral aroma. Furthermore, we identified two crucial terpene synthase (TPS) genes that play a key role in maintaining the aroma during flowering. Through the integration volatilomics data with catalytic assays of DlTPSbs proteins, we identified specific compounds responsible for the aromatic characteristics of D. loddigesii. This integrated analysis of the genome, transcriptome, and volatilome, offers valuable insights into the development and preservation of D. loddigesii's aromatic characteristics, setting the stage for further exploration of the botanical perfumer hypothesis.

RESUMO

The capability of amyloid-like peptide fibers to emit intrinsic-fluorescence enables the study of their formation, stability and hardening through time-resolved fluorescence analysis, without the need for additional intercalating dyes. This approach allows the monitoring of amyloid-like peptides aggregation kinetics using minimal sample volumes, and the simultaneous testing of numerous experimental conditions and analytes, offering rapid and reproducible results. The analytical procedure applied to the aromatic hexapeptide F6, alone or derivatized with PEG (polyethylene glycol) moiety of different lengths, suggests that aggregation into large anisotropic structures negatively correlates with initial monomer concentration and relies on the presence of charged N- and C-termini. PEGylation reduces the extent of aggregates hardening, possibly by retaining water, and overall impacts the final structural properties of the aggregates.

RESUMO

Background: Exposure to environmental chemicals such as phthalates, phenols, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during pregnancy can increase the risk of adverse newborn outcomes. We explored the associations between maternal exposure to select environmental chemicals and DNA methylation in cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMC) and placental tissue (maternal and fetal sides) to identify potential mechanisms underlying these associations. Method: This study included 75 pregnant individuals who planned to give birth at the University of Cincinnati Hospital between 2014 and 2017. Maternal urine samples during the delivery visit were collected and analyzed for 37 biomarkers of phenols (12), phthalates (13), phthalate replacements (4), and PAHs (8). Cord blood and placenta tissue (maternal and fetal sides) were also collected to measure the DNA methylation intensities using the Infinium HumanMethylation450K BeadChip. We used linear regression, adjusting for potential confounders, to assess CpG-specific methylation changes in CBMC (n = 54) and placenta [fetal (n = 67) and maternal (n = 68) sides] associated with gestational chemical exposures (29 of 37 biomarkers measured in this study). To account for multiple testing, we used a false discovery rate q-values < 0.05 and presented results by limiting results with a genomic inflation factor of 1±0.5. Additionally, gene set enrichment analysis was conducted using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomics pathways. Results: Among the 29 chemical biomarkers assessed for differential methylation, maternal concentrations of PAH metabolites (1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 4-hydroxyphenanthrene, 1-hydroxypyrene), monocarboxyisononyl phthalate, mono-3-carboxypropyl phthalate, and bisphenol A were associated with altered methylation in placenta (maternal or fetal side). Among exposure biomarkers associated with epigenetic changes, 1-hydroxynaphthalene, and mono-3-carboxypropyl phthalate were consistently associated with differential CpG methylation in the placenta. Gene enrichment analysis indicated that maternal 1-hydroxynaphthalene was associated with lipid metabolism and cellular processes of the placenta. Additionally, mono-3-carboxypropyl phthalate was associated with organismal systems and genetic information processing of the placenta. Conclusion: Among the 29 chemical biomarkers assessed during delivery, 1-hydroxynaphthalene and mono-3-carboxypropyl phthalate were associated with DNA methylation in the placenta. RESUMO

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are naturally occurring environmental pollutants that may contribute to obesity in the adult population. To investigate the relationship between the urinary concentrations of PAH metabolites and adult obesity among the US population, the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES, 2003-2016) was used as a data source for this study. As many as 4464 participants in the NHANES 2003-2016 were included in the final analyses. We used logistic regression to look at the link between urinary PAH metabolites and obesity, using odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The study sample comprised 4464 individuals aged ≥18 years, 2199 were male and 2265 were female. The study characteristics for four different quartiles were analyzed, and the average ages of the four urinary PAH quartiles were 49.61 ± 20.01, 46.63 ± 20.33, 44.28 ± 19.19, and 43.27 ± 17.68 years, respectively. In the quartile analysis of all participants, the third quartile was significantly associated with an increased prevalence of obesity (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.12-1.59) with p-values <.05. In addition, females, but not males, had a strong link between the second, third, and fourth quartiles of urinary PAH and a higher risk of obesity (OR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.00-1.61; OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.19-1.94; and OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.09-1.78). In conclusion, the study observed that urinary PAH metabolites were associated with the prevalence of obesity among the US population.

Thermally processed meat may contain harmful compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study constructed, for the first time, the comprehensive PAH index (CPI) concentration (phenanthrene [26.47%], acenaphthene [21.83%], pyrene [18.64%], fluoranthene [17.11%], fluorene [8.49%], and anthracene [7.46%]). A visible near-infrared (Vis-NIR) hyperspectral image (HSI) system was employed to detect CPI in 150 roasted Tan lamb samples. Furthermore, two-dimensional correlation spectra were used to identify spectral features and reveal the order of chemical bond changes under the characteristic peaks at 579-737-631-449 nm. The results indicated that competitive adaptive reweighted sampling-multiple linear regression quantitative prediction model worked the best with calibration set coefficient of determination of 0.9161, calibration set coefficient of root mean square error of 2.3426 µg/kg, R-squared prediction of 0.8469, and root mean square error of prediction of 2.4119 µg/kg. Finally, PAH content distributions were visualized using the best prediction model. This study aimed to propose a feasible method for CPI in roasted Tan lamb detection based on Vis-NIR HSI coupled with multivariate analysis methods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Grain quality is an important index of rice production, particularly when plants are grown under stress. Arsenic (As) contamination in paddy fields severely affects rice grain yield and quality. Here, the effects of As and combinations of As(III)-oxidizing bacteria (Pseudomonas stutzeri 4.25, 4.27, and 4.44) and plant growth-promoting bacteria (Delftia acidovorans KKU2500-12 and Cupriavidus taiwanensis KKU2500-3) on enzymes related to starch accumulation in grains and the grain quality of Khao Dawk Mali 105 rice cultivated in As-contaminated soil under greenhouse conditions were investigated. RESULTS: Arsenic affected the activities of starch biosynthesis-related enzymes, and decreases of up to 76.27%, 71.53%, 49.74%, 73.39%, and 47.46% in AGPase, SSS, GBSS, SBE, and SDBE activities, respectively, and 9.42-61.07% in starch accumulation in grains were detected after growth in As-contaminated soil. However, the KKU2500-3/4.25 and KKU2500-3/4.44 combinations yielded the greatest enzyme activities in grains, and compared with the results observed in uninoculated seedlings, increases in starch accumulation of up to 51.16% and 23.81% were found in the inoculated seedlings after growth in medium- and high-As-contaminated soils, at 10-17 and 10-24 days after anthesis, respectively. The bacteria increased the 2-AP content in rice under As stress, possibly via the induction of proline, a 2-AP substrate. Bacterium-inoculated rice had significantly greater 2-AP levels than uninoculated rice, and 2.16-9.93% and 26.57-42.04% increases were detected in rice plants grown in medium- and high-As-contaminated soils, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Arsenic toxicity can be mitigated in rice growing under greenhouse conditions by maintaining starch biosynthesis, accumulating amylose, and increasing 2-AP content. The effectiveness of these bacteria should be validated in paddy fields; hence, safe rice grains with a good starch content and aroma could be produced.
