Introduction: As captured by the individual trait of Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), highly sensitive children perceive, process, and responds more strongly to stimuli. This increased sensitivity may make more demanding the process of regulating and managing emotions. Yet, developmental psychology literature also showed that other variables, as those related to the rearing environment, are likely to contribute to the process of regulating emotions. With the current contribution, we aim to bridge two lines of research, that of attachment studies and that of SPS, by investigating the additive and interactive contribution of SPS and internal working models of attachment representations on emotion regulation competencies in school-aged children. Method: Participants were N = 118 Italian children (mean age: 6.5, SD = 0.58 years, and 51.8% female) with their mothers. Children's positive attachment representations were rated observationally through the Manchester Child Attachment Story Task procedure during an individual session at school. Mothers reported on children SPS trait and emotion regulation competencies completing the Highly Sensitive Child Scale-parent report and the Emotion Regulation Checklist. We performed and compared a series of main and interaction effect models. Results: SPS was not directly associated with emotion regulation but it was significantly associated with positive attachment representations in predicting emotion regulation. Highly sensitive children showed poorer emotion regulation when the internalized representations were low in maternal warmth and responsiveness. When driven by sensitive and empathic attachment representation, highly sensitive children showed better emotion regulation than less-sensitive peers, suggesting a for better and for worse effect. Discussion: Highly sensitive children are not only more vulnerable to adversities but also show better emotion regulation competencies when supported by positive internal working models of attachment relationships. Overall, findings shed light on the link between SPS and attachment and suggest that working for promoting secure attachment relationships in parent-child dyads may promote better emotion regulation competences, particularly in highly sensitive children.

Children acquire and develop emotional regulatory skills in the context of parent-child attachment relationships, nonetheless empirical studies have focused mainly on mother and less information is available regarding the role of both parent-child attachment relationships. Furthermore, despite its importance, there is no information regarding preschool years. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the potential influences of both mother-child and father-child attachments on preschooler's later emotion regulation observed in the peer group. Fifty-three Portuguese nuclear families (mother, father and focal child) participated in the study; 47% of the children were boys and 53% were girls. Attachment Security was assessed at home using the Attachment Behavior Q-set when children were 3 years of age, and emotion regulation was observed in the preschool classrooms attended by the children at age 5, using the California child Q-sort to derive an Emotion Regulation Q-Scale. Results showed that the combined influence of both parent-child attachment security predicted better emotion regulation results, than did the specific contributions of each parent per se. Findings are consistent with integrative approaches that highlight the value of including both mother- and father-child attachment relationships, as well as their combined effect, when studying emotion regulation.

There is a lack of instruments assessing child-caregiver attachment relationships in early childhood to be used in attachment-based practice, in particular from a caregiver's perception, which is an important factor of clinical importance to take into account in parenting interventions targeting young children. Therefore, the 48-item Attachment Relationship Inventory-Caregiver Perception 2-5 years (ARI-CP 2-5) was developed. Survey data of 446 caregivers of 2- to 5-year-old children were collected, and a subsample of 83 caregivers participated in an observation study. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed a four-factor structure of secure, avoidant, ambivalent, and disorganized attachment relationship. Indications of configural, metric, and scalar invariance were found for caregivers' and children's sex, children's age, and population (clinical vs. general population). The four scales showed sufficient internal consistency and significant associations with children's psychopathology, caregivers' general attachment representations, caregivers' mind-mindedness, and population type. Moreover, preliminary evidence for convergent validity with observational attachment measures was found. It is concluded that the ARI-CP 2-5 is a valid instrument that can be used as part of the screening and assessment of insecure attachment relationships.


Hacen falta instrumentos que evalúen las relaciones de afectividad niño-cuidador en la temprana niñez para ser usados en la práctica que se basa en la afectividad, en particular desde la perspectiva del cuidador, lo cual es un factor clave de importancia clínica para tomar en cuenta en las intervenciones de crianza que se enfocan en niños pequeños. Por tanto, se desarrolló el Inventario de la Relación Afectiva - Percepción del Cuidador 2-5 años, que consta de 48 aspectos (ARI-CP 2-5). Se recogió información de encuesta de 446 cuidadores de niños de 2 a 5 años de edad, y un subgrupo muestra de 83 cuidadores participó en un estudio de observación. Los análisis de factores confirmatorios corroboraron una estructura de cuatro factores de la relación de afectividad que es segura, la que evita, la ambivalente y la desorganizada. Se encontraron indicaciones de invariabilidad en el aspecto configuracional, métrico y de escala en cuanto al género sexual de los cuidadores y del niño, la edad del niño, y la población (clínica y general). Las cuatro escalas mostraron una suficiente consistencia interna y asociaciones significativas con la sicopatología de los niños, las representaciones generales de afectividad del cuidador, la conciencia mental de los cuidadores, así como el tipo de población. Es más, se encontró una evidencia preliminar para la validez convergente con las medidas de afectividad de observación. Se concluye con que el ARI-CP 2-5 es un instrumento válido que puede usarse como parte de la detección y evaluación de las relaciones de afectividad inseguras.


Il y a un manque d'instruments évaluant les relations d'attachement enfant-aidant naturel dans la petite enfance pouvant être utilisés dans une pratique basée sur l'attachement, en particulier sur la perception de l'aidant naturel, qui est un facteur important de l'importance clinique à prendre en compte dans les interventions de parentages ciblant les jeunes enfants. Par conséquent l'Inventaire de 48 articles de la Relation d'Attachement - Perception de l'Aidant Naturel 2-5 ans (abrégé en anglais ARI-CP 2-5) a été développé. Les données de sondage de 446 aidants naturels d'enfants de 2 à 5 ans ont été recueillies et un sous-échantillon de 83 aidants naturels ont participé à une étude d'observation. Une analyse factorielle confirmatoire a confirmé une structure à quatre facteurs de la relation d'attachement sécure, évitant, ambivalent et désorganisé. Des indications d'invariance configurale, métrique et scalaire ont été trouvées pour le sexe des aidants naturels et des enfants, l'âge des enfants, et la population (clinique par rapport à population générale). Les quatre échelles ont démontré une cohérence interne suffisante et des associations importantes avec la psychopathologie des enfants, les représentations de l'attachement générale des aidants naturels, l'esprit-qualité mentale et le type de population. De plus une preuve préliminaire de validité convergente ave les mesures observationnelles d'attachement a été trouvée. Nous concluons que l'ARI-CP 205 est un instrument valide qui peut être utilisé pour le dépistage et l'évaluation de relations d'attachement insécures.

OBJECTIVES: The present pilot study examined the associations between attachment relationships, psychological problems, and negative automatic thoughts among late adolescents in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. SUBJECTS: A total of 98 participants (male = 49, female = 49) were recruited from government colleges in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. METHODS: The measures used to assess the research variables of this cross sectional study were the Inventory of Parent-Peer Attachment (IPPA-Urdu), Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-Urdu), and the Automatic Thought Questionnaire (ATQ-Urdu). RESULTS: All of these measures had good reliabilities. Findings of the correlation analyses demonstrated that maternal, paternal and peer attachment relationships were negatively related to symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as to negative automatic thoughts. On the other hand, depressive and anxiety symptoms were positively associated with negative automatic thoughts. Additionally, findings suggested that future studies must investigate adolescents from two-parent households and exclude those with only one living parent. CONCLUSION: The results underscored the need for further investigations of the linkages between attachment relationships, negative automatic thoughts and psychological problems on larger samples.

The main goal of this study was to explore the contributions of early father-child and mother-child attachment relationships to children's later social competence with their preschool peers; possible unique and shared contributions were tested. Using a multi-method design and focusing on direct observation, attachment was assessed at home at age 3 with the Attachment Behavior Q-sort (AQS) and two years later social competence was assessed at classrooms of 5-year-olds using a set of seven measurement indicators that are part of the Hierarchical Model of Social Competence. Results show that attachment to each parent made unique and significant contributions to children's social competence and suggested the possibility that each caregiver may have somewhat different patterns of influence on the different indicators of children's social competence. Findings also suggest the possibility that a secure attachment with one parent may buffer the impact of having an insecure relationship with the other. Due to sample size, these results should be seen as a starting point to generate new and larger studies.

Insecure attachment to parents consistently correlates with adolescent depression. However, the order of cause and effect, the impact of confounding, and gender disparities in this relationship remain unresolved. The present study therefore examined the prospective associations between attachment relationships to mothers and fathers and depressive symptoms in a community sample of Spanish children (n = 904; 49.4% females) assessed biennially from age 10-16 years, net of all unmeasured time-invariant confounding. Insecure relationships predicted depressive symptoms, and more so among girls, but depressive symptoms also forecasted worsened attachment relationships. At ages 12-14, mother-child attachment proved to be more important for the development of depressive symptoms than father-child attachment. These findings reveal a pattern of reciprocal influence between attachment relationships and depressive symptoms that appears to vary as a function of the parental and child's gender and developmental period. Thus, efforts aimed at strengthening the parent-child attachment relationship-across the transition from middle childhood to adolescence-may prevent or reduce depressive symptoms, especially by targeting mothers and female adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This article outlines an approach to assessing the quality of relationships between young foster children and their carers. These children are at high risk of disorganised attachment relationships and of developmental psychopathology given their relational experiences prior to and in care. During a semi-structured play interaction the emphasis is on identifying behaviours of clinical interest. This can be complex given the likelihood of atypical or unexpected behaviours expressed within relationships. METHOD: The paper draws on literature on the clinical application of attachment theory to the assessment of relationships and on the authors' experience of developing and delivering an assessment and intervention service for children aged 0 to 5-years-old within a mental health service for children in foster care. Clinical material is used to illustrate and develop the issues. CONCLUSION: The case for including a semi-structured observational procedure as part of a comprehensive assessment of foster children and their carers is outlined. This is argued to have more clinical utility than formal approaches to attachment classification. The benefits of including a semi-structured and relational approach to clinical assessment of foster children are outlined along with the need to be cautious in the use of attachment related terminology when formal assessments have not been undertaken.

The effect of mothers’ age and the participation in the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on attachment relationships, was studied in a group of mothers and their infants from low socioeconomic status sample. The mother–infant interaction was observed in daily situations, finding out that the KMC increases the mother’s sensitivity and decreases the negative effects of poverty, prematurity, hospitalisation and teenage maternity on infant security. The KMC does not increase the possibility that the infants establish insecure attachment relationships. These findings provide necessary evidence for the development of prevention-intervention programs for high risk populations.


Este estudio investigó el efecto de la edad materna y la participación en el Programa Madre Canguro (PMC) sobre el la relación de apego establecida en un grupo de madres y bebés de estrato socioeconómico bajo. Las díadas se agruparon dependiendo de, a) la edad de las madres al momento del parto (madres adolescentes y madres adultas); y b) la participación de los bebés en el PMC (bebés canguro y bebés no-canguro). La evaluación de las interacciones madre-bebé se llevó a cabo a través de observaciones naturalistas en las casas de las familias. Los resultados indicaron que el programa de atención alternativo para los bebés de bajo peso al nacer, el PMC, incrementa la sensibilidad materna y disminuye el efecto negativo de variables como la pobreza, la prematurez, la hospitalización y separación temprana, y la maternidad adolescente sobre la primera relación de apego. Se encontró además que el PMC no incrementa la posibilidad de establecer relaciones de apego inseguras entre los bebés y sus madres; al contrario, la participación en el PMC se constituyó como un factor de protección para éstas díadas. Los resultados proveen insumos útiles para el desarrollo de programas de prevención-intervención dirigidos a poblaciones de alto riesgo, a la vez que contribuyen al fortalecimiento de conceptos, áreas de análisis y metodologías propias de la teoría del apego en el contexto colombiano.
