Bisphenols are a group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals used worldwide for the production of plastics and resins. Bisphenol A (BPA), the main bisphenol, exhibits many unwanted effects. BPA has, currently, been replaced with bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) in many applications in the hope that these molecules have a lesser effect on metabolism than BPA. Since bisphenols tend to partition into the lipid phase, their place of choice would be the cellular membrane. In this paper, I carried out molecular dynamics simulations to compare the localization and interactions of BPA, BPF, and BPS in a complex membrane. This study suggests that bisphenols tend to be placed at the membrane interface, they have no preferred orientation inside the membrane, they can be in the monomer or aggregated state, and they affect the biophysical properties of the membrane lipids. The properties of bisphenols can be attributed, at least in part, to their membranotropic effects and to the modulation of the biophysical membrane properties. The data support that both BPF and BPS, behaving in the same way in the membrane as BPA and with the same capacity to accumulate in the biological membrane, are not safe alternatives to BPA.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), redefined as Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), is characterized by an extensive multi-organ involvement. MAFLD-induced systemic inflammatory status and peripheral metabolic alteration lead to an impairment of cerebral function. Herein, we investigated a panel of leptin-related inflammatory mediators as predictive biomarkers of neuroinflammation and evaluated the possible role of Bergamot Polyphenolic Fraction (BPF) in counteracting this MAFLD-induced inflammatory cascade. Male DIAMOND mice were randomly assigned to fed chow diet and tap water or high fat diet with sugar water. Starting from week 16, mice were further divided and treated with vehicle or BPF (50 mg/kg/day), via gavage, until week 30. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed at the baseline and at week 30. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to discriminate the altered lipid metabolism in the onset of cerebral alterations. Steatohepatitis led to an increase in leptin levels, resulting in a higher expression of proinflammatory mediators. The inflammatory biomarkers involved in leptin/CCL3-CCL4 axes were correlated with the altered thalamus energetic metabolism and the white matter degeneration. BPF administration restored leptin level, improved glucose and lipid metabolism, and reduced chronic low-grade inflammatory mediators, resulting in a prevention of white matter degeneration, alterations of thalamus metabolism and brain atrophy. The highlighted positive effect of BPF, mediated by the downregulation of the inflammatory biomarkers involved in leptin/CCL3-CCL4 axes, affording novel elements to candidate BPF for the development of a therapeutic strategy aimed at counteracting MAFLD-related brain inflammation.

We compare, the prevalence, fate, and sources of Bisphenol A both globally and in India. India has the highest concentration of BPA and Bisphenol S(BPS) in general, with vegetables, particularly corn, beans, strings, and raw or canned vegetables, being the largest contributors. Among all the matrices, bisphenols (BPs) are found in the highest concentration in food, followed by surface water, wastewater, and indoor dust. BPA, BPS, and BPF are the most commonly reported analogues in India, with BPA being the most dominant category used worldwide. The highest concentration of BPs is observed in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana that are three major agricultural states of India however, there is still a research gap regarding the dietary exposure to BPs on an individual level. Environmentally detected BPA occurs in a range of below detection to 10636 ng. L-1, with significant geographic variations. Interestingly, the order of abundance in India was maximum for BPS, which is contrary to the global average, where BPA is observed as most abundant. BPS is found to be the most common BPs analogue in surface water worldwide, with limited removal efficiency by both naturally remediation and conventional treatment methods. Similar patterns were observed in the US-India and Japan-Korea regions in terms of their source-sink-prevalence-fate dynamics. The probability of exceeding safe concentrations of BPs is higher in India and Korea, suggesting that these countries are more vulnerable to high prevalence concentrations and the subsequent public health hazards.

Introduction: Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are known to interfere with endocrine homeostasis. Their impact on the adrenal cortex and steroidogenesis has not yet been sufficiently elucidated. This applies in particular to the ubiquitously available bisphenols A (BPA), F (BPF), and S (BPS). Methods: NCI-H295R adrenocortical cells were exposed to different concentrations (1nM-1mM) of BPA, BPF, BPS, and an equimolar mixture of them (BPmix). After 72 hours, 15 endogenous steroids were measured using LC-MS/MS. Ratios of substrate and product of CYP-regulated steps were calculated to identify most influenced steps of steroidogenesis. mRNA expression of steroidogenic enzymes was determined by real-time PCR. Results: Cell viability remained unaffected at bisphenol concentrations lower than 250 µM. All tested bisphenols and their combination led to extensive alterations in the quantified steroid levels. The most profound fold changes (FC) in steroid concentrations after exposure to BPA (>10µM) were seen for androstenedione, e.g. a 0.37±0.11-fold decrease at 25µM (p≤0.0001) compared to vehicle-treated controls. For BPF, levels of 17-hydroxyprogesterone were significantly increased by 25µM (FC 2.57±0.49, p≤0.001) and 50µM (FC 2.65±0.61, p≤0.0001). BPS treatment led to a dose-dependent decrease of 11-deoxycorticosterone at >1µM (e.g. FC 0.24±0.14, p≤0.0001 at 10µM). However, when combining all three bisphenols, additive effects were detected: e.g. 11-deoxycortisosterone was decreased at doses >10µM (FC 0.27±0.04, p≤0.0001, at 25µM), whereas 21-deoxycortisol was increased by 2.92±0.20 (p≤0.01) at 10µM, and by 3.21±0.45 (p≤0.001) at 50µM. While every measured androgen (DHEA, DHEAS, androstenedione, testosterone, DHT) was lowered in all experiments, estradiol levels were significantly increased by BPA, BPF, BPS, and BPmix (e.g. FC 3.60±0.54, p≤0.0001 at 100µM BPF). Calculated substrate-product ratios indicated an inhibition of CYP17A1-, and CYP21A2 mediated conversions, whereas CYP11B1 and CYP19A1 showed higher activity in the presence of bisphenols. Based on these findings, most relevant mRNA expression of CYP genes were analysed. mRNA levels of StAR, CYP11B1, and CYP17A1 were significantly increased by BPF, BPS, and BPmix. Discussion: In cell culture, bisphenols interfere with steroidogenesis at non-cytotoxic levels, leading to compound-specific patterns of significantly altered hormone levels. These results justify and call for additional in-vivo studies to evaluate effects of EDCs on adrenal gland functionality.

Background and Objective: Persistent air leak (PAL) represents a challenging medical condition characterized by prolonged air leak from the lung parenchyma into the pleural cavity, often associated with alveolar-pleural fistula or bronchopleural fistula (BPF). The objective of this narrative review is to explore the causes, clinical implications, and the evolving landscape of bronchoscopic treatment options for PAL. Methods: The literature search for this review was conducted using databases such as PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus databases. Articles published from inception until 28th August, 2023, focusing on studies that discussed the causes, diagnosis, and management strategies for PAL were included. Keywords included bronchoscopic management, bronchopleural fistula, endobronchial valve, sealant, blood patch pleurodesis, spigot, air leak, PAL, management, comparative study. Key Content and Findings: PAL commonly arises from secondary spontaneous pneumothorax, necrotizing pneumonia, barotrauma induced by mechanical ventilation, chest trauma, or postoperative complications. Understanding the underlying etiology is crucial for tailoring effective management strategies. While conventional intercostal drainage resolves the majority of pneumothorax cases, PAL is diagnosed when the air leak persists beyond 5 to 7 days. Prolonged PAL can lead to worsening pneumothorax, respiratory distress, and increased morbidity. Early identification and intervention are essential to prevent complications. Conservative approaches involve close monitoring and supplemental oxygen therapy. These strategies aim to promote natural healing and resolution of the air leak without invasive interventions. Bronchoscopic techniques, such as endobronchial valves (EBVs), sealants, and autologous blood patch (ABP), have emerged as promising alternatives for refractory PAL. These interventions offer a targeted and minimally invasive approach to seal the fistulous connection, promoting faster recovery and reducing the need for surgical interventions. Conclusions: PAL is a clinical challenge, and their management requires a tailored approach based on the underlying cause and severity. Bronchoscopic interventions have shown efficacy in cases of refractory PAL. Early recognition, multidisciplinary collaboration, and a personalized treatment plan are essential for optimizing outcomes in patients with PAL.

BACKGROUND: The back-projection strategies such as confidence weighting (CW) and most likely annihilation position (MLAP) have been adopted into back-projection-and-filtering-like (BPF-like) deep reconstruction model and shown great potential on fast and accurate PET reconstruction. Although the two methods degenerate to an identical model at the time resolution of 0 ps, they represent two distinct approaches at the realistic time resolutions of current commercial systems. There is a lack of a systematic and fair assessment on these differences. PURPOSE: This work aims to analyze the impact of back-projection variants on CNN-based PET image reconstruction to find the most effective back-projection model, and ultimately contribute to accurate PET reconstruction. METHODS: Different back-projection strategies (CW and MLAP) and different angular view processing methods (view-summed and view-grouped) were considered, leading to the comparison of four back-projection variants integrated with the same CNN filtration model. Meanwhile, we investigated two strategies of physical effect compensation, either introducing pre-corrected data as the input or adding a channel of attenuation map to the CNN model. After training models separately on Monte-Carlo-simulated BrainWeb phantoms with full dose (events = 3×107), we tested them on both simulated phantoms and clinical brain scans with two dosage levels. For the performance assessment, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and root mean square error (RMSE) were used to evaluate the pixel-wise error, structural similarity index (SSIM) to evaluate the structural similarity, and contrast recovery coefficient (CRC) in manually selected ROI to compare the region recovery. RESULTS: Compared to two MLAP-based histo-image reconstruction models, two CW-based back-projected image methods produced clearer, sharper, and more detailed images, from both simulated and clinical data. For angular view processing methods, view-grouped histo-image improved image quality, while view-grouped cwbp-image showed no advantage except for contrast recovery. Quantitative analysis on simulated data demonstrated that the view-summed cwbp-image model achieved the best PSNR, RMSE, SSIM, while the 8-view cwbp-image model achieved the best CRC in lesions and the white matter. Additionally, the multi-channel input model including the back-projection image and attenuation map was proved to be the most efficient and simplest method for compensating for physical effects for brain data. Applying Gaussian blur to the histo-image yielded images with limited improvement. All above results hold for both the half-dose and the full-dose cases. CONCLUSION: For brain imaging, the evaluation based on metrics PSNR, RMSE, SSIM, and CRC indicates that the view-summed CW-based back-projection variant is the most effective input for the BPF-like reconstruction model using CNN filtration, which can involve the attenuation map through an additional channel to effectively compensate for physical effects.

Bisphenol F (BPF) has gained prominence as an alternative to bisphenol A (BPA) in various manufacturing applications, yet being detected in diverse environments and posed potential public health risk. This research aims to elucidate the putative toxic targets and underlying molecular mechanisms of prostate injury induced by exposure to BPF through multi-level bioinformatics data, integrating network toxicology and molecular docking. Systematically leveraging multilevel databases, we determined 276 targets related to BPF and prostate injury. Subsequent screenings through STRING and Cytoscape tool highlighted 27 key targets, including BCL2, HSP90AA1, MAPK3, ESR1, and CASP3. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses demonstrated enrichment of targets involved in apoptosis, abnormal hormonal activities, as well as cancer-related signal transduction cascades, ligand-receptor interaction networks, and endocrine system signaling pathways. Molecular docking simulations conducted via Autodock corroborated high-affinity binding interaction between BPF and key targets. The results indicate that BPF exposure can contribute to the initiation and progression of prostate cancer and prostatic hyperplastic by modulating apoptosis and proliferation, altering nerve function in blood vessel endothelial cells, and disrupting androgen metabolism. This study offers theoretical underpinnings for comprehending the molecular mechanisms implicated in BPF-elicited prostatic toxicity, while concomitantly establishing foundational framework for the development of prophylactic and therapeutic strategies for prostatic injuries related to polycarbonate and epoxy resin plastics incorporated with BPF, as well as environments afflicted by elevated levels of these compounds.

Flupyradifurone (FLU) is a butenolide insecticide that has come onto the market relatively recently. It is used in agriculture to control aphids, psyllids, and whiteflies. Toxicity studies have decreed its low toxicity to honeybees. However, recent research has challenged these claims; oral exposure to the pesticide can lead to behavioral abnormalities and in the worst cases, lethal phenomena. Compounds with antioxidant activity, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, have been shown to protect against the toxic effects of pesticides. The aim of this research was to evaluate the possible protective effect of the bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF) against behavioral abnormalities and lethality induced by toxic doses of FLU orally administered to honeybees under laboratory conditions. Honeybees were assigned to experimental groups in which two toxic doses of FLU, 50 mg/L and 100 mg/L were administered. In other replicates, three doses (1, 2 and 5 mg/kg) of the bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF) were added to the above toxic doses. In the experimental groups intoxicated with FLU at the highest dose tested, all caged subjects (20 individuals) died within the second day of administration. The survival probability of the groups to which the BPF was added was compared to that of the groups to which only the toxic doses of FLU were administered. The mortality rate in the BPF groups was statistically lower (p < 0.05) than in the intoxicated groups; in addition, a lower percentage of individuals exhibited behavioral abnormalities. According to this research, the ingestion of the BPF attenuates the harmful effects of FLU. Further studies are needed before proposing BPF incorporation into the honeybees' diet, but there already seem to be beneficial effects associated with its intake.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of bisphenol A (BPA) and its substitute, bisphenol F (BPF), on the colonic fecal community structure and function of mice. Methods: We exposed 6-8-week-old male C57BL/6 mice to 5 mg/(kg∙day) and 50 µg/(kg∙day) of BPA or BPF for 14 days. Fecal samples from the colon were analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Results: Gut microbiome community richness and diversity, species composition, and function were significantly altered in mice exposed to BPA or BPF. This change was characterized by elevated levels of Ruminococcaceae UCG-010 and Oscillibacter and decreased levels of Prevotella 9 and Streptococcus. Additionally, pathways related to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism showed substantial enrichment. Conclusion: Mice exposed to different BP analogs exhibited distinct gut bacterial community richness, composition, and related metabolic pathways. Considering the essential role of gut bacteria in maintaining intestinal homeostasis, our study highlights the intestinal toxicity of BPs in vertebrates.

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have suggested exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and its alternatives, such as bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS), may exert adverse effects on ovarian reserve, but human evidence is limited. Moreover, the potential predictors of exposure to bisphenols among women seeking infertility treatment have not been reported. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether individual or mixture of BPA, BPF, and BPS were related to antral follicle count (AFC), and further identify the predictors of exposure to bisphenols among women seeking assisted reproductive treatment. METHODS: A total of 111 women from a reproductive center in Shenyang, China were enrolled in this study from September 2020 to February 2021. The concentrations of urinary BPA, BPF, and BPS were measured using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadruple mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). AFC was measured by two infertility physicians through transvaginal ultrasonography on the 2-5 days of a natural cycle. Demographic characteristics, dietary habits, and lifestyles were obtained by questionnaires. The associations between individual and mixture of urinary bisphenols concentrations (BPA, BPF, and BPS) and AFC were assessed by the Poisson regression models and the quantile-based g-computation (QGC) model, respectively. The potential predictors of exposure to bisphenols were identified by the multivariate linear regression models. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounders, elevated urinary concentrations of BPA, BPF and BPS were associated with reduced AFC (ß = -0.016; 95%CI: -0.025, -0.006 in BPA; ß = -0.017; 95%CI: -0.029, -0.004 in BPF; ß = -0.128; 95%CI: -0.197, -0.060 in BPS). A quantile increase in the bisphenols mixture was negatively associated with AFC (ß = -0.101; 95%CI: -0.173, -0.030). Intake of fried food had higher urinary concentrations of BPF, BPS, and total bisphenols (∑BPs) than women who did not eat, and age was related to increased urinary BPF concentrations. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that exposure to individual BPA, BPF, BPS and bisphenol mixtures were associated with impaired ovarian reserve. Furthermore, the intake of fried food, as identified in this study, could serve as an important bisphenols exposure route for reproductive-aged women.

The F-box gene family is abundant in plants and crucial for plant growth and development. However, two questions prevail: Which F-box genes are involved in regulating plant biological processes? How do these genes regulate such biological processes? In this study, we characterized the F-box family and identified 240 F-box genes in birch (Betula platyphylla Suk.) via HMMER analysis. According to the C-terminal conserved domains, the F-box members were divided into 10 subfamilies. Through phylogenetic analysis, the F-box proteins were clustered into eight evolutionary branches. Synteny analyses suggested that the birch F-box gene family exhibits tandem and segmental duplication events. GO annotation analysis revealed that BpF-box proteins respond to stimuli, and regulate the defense response. According to RNA-Seq analysis, we found that 11 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are responsive to osmotic stress. We performed co-expression analysis on the representative genes, and GO enrichment analysis further revealed that representative plant genes participate in the regulation of hormones, growth, and development. Through qRT-PCR, we found that the representative BpF-box genes are mainly involved in hormone response signaling pathways. It appears that the F-box gene family plays a significant role in the regulation of birch osmotic stress responses through the regulation of different hormones. Our results provided novel insights into the biological function of BpF-box proteins.

Pesticide-induced poisoning phenomena are a serious problem for beekeeping and can cause large losses of honeybee populations due to acute and sub-acute poisoning. The reduced responsiveness of honeybees to the damage caused by pesticides used in agriculture can be traced back to a general qualitative and quantitative impoverishment of the nectar resources of terrestrial ecosystems. Malnutrition is associated with a decline in the functionality of the immune system and the systems that are delegated to the detoxification of the organism. This research aimed to verify whether bergamot polyphenolic extract (BPF) could have protective effects against poisoning by the pyrethroid pesticide deltamethrin. The studies were conducted with caged honeybees under controlled conditions. Sub-lethal doses of pesticides and related treatments for BPF were administered. At a dose of 21.6 mg/L, deltamethrin caused mortality in all treated subjects (20 caged honeybees) after one day of administration. The groups where BPF (1 mg/kg) was added to the toxic solution recorded the survival of honeybees by up to three days. Comparing the honeybees of the groups in which the BPF-deltamethrin association was added to the normal diet (sugar solution) with those in which deltamethrin alone was added to the normal diet, the BPF group had a statistically significant reduction in the honeybee mortality rate (p ≤ 0.05) and a greater consumption of food. Therefore, it can be argued that the inclusion of BPF and its constituent antioxidants in the honeybee diet reduces toxicity and oxidative stress caused by oral intake of deltamethrin. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a representative endocrine-disrupting chemical that exhibits hormonal disturbance reactions. Various alternatives, such as Bisphenol S (BPS) and Bisphenol F (BPF), are being developed. BPS and BPF (which are representative alternatives to BPA) are used in consumer products such as polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. They have structures similar to those of BPA and have also been proven to be exogenous endocrine disruptors. However, although there are many studies on BPA, there are few studies on the neurodevelopmental effects of BPS and BPF. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed neurobehavioral changes in offspring mice exposed to BPS and BPF during brain development by administering BPS and BPF to pregnant mice. We found that prenatal exposure to BPS and BPF did not affect anxiety-and depression-like behaviors, locomotion, sociability, memory, or cognition functions in offspring mice. However, exposure to BPS and BPF decreased the preference for social novelty in the offspring mice. Taken together, these findings suggest that perinatal exposure to BPS and BPF affects changes in social behaviors, but not other behavioral changes such as emotion, memory, or cognition in the offspring mice.

This paper presents a novel synthesis of a quasi-Chebyshev Nth order stub-loaded coupled-line ultra-wideband bandpass filter. A unit element of a proposed filter topology consists of two short-circuited stubs loaded at the edges of coupled lines. A distributed equivalent circuit model of a proposed topology is extracted and used to acquire a generalized filtering function. The extracted filtering function is of rational form. The denominator of the filtering function causes a mismatch with Chebyshev type-I polynomials. For conventional narrowband filters, the denominator term can be neglected because of the close vicinity of band-edge frequencies; however, for the ultra-wideband filter response, the factor in the denominator cannot be neglected and hence requires a new mathematical procedure to compensate for the effect of the frequency-dependent term in the denominator. The electrical parameters are calculated using the proposed synthesis and used to design an ideal filter topology on ADS. To validate the proposed design procedure, fabrication is performed on a high-frequency substrate. The proposed filter is miniaturized in size and has good out-of-band performance. The simulated and measured results provide good agreement.

With the limitation of the use of bisphenol A (BPA), the production of its substitutes, bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (4,4'-BPF) is increasing. Understanding the fate and transport of BPA and its substitutes in porous media can help reduce their risk of contaminating soil and groundwater systems. In this study, column and batch adsorption experiments were performed with 14C-labeled bisphenol analogs and combined with mathematical models to investigate the interaction of BPA, BPS, 4,4'-BPF, 2,2'-BPF, and 2,4'-BPF with four standard soils with different soil organic matter (SOM) contents. The results show that the transport capacity of BPS and 4,4'-BPF in the saturated soils is significantly stronger than that of BPA. Meanwhile, the mobility of the three isomers of bisphenol F exhibits variability in saturated soils with high SOM content. The two-site nonequilibrium sorption model was applied to simulate and interpret column experimental data, and model simulations described the interactions between the bisphenol analogs and soil very well. The fitting results underscore SOM's role in providing dynamic adsorption sites for bisphenol analogs. Hydrophobicity primarily accounts for the disparity in adsorption affinity between BPA, BPS, 4,4'-BPF, and soil, whereas hydrogen bonding forces may predominantly influence the differential adsorption affinity between 4,4'-BPF and its isomers and soil. The results of this study indicate that BPS and three isomers of BPF, as alternatives to BPA, have higher mobility in saturated soils and may pose a substantial risk to groundwater quality. This study enhances our understanding of bisphenol analogs' behavior in natural soils, facilitating an assessment of their environmental implications, particularly regarding groundwater contamination.

RESUMO

As one of the most successful modified phenolic resins, boron-modified phenolic resin (BPF) has excellent heat resistance and ablative resistance, good mechanical and wear resistance, and flame retardancy. BPF and its composites can be widely used in areas such as aerospace, weapons and equipment, automobile brakes, and fire retardants. In this review, the current state of development of BPF and its composites is presented and discussed. After introducing various methods to synthesize BPF, functionalization of BPF is briefly summarized. Particular emphasis is placed on general methods used to fabricate BPF-based composites and the heat resistance, ablative resistance, mechanical property, wear resistance, flame retardancy, and water resistance of BPF-based composites. Finally, the challenges of this research area are summarized and its future outlook is prospected.

Background: Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) after lobectomy for lung cancer is a rare but serious complication. This study aimed to stratify the risk factors of BPF. Methods: Patients who underwent lobectomy without bronchoplasty and preoperative treatment for lung cancer between 2005 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. We examined the association between the incidence of BPF and background factors, including comorbidities, preoperative blood test results, respiratory function, surgical procedure, and extent of lymphadenectomy. Results: Among the 3,180 patients who underwent lobectomy, 14 (0.44%) developed BPF. The median interval from surgery to BPF onset was 21 days (range, 10-287). Two of the 14 patients died of BPF (mortality rate, 14%). All 14 patients who developed BPF were men and had undergone right lower lobectomy. Other factors significantly associated with the development of BPF were older age, heavy smoking, obstructive ventilatory failure, interstitial pneumonia, history of malignancy, history of gastric cancer surgery, low serum albumin levels, and histology. Multivariable analysis in the subgroup of men who underwent right lower lobectomy revealed that high level of serum C-reactive protein and a history of gastric cancer surgery were significantly associated with BPF, whereas bronchial stump coverage was inversely associated with BPF. Conclusions: Men who underwent right lower lobectomy were at increased risk of BPF. The risk was higher when the patient had high serum C-reactive protein or a history of gastric cancer surgery. Bronchial stump coverage might be effective in patients at high risk of BPF.
