BACKGROUND: Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has the advantage of rapid anion analysis, when employing a reverse electroosmotic flow (EOF). The conventional CE method utilizes dynamic coatings with surfactants like cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the run buffer to reverse the EOF. However, this method suffers from very slow equilibration leading to drifting effective migration times of the analyte anions, which adversely affects the identification and quantification of peaks. Permanent coating of the capillary surface may obviate this problem but has been relatively little explored. Thus, permanent capillary surface modification by the covalent binding of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was studied as an alternative. RESULTS: This study investigates the effect of APTES concentration for surface functionalization on EOF mobility, separation efficiency, and reproducibility of anion separation. The performance data was complemented by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle (CA) measurements. The XPS measurements showed that the coverage with APTES was dependent on its concentration in the coating solution. The XPS measurements correlated well with the EOF values determined for the capillaries tested. A standard mixture of 21 anions could be baseline separated within 10 min in the capillaries with lower EOF, but not in the capillary with the highest EOF as the residence time of the analytes was too short in this case. Compared to conventional dynamic coating with CTAB, APTES-functionalized capillaries provide faster equilibration and long-term EOF stability. The application of APTES-functionalized capillaries in analyzing different beverages demonstrates the precision, reliability, and specificity in determining organic anions, providing valuable insights of their compositions. SIGNIFICANCE: APTES coating on capillaries provides a facile approach to achieve a permanent reversal of the stable EOF to determine anions. The control of the coverage via the concentration of the reagent solution allows the tailoring of the EOF to different needs, a faster EOF for less complex samples where resolution is not challenging, while a lower EOF for higher complex samples where the focus is on separation efficiency. This enhancement in efficiency and sensitivity has been applied to analyzing organic acids in several beverages.

The concern on the fate and distribution of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) is a burning topic due to their widespread occurrence and potential harmful effects. Particularly, antibiotics have received great attention due to their implications in antimicrobial resistance occurrence. The impact of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is remarkable, being one of the main pathways for the introduction of CECs into aquatic systems. The combination of novel analytical methodologies and risk assessment strategies is a promising tool to find out environmentally relevant compounds posing major concerns in freshwater ecosystems impacted by those wastewater effluents. Within this context, a multi-target approach was applied in three Spanish river basins affected by different WWTP treated effluents for spatio-temporal monitoring of their chemical status. Solid phase extraction followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography were used for the quantification of a large panel of compounds (n = 270), including pharmaceuticals and other consumer products, pesticides and industrial chemicals. To this end, water samples were collected in four sampling campaigns at three locations in each basin: (i) upstream from the WWTPs; (ii) WWTP effluent discharge points (effluent outfall); and (iii) downstream from the WWTPs (500 m downriver from the effluent outfall). Likewise, 24-h composite effluent samples from each of the WWTPs were provided in all sampling periods. First the occurrence and distribution of these compounds were assessed. Diverse seasonal trends were observed depending on the group of emerging compounds, though COVID-19 outbreak affected variations of certain pharmaceuticals. Detection frequencies and concentrations in effluents generally exceeded those in river samples and concentrations measured upstream WWTPs were generally low or non-quantifiable. Finally, risks associated with maximum contamination levels were evaluated using two different approaches to account for antibiotic resistance selection as well. From all studied compounds, 89 evidenced environmental risk on at least one occasion in this study.

This paper introduces a new metaheuristic technique known as the Greater Cane Rat Algorithm (GCRA) for addressing optimization problems. The optimization process of GCRA is inspired by the intelligent foraging behaviors of greater cane rats during and off mating season. Being highly nocturnal, they are intelligible enough to leave trails as they forage through reeds and grass. Such trails would subsequently lead to food and water sources and shelter. The exploration phase is achieved when they leave the different shelters scattered around their territory to forage and leave trails. It is presumed that the alpha male maintains knowledge about these routes, and as a result, other rats modify their location according to this information. Also, the males are aware of the breeding season and separate themselves from the group. The assumption is that once the group is separated during this season, the foraging activities are concentrated within areas of abundant food sources, which aids the exploitation. Hence, the smart foraging paths and behaviors during the mating season are mathematically represented to realize the design of the GCR algorithm and carry out the optimization tasks. The performance of GCRA is tested using twenty-two classical benchmark functions, ten CEC 2020 complex functions, and the CEC 2011 real-world continuous benchmark problems. To further test the performance of the proposed algorithm, six classic problems in the engineering domain were used. Furthermore, a thorough analysis of computational and convergence results is presented to shed light on the efficacy and stability levels of GCRA. The statistical significance of the results is compared with ten state-of-the-art algorithms using Friedman's and Wilcoxon's signed rank tests. These findings show that GCRA produced optimal or nearly optimal solutions and evaded the trap of local minima, distinguishing it from the rival optimization algorithms employed to tackle similar problems. This paper presents an enhanced crayfish optimization algorithm (ECOA). The ECOA includes four improvement strategies. Firstly, the Halton sequence was used to improve the population initialization of the crayfish optimization algorithm. Furthermore, the quasi opposition-based learning strategy is introduced to generate the opposite solution of the population, increasing the algorithm's searching ability. Thirdly, the elite factor guides the predation stage to avoid blindness in this stage. Finally, the fish aggregation device effect is introduced to increase the ability of the algorithm to jump out of the local optimal. This paper performed tests on the widely used IEEE CEC2019 test function set to verify the validity of the proposed ECOA method. The experimental results show that the proposed ECOA has a faster convergence speed, greater performance stability, and a stronger ability to jump out of local optimal compared with other popular algorithms. Finally, the ECOA was applied to two real-world engineering optimization problems, verifying its ability to solve practical optimization problems and its superiority compared to other algorithms.

The sand cat swarm optimization algorithm (SCSO) is a novel metaheuristic algorithm that has been proposed in recent years. The algorithm optimizes the search ability of individuals by mimicking the hunting behavior of sand cat groups in nature, thereby achieving robust optimization performance. It is characterized by few control parameters and simple operation. However, due to the lack of population diversity, SCSO is less efficient in solving complex problems and is prone to fall into local optimization. To address these shortcomings and refine the algorithm's efficacy, an improved multi-strategy sand cat optimization algorithm (IMSCSO) is proposed in this paper. In IMSCSO, a roulette fitness-distance balancing strategy is used to select codes to replace random agents in the exploration phase and enhance the convergence performance of the algorithm. To bolster population diversity, a novel population perturbation strategy is introduced, aiming to facilitate the algorithm's escape from local optima. Finally, a best-worst perturbation strategy is developed. The approach not only maintains diversity throughout the optimization process but also enhances the algorithm's exploitation capabilities. To evaluate the performance of the proposed IMSCSO, we conducted experiments in the CEC 2017 test suite and compared IMSCSO with seven other algorithms. The results show that the IMSCSO proposed in this paper has better optimization performance.

This study presents an advanced metaheuristic approach termed the Enhanced Gorilla Troops Optimizer (EGTO), which builds upon the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) to enhance the search capabilities of the Gorilla Troops Optimizer (GTO). Like numerous other metaheuristic algorithms, the GTO encounters difficulties in preserving convergence accuracy and stability, notably when tackling intricate and adaptable optimization problems, especially when compared to more advanced optimization techniques. Addressing these challenges and aiming for improved performance, this paper proposes the EGTO, integrating high and low-velocity ratios inspired by the MPA. The EGTO technique effectively balances exploration and exploitation phases, achieving impressive results by utilizing fewer parameters and operations. Evaluation on a diverse array of benchmark functions, comprising 23 established functions and ten complex ones from the CEC2019 benchmark, highlights its performance. Comparative analysis against established optimization techniques reveals EGTO's superiority, consistently outperforming its counterparts such as tuna swarm optimization, grey wolf optimizer, gradient based optimizer, artificial rabbits optimization algorithm, pelican optimization algorithm, Runge Kutta optimization algorithm (RUN), and original GTO algorithms across various test functions. Furthermore, EGTO's efficacy extends to addressing seven challenging engineering design problems, encompassing three-bar truss design, compression spring design, pressure vessel design, cantilever beam design, welded beam design, speed reducer design, and gear train design. The results showcase EGTO's robust convergence rate, its adeptness in locating local/global optima, and its supremacy over alternative methodologies explored.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), also known as veno-occlusive disease (VOD), is a rare but potentially fatal complication following allogenic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). Timely identification of SOS/VOD to allow for prompt treatment is critical, but identifying a VOD-predictive biomarker remains challenging. Given the pivotal role of endothelial dysfunction in SOS/VOD pathophysiology, the CECinVOD study prospectively evaluated levels of circulating endothelial cells (CECs) in patients undergoing allo-HCT with a myeloablative conditioning (MAC) regimen to investigate the potential of CEC level in predicting and diagnosing SOS/VOD. A total of 150 patients from 11 Italian bone marrow transplantation units were enrolled. All participants were age >18 years and received a MAC regimen, putting them at elevated risk of developing SOS/VOD. Overall, 6 cases of SOS/VOD (4%) were recorded. CECs were detected using the Food and Drug Administration-approved CellSearch system, an immunomagnetic selection-based platform incorporating ferrofluid nanoparticles and fluorescent-labeled antibodies, and were defined as CD146+, CD105+, DAPI+, or CD45-. Blood samples were collected at the following time points: before (T0) and at the end of conditioning treatment (T1), at neutrophil engraftment (T2), and at 7 to 10 days postengraftment (T3). For patients who developed VOD, additional samples were collected at any suspected or proven VOD onset (T4) and weekly during defibrotide treatment (T5 to T8). A baseline CEC count >17/mL was associated with an elevated risk of SOS/VOD (P = .04), along with bilirubin level >1.5 mg/mL and a haploidentical donor hematopoietic stem cell source. Postconditioning regimen (T1) CEC levels were elevated (P = .02), and levels were further increased at engraftment (P < .0001). Additionally, patients developing SOS/VOD after engraftment, especially those with late-onset SOS/VOD, showed a markedly higher relative increase (>150%) in CEC count. Multivariate analysis supported these findings, along with a high Endothelial Activation and Stress Index (EASIX) score at engraftment (T2). Finally, CEC kinetics corresponded with defibrotide treatment. After the start of therapy (T4), CEC levels showed an initial increase in the first week (T5), followed by a progressive decrease during VOD treatment (T6 and T7) and a return to pre-SOS/VOD onset levels at resolution of the complication. This prospective multicenter study reveals a low incidence of SOS/VOD in high-risk patients compared to historical data, in line with recent reports. The results from the CECinVOD study collectively confirm the endothelial injury in allo-HCT and its role in in the development of SOS/VOD, suggesting that CEC level can be a valuable biomarker for diagnosing SOS/VOD and identifying patients at greater risk of this complication, especially late-onset SOS/VOD. Furthermore, CEC kinetics may support treatment strategies by providing insight into the optimal timing for discontinuing defibrotide treatment.

The complex work of addressing intergenerational adversities, like violence, abuse, and neglect through perinatal psychotherapy, is understudied. Especially noticeable is the paucity of studies giving voice to the therapists. This study explored therapeutic processes through the perspectives of seven Norwegian therapists. A qualitative approach was chosen with individual interviews and a follow-up focus group. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. We identified one overarching theme: To maintain a reflective therapeutic capacity, and two main themes with associated subthemes: 1) Alliance work when a caring system comes to therapy to fight generations of adversities and 2) The complex therapeutic work of addressing generational adversities in perinatal psychotherapy. Findings from the present study indicate that maintaining a reflective stance is essential yet challenging when addressing intergenerational adversities, requiring a holding environment for the therapists. The primary vehicle of change was perceived as a safe enough therapeutic alliance to explore new ways of being together, contrasting earlier experiences. A key question raised was how to give caregivers enough time to trust the therapist without compromising the safety and development of the child. The essence of the therapeutic work was to reduce risk factors and increase protective factors through multiple ports of entry.


El complejo trabajo de abordar el tema de adversidades intergeneracionales, como violencia, abuso y negligencia a través de la sicoterapia perinatal, no se ha estudiado lo suficiente. Especialmente perceptible es la escasez de estudios que les den voz a los terapeutas. Este estudio exploró los procesos terapéuticos a través de perspectivas de siete terapeutas noruegos. Se escogió un acercamiento cualitativo con entrevistas individuales y un grupo de enfoque como seguimiento. Se analizaron los datos usando un análisis temático reflexivo. Identificamos un tema global: Mantener una capacidad terapéutica reflexiva, así como dos temas principales con subtemas asociados: 1) Trabajo en alianza cuando un sistema de cuidados llega a la terapia, para combatir generaciones de adversidades y 2) El complejo trabajo terapéutico de abordar el tema de adversidades generacionales en la sicoterapia perinatal. Los resultados del presente estudio indicaron que mantener una postura de reflexión es esencial, aunque desafiante, cuando se aborda el tema de adversidades generacionales, lo cual requiere un entorno o espacio favorable para los terapeutas. La percepción es que el vehículo primario para el cambio es una suficientemente segura alianza terapéutica para explorar nuevas maneras de vivir juntos, contrastando las experiencias anteriores. Una pregunta clave que se planteó fue cómo darles a los cuidadores suficiente tiempo para que le tengan confianza al terapeuta sin comprometer la seguridad y el desarrollo del niño. La esencia del trabajo terapéutico fue reducir los factores de riesgo e incrementar los factores de protección por medio de múltiples puertas de entrada.


Le travail complexe qui consiste à s'attaquer aux adversités intergénérationnelles comme la violence, la maltraitance et la négligence au travers de la psychothérapie périnatale est sous-étudié. On constate surtout la rareté d'études donnant la parole aux thérapeutes. Cette étude a exploré les processus thérapeutiques au travers des perspectives de sept thérapeutes norvégiens. Une approche qualitative a été choisie avec des entretiens individuels et un groupe d'étude de suivi. Des données ont été analysées en utilisant une analyse réflective thématique. Nous avons identifié un thème général: maintenir une capacité thérapeutique réflective et deux thèmes principaux avec des sous-thèmes liés: 1) le travail d'alliance quand un système attentif en arrive à la thérapie pour contrecarrer des générations d'adversités et 2) le travail thérapeutique complexe qui consiste à s'attaquer aux adversités intergénérationnelles en psychothérapie périnatale. Les résultats de cette étude ont indiqué que le maintien d'une position de réflexion est essentiel mais pose également un défi lorsqu'on on s'attaque aux adversités intergénérationnelles, exigeant un environnement thérapeutique soutenant pour les thérapeutes. Le principal véhicule de changement a été perçu comme une alliance thérapeutique étant assez sûre pour l'exploration de nouvelles façons d'être ensemble, en contraste avec des expériences précédentes. Une question clé qui a été soulevée était de comment donner aux personnes prenant soin des enfants assez de temps pour avoir confiance au thérapeute sans compromettre la sécurité et le développement de l'enfant. L'essence du travail thérapeutique a consisté à réduire les facteurs de risque et à accroître les facteurs protecteurs au travers de plusieurs ports d'entrée.

While the cotransport of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and clay colloids in porous media has been widely studied, the influence of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clay colloids on the transport process remains unclear. In this study, batch adsorption and column transport experiments were conducted to investigate the fate and transport of CNPs and clay colloids in quartz sand, with respect to the effect of monovalent-cation exchange capacity (mono-CEC), divalent-cation exchange capacity (di-CEC) and total CEC of clays. Fullerene nanoparticles (nC60) and six types of montmorillonite (ML) with different CEC were selected as modeled CNPs and clay colloids, respectively. Transport behavior of nC60 and ML was characterized using breakthrough curves (BTCs) and fitted with two-kinetic-sites colloid transport model. Results of the adsorption experiments showed a good linear correlation between the deposition of nC60 on the sand surface and the di-CEC of ML. Transport of ML and nC60 was inhibited by each other. The calculated mass recovery of nC60, as well as the fitted maximum deposition capacity and attachment rate coefficients of nC60 exhibited a strong linear relationship with the di-CEC of ML. These results indicate that divalent cations in ML interlayers play a significant role in aggregation between nC60 and ML and their cotransport. Through measurements of the particle size and zeta potentials of sole nC60 and mixtures of ML and nC60, FTIR and XPS analysis of nC60 under different conditions, and a release experiment of nC60 in a sand column, it demonstrated cation bridging (Ca2+-π) between nC60 and ML mediated by the divalent cations in ML interlayers. The study highlighted the potential of using di-CEC of clays as an indicator to predict the mobility of nC60 in clay-containing porous media and added insights to the transport behavior of CNPs in porous media.

This research investigated the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and characterized the microbial community across an advanced water treatment (AWT) train consisting of Coagulation/Flocculation/Clarification/Granular Media Filtration (CFCGMF), Ozone-Biological Activated Carbon Filtration (O3/BAC), Granular Activated Carbon filtration, Ultraviolet Disinfection, and Cartridge Filtration (GAC/UV/CF). The AWT train successfully met the goals of CECs and bulk organics removal. The microbial community at each treatment step of the AWT train was characterized using 16S rRNA sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform generated from DNA extracted from liquid and solid (treatment media) samples taken along the treatment train. Differences in the microbial community structure were observed. The dominant operational taxonomic units (OTU) decreased along the treatment train, but the treatment steps did impact the microbial community composition downstream of each unit process. These results provide insights into microbial ecology in advanced water treatment systems, which are influenced and shaped by each treatment step, the microbial community interactions, and their potential metabolic contribution to CECs degradation.

Understanding the drivers of ecosystem stability has been a key focus of modern ecology as the impacts of the Anthropocene become more prevalent and extreme. Marine protected areas (MPAs) are tools used globally to promote biodiversity and mediate anthropogenic impacts. However, assessing the stability of natural ecosystems and responses to management actions is inherently challenging due to the complex dynamics of communities with many interdependent taxa. Using a 12-year time series of subtidal community structure in an MPA network in the Channel Islands (United States), we estimated species interaction strength (competition and predation), prey species synchrony, and temporal stability in trophic networks, as well as temporal variation in sea surface temperature to explore the causal drivers of temporal stability at community and metacommunity scales. At the community scale, only trophic networks in MPAs at Santa Rosa Island showed greater temporal stability than reference sites, likely driven by reduced prey synchrony. Across islands, competition was sometimes greater and predation always greater in MPAs compared with reference sites. Increases in interaction strength resulted in lower temporal stability of trophic networks. Although MPAs reduced prey synchrony at the metacommunity scale, reductions were insufficient to stabilize trophic networks. In contrast, temporal variation in sea surface temperature had strong positive direct effects on stability at the regional scale and indirect effects at the local scale through reductions in species interaction strength. Although MPAs can be effective management strategies for protecting certain species or locations, our findings for this MPA network suggest that temperature variation has a stronger influence on metacommunity temporal stability by mediating species interactions and promoting a mosaic of spatiotemporal variation in community structure of trophic networks. By capturing the full spectrum of environmental variation in network planning, MPAs will have the greatest capacity to promote ecosystem stability in response to climate change.


Efectos de la protección y variación de la temperatura sobre la estabilidad temporal en una red de reservas marinas Resumen El conocimiento sobre las causas de la estabilidad ambiental ha sido un enfoque importante de la ecología moderna conforme el impacto del Antropoceno se vuelve más prevaleciente y extremo. Las áreas marinas protegidas (AMP) son herramientas que se usan en todo el mundo para promover la biodiversidad y mediar el impacto antropogénico. Sin embargo, analizar la estabilidad de los ecosistemas naturales y la respuesta a las acciones de manejo es complicado debido a las dinámicas complejas entre las comunidades y varios taxones interdependientes. Usamos una serie temporal de 12 años de estructura comunitaria submareal en una red de AMP en las Islas del Canal (Estados Unidos) para estimar la fuerza de interacción de las especies (competencia y depredación), la sincronía de las especies depredadas y la estabilidad temporal en las redes tróficas, así como la variación temporal de la temperatura superficial del mar para explorar los factores causales de la estabilidad temporal a escala comunitaria y meta-comunitaria. A nivel de comunidad, sólo las redes tróficas en las AMP de la Isla Santa Rosa mostraron una estabilidad temporal mayor que en los sitios de referencia, probablemente debido a la reducción en la sincronía de presas. Entre las islas, la competencia a veces fue mayor y la depredación siempre fue mayor en las AMP comparadas con los sitios de referencia. Los incrementos en la fuerza de interacción causaron una menor estabilidad temporal en las redes tróficas. Aunque las AMP redujeron la sincronía de presas a nivel meta-comunitario, las reducciones no fueron suficientes para estabilizar las redes tróficas. Por el contrario, la variación temporal de la temperatura en la superficie marina tuvo grandes efectos positivos directos sobre la estabilidad a nivel regional y efectos indirectos a escala local por medio de reducciones en la fuerza de interacción entre las especies. Aunque las AMP pueden ser una estrategia efectiva de manejo para proteger ciertas especies o localidades, nuestros hallazgos en esta red de AMP sugieren que la variación térmica tiene una influencia más fuerte sobre la estabilidad temporal metacomunitaria cuando regula las interacciones entre especies y promueve un mosaico de variación espaciotemporal en la estructura comunitaria de las redes tróficas. BACKGROUND: Probiotics have gained attention for their potential maintaining gut and immune homeostasis. They have been found to confer protection against pathogen colonization, possess immunomodulatory effects, enhance gut barrier functionality, and mitigate inflammation. However, a thorough understanding of the unique mechanisms of effects triggered by individual strains is necessary to optimize their therapeutic efficacy. Probiogenomics, involving high-throughput techniques, can help identify uncharacterized strains and aid in the rational selection of new probiotics. This study evaluates the potential of the Escherichia coli CEC15 strain as a probiotic through in silico, in vitro, and in vivo analyses, comparing it to the well-known probiotic reference E. coli Nissle 1917. Genomic analysis was conducted to identify traits with potential beneficial activity and to assess the safety of each strain (genomic islands, bacteriocin production, antibiotic resistance, production of proteins involved in host homeostasis, and proteins with adhesive properties). In vitro studies assessed survival in gastrointestinal simulated conditions and adhesion to cultured human intestinal cells. Safety was evaluated in BALB/c mice, monitoring the impact of E. coli consumption on clinical signs, intestinal architecture, intestinal permeability, and fecal microbiota. Additionally, the protective effects of both strains were assessed in a murine model of 5-FU-induced mucositis. RESULTS: CEC15 mitigates inflammation, reinforces intestinal barrier, and modulates intestinal microbiota. In silico analysis revealed fewer pathogenicity-related traits in CEC15, when compared to Nissle 1917, with fewer toxin-associated genes and no gene suggesting the production of colibactin (a genotoxic agent). Most predicted antibiotic-resistance genes were neither associated with actual resistance, nor with transposable elements. The genome of CEC15 strain encodes proteins related to stress tolerance and to adhesion, in line with its better survival during digestion and higher adhesion to intestinal cells, when compared to Nissle 1917. Moreover, CEC15 exhibited beneficial effects on mice and their intestinal microbiota, both in healthy animals and against 5FU-induced intestinal mucositis. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the CEC15 strain holds promise as a probiotic, as it could modulate the intestinal microbiota, providing immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects, and reinforcing the intestinal barrier. These findings may have implications for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, particularly some forms of diarrhea.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent in people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Despite the established efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for PTSD in general, evaluation studies on EMDR in ABI patients with PTSD are limited.Objective: The aim of this study is to explore clinical features, treatment characteristics, feasibility and first indications of efficacy of EMDR in adult ABI patients with PTSD.Method: This retrospective consecutive case series included ABI patients, who received at least one session of EMDR for PTSD between January 2013 and September 2020. PTSD symptoms were measured using the Impact of Event Scale (IES) pre- and post-treatment. Affective distress was measured using the Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) pre- and post-treatment of the first target.Results: Sixteen ABI patients (median age 46 years, 50% males), with predominantly moderate or severe TBI (50%) or stroke (25%) were included. Treatment duration was a median of seven sessions. Post-treatment IES scores were significantly lower than pre-treatment scores (p < .001). In 81% of the cases there was an individual statistically and clinically relevant change in IES score. Mean SUD scores of the first target were significantly lower at the end of treatment compared to scores at the start of treatment (p < .001). In 88% of the patients full desensitization to a SUD of 0-1 of the first target was accomplished. Only few adjustments to the standard EMDR protocol were necessary.Conclusions: Findings suggest that EMDR is a feasible, well tolerated and potentially effective treatment for PTSD in ABI patients. For clinical practice in working with ABI patients, it is advised to consider EMDR as a treatment option.


This retrospective consecutive case series (N = 16) explores clinical features, treatment characteristics, feasibility and first indications of efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) in adult patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) and Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).The results suggest that EMDR is a feasible and potentially efficacious treatment for PTSD in ABI patients, as patients demonstrated statistically and clinically significant large sized reductions in PTSD-symptoms after EMDR treatment.For clinical practice in working with ABI patients, we advise to consider EMDR as a treatment option.

Chromatographic column is the core of chromatographic separation, and chromatographic separation material is considered the soul of the chromatographic column. The type and characteristics of the chromatographic separation material directly determine the separation mode and performance of chromatographic columns. The development and preparation of separation materials with novel structures and good separation performance is an ongoing hotspot in chromatography research. Given rapid developments in nanoscience and technology, nanomaterials with unique surface functional groups and large specific surface areas have attracted extensive attention and great interest from researchers in the field of separation science. Carbon dots (CDs), a new type of zero-dimensional fluorescent carbon nanomaterials, have been widely used in bioimaging, light-emitting diodes, sensing, catalysis, drug delivery, and other applications since they were first reported in 2004. These nanomaterials present several advantages over other types of separation materials, including a simple preparation process, low toxicity, easy functionalization, excellent biocompatibility, and photobleaching resistance. In addition, compared with traditional carbon nanomaterials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, CDs have abundant surface functional groups, nanoscale sizes, and moderate adsorption properties. Hence, when CDs-based new materials are applied as a stationary phase for column chromatography, they can provide rich reaction sites and ensure the uniformity of the chromatographic packing process. The use of CDs can effectively avoid the peak-tailing phenomenon caused by the strong interaction of large π-conjugated systems with some analytes and improve the efficiency of the chromatographic column. As such, these nanomaterials show good application prospects in the field of chromatographic separation. In this review, the development history, classification, and synthesis strategies of CDs are briefly described. We then focus on the development of CDs-based chromatographic separation materials by systematically reviewing the recent advances in the use of CDs-based materials as a stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography (including hydrophilic interaction, reversed-phase, mixed-mode, and chiral chromatography), gas chromatography, and capillary electrochromatography, with special emphasis on the preparation methods and applications of various stationary phases. Finally, the development prospects of CDs and future research efforts on these materials are also analyzed and discussed. This review can provide guidance on the rational design and application of new CDs-based chromatographic separation materials.

Porous organic cages (POCs) are a unique type of microporous materials composed of discrete molecules with internal cavities that are accessible to various compounds. In this study, a prismatic chiral POC with good thermochemical stability was synthesized by condensing (1R,2R)-diaminocyclohexane and 3,3',5,5'-teturonic-4,4'-biphenediol via the Schiff base reaction and characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy. The IR spectrum of the POC revealed a strong characteristic absorption peak at 1635 cm-1, indicating that it formed imine bonds (C=N). The absorption peak at 3425 cm-1 was attributed to the stretching vibrations of -OH, the absorption peaks at 2925 and 2858 cm-1 were attributed to the stretching vibrations of N=C-H and C-H, and the absorption peaks at 1446 and 1383 cm-1 were attributed to the stretching vibrations of C=C-H and C=C in the benzene ring. High-resolution mass spectral analysis of the POC showed a molecular ion peak at m/z 1363.7228, indicating its successful synthesis. TGA was performed from 25 to 800 ℃ at a rate of 10 ℃/min, and the results of this analysis showed that the POC was stable up to approximately 300 ℃. The POC was dissolved in dichloromethane and uniformly coated on the inner wall of a quartz capillary via the dynamic coating method to prepare a capillary electrochromatographic column. The experimental results revealed that the chiral electrochromatographic column could not only resolve ofloxacin, Troger's base, 2-amino-1-butanol, and 1-phenyl-1-amyl alcohol but also separate the isomers of o-, m-, and p-toluidine and o-, m-, and p-chloroaniline, indicating its good chiral separation ability. Investigation of the optimal separation conditions for ofloxacin, Troger's base, 2-amino-1-butanol, and 1-phenyl-1-amyl alcohol revealed that the voltage, buffer solution concentration, and pH significantly affected their separation degree. In particular, the optimal separation voltage for ofloxacin, Troger's base, and 2-amino-1-butanol was 15 kV, while that for 1-phenyl-1-amyl alcohol was 17 kV. The optimal buffer concentration and pH for ofloxacin, Troger's base, 2-amino-1-butanol, and 1-phenyl-1-amyl alcohol were 0.100 mol/L and 7.5. Under optimal chromatographic conditions, the resolution values for ofloxacin, Troger's base, 2-amino-1-butanol, and 1-phenyl-1-pentanol were 1.80, 3.33, 1.69, and 1.18, respectively. The results collectively demonstrate that the prepared POC may serve as a good chiral stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography with a certain chiral resolution ability and has good application prospects in chromatographic separation.

Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) has received increased attention from the academic community because it combines the excellent selectivity of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the high efficiency of capillary electrophoresis (CE). Selecting the most appropriate stationary phase material is crucial to achieve better separation effects in CEC. In recent years, a considerable number of materials, such as graphene oxide, proteins, metal organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been widely used as stationary phases in CEC to further improve its separation performance and extend its scope of potential applications. Among these materials, COFs have shown great application prospects in CEC owing to their unique properties, which include high porosity, large surface area, excellent stability, tunable pore size, and high designability of the framework structure. This review systematically summarizes published papers on the development and application of COFs in CEC from 2016 to 2023. First, two COF-based capillary columns (i. e., open-tube CEC columns and monolithic CEC columns) and their preparation methods are introduced. Second, the applications of CEC based on COF stationary phases in the separation of environmental endocrine disruptors, pesticides, aromatic compounds, amino acids, and drugs, particularly chiral drugs, are systematically summarized. The separation mechanism of CEC based on COF stationary phases is also introduced. At present, the good separation ability of COF-based CEC is mainly attributed to two factors: 1) The size exclusion effect of the pores of the COF stationary phase. Because of differences in the sizes of their organic molecular building units and side chains, COFs have varying pore sizes and topological structures. Thus, target analytes smaller than the pores of the COFs can enter the frameworks and interact with them during separation. On the other hand, target analytes larger than the pores of the COFs cannot enter the frameworks and interact with them during separation; thus, they can be separated. 2) The interactions between the target analytes and side chains (e. g., hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, etc.) of the COFs. Since COFs usually contain alkyl side chains, aromatic structures, and oxygen and/or nitrogen atoms with high electronegativity, various interactions could occur between the COFs and target analytes. Finally, directions for the future development and strategic application of CEC based on COF stationary phases are proposed. We believe that future research in CEC based on COF stationary phases should focus on the following aspects: 1) The use of cheminformatics to design and construct COFs to improve the efficiency of COF capillary column preparation; 2) the development of milder methods to synthesize COFs that can meet the requirements of high performance COF capillary columns; and 3) in-depth research to explore the separation mechanism of CEC based on COF stationary phases to provide theoretical guidance for developing CEC methods suitable for the separation and analysis of complex samples.

Global optimization problems have been a research topic of great interest in various engineering applications among which neural network algorithm (NNA) is one of the most widely used methods. However, it is inevitable for neural network algorithms to plunge into poor local optima and convergence when tackling complex optimization problems. To overcome these problems, an improved neural network algorithm with quasi-oppositional-based and chaotic sine-cosine learning strategies is proposed, that speeds up convergence and avoids trapping in a local optimum. Firstly, quasi-oppositional-based learning facilitated the exploration and exploitation of the search space by the improved algorithm. Meanwhile, a new logistic chaotic sine-cosine learning strategy by integrating the logistic chaotic mapping and sine-cosine strategy enhances the ability that jumps out of the local optimum. Moreover, a dynamic tuning factor of piecewise linear chaotic mapping is utilized for the adjustment of the exploration space to improve the convergence performance. Finally, the validity and applicability of the proposed improved algorithm are evaluated by the challenging CEC 2017 function and three engineering optimization problems. The experimental comparative results of average, standard deviation, and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests reveal that the presented algorithm has excellent global optimality and convergence speed for most functions and engineering problems.

Studies investigating microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in surface water sources in Kenya are reviewed. Contaminants of emerging concern are chemicals that have recently been discovered that may pose a threat to the environment, aquatic life, and human life. Microplastics in surface waters range from 1.56 to as high as 4520 particles/m3 , with high concentrations recorded in coastal waters. The dominant microplastics are fibers, fragments, and films, with foams, granules, and pellets making up only a small percentage. The main source of pharmaceuticals in water sources is not wastewater-treatment plants but rather raw untreated sewage because high concentrations are found near informal settlements with poor sewage connectivity. Antibiotics are detected in the range of the limit of quantification to 320 µg/L, with sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and ciprofloxacin being the most abundant antibiotics. The high frequency of detection is attributed to the general misuse of antibiotics in the country. A health risk assessment indicated that only ciprofloxacin and acetaminophen posed noncarcinogenic health risks in the Ndarugo River and Mombasa periurban creeks, respectively. Similarly, the detection of antiretroviral drugs, mainly lamivudine, nevirapine, and zidovudine, is associated with human immunodeficiency virus prevalence in Kenya. In the Lake Naivasha, Nairobi River, and Lake Victoria basins, frequently detected organochloride pesticides (OCPs) are methoxychlor, alachlor, endrin, dieldrin, endosulfan, endosulfan sulfate, α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH), γ-HCH, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), some of which occur above permissible concentrations. The presence of DDT in some sites translates to illegal use or historical application. The majority of individual OCPs posed no noncarcinogenic health risk, except dieldrin and aldrin which had a hazard quotient >1 in two sites. Therefore, more surveying and regular monitoring in different regions in Kenya concerning CECs is essential to determine the spatial variability and effective measures to be taken to reduce pollution. Differential evolution (DE) belongs to the most usable optimization algorithms, presented in many improved and modern versions in recent years. Generally, the low convergence rate is the main drawback of the DE algorithm. In this article, the gray wolf optimizer (GWO) is used to accelerate the convergence rate and the final optimal results of the DE algorithm. The new resulting algorithm is called Hunting Differential Evolution (HDE). The proposed HDE algorithm deploys the convergence speed of the GWO algorithm as well as the appropriate searching capability of the DE algorithm. Furthermore, by adjusting the crossover rate and mutation probability parameters, this algorithm can be adjusted to pay closer attention to the strengths of each of these two algorithms. The HDE/current-to-rand/1 performed the best on CEC-2019 functions compared to the other eight variants of HDE. HDE/current-to-best/1 is also chosen as having superior performance to other proposed HDE compared to seven improved algorithms on CEC-2014 functions, outperforming them in 15 test functions. Furthermore, jHDE performs well by improving in 17 functions, compared with jDE on these functions. The simulations indicate that the proposed HDE algorithm can provide reliable outcomes in finding the optimal solutions with a rapid convergence rate and avoiding the local minimum compared to the original DE algorithm.

Background: Individuals with child maltreatment (CM) experiences show alterations in emotion recognition (ER). However, previous research has mainly focused on populations with specific mental disorders, which makes it unclear whether alterations in the recognition of facial expressions are related to CM, to the presence of mental disorders or to the combination of CM and mental disorders, and on ER of emotional, rather than neutral facial expressions. Moreover, commonly, recognition of static stimulus material was researched.Objective: We assessed recognition of dynamic (closer to real life) negative, positive and neutral facial expressions in individuals characterised by CM, rather than a specific mental disorder. Moreover, we assessed whether they show a negativity bias for neutral facial expressions and whether the presence of one or more mental disorders affects recognition.Methods: Ninety-eight adults with CM experiences (CM+) and 60 non-maltreated (CM-) adult controls watched 200 non-manipulated coloured video sequences, showing 20 neutral and 180 emotional facial expressions, and indicated whether they interpreted each expression as neutral or as one of eight emotions.Results: The CM+ showed significantly lower scores in the recognition of positive, negative and neutral facial expressions than the CM- group (p < .050). Furthermore, the CM+ group showed a negativity bias for neutral facial expressions (p < .001). When accounting for mental disorders, significant effects stayed consistent, except for the recognition of positive facial expressions: individuals from the CM+ group with but not without mental disorder scored lower than controls without mental disorder.Conclusions: CM might have long-lasting influences on the ER abilities of those affected. Future research should explore possible effects of ER alterations on everyday life, including implications of the negativity bias for neutral facial expressions on emotional wellbeing and relationship satisfaction, providing a basis for interventions that improve social functioning.
