RESUMO

In this study, a beverage made from a combination of Agave sap (AS) and prickly pear juice (PPJ) was analyzed for its nutrients and bioactive and potentially health-promoting compounds. The beverage was evaluated for its ability to act as an antioxidant, regulate glycemic properties, and undergo gut bacterial fermentation in vitro. The major mono- and oligosaccharides present in the beverage were galacturonic acid (217.74 ± 13.46 mg/100 mL), rhamnose (227.00 ± 1.58 mg/100 mL), and fructose (158.16 ± 8.86 mg/mL). The main phenolic compounds identified were protocatechuic acid (440.31 ± 3.06 mg/100 mL) and catechin (359.72 ± 7.56 mg/100 mL). It was observed that the beverage had a low glycemic index (<40) and could inhibit digestive carbohydrases. The combination of ingredients also helped to reduce gas production during AS fermentation from 56.77 cm3 to 15.67 cm3. The major SCFAs produced during fermentation were butyrate, acetate, and propionate, with valerate being produced only during the late fermentation of the AS. This beverage is rich in bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and dietary fiber, which will bring health benefits when consumed.

The areoles and spines of cacti can be used to desorb ions of ionic liquids (ILs) by the mere action of an electric field into the atmospheric pressure (AP) interface of a mass spectrometer. The small cactus species Opuntia microdasys bears numerous very fine hairs on its areoles and tiny sharp spines that appeared suited to serve as needle electrodes sharp enough for field desorption of ions to occur. In fact, positive and negative ions of four ILs could be desorbed by a process analogous to AP field desorption (APFD). In contrast to APFD where activated field emitters are employed, the ILs were deposited onto one or two adjacent areoles by applying 1-3 µL of a dilute solution in methanol. After evaporation of the solvent, the cactus was positioned next to the spray shield electrode of a trapped ion mobility-quadrupole-time-of-flight instrument. Desorption of IL cations and IL anions, respectively, did occur as soon as the electrode was set to potentials in the order of ±4.5 kV, while the cactus at ground potential was manually positioned in front of the entrance electrode to bring the areole covered with a film of the sample into the right position. Neither did mixing of ILs occur between neighboring areoles nor did the cactus suffer any damage upon its use as a botanical field emitter.

Nowadays, substituting petroleum-based plastics with biodegradable polymers made from polysaccharides loaded with various reinforcing materials has recently gained attention due to the impact of conventional plastics wastes. In this study, polysaccharidic mucilage from Ethiopian cactus (Opuntia Ficus Indica) was derived using microwave-assisted extraction technique to develop biodegradable polymers that were inexpensive, readily available, simple to make, and ecofriendly. The effect of microwave power 300-800 W, solid-liquid (cactus-sodium hydroxide solution) ratio 1:5-1:25, sodium hydroxide concentration 0.1-0.8 mol/L, and extraction time 2-10 min on mucilage extraction were studied and the maximum yield of mucilage was attained at optimized parameters of 506 W, 1:20, 0.606 mol/L, and 9.5 min, respectively. Biodegradable polymers made with mucilage alone have poor mechanical characteristics and are thermally unstable. Thus, to overcome the stated problems, glycerol as a plasticizer and acid-leached kaolin crosslinked with urea as a reinforcing material were used. Moreover, the effect of acid-leached kaolin and glycerol on the physico-chemical properties of the films was studied, and a maximum tensile strength of 6.74 MPa with 18.45 % elongation at break, thermally improved biodegradability of 26 %, were attained at 10 % acid-leached kaolin and 20 % glycerol crosslinking with 2 % urea. But the maximum degradability of 53.5 % was attained at 30 % glycerol content. The control and reinforced biodegradable films were characterized using TGA, FTIR, SEM, and XRD to determine the thermal, functional group, morphology, and crystallinity of the bioplastics, respectively. These biodegradable plastics may be used for packaging application.

A comprehensive analysis of phytochemicals, digestive stability, and bioaccessibility was conducted on a golden barrel cactus extract from 3- and 6-year-old plants. Both ages contained lutein and four chlorophyll derivatives (chlorophyll a, b, pheophytin a, and b), but younger cacti revealed a significantly higher abundance. Total phenolics reached 3545.35 mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g dry weight in the 3-year-old extracts compared to 2557.96 mg/100 g in the older ones. Antioxidant activity, assessed by DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, was consistently higher in the younger group. While digestion impacted all compounds, lutein exhibited relative stability at 69.03% and 58.33% retention for 3- and 6-year-old extracts, respectively. Chlorophylls displayed lower stability (37.64% and 33.34% remaining for younger and older cacti) despite showing higher bioaccessibility (73.385% and 64.65%). Phenolics also demonstrated promising bioaccessibility (76.39% and 69.88%) despite moderate digestive degradation (60.52% and 56.89% retained). Conclusively, all investigated attributes-phytochemical content, digestive stability, and bioaccessibility-favored the younger golden barrel cactus extracts. This highlights the crucial role of plant age in maximizing the potential health benefits of these extracts.

Opuntia ficus-indica has always interacted with many phytophagous insects; two of them are Dactylopius coccus and D. opuntiae. Fine cochineal (D. coccus) is produced to extract carminic acid, and D. opuntiae, or wild cochineal, is an invasive pest of O. ficus-indica in more than 20 countries around the world. Despite the economic and environmental relevance of this cactus, D. opuntiae, and D. coccus, there are few studies that have explored volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from the plant-insect interaction. The aim of this work was to determine the VOCs produced by D. coccus and D. opuntiae and to identify different VOCs in cladodes infested by each Dactylopius species. The VOCs (essential oils) were obtained by hydrodistillation and identified by GC-MS. A total of 66 VOCs from both Dactylopius species were identified, and 125 from the Esmeralda and Rojo Pelón cultivars infested by D. coccus and D. opuntiae, respectively, were determined. Differential VOC production due to infestation by each Dactylopius species was also found. Some changes in methyl salicylate, terpenes such as linalool, or the alcohol p-vinylguaiacol were related to Dactylopius feeding on the cladodes of their respective cultivars. Changes in these VOCs and their probable role in plant defense mechanisms should receive more attention because this knowledge could improve D. coccus rearing or its inclusion in breeding programs for D. opuntiae control in regions where it is a key pest of O. ficus-indica.

This study isolated and identified autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from mandacaru fruit and evaluated their potential probiotic and technological aptitudes in vitro, as well as the protective effects of freeze-dried mandacaru fruit on the most promising LAB isolate during lyophilization and refrigeration storage. Initially, 212 colonies were isolated from mandacaru fruit, and 34 were preliminarily identified as LAB. Thirteen isolates identified by 16S-rRNA sequencing as Pediococcus pentosaceus were negative for DNase, gelatinase, hemolytic, and biogenic amine production. The selected isolates showed proteolytic activity, diacetyl and exopolysaccharide production, and good tolerance to different NaCl concentrations while having low cellular hydrophobicity and antagonistic activity against pathogens. The survival of isolates sharply decreased after 3 h of exposure to pH 2 and had a good tolerance to 1 % bile salt. A principal component analysis selected P. pentosaceus 57 as the most promising isolate based on the examined technological and probiotic-related physiological properties. This isolate was lyophilized with mandacaru fruit and stored under refrigeration for 90 days. P. pentosaceus 57 lyophilized with mandacaru fruit had high viable cell counts (9.69 ± 0.03 log CFU/mL) and >50 % of physiologically active cells at 90 days of refrigeration storage. The results indicate that mandacaru fruit is a source of P. pentosaceus with aptitudes to be explored as potential probiotic and technological characteristics of interest for the food industry, besides being a good candidate for use in lyophilization processes and refrigeration storage of LAB due to its cryoprotective effects.

Cactus pear fruit is known with many health benefits in ethnomedicine of countries like Mexico, Portugal, Chine, India etc. The study was aimed to develop biofunctional lactic fermented cactus pear fruit beverage to add values to the medicinal fruit. The processing parameters such as quantity of freeze dried cactus pear fruit powder, sucrose and incubation time were optimised using response surface methodology. The optimized product was then subjected to proximate compositional, physicochemical, biofunctional and microbial analysis. The lactic fermented cactus pear fruit beverage was prepared by mixing 12% [w/v] freeze dried cactus pear fruit powder and 3% sucrose in water, then pasteurised and inoculated with 3% Lactobacillus fermentum MTCC 25515 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus M9, then incubated at 37 °C for 6 h. The moisture content of the beverage was 87.77% and major constituent was carbohydrate (9.58% per wet matter basis). The 100 mL beverage contains 89.84 mg GAE phenolic compounds, 5.86 mg QE flavonoids, 71.82 mg betacyanin, 28.08 mg betaxanthin, 10.59 mg ascorbic acid. The beverage also exhibited 58% ABTS antioxidant activity. The beverage was shelf stable for 20 days at 7 ± 1 °C. Such a biofunctional beverage loaded with antioxidant potential can be consumed as refreshing drink.

The aim of this research is to study the ability of Cactus leaves to act as a biocoagulants for the removal of lead in water. Different solvents, such as distilled water, NaCl, NaOH, and HCl, were used as chemical activators to extract the active components from the Cactus. The Cactus was utilized as an organic coagulant in five different forms: (i) Cactus juice (CJ); Cactus extract using (ii) distilled water (C-H2O); (iii) NaCl at 0.5 M concentration (C-NaCl); (iv) NaOH at 0.05 M concentration (C-NaOH); and (v) HCl at 0.05 M concentration (C-HCl). In order to establish the optimal conditions for the coagulation, this study employed the jar test as an experimental technique and the Box-Behnken design (BBD) as an experimental approach. According to BBD, there are three factors (k = 3), namely pH, biocoagulant dosage, and settling time. The R2 and R2 adjusted for all coagulants were close to 100%, confirming the validity of all the mathematical models. The results were significant; the highest lead removal efficiencies were 98.11%, 98.34%, 95.65, 96.19%, and 97.49%, utilizing CJ, C-H2O, C-NaCl, C-HCl, and C-NaOH as natural coagulants. The Cactus has been characterized using FTIR, XRD, and SEM to identify the active components that remove lead.

Cacti are a distinguished group of plants that stand out for their great nutritional values, diverse uses, and unique morphology, allowing them to grow and thrive under different conditions such as dry, xeric, and even low-temperature environments. The world is going through significant climate changes that are affecting the agriculture system. Therefore, sustainable and multifunctional crops, as many species of the Cactaceae family are, might be a good alternative in the near future. In this work, the uses of cacti in human food were analyzed through a scientific prospection from the point of view of their temporal and spatial distribution and potential uses. Brazil is the country with more publications related to the scope of this work, followed by Mexico. The presence of cacti in these countries can influence their interest in these species, which might reflect the results encountered in this study. The uses and ethnobotanical applications of cacti vary in different countries worldwide. Cactus is consumed fresh (in salads), in preparations (jams and sweets), and juices, being also present in traditional dishes in countries like Mexico. This study emphasizes cacti's importance in people's diets and ongoing world changes. Their ability to thrive even in hot environments with low water resources will lead to a greater focus on these species in the upcoming years. Furthermore, these plants have great flavor and contain several beneficial chemical compounds with desirable nutritional and health properties. Therefore, knowledge dissemination combined with technological innovations will allow greater use of these multifunctional species for human consumption. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), the cactus moth, is native to South America with a widespread distribution in Argentina. The larvae consume the interior of Opuntia spp. (Cactaceae) plants. The moth was used as a biocontrol agent against invasive non-native Opuntia spp. in many countries around the world. The cactus moth arrived unintentionally in Florida, USA, expanded its range and threatened Opuntia-based agriculture and natural ecosystems in southern North America. The insect is also a pest of cultivated O. ficus-indica L. in Argentina. An endemic South American parasitoid, Goniozus legneri Gordth (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), is used in inundative biological control programmes against lepidopteran pests. The goal of this work was to evaluate G. legneri as a biocontrol agent to be used in inundative releases against C. cactorum. Mortality of C. cactorum by G. legneri was assessed at different spatial scales, as well as the interactions with Apanteles opuntiarum Martínez & Berta (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a common Argentine natural enemy of C. cactorum. The ability of G. legneri to paralyse, parasitise and kill C. cactorum was confirmed. The paralysis inflicted on C. cactorum larvae reduced larval damage to the plants by 85%. Using two parasitoid species increased the mortality of C. cactorum larvae, but it was highly dependent on the order of their arrival. The combined mortality caused by both parasitoids was higher than a single one, in particular when G. legneri arrived first (56 ± 1%), suggesting asymmetric competition due to the preference of G. legneri attacking previously parasitised larvae. Goniozus legneri has potential as an inundative biocontrol agent of C. cactorum, but its interaction with the classical biocontrol agent A. opuntiarum needs to be considered.

AIM: This study aims to determine nursing students' emotions toward the challenging situations they encounter in clinical practice and their metaphorical perceptions of the concept of a nurse. BACKGROUND: Challenging situations in clinical practice negatively affect nursing students' perceptions of the nursing profession and their professional learning and development. DESIGN: The study is based on quantitative, metaphorical and picture-drawing analysis. METHODS: The quantitative and qualitative parts of it were conducted with 200 nursing students attending their first and second years in the 2021-2022 academic year. The Draw a Picture of a Cactus Test was carried out with 30 students in clinical practice. The data were collected using the "Sociodemographic Information Form" and the "Semi-structured Interview Form". Content analysis techniques, descriptive statistics, picture analysis and psychological tests were used to evaluate the data. The study was reported based on Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR). RESULTS: Nursing students involved in the study produced 37 metaphors related to the "concept of a nurse" and three most expressed ones were "mother, lifeguard and helper." The metaphors produced by nursing students were categorized under six roles: "caregiver, educator, supporter, researcher, administrator and therapeutic/rehabilitator". The pictures drawn by the students about the challenging situations in clinical practice and the expressions they used were associated with self-centeredness (n=21), being attentive (n=19), aggression toward peers (n=13), low motivation (n=11) and need for protection (n=11). Nursing students experienced feelings of loneliness, passivity and anxiety when navigating difficult conditions in clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS: Metaphors and picture drawing allow a unique approach to the concept of nursing and nursing students' emotional states toward challenging situations in their clinical practice.

A thin plastic-like film separated from the epidermis of Cereus hildmannianus has excellent tensile strength, resistance to water and high antimicrobial activity and supports the growth of mouse fibroblast cells. Cactuses are one of the most under explored plant species with high potential for food, materials, pharmaceutical and other applications. Although studies have shown the ability of cactuses to be used for food, as a source for fibers, as reinforcement for composites and other applications, the role of individual layers and their properties has been studied to a limited extent. In this paper, a thin translucent layer was separated from the epidermis of C. hildmannianus and studied for its composition, structure and properties. The layer is composed of about 73% cellulose and 2% lignin and morphologically, shows surface with uneven and serrated edges. Films with length of up to 36 cm, strength of 6.8 MPa and elongation of 2.5% could be peeled from the cactus suggesting their suitability for food packaging and other applications. X-ray diffraction patterns and FTIR spectrums indicated that the films are similar to that of cellulose and major thermal degradation occurred above 280°C. Compared to standards, the cactus films showed about 41% and 44% inhibition against gram positive and gram negative bacteria and 67% inhibition of the common fungal strain (A. niger). Films showed high stability in water and to common chemicals. When used as substrates for mouse fibroblast cell growth, no cytotoxicity was observed and the cactus peel supported the attachment and proliferation of cells demonstrating potential to be used as a biomaterial for tissue engineering applications.

This study aimed to create long-lasting carriers by producing electrospun nanofibers loaded with dill seed (Anethum graveolens L.) essential oil (DSEO), using cactus mucilage (CM) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Continuous and uniform electrospun nanofibers with a diameter of 158 ± 18 to 230 ± 26 nm were successfully made from the CM/PVA blend solution and the CM/PVA/DSEO emulsion. Atomic force microscopy topographic images revealed that the electrospun nanofibers had a tubular morphology. The thermogravimetric curves of DSEO, CM, pure PVA, and electrospun nanofibers demonstrate that the polymers used and the essential oil have effective chemical interactions. The water contact angle results suggest that the manufactured nanofibers are hydrophilic. CM/PVA consistently achieves a remarkable encapsulation efficiency of 100% DSEO. The electrospun nanofibers enabled the controlled release of free and encapsulated DSEO, resulting in sustained long-term release. The agar disk diffusion technique was used to study the antimicrobial activity of electrospun nanofibers and nanofibers containing DSEO against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. With a minimum inhibitory concentration of 2.5 mg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration of 5 mg/mL, electrospun nanofibers containing DSEO demonstrated bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against foodborne pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The DSEO-loaded electrospun nanofibers derived from carbohydrates show promise as an active interior coating for use in biomedical and food packaging applications.

The Gymnocalycium genus includes numerous highly valued species in the ornamental plant market and their propagation is usually carried out using traditional methods. However, there is a lack of information regarding the efficiency of micropropagation through in vitro tissue culture techniques on these species. So, with the objective of establishing an efficient micropropagation protocol that allows for optimizing the plant obtaining processes, the morphogenic potential of Gymnocalycium cv. Fancy has been studied in this work. For this purpose, plants of two different sizes (medium and large) were used as the starting material, from which three types of explants were obtained (apex, central discs and bases). The effect of three plant growth regulators (6-Benzylaminopurine, BAP; Kinetin, KIN; and Thidiazuron, TDZ) at three different concentrations each were studied, and the number of generated shoots, the frequency of appearance of callogenesis and rhizogenesis by explant and condition were assessed. An efficient protocol based on the use of KIN at 4 µM and central discs as a starting explant was developed. Moreover, the obtained sprouts rooted successfully (especially using BAP at 2 µM), and their subsequent acclimatization was very effective. Furthermore, emergence of a new morphotype is presented, that has not previously been described.

Pectin and alginate are well-established biopolymers used in natural film development. Single-polymer mucilage films were developed from freeze-dried native mucilage powder of two cultivars, 'Algerian' and 'Morado', and the films' mechanical properties were compared to single-polymer pectin and alginate films developed from commercially available pectin and alginate powders. The casting method prepared films forming solutions at 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% (w/w) for each polymer. Considerable variations were observed in the films' strength and elasticity between the various films at different polymer concentrations. Although mucilage films could be produced at 5% (w/w), both cultivars could not produce films with a tensile strength (TS) greater than 1 MPa. Mucilage films, however, displayed > 20% elongation at break (%E) values, being noticeably more elastic than the pectin and alginate films. The mechanical properties of the various films were further modified by varying the pH of the film-forming solution. The various films showed increased TS and puncture force (PF) values, although these increases were more noticeable for pectin and alginate than mucilage films. Although single-polymer mucilage films exhibit the potential to be used in developing natural packaging, pectin and alginate films possess more suitable mechanical attributes.

Seed germination in Melocactus and other cactus species is hampered by dormancy. However, most studies failed to achieve high seed-germination rates, suggesting a complex mechanism of dormancy in Cactaceae. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate whether factors such as light and phytoregulators overcome the dormancy in the seeds of the friar's crown cactus (Melocactus zehntneri). Two consecutive experimental sets were designed: one with seed germination under filter paper conditions and different wavelengths and Photosynthetically Photon Flux Densities (PPFDs); and one in vitro experiment using a culture medium to evaluate the influence of different phytoregulators, such as gibberellic acid (GA3), benzylaminopurine (BAP) and ethephon (ET), both in the germination of seeds of M. zehntneri. Seeds of M. zehntneri are positive photoblastic. Red light and gradual increases in PPFD resulted in the highest germination rates (60.8-61.7%) and germination speed index (4.4-4.5). In vitro seeding in culture media increased the germination percentage to 76% in control without phytoregulators. Ethephon showed a major effect in releasing the germination of dormant seeds of M. zehntneri, totaling 98% of seeds germinated under in vitro conditions, while GA3 and BAP showed minor or no effect on germination. The present study resulted in an efficient in vitro technique for germination and a better understanding of cacti seed dormancy.

Utilizing water resources rationally has become critical due to the expected increase in water scarcity. Cacti are capable of surviving with minimal water requirements and in poor soils. Despite being highly drought-resistant, cacti still faces limitations in realizing its full potential under drought-stress conditions. To this end, we investigated the interactive effect of humic substances (Hs) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on cactus plants under drought stress. In the study, a cactus pot experiment had three irrigation levels (W1: no irrigation, W2: 15% of field capacity, and W3: 30% of field capacity) and two biostimulants (Hs soil amendment and AMF inoculation), applied alone or combined. The findings show that the W1 and W2 regimes affected cactus performance. However, Hs and/or AMF significantly improved growth. Our results revealed that drought increased the generation of reactive oxygen species. However, Hs and/or AMF application improved nutrient uptake and increased anthocyanin content and free amino acids. Furthermore, the soil's organic matter, phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium contents were improved by the application of these biostimulants. Altogether, using Hs alone or in combination with AMF can be an effective and sustainable approach to enhance the tolerance of cactus plants to drought conditions, while also improving the soil quality.

Pectin and alginate satisfy multiple functional requirements in the food industry, especially relating to natural packaging formulation. The continuous need for economic and environmental benefits has promoted sourcing and investigating alternative biomaterials, such as cactus pear mucilage from the cladodes of Opuntia spp., as natural packaging alternatives. The structural and mechanical properties of mucilage, pectin and alginate films developed at a 5% (w/w) concentration were modified by treating the films with calcium (Ca) in the calcium chloride (CaCl2) form. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the 5% (w/w) 'Algerian' and 'Morado' films to display considerable microstructure variation compared to the 5% (w/w) pectin and alginate films, with calcium treatment of the films influencing homogeneity and film orientation. Treating the alginate films with a 10% (w/w) stock CaCl2 solution significantly increased (p < 0.05) the alginate films' tensile strength (TS) and puncture force (PF) values. Consequently, the alginate films reported significantly higher (p < 0.05) film strength (TS and PF) than the pectin + Ca and mucilage + Ca films. The mucilage film's elasticity was negatively influenced by CaCl2, while the pectin and alginate films' elasticity was positively influenced by calcium treatment. These results suggest that the overall decreased calcium sensitivity and poor mechanical strength displayed by 'the Algerian' and 'Morado' films would not make them viable replacements for the commercial pectin and alginate films unless alternative applications were found.

Although nopal cladodes are a valuable bioactive compound source, they have historically been underused. This review draws a parallel between quantitative and qualitative data from the most outstanding scientific research concerning nopal cladodes in the last five years by implementing a bibliometric analysis. Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Morocco accounted for approximately 55% of the 111 articles selected for this review. Nopal cladodes are a great source of nourishing ingredients such as mucilage, pectin, insoluble fibers, minerals, ascorbic acid, and bioactive compounds such as carotenoids (e.g., ß-carotene, lutein, and cryptoxanthin), flavonoids (e.g., isorhamnetin, quercetin, rutin, and catechin), phytosterols (e.g., ß-sitosterol and ß-campesterol). Additionally, they offer technological benefits as a food ingredient, allied to good sensory acceptability. The findings suggest that medium-aged cladodes (20 days) have the highest concentration of soluble fiber, protein, and bioactive compounds, rendering them the optimal maturity stage for consumption and processing. Therefore, nopal cladodes can be exploited for several industries, including biotechnology, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, and they have attracted attention as a promising ingredient for the food industry in the concept of the next generation of innovative and functional vegetable foods.

This study used scanning electron microscopy via 3D dissection coupled with synchrotron radiation with microfocal beams of both small-angle X-ray scattering and wide-angle X-ray diffraction to analyze the periodic crystal aggregates of unusual poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) dendritic cactus-arm-like ring bands upon crystallization with a diluent poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) that is capable of hydrogen bonding interactions with PPDO. Three-dimensional microscopy interior dissection clearly expounds that the banded periodic architectures are packed by alternately normal-oriented flat-on crystals underneath the valley, periodically interfaced/branched with horizontal-oriented edge-on fibrils underneath the ridge. The oblique angles between the valley's flat-on crystals with the branches are ca. 25-45° (depending on gradient inclines and bending), which is also proved by the azimuthal angle in microbeam X-ray diffraction. The grating-like strut-rib assembly in the PPDO cactus-arm-like ring bands is further proved by novel iridescence tests.
