RESUMO

In this work, a design concept of bioinspired functional surfaces is proposed for lubricant control at surfaces and interfaces subjected to external thermal gradients. Inspired by the conical structures of cactus and the motion configuration of Centipedes, a bioinspired surface of wedged-groove with an oriented capillary pattern is constructed. The effect of geometrical parameters on the directional lubricant manipulation capacity and sliding anisotropy is discussed. It is found that by regulating the orientation of the capillary pattern, a controllable lubricant self-transport capacity can be achieved for varying conditions from surfaces to interfaces, with or without thermal gradients. The lubricant self-transport process is captured, and the mechanism is revealed. The design philosophy of the proposed bioinspired functional surface is believed to have potential applications for lubricant control in modern machinery and complex liquid control in lab-on-a-chip and microfluidics devices.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis vulgaris was shown to be an independent factor increasing the risk of several comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes and dyslipidaemia with an increased risk of stroke and myocardial infarction. We hypothesise that early endothelial dysfunction, which plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, may be detected by digital video nailfold capillaroscopy (DVNC) at the level of the dermal capillary microvasculature as a surrogate parameter. Nailfolds represent the only body site allowing for a non-invasive assessment of the capillary microvasculature at a horizontal plane. DVNC is a well-established diagnostic tool for in vivo assessment of the peripheral microcirculation by evaluating the morphology of dermal papillary capillaries. To date, reports on morphological changes of the non-lesional nailfold capillaries in patients with psoriasis vulgaris are scarce and the existing data are not conclusive. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a prospective, single-centre, non-randomised, controlled, exploratory study assessing the capillary patterns in 100 subjects affected by psoriasis vulgaris. Non-lesional nailfold capillaries will be imaged by means of DVNC (Optilia Digital Capillaroscopy System, Optilia Instruments AB, Sollentuna, Sweden) in 50 patients affected by psoriasis vulgaris and 50 healthy controls. Assessments will include a qualitative, descriptive analysis of the nailfold capillaries' morphology, as well as a quantitative investigation (frequency, extent) of changes in capillary patterns. Moreover, patients' characteristics associated with the manifestation of nailfold capillaries' pathologies including well-known cardiovascular risk markers will be studied. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval was provided by the ethic committee of the medical faculty of the University of Heidelberg (Ethics approval number S-447/2017). The design and the final results of the study will be published and made available to the public. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: DRKS00012856.

Serrated lesions, including hyperplastic polyps (HPs), traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs) and sessile serrated adenomas/polyps (SSA/Ps), are important contributors to colorectal carcinogenesis. The aim of the present study was to analyze the potential of conventional endoscopy and advanced endoscopic imaging techniques to delineate the characteristic features of serrated lesions with cancer. The present study was a retrospective analysis of the data of 168 patients who had undergone colonoscopy, and a total of 228 serrated lesions (77 HPs, 58 TSAs, 84 SSA/Ps, 9 SSA/P plus TSAs) have been identified in these patients. A cancer component was identified in 2.6% of HPs, 13.8% of TSAs and 10.7% of SSA/Ps, but none of SSA/P plus TSAs. Compared with the lesions without cancer, the lesions with cancer exhibited a larger size (HP, TSA and SSA/P), a reddish appearance (SSA/P), a two-tier raised appearance (HP and SSA/P), a central depression (HP, TSA and SSA/P), the type V pit pattern (HP, TSA and SSA/P), and/or the type III capillary pattern (TSA and SSA/P). Deep invasion was identified in 50.0% of HPs, 12.5% of TSAs and 55.6% of SSA/Ps with cancer. The Ki-67 proliferative zone was distributed diffusely within the area of the cancer, but partially within the non-cancer area of HPs, TSAs and SSA/Ps. The lesion types were also analyzed on the basis of mucin phenotype. The present study suggested that a detailed endoscopic analysis of serrated lesions with cancer is useful for delineating characteristic features, and the analysis aids treatment selection.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that there are four zones of distinct venous patterns around the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ); i.e. truncal, perforating, palisade (PZ) and gastric zones. Using the distal end of PZ as a marker for GEJ, this study was done to assess the length and patterns of PZ in Koreans, and to assess the prevalence of endoscopic Barrett's esophagus (E-BE) and hiatal hernia (E-HH). METHODS: 847 consecutive patients undergoing diagnostic endoscopy were included. During endoscopy, PZ, squamocolumnar junction (SCJ) and pinchcock action (PCA) were identified. Patterns were classified according to the relationships of the distal end of PZ with SCJ and PCA; A: all three at the same level, B: SCJ proximal to the other two which are at the same level, C: PCA distal to the other two which are at the same level, D: SCJ proximal to the distal end of PZ which is proximal to PCA. Cases with patterns B and D were thought to have E-BE, and those with patterns C and D to have E-HH. RESULTS: Patterns A, B, C and D were 79.2%, 12.1%, 3.8% and 4.9%, respectively. Length of PZ was 3.0+/-0.1 cm. E-BE and E-HH were found in 17.0% and 8.7%, respectively. Both E-BE and E-HH were more frequently found in males and in cases with reflux esophagitis. CONCLUSION: E-BE and E-HH are not so infrequent in Koreans as previously thought, if we use the distal end of PZ as an endoscopic marker of GEJ.
