RESUMO

Career choice is a highly complex process. The growth in the number, nature, and overlap between occupations creates a more multifaceted career landscape, especially for young people. This study expands the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) by developing a model that includes additional factors influencing career choices, such as self-efficacy, career exploration, and social support. A convenient sampling method was applied, with 340 Vietnamese students responding to the questionnaire on Google Forms between August and October 2022. The results supported the research hypotheses, with environmental exploration emerging as the most decisive factor influencing career choice. The most exciting finding of this article is the negative impact of social support on the relationship between environmental exploration and career choice. Finally, the results underscore the significance of implementing career guidance and providing career experiences for university students at educational institutions.

BACKGROUND: The career intentions of students play a crucial role in shaping the growth of the hospitality and tourism industry. Previous research underlines the significance of future work self in predicting outcomes related to one's career. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the precise ways, timing, and conditions under which the future work self of undergraduate students can enhance their employability. METHODS: This paper aims to address the existing research gap by employing career construction theory and self-determination theory to propose a moderated mediation model-i.e., career exploration serves as a mediator and job market knowledge functions as a moderator in the relationship between future work self and employability. We conducted two independent studies (i.e., an experimental study and a time-lagged field study) to test the proposed model. Specifically, in Study 1 we employed an experimental research design to recruit 61 students majoring in tourism management to participate. They were randomly assigned to two scenarios (future work self: high vs. low), and we manipulated different levels of future work self by means of scenario descriptions. In Study 2, we used the time-lagged research design to collect data via submitting questionnaires among 253 Chinese undergraduates who majored in hospitality and tourism at a university in the middle area of China. RESULTS: The results indicate a positive correlation between undergraduates' future work self and their employability. Furthermore, this relationship is mediated by a mediator of career exploration. It is important to note that this mediating relationship is also contingent upon the moderator variable of undergraduates' job market knowledge when considering the impact of career exploration on employability. CONCLUSION: The findings contribute to enriching the current understanding of the positive effects of future work self on undergraduates' desirable outcomes in employability.

Previous research on career exploration has mainly focused on cognitive-personal variables. Although the social cognitive career theory model posits that personality could influence career exploration through both personal agency and contextual factors, very few studies have examined the two possible paths simultaneously. We hypothesized that individuals who perceive higher social support experience more career exploration behavior, and this relationship is mediated by higher self-efficacy and life satisfaction. The participants of this study were 853 Chinese college students. The results showed that self-efficacy and life satisfaction independently and jointly mediated the relationship between perceived social support and career exploration. The multiple mediation model showed that the high perceived social support would increase students' sense of self-efficacy, which could improve their sense of life satisfaction, and further help them engage in more career exploration activities.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To measure change in radiology knowledge, confidence in radiology skills, and perceptions pertaining to radiology following a one-week boot camp elective for undergraduate medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A five-day comprehensive radiology boot camp was developed including sessions on image interpretation, procedural skills, and appropriate image ordering. A multiple-choice quiz was administered before and after the elective, utilizing radiology questions from the validated AMSER STARS database. Additionally, a pre- and post-elective survey was administered assessing radiology career interest, confidence in radiology-based skills, and the potential ability of radiology-based skills to increase confidence in specialties other than radiology. Responses from the assessments were analysed using paired t-tests. RESULTS: 15 students enrolled in the course and 14 completed all assessments. The average score on the quiz increased from 50.1% to 66.0% (p<0.001). On the post-elective survey, the average student confidence score increased by more than one point on a six-point Likert scale in each of radiographic interpretation (p=0.004), ultrasound interpretation (p=0.0002), CT/MRI interpretation (p=0.02), general radiology knowledge including procedural skills (p=0.0001), and appropriate image ordering (p=0.004). Average student satisfaction with the elective was 8.1 out of 10. CONCLUSION: A one-week radiology boot camp for pre-clerkship medical students improved radiology knowledge and confidence in radiology skills, showing potential for this format to meet the demand for increased radiology content in undergraduate training. Students indicated that confidence in radiology knowledge would increase confidence on non-radiology clerkship rotations, highlighting the importance of how a one-week radiology bootcamp can impact both future radiology and non-radiology clerkship experiences.

OBJECTIVE: Relative to the Black American population size, there is an underrepresentation of Black psychiatrists in the USA. In order to address this issue, it is important to explore factors that contribute to Black medical students' decision to pursue a career in psychiatry. METHODS: First-year psychiatry residents who identify as Black (N = 7) were interviewed. Career Construction Theory provided a structured framework for the interview process. For qualitative analysis of data, codes were assigned to reflect concepts and develop themes. RESULTS: All participants mentioned the impact of being a Black psychiatrist in the Black community, the influence of strong female role models on their life, and the importance of the fit between their personality and the work done within psychiatry. The majority of interviewees identified macro-level and cultural events that had influenced them and discussed a desire for advocacy and the influence of Black role models, perseverance, and the importance of work-life balance. CONCLUSION: This qualitative study identified many influential factors that were deemed important to Black interns in their decision to pursue a residency in psychiatry. With the information learned from these interviews, educators within psychiatry can bolster their support of Black medical students, encourage pursuit of a career in psychiatry, and ultimately, work toward reducing disparities in psychiatric care. Future research should examine additional collective notions of career decision-making.

Perceived parental expectations of adolescents have been linked to many high school consequences, yet few studies have examined the relationship between perceived parental expectations and adolescents' career aspirations, and potential mechanisms that underlie these associations. To address this research gap, this study investigated the reciprocal relationship between perceived parental expectations and career aspirations, as well as the mediating role of adolescents' career exploration among Chinese adolescents. Using a longitudinal design, a total of 2540 senior high school students (51.38% girls, Mage = 17.09 ± 0.69) participated in the study. The results showed that perceived parental expectations of adolescents have no direct impact on their subsequent career aspirations. A longitudinal mediating role of career exploration was found between perceived parental expectations and career aspirations. No gender differences were found in any of the pathways. These findings provided support for helping adolescents better set their career aspirations by acknowledging the critical role of parental expectations and the mediating role of career exploration.

According to career literature, greater parental support seems to be associated with higher levels of career exploration. This relationship may be mediated by self-regulatory processes, such as social-emotional skills, as curiosity. However, despite the large number of empirical studies that analyze the antecedents of career exploration, there are no references, to our knowledge, to the role of socio-emotional skills. Following this gap, the present study aims to examine the extent to which perceived parental support is associated with career exploration through the mediating effect of curiosity (socio-emotional skill), among a group of 8th and 9th grade students from public schools in southern Portugal (N = 540). An integrated model was conducted using AMOS 20.0 and the results revealed that curiosity is a partial mediator of the relationship between perceived parental support and career exploration. These results highlight the importance of considering socio-emotional skills (such as curiosity) when designing interventions to foster adaptive career behaviors. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed to open the opportunity to progressively extend the participation of proximal contexts (e.g., families) to career and socio-emotional skills development processes.

Socio-emotional skills can play a crucial role in students career development. This study used a person-centered approach to explore socio-emotional skills (curiosity, optimism, empathy, sociability, and responsibility) profiles among 8° grade students (N = 310). We also explored the relations of these profiles with career exploration (self and environmental), perceived parental support (emotional support, instrumental assistance, career-related modeling, and verbal encouragement) and school achievement. Using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), four distinct profiles emerged that differed in terms of level and shape, namely: Other and Task oriented profile, Socio-emotional Adaptive profile, Socio-emotional non-Adaptive profile, Self- Oriented profile. Our results show that the "Socio-emotional Adaptive" profile can be clearly differentiated from the "Socio-emotional non-Adaptive" profile given the higher values it presents regarding all the variables in study. However, the differences between the "Other and Task Oriented" profile and "Self-Oriented" profile (intermediate profiles) were analyzed and discussed from qualitative point-of-view and adopting an exploratory approach. Overall, the findings of this study indicate that socio-emotional profiles have the potential to account for variations in career behaviors and academic performance. These results provide valuable insights for the development and implementation of career-oriented interventions targeted at 8th grade students and their immediate relational environments.

Introduction: In the post-pandemic era, the cultivation of vocational adaptability among college students holds equal significance to fostering subjective well-being in the face of an increasingly daunting professional landscape. This intricate process can be influenced by exploratory expeditions into potential career paths, sincere introspection, and a profound sense of vocation. Methods: Drawing upon Bandura's self-regulation theory, this research project employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to scrutinize the interconnectedness between career exploration, self-reflection, vocational calling, vocational adaptability, and subjective well-being within a sample of 1077 Chinese undergraduates. Results: The findings demonstrated that career exploration and self-reflection positively predicted career adaptability and subjective well-being. In addition, career calling had a significant mediating effect in this model. Conclusion: The findings of this study shed light on the significance of career exploration and self-reflection in fostering both adolescent career adaptability and subjective well-being. And are expected to provide a reference for the career construction and development of college students and career education in colleges and universities.

Purpose: Shadowing is an important part of medical student education. The COVID-19 pandemic limited medical students' hospital access. At the same time, virtual access to learning experiences has expanded greatly. In response, we implemented a novel virtual shadowing system to provide students with convenient and safe exposure to the Emergency Department (ED). Patients and Methods: Six EM faculty hosted 2-hour virtual shadowing for up to 10 students per experience. Students registered via signupgenius.com. Virtual shadowing was conducted using a HIPAA-compliant ZOOM account on an ED issued mobile telehealth Monitor/iPad. The physician would bring the iPad into the room, obtain consent from patients, and ensure students were able to see the encounter. Between visits, students were encouraged to ask questions using the chat function and microphone. A short de-briefing followed each shift. Each participant received a survey about the experience. The survey consisted of 4 questions for demographics, 9 Likert style questions to assess efficacy, and 2 free response sections for comments and feedback. All survey responses were anonymous. Results: In total, 58 students participated in 18 virtual shadowing sessions with an average of 3-4 students per session. Survey responses were collected between October 20, 2020 and November 20, 2020. The overall response rate was 96.6% (56/58 surveys completed). Of respondents, 46 (82.1%) rated the experience as "effective" or "very effective" at providing exposure to Emergency Medicine. Fifty-three (94.6%) said they would participate in virtual shadowing in the ED again, and 48 (85.7%) would do virtual shadowing in another specialty were it available. Conclusion: We found virtual shadowing to be an easy to implement and effective way for students to shadow physicians in the ED. Even in post-pandemic times, virtual shadowing should be explored as an accessible and effective way to expose students to a broad array of specialties.

Individuals' early experiences can shape their lifelong development. Notably, healthy parenting experiences will build a good foundation for successful development, whereas inappropriate parenting experiences hinder healthy development. From the goal disengagement perspective, we propose that over-parenting can elicit individual goal disengagement in the development process, which hinders goal-pursuit behaviors. Data collected from 536 university students from China at three time points supported our hypotheses. Specifically, over-parenting promotes more career-exploration goal disengagement, inhibiting career-exploration behavior. In addition, the process mentioned above is more salient for individuals with a high need for parental approval. The theoretical and practical implications of this research are also discussed.

Older job seekers dropping out of the active workforce is a major challenge for individuals, organizations, and society, resulting in the need to protect and extend their working lives. Based on the discouraged workers approach, this study used career construction theory to study how past experiences can discourage older job seekers and make them withdraw from the job search. Specifically, we explored how age discrimination is connected to lower levels of older job seekers' occupational future time perspective (i.e., remaining time and future opportunities) and how it results in less career exploration and higher retirement intentions. Using a three-wave design, we followed 483 older job seekers in two countries (the United Kingdom and the United States) over a total period of two months. Results of structural equation modeling showed that perceived age discrimination decreased older job seekers' remaining time and future opportunities. Further, remaining time was negatively linked to retirement intentions, whereas future opportunities were positively linked to career exploration. Furthermore, results revealed two indirect effects of age discrimination on (1) retirement intentions via remaining time and (2) career exploration via future opportunities. These results show how damaging age discrimination can be in the job search context and we call for the search of potential moderators that can buffer the negative impact of age discrimination. Practitioners should work on protecting older job seekers' occupational future time perspective to keep them active instead of losing them to early retirement.

In developed countries, education and career experimentation typically extends into people's twenties (Arnett, 2000, 2015; Mehta et al., 2020). Thus, people are not committing to a career path in which they can build expertise, take on increasing responsibilities, and climb an organizational ladder (Day et al., 2012) until they reach established adulthood, the period of development from 30 to 45. As the conceptualization of established adulthood is relatively new, little is known about career development during this period. As such, in the present study, we aimed to provide a better understanding of career development in established adulthood by interviewing participants (n = 100) aged 30-45 from across the United States about their career development. Some participants described Career Exploration in established adulthood, sharing how they were still searching for a good career fit, and how a sense of diminishing time related to how they explore career paths. Participants also described Career Stability in established adulthood, including feeling committed to a career path, noting that there were some drawbacks to this stability, but also benefits in terms of feeling confident in their roles. Finally, participants described Career Growth, and shared their experiences of climbing the career ladder as well as planning for the future and possible "second acts". Taken together, our results suggest that established adulthood, at least in the USA, brings some stability in terms of career paths and development but that it may also be a period of career reflection for some.

We examined the role of the NIH-funded Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) program at Wayne State University in increasing faculty (1) support for doctoral students exploring non-academic research opportunities, (2) respect for non-academic research, and (3) ability to help students with non-academic research career exploration. Ninety-seven faculty participated in one or more BEST activities over a five-year period. Fifty-three of those faculty (55%) completed an online survey about their participation in the program and their support, respect, and ability to help students explore non-academic research careers. Sixteen of these faculty were also interviewed in depth about their perspectives on the role professional development can play in enhancing faculty perspectives about non-academic research career options for their students. The survey and interview data reveal some changing perceptions of BEST faculty participants in their attitudes toward and respect for non-academic research careers, as well as in their ability to help students in career exploration. These faculty perceptions correlated with their level of participation in BEST activities. Importantly, this study also showed that some faculty believe they lack the experience and connections outside of academia to adequately support doctoral students' career exploration. The results of this NIH-funded BEST program on faculty attitudes underscore the influence of federally funded programs in changing institutional attitudes towards supporting student career choices that have broad societal impact.

Determining if an employment opportunity will be a good match can feel daunting, especially for veterinary graduates entering the workforce. To ease this transition, veterinary educators traditionally have attempted to provide career support through interspersed didactic lectures on career options and the preparation of employment documents. While well intended, this approach fails to address the multiple dimensions of effective career planning or the reality that career planning is a lifelong endeavor. For a career planning teaching modality to be effective, it must address all stages of career planning and provide a framework that can be adapted throughout a career. Here we describe how a four-stage career-planning model, utilized throughout higher education, was employed to create a career planning assignment for guiding students in assessing organizational fit. We describe how student feedback was used to inform revisions, resulting in an improved educational experience as measured by students' perceptions of the utility of the assignment. Additional recommendations based on instructor reflection are provided to guide creation and implementation of future assignments. Given the growing support for professional skills training in veterinary medical education, we view incorporation of such learning activities as essential to preparing students to enter the modern veterinary workplace.

Faced with tremendous employment pressure, how to enhance effective career exploration and career adaptability is crucial for college students' career. This study uses self-assessed data from 840 undergraduate students at three time points to reveal the formation mechanism of career adaptability from a dual perspective of teacher support and students' effective part-time behavior. In particular, the mediating role of career exploration is introduced based on self-regulation theory, and the moderating role of teacher support and students' effective part-time work is introduced based on social cognitive career theory. The results show that (1) Future work self-salience positively influences career adaptability; (2) future work self-salience indirectly influences career adaptability through career exploration; (3) both teacher support and students' effective part-time behavior positively moderate the indirect relationship between future work self-salience and career adaptability through career exploration. This study attempts to provide practical guidance for college graduates to engage in career exploration and career construction.

Career planning and career decision are important tasks for college students. The process may be affected by career stress, career exploration, and future work self, with some students facing career indecision. Combining both construction career and proactive motivation model, this study investigated the relationships between career stress, career exploration, future work self, career planning and career indecision among 1,012 Chinese college students using the Structure equation model (SEM) to test the proposed mediation model. Results show that career stress negatively predicts career planning, while career exploration positively predicts career planning. The mediating role of future work self has on career stress and career exploration's effects on both career planning and career indecision was verified. Moreover, the study also found future work self's positive effects on both career planning and career indecision in Chinese college students. Finally, the study's theoretical and practical significance and implications are discussed.

Explore the influence mechanism of discrimination perception on higher vocational Students' career exploration, it provides empirical evidence for promoting vocational college Students' career exploration and career development. Using the questionnaire survey method, 893 higher vocational students from four higher vocational colleges in Jiangsu Province were investigated by using the Discrimination Perception Scale, the Core Self-Evaluation Scale (CSES), the Chinese version of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ) and the Career Exploration Scale (CES). The data were analyzed using SPSS26.0 and Amos23.0, and the results showed that discrimination perception was significantly negatively correlated with core self-evaluation, psychological flexibility and career exploration (r = -0.487, -0.497, -0.326, p < 0.01), core self-evaluation was significantly positively correlated with psychological flexibility and career exploration (r = 0.518, 0.352, p < 0.01), and psychological flexibility was significantly positively correlated with career exploration (r = 0.386, p < 0.01); Core self-evaluation and psychological flexibility mediated the effect between discrimination perception and career exploration with effect sizes of -0.054 and -0.061, respectively; Core self-evaluation and psychological flexibility mediated the chain effect between discrimination perception and career exploration of higher vocational students with effect sizes of -0.030. Therefore, discrimination perception not only directly influences career exploration of higher vocational students, but also indirectly influences career exploration of higher vocational students through the separate mediating effects of core self-evaluation and psychological flexibility and the chain mediating effects of core self-evaluation and psychological flexibility. Accordingly, the following suggestions are put forward, which should pay attention to the cultivation of core self-evaluation and psychological flexibility of higher vocational students, strengthen the teaching quality and improve the image of vocational colleges.

We aimed to develop a horticultural therapy program to prepare adolescents at the Dae san juvenile detention center (D-JDC) for their return to society. The effects of the program on emotional stability and career exploration were investigated. Adolescents who wished to participate in the horticultural therapy program were recruited from the D-JDC. Data were collected using various questionnaires before and after the program was implemented. Thirty-five (mean age, 15.74 ± 1.65 years; 11 males, 24 females) students were enrolled. The program mainly consisted of plant cultivation activities, such as seeding, transplanting plants, cutting, harvesting, and post-harvest utilization. To evaluate emotional health, the ego-resiliency scale was used. To evaluate social behavior, the inventory of parent and peer attachment, peer attachment scale, and social skills scale were used. Career exploration was assessed using the career preparation behavior scale and the career decision-making self-efficacy-short form. Peer attachment, social skills, and career preparation behavior showed significant improvements after the program, with the students responding positively in the post-program surveys. Our horticultural therapy program helped improve the career exploration and social skills of D-JDC students and positively affected their emotional stability. Based on our findings, horticultural therapy can be used as a correctional program for adolescents in D-JDC to help them return to society.

The study of college students' job search and influencing factors has been an important topic in college students' career development. The degree of satisfaction with the results of a college student's perceived job search directly affects the sustainability of his or her future career. Although the importance of core self-evaluation in the job search process has been confirmed by a large body of literature, very little literature has focused on the mechanism of action between core self-evaluation and job search outcomes. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the impact of core self-evaluation on job search outcomes through a chain mediation model and to discuss the role of career exploration and career adaptability in this relationship. Two waves of survey data were utilized to test the research hypotheses on a sample of 310 college students facing employment in different regions of China. The results indicated that core self-evaluation positively impacted job search outcomes. In addition, career exploration and career adaptability moderated the relationship between core self-evaluation and job search outcomes, respectively. More importantly, core self-evaluation could also influence job search outcomes through the chain-mediating effects of career exploration and career adaptability.
