RESUMO

The genus Aeneolamia includes eight described species and 32 subspecies widely distributed in America. In Mexico, two species (A.contigua and A.albofasciata) and one subspecies (A.contiguacampecheana) are recognized. In a recent study of Cercopidae in Mexico, a new species of Aeneolamia was noted from Oaxaca, Mexico based on body color and the ornamentation patterns of tegmen, without a formal taxonomic description. To test the hypothesis of an extant new taxon within the genus a comprehensive analysis of intraspecific morphological variation from 46 morphological features was performed, four related to tegmen color patterns in both sexes, six to male genitalia, and 36 continuous characters measured in specimens of both sexes of Mexican Aeneolamia from several geographical localities using traditional univariate, multivariate morphometric, and geometric morphometric methods. This is the first time that this approach has been used in Cercopidae. Aeneolamiadanpecki Castro, Armendáriz & Utrera, sp. nov. from Oaxaca showed pronounced morphological differences in tegmen coloration patterns, the shape of different elements of the male genitalia, and body measurements compared to the other Mexican members of Aeneolamia; therefore, it is described as a new species.

RESUMO

The Locris species and subspecies from Madagascar are revised and a new combination is proposed: Locris johannae var. nigrolimbata Lallemand, 1910 to L. nigrolimbata comb. nov. Illustrations and description of male terminalia are given for the first time for the three Locris species and an identification key is provided. A new species of the Malagasy endemic genus Bourgoinrana Soulier-Perkins, 2012 is described: B. beondrokaensis Le Cesne & Soulier-Perkins sp. nov. An updated identification key to the species of Bourgoinrana is provided.

Abstract Cercopidae is one of the largest families of the spittlebug superfamily Cercopoidea. Most spittlebugs species are characterized by bright color patterns. Thus, this study evaluated for the first time the Cercopidae species collected in rice crops, Novo Progresso, Pará state, Brazil. Insects were collected weekly between November/2010 and March/2011 from areas without (WA) and with agrochemical applications (AA). Four species were recorded: Deois incompleta (Walker, 1851) (71 specimens in WA area and 50 in AA area); Mahanarva spectabilis (Distant, 1909) (39 specimens in WA area and 39 in AA area); Mahanarava tristis (Fabricius, 1803) (26 specimens in WA area and 20 in AA area); Zulia pubescens (Fabricius, 1803) (11 specimens in WA area and four in AA area). The species collected displayed pronounced color polymorphism when compared with the color patterns of the same species from other regions. This makes correct identification more difficult for these species. Therefore, taxonomic and diagnostic informations provided in this study will help in the correct identification, control and monitoring of these insects in future studies. Besides that, we recommend monitoring in rice fields and further study of the biology and ecology of cercopids in Brazil to assess the potential of these species as rice pests.


Resumo Cercopidae é uma das maiores famílias de cigarrinhas dentro da superfamília Cercopoidea. A maioria das espécies de cigarrinhas é caracterizada pelos padrões de cores brilhantes. Deste modo, este estudo avaliou pela primeira vez, as espécies de Cercopidae coletados em cultura de arroz, Novo Progresso, Pará, Brasil. Os insetos foram coletados semanalmente entre novembro/2010 e março/2011 em áreas de arroz de terras altas sem (SA) e com aplicações de agroquímicos (CA). Quatro espécies foram registradas: Deois incompleta (Walker, 1851) (71 espécimes na área SA e 50 na área CA); Mahanarva spectabilis (Distant, 1909) (39 exemplares na área SA e 39 na área CA); Mahanarava tristis (Fabricius, 1803) (26 espécimes na área SA e 20 na área CA); Zulia pubescens (Fabricius, 1803) (11 espécimes na área SA e quatro na área CA). Portanto, as informações taxonômicas e de diagnóstico fornecidas neste estudo ajudarão na identificação, controle e monitoramento desses insetos em estudos futuros. Além disso, recomendamos o monitoramento em campos de arroz e estudos posteriores de biologia e ecologia de cercopídeos no Brasil para avaliar o potencial dessas espécies como pragas de arroz.

The circular mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Phymatostetha huangshanensis is 17,785 bp long. It contains the typical set of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs), and a large control region. The gene organization, nucleotide composition, and codon usage are similar to other Cercopoidea mitogenomes. However, the control region, including multiple types of tandem repeats, is longer than those of other spittlebugs. All PCGs initiate with standard start codon of ATN or TTG and share the complete stop codon of TAA or TAG, whereas cox2 and cox3 end with a single T. All tRNAs have the typical clover-leaf structure except for trnS1. In addition, the unpaired nucleotide is detected in the anticodon stem of trnS1 and the acceptor stem of trnR. The secondary structures of rrnL and rrnS comprise 44 helices and 27 helices, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis is performed on the 13 PCGs and two rRNAs of 24 Cicadomorpha mitogenomes. Both the maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods robustly support the relationships of (Membracoidea + (Cicadoidea + Cercopoidea)). Within Cercopoidea, the monophyly of Cercopidae is also supported. Furthermore, we firstly present the taxonomic status of Phymatostetha with the relationships of (Cosmoscarta + (Phymatostetha + Paphnutius)).

The spittlebug family Cercopidae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadomorpha: Cercopoidea) is distributed worldwide, with highest species diversity in the tropics. Several included species are economically important pests of major agricultural crops and cultivated pasture grasses. Taxonomically, Cercopidae is divided into two subfamilies: the paraphyletic Old World Cercopinae and the monophyletic New World Ischnorhininae. Results are here presented from an investigation of phylogenetic relationships within Ischnorhininae based on DNA sequences from seven loci (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, Histone 2A, Histone 3, Wingless, Cytochrome Oxidase I, and Cytochrome Oxidase II) generated from exemplars of 119 spittlebug species. The resulting topology is used to test alternative higher-level classification hypotheses of Ischnorhininae and, with fossil-calibration, dates were estimated for major events in the evolutionary history of Cercopidae, including a much earlier divergence date (around 68-50 Mya) than previously reported in the literature. In addition, for the first time in Cercopidae, ancestral states of some predation avoidances strategies were reconstructed, with results suggesting an origin of aposematic coloration in the Cercopidae ancestor, with subsequent independent losses of aposematic coloration in multiple lineages.

To characterize froghopper mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) features, in this study, the mitochondrial genome of Cosmoscarata bispecularis (Hemiptera, Cicadomorpha, Cercopoidea, Cercopidae) was sequenced and annotated. The complete genome is 15,426 bp in length. It contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and a control region (A + T-rich region). All the PCGs initiate with the standard start codons ATN and all the tRNAs can be folded into typical cloverleaf secondary structures except tRNASer(GCT), which only formed a simple loop. The control region is consisted of 861 bp bases located between the srRNA gene and the tRNAlle-tRNAGln-tRNAMet(IQM) gene cluster. The measure of complete mitogenome sequence of C. bispecularis will provide fundamental data for the phylogenetic and biogeographic studies of the Cercopoidea and Hemiptera.

RESUMO

A comprehensive review of cytogenetic features is provided for the large hemipteran suborder Auchenorrhyncha, which currently contains approximately 42,000 valid species. This review is based on the analysis of 819 species, 483 genera, and 31 families representing all presently recognized Auchenorrhyncha superfamilies, e.i. Cicadoidea (cicadas), Cercopoidea (spittle bugs), Membracoidea (leafhoppers and treehoppers), Myerslopioidea (ground-dwelling leafhoppers), and Fulgoroidea (planthoppers). History and present status of chromosome studies are described, as well as the structure of chromosomes, chromosome counts, trends and mechanisms of evolution of karyotypes and sex determining systems, their variation at different taxonomic levels and most characteristic (modal) states, occurrence of parthenogenesis, polyploidy, B-chromosomes and chromosome rearrangements, and methods used for cytogenetic analysis of Auchenorrhyncha.
