Introduction The World Health Organization (WHO) Safe Surgery Checklist significantly decreases morbidity and mortality in regular operating room cases. However, significant differences in workflow and processes exist between regular operating room cases and cesarean sections performed on the labor and delivery unit. The aim of this study is to adapt the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist for the labor and delivery unit and cesarean sections to improve communication and patient safety. Methods A multidisciplinary team consisting of all major stakeholders reviewed and revised the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist making it more applicable to cesarean section operations. The new Safe Cesarean Section Checklist was tested and then integrated into the electronic medical record and utilized on the labor and delivery unit. A specific cesarean section safety attitudes questionnaire was developed, validated, and administered prior to and one year after implementation. Results Usage of the Safe Cesarean Section Checklist was greater than 95% after initial implementation. Significant improvements were reported by the staff on the cesarean section attitudes questionnaire for several key areas including the feeling that all necessary information was available at the beginning of the procedure, decreases in communication breakdowns and delays, and fewer issues related to not knowing who was in charge during the procedure. Discussion Implementation of the Safe Cesarean Section Checklist was successfully adopted by the staff, and improvements in staff perceptions of several key safety issues on our unit were demonstrated. Additional studies should be undertaken to determine if clinical outcomes from this intervention are comparable to those seen with the use of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous studies have examined epilepsy surgery outcomes, yet the variability in the level of detail reported hampers our ability to apply these findings broadly across patient groups. Established reporting standards in other clinical research fields enhance the quality and generalizability of results, ensuring that the insights gained from studying these surgeries can benefit future patients effectively. This study aims to assess current reporting standards for epilepsy surgery research and identify potential gaps and areas for enhancement. METHODS: The Enhancing the Quality and Transparency of Health Research (EQUATOR) repository was accessed from inception to April 27, 2023, yielding 561 available reporting standards. Reporting standards were manually reviewed in duplicate independently for applicability to epilepsy and/or neurosurgery research. The reporting standards had to cover the following aspects in human studies: (1) reporting standards for epilepsy/epilepsy surgery and (2) reporting standards for neurosurgery. Disagreements were resolved by a third author. The top five neurosurgery, neurology, and medicine journals were also identified through Google Scholar's citation index and examined to determine the relevant reporting standards they recommended and whether those were registered with EQUATOR. RESULTS: Of the 561 EQUATOR reporting standards, 181 were pertinent to epilepsy surgery. One was related to epilepsy, six were specific to surgical research, and nine were related to neurological/neurosurgical research. The remaining 165 reporting standards were applicable to research across various disciplines and included but were not limited to CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trails), STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology), and PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). None of these required reporting factors associated with epilepsy surgery outcomes, such as duration of epilepsy or magnetic resonance imaging findings. SIGNIFICANCE: Reporting standards specific to epilepsy surgery are lacking, reflecting a gap in standards that may affect the quality of publications. Improving this gap with a set of specific reporting standards would ensure that epilepsy surgery studies are more transparent and rigorous in their design.

Ambulatory management of congestive heart failure (HF) continues to be a challenging clinical problem. Recent studies have focused on the role of HF clinics, nurse practitioners and disease management programmes to reduce HF readmissions. This pilot study is a pragmatic factorial study comparing a coach intervention, a SMARTPHONE REMINDER system intervention and BOTH interventions combined to Treatment as USUAL (TAU). We determined that both modalities were acceptable to patients prior to randomisation. Fifty-four patients were randomised to the four groups. The COACH group had no readmissions for HF 6 months after enrolment compared with 18% for the SMARTPHONE REMINDER Group, 8% for the BOTH intervention group and 13% for TAU. Medium-to-high medication adherence was maintained in all four groups although sodium consumption was lower at 3 months for the COACH and combined (BOTH) groups. This pilot study suggests a beneficial effect on rehospitalisation with the use of support measures including coaches and telephone reminders that needs confirmation in a larger trial.

Background Musculoskeletal disorders are a significant global health issue, necessitating advanced management strategies such as intra-articular and extra-articular injections to alleviate pain, inflammation, and mobility challenges. As the adoption of these interventions by physicians grows, the importance of robust safety protocols becomes paramount. This study evaluates the effectiveness of conversational artificial intelligence (AI), particularly versions 3.5 and 4 of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), in creating patient safety checklists for managing musculoskeletal injections to enhance the preparation of safety documentation. Methodology A quantitative analysis was conducted to evaluate AI-generated safety checklists against a preformed checklist adapted from reputable medical sources. Adherence of the generated checklists to the preformed checklist was calculated and classified. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to assess the performance differences between ChatGPT versions 3.5 and 4. Results ChatGPT-4 showed superior adherence to the preformed checklist compared to ChatGPT-3.5, with both versions classified as very good in safety protocol creation. Although no significant differences were present in the sign-in and sign-out parts of the checklists of both versions, ChatGPT-4 had significantly higher scores in the procedure planning part (p = 0.007), and its overall performance was also higher (p < 0.001). Subsequently, the preformed checklist was revised to incorporate new contributions from ChatGPT. Conclusions ChatGPT, especially version 4, proved effective in generating patient safety checklists for musculoskeletal injections, highlighting the potential of AI to streamline clinical practices. Further enhancements are necessary to fully meet the medical standards.

OBJECTIVES: To develop two ethical checklists to evaluate (i) management of ethical concerns in research projects and (ii) awareness of ethical conduct of healthcare laboratory professionals. METHODS: Comprehensive discussion among the members of IFCC Task Force on Ethics based on pertinent literature. RESULTS: This Checklist for Clinical Research Projects should be useful to evaluate research proposals from an ethical perspective before submitting it to an IRB or its equivalent, thereby diminishing rejection rates and resulting in more time-effective projects. The checklist designed to evaluate the ethical conduct in laboratory medicine could be useful for self evaluation (internal audits) and for certification/accreditation processes performed by third parties. CONCLUSIONS: These checklists are simple but powerful tools useful to guide professionals to adhere to ethical principles in their practice, especially in developing countries where accredited ethics committees may be difficult to find.

We discuss the use of two empirically validated behavior-change methods-checklists and goal setting-and designed a checklist to assist behavior analysts in improving their behavioral services to be more culturally responsive and trauma informed. We also present pilot data evaluating the use of the checklist and goal setting on the inclusion of culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices in behavior support plans designed for students in a public school. The training package was effective for both participants, and the participants' weekly goals corresponded to the observed changes in their behavior plans. Moreover, both participants strongly agreed that the checklist was valuable and easy to use and reported increases in their perceived abilities to implement culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices posttraining.

Checklists are a type of cognitive aid used to guide task performance; they have been adopted as an important safety intervention throughout many high-risk industries. They have become an ubiquitous tool in many medical settings due to being easily accessible and perceived as easy to design and implement. However, there is a lack of understanding for when to use checklists and how to design them, leading to substandard use and suboptimal effectiveness of this intervention in medical settings. The design of a checklist must consider many factors including what types of errors it is intended to address, the experience and technical competencies of the targeted users, and the specific tools or equipment that will be used. Although several taxonomies have been proposed for classifying checklist types, there is, however, little guidance on selecting the most appropriate checklist type, nor how differences in user expertise can influence the design of the checklist. Therefore, we developed an algorithm to provide guidance on checklist use and design. The algorithm, intended to support conception and content/design decisions, was created based on the synthesis of the literature on checklists and our experience developing and observing the use of checklists in clinical environments. We then refined the algorithm iteratively based on subject matter experts' feedback provided at each iteration. The final algorithm included two parts: the first part provided guidance on the system safety issues for which a checklist is best suited, and the second part provided guidance on which type of checklist should be developed with considerations of the end users' expertise.

STUDY DESIGN: Scoping Review. OBJECTIVE: To review the literature and summarize information on checklists and algorithms for responding to intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) alerts and management of intraoperative spinal cord injuries (ISCIs). METHODS: MEDLINE® was searched from inception through January 26, 2022 as were sources of grey literature. We attempted to obtain guidelines and/or consensus statements from the following sources: American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), American Academy of Neurology (AAN), American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, NASS (North American Spine Society), and other spine surgery organizations. RESULTS: Of 16 studies reporting on management strategies for ISCIs, two were publications of consensus meetings which were conducted according to the Delphi method and eight were retrospective cohort studies. The remaining six studies were narrative reviews that proposed intraoperative checklists and management strategies for IONM alerts. Of note, 56% of included studies focused only on patients undergoing spinal deformity surgery. Intraoperative considerations and measures taken in the event of an ISCI are divided and reported in three categories of i) Anesthesiologic, ii) Neurophysiological/Technical, and iii) Surgical management strategies. CONCLUSION: There is a paucity of literature on comparative effectiveness and harms of management strategies in response to an IONM alert and possible ISCI. There is a pressing need to develop a standardized checklist and care pathway to avoid and minimize the risk of postoperative neurologic sequelae.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studies investigating the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of radiotherapy exhibit substantial variations in terms of quality. The goal of this study was to assess the amount of transparency and bias in scoring articles with a specific focus on AI based segmentation and treatment planning, using modified PROBAST and TRIPOD checklists, in order to provide recommendations for future guideline developers and reviewers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The TRIPOD and PROBAST checklist items were discussed and modified using a Delphi process. After consensus was reached, 2 groups of 3 co-authors scored 2 articles to evaluate usability and further optimize the adapted checklists. Finally, 10 articles were scored by all co-authors. Fleiss' kappa was calculated to assess the reliability of agreement between observers. RESULTS: Three of the 37 TRIPOD items and 5 of the 32 PROBAST items were deemed irrelevant. General terminology in the items (e.g., multivariable prediction model, predictors) was modified to align with AI-specific terms. After the first scoring round, further improvements of the items were formulated, e.g., by preventing the use of sub-questions or subjective words and adding clarifications on how to score an item. Using the final consensus list to score the 10 articles, only 2 out of the 61 items resulted in a statistically significant kappa of 0.4 or more demonstrating substantial agreement. For 41 items no statistically significant kappa was obtained indicating that the level of agreement among multiple observers is due to chance alone. CONCLUSION: Our study showed low reliability scores with the adapted TRIPOD and PROBAST checklists. Although such checklists have shown great value during development and reporting, this raises concerns about the applicability of such checklists to objectively score scientific articles for AI applications. When developing or revising guidelines, it is essential to consider their applicability to score articles without introducing bias.

RESUMO

The survival and health of preterm and critically ill infants have markedly improved over the past 50 years, supported by well-conducted neonatal research. However, newborn research is difficult to undertake for many reasons, and obtaining informed consent for research in this population presents several unique ethical and logistical challenges. In this article, we explore methods to facilitate the consent process, including the role of checklists to support meaningful informed consent for neonatal clinical trials. CONCLUSION: The authors provide practical guidance on the design and implementation of an effective consent checklist tailored for use in neonatal clinical research.

INTRODUCTION: Patient safety in anaesthesia has significantly improved over the past decades, largely due to pharmacological and technological advancements, as well as the widespread adoption of guidelines and standards recommended by international organisations. This study aimed to evaluate the practice of anaesthesia and its compliance with the international standards for safe anaesthesia practice recommended by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This study also describes the operating room within Ibn Sina University Hospital Centre (CHUIS) of Rabat, Morocco, the referral centre, with the aim of identifying its potential and shortcomings. METHODS: This was a prospective analytical descriptive study from March 1, 2021, to July 31, 2021. All facilities within an operating room and information regarding patients undergoing general anaesthesia, whether it be emergency or scheduled procedures, administered by an anaesthetist, were included. A survey form based on the WHO-WFSA International Standards for a Safe Practice of Anesthesia was used to collect data about the anaesthesia sites. Sources of information included direct observation of anaesthesia procedures, patient records, registers, and qualified anaesthesia personnel. Manual data analysis and encoding were performed using Microsoft Word and Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington, United States).  Results: All the facilities within the operating rooms of CHUIS were surveyed. In total, 250 patients were recorded, with 43.6% at Ibn Sina Hospital, 18.4% in the Children's Hospital, 14% at the National Institute of Oncology, 12% at the Specialties, 6% at Maternity Hospital Souissi, and 6% at Orangers Maternity Hospital. The median age of patients was 50 years old with 37% of them aged 36-55 years. Overall, 67.6% of these patients were admitted for scheduled interventions. Anaesthetic risk assessment showed that 67.2% of the patients were in American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class I. Pre-anaesthesia consultations were conducted in 65.6% of cases, and pre-anaesthesia visits were conducted in 89.6% of cases. Anaesthesia checklists were used in 89.6% of cases. General anaesthesia, including tracheal intubation 85.2% and facemask 7.2%, was the most common type of anaesthesia. Regarding anaesthetic agents, propofol was the most used intravenous narcotic, with fentanyl still being used in most cases 92% and rocuronium in 82% of cases. Electrocardiogram, non-invasive blood pressure, and pulse oxygen saturation (SPO2) monitoring were consistently used, while capnography was not available in 6% of cases. Crystalloid fluid resuscitation was used in 91.2% of cases, and colloid resuscitation was used in 1.2% of cases. The post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) was present in 58.8% of cases. Postoperative analgesia was administered in 80% of cases. Adverse events occurred in 58.4% of cases. Preoperative transfusion strategies were employed in 18% of cases. Patient transfers to the intensive care unit were done for 18%. CONCLUSION: Despite the shortcomings of the healthcare system in Morocco, our study indicates that the anaesthesia practice at CHUIS remains highly acceptable by adhering to the highest international standards.

Designing and developing safe systems has been a persistent challenge in health care, and in surgical settings in particular. In efforts to promote safety, safety culture, i.e., shared values regarding safety management, is considered a key driver of high-quality, safe healthcare delivery. However, changing organizational culture so that it emphasizes and promotes safety is often an elusive goal. The Safe Surgery Checklist is an innovative tool for improving safety culture and surgical care safety, but evidence about Safe Surgery Checklist effectiveness is mixed. We examined the relationship between changes in management practices and changes in perceived safety culture during implementation of safe surgery checklists. Using a pre-posttest design and survey methods, we evaluated Safe Surgery Checklist implementation in a national sample of 42 general acute care hospitals in a leading hospital network. We measured perceived management practices among managers (n = 99) using the World Management Survey. We measured perceived preoperative safety and safety culture among clinical operating room personnel (N = 2,380 (2016); N = 1,433 (2017)) using the Safe Surgical Practice Survey. We collected data in two consecutive years. Multivariable linear regression analysis demonstrated a significant relationship between changes in management practices and overall safety culture and perceived teamwork following Safe Surgery Checklist implementation.

AIM: Despite the documented benefits of the World Health Organisation Patient Safety Checklist compliance rates with implementation continue to cause risk to patient safety. This qualitative systematic review aimed to explore the reported factors that impact compliance and implementation processes related to surgical safety checklists in perioperative settings. DESIGN: A qualitative systematic review. METHODS: A systematic review using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach to synthesize qualitative studies was conducted and reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Electronic databases were expansively searched using keywords and subject headings. Articles were assessed using a pre-selected eligibility criterion. Data extraction and quality appraisal was undertaken for all included studies and a meta-aggregation performed. DATA SOURCES: The CINAHL, Medline and Scopus databases were searched in August 2022 and the search was repeated in June 2023. RESULTS: 34 studies were included. Following the synthesis of the findings there were multiple interrelating barriers to checklist compliance that impacted implementation. There were more barriers than enablers reported in existing studies. Enablers included effective leadership, education and training, timely use of audit and feedback, local champions, and the option for local modifications to the surgical checklist. Further research should focus on targeted interventions that improve observed compliance rates to optimize patient safety. CONCLUSION: This qualitative systematic review identified multiple key factors that influenced the uptake of the Surgical Safety Checklist in operating theatres. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Surgeon participation, hierarchical culture, complacency, and duplication of existing safety processes were identified which impacted the use and completion of the checklist.

INTRODUCTION: The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) is a communication tool that improves teamwork and patient outcomes. SSC effectiveness is dependent on implementation fidelity. Administrative audits fail to capture most aspects of SSC implementation fidelity (ie, team communication and engagement). Existing research tools assess behaviours during checklist performance, but were not designed for routine quality assurance and improvement. We aimed to create a simple tool to assess SSC implementation fidelity, and to test its reliability using video simulations, and usability in clinical practice. METHODS: The Checklist Performance Observation for Improvement (CheckPOINT) tool underwent two rounds of face validity testing with surgical safety experts, clinicians and quality improvement specialists. Four categories were developed: checklist adherence, communication effectiveness, attitude and engagement. We created a 90 min training programme, and four trained raters independently scored 37 video simulations using the tool. We calculated intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) to assess inter-rater reliability (ICC>0.75 indicating excellent reliability). We then trained two observers, who tested the tool in the operating room. We interviewed the observers to determine tool usability. RESULTS: The CheckPOINT tool had excellent inter-rater reliability across SSC phases. The ICC was 0.83 (95% CI 0.67 to 0.98) for the sign-in, 0.77 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.92) for the time-out and 0.79 (95% CI 0.59 to 0.99) for the sign-out. During field testing, observers reported CheckPOINT was easy to use. In 98 operating room observations, the total median (IQR) score was 25 (23-28), checklist adherence was 7 (6-7), communication effectiveness was 6 (6-7), attitude was 6 (6-7) and engagement was 6 (5-7). CONCLUSIONS: CheckPOINT is a simple and reliable tool to assess SSC implementation fidelity and identify areas of focus for improvement efforts. Although CheckPOINT would benefit from further testing, it offers a low-resource alternative to existing research tools and captures elements of adherence and team behaviours.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, the WHO introduced the surgical safety checklist (SSC) as one of the interventions for improving patient safety. The systematic use of structured checklists during surgery has been shown to reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality. However, SSC utilisation has been challenging in low-income and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. Jhpiego Ethiopia implemented a quality improvement project (QIP) aimed to increase SSC utilisation. METHODOLOGY: A model for improvement was used to design and implement a collaborative QIP to improve SSC utilisation at 23 public health facilities (13 primary health care facilities, 4 general hospitals and 6 tertiary hospitals) in Ethiopia from October 2020 to September 2021. SSC utilisation was defined as when a patient chart had SSC attached and each part of the checklist was completed. Training of surgical staff on safe surgery packages, monthly clinical mentorship and cluster-based learning platforms were implemented during the study period. We analysed bimonthly chart audit reports from each facility to assess the proportion of surgeries where the SSC was used. Shewhart charts were used to conduct a time-series analysis. Additionally, the Z-test for two sample proportions was used to determine if there is a statistically significant change from the baseline measure with a p<0.05. RESULT: In the postintervention period, the overall SSC utilisation improved by 39.9 absolute percentage points to 90.3% (p<0.0001) compared with the baseline value of 50.4% early in 2020. A time-series analysis using Shewhart charts showed a shift in the mean performance and signals of special cause variation. The largest improvement was observed in primary health care facilities in which the SSC utilisation improved from 50.8% to 97.9% (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that onsite clinical capacity building, mentorship and collaborative cluster-based learning platforms can improve SSC utilisation across all levels of facilities performing surgery.

BACKGROUND: The WHO introduced the Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) in 2008, which has been proven to enhance collaboration and patient safety before, during and after surgical procedures. However, the impact of using SSC has not been assessed in a rural setting in Malawi. We aimed to evaluate the uptake of SSC in Neno District, Malawi. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional hospital-based retrospective chart review of 468 surgical cases from July 2021 to March 2022 in two hospitals in Neno District. We collected data using Excel and used R software for analysis. We used descriptive statistics to characterise the surgeries. We used χ2 test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test to test the association between SSC use and independent variables. We fitted logistic regression to assess predictors of SSC use and complications. RESULTS: Of 468 surgical cases, 92% (n=431) were done as emergency procedures. The median age was 23 years (IQR: 19-29) and 94% (n=439) were female. Overall, 38% of surgeries (n=176) used the SSC and of these, 98% were in emergency procedures. We found an association between the use of SSC and the age of the client (p=0.018), type of procedure, name of the procedure, healthcare worker cadre, time procedure performed and complications (p<0.001). However, no association was observed between SSC use and outcome (p>0.05). The odds of using SSC were higher in emergency surgeries, surgeries performed at night; however, they were lower among temporary employees and anaesthetists with a diploma (p<0.001). The odds of experiencing complications were 1.71 times greater when using SSC compared with surgeries without SSC (p=0.029). CONCLUSIONS: The use of an SSC in a rural area was promising, despite its fluctuating use and this needs programme improvement. Further studies are highly recommended to understand the fluctuation in the use of the SSC.

BACKGROUND: Checklists are a powerful tool for reduction of mortality and morbidity. Checklists structure complex processes in a reproducible manner, optimize team interaction, and prevent errors related to human factors. Despite wide dissemination of the checklist, effects of checklist use in the prehospital emergency medicine are currently unclear. The aim of the study was to demonstrate that participants achieve higher adherence to guideline-recommended actions, manage the scenario more time-efficient, and thirdly demonstrate better adherence to the ABCDE-compliant workflow in a simulated ROSC situation. METHODS: CHIPS was a prospective randomized case-control study. Professional emergency medical service teams were asked to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on an adult high-fidelity patient simulator achieving ROSC. The intervention group used a checklist which transferred the ERC guideline statements of ROSC into the structure of the 'ABCDE' mnemonic. Guideline adherence (performance score, PS), utilization of process time (items/minute) and workflow were measured by analyzing continuous A/V recordings of the simulation. Pre- and post-questionnaires addressing demographics and relevance of the checklist were recorded. Effect sizes were determined by calculating Cohen's d. The level of significance was defined at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Twenty scenarios in the intervention group (INT) and twenty-one in the control group (CON) were evaluated. The average time of use of the checklist (CU) in the INT was 6.32 min (2.39-9.18 min; SD = 2.08 min). Mean PS of INT was significantly higher than CON, with a strong effect size (p = 0.001, d = 0.935). In the INT, significantly more items were completed per minute of scenario duration (INT, 1.48 items/min; CON, 1.15 items/min, difference: 0.33/min (25%), p = 0.001), showing a large effect size (d = 1.11). The workflow did not significantly differ between the groups (p = 0.079), although a medium effect size was shown (d = 0.563) with the tendency of the CON group deviating stronger from the ABCDE than the INT. CONCLUSION: Checklists can have positive effects on outcome in the prehospital setting by significantly facilitates adherence to guidelines. Checklist use may be time-effective in the prehospital setting. Checklists based on the 'ABCDE' mnemonic can be used according to the 'do verify' approach. Team Time Outs are recommended to start and finish checklists.

Commercial aviation practices including the role of the pilot monitoring, the sterile flight deck rule, and computerised checklists have direct applicability to anaesthesia care. The pilot monitoring performs specific tasks that complement the pilot flying who is directly controlling the aircraft flight path. The anaesthesia care team, with two providers, can be organised in a manner that is analogous to the two-pilot flight deck. However, solo providers, such as solo pilots, can emulate the pilot monitoring role by reading checklists aloud, and utilise non-anaesthesia providers to fulfil some of the functions of pilot monitoring. The sterile flight deck rule states that flight crew members should not engage in any non-essential or distracting activity during critical phases of flight. The application of the sterile flight deck rule in anaesthesia practice entails deliberately minimising distractions during critical phases of anaesthesia care. Checklists are commonly used in the operating room, especially the World Health Organization surgical safety checklist. However, the use of aviation-style computerised checklists offers additional benefits. Here we discuss how these commercial aviation practices may be applied in the operating room.

RESUMO

There are several pitfalls in the publication process that researchers can fall victim to, and these can occur knowingly or unknowingly. Although some of these errors may have occurred in good faith, disregard of publication governance is a dangerous practice and could bring authors and their co-authors into disrepute. We highlight some of these potential pitfalls, acquaint the reader with some rules that need to be adhered to in research and publishing, and help the reader learn how to avoid tripping-up on the road to publication.
