RESUMO

Microalgae cultures have emerged as a promising strategy in diverse areas, ranging from wastewater treatment to biofuel production, thus contributing to the search for carbon neutrality. These photosynthetic organisms can utilize the resources present in wastewater and fix atmospheric CO2 to produce biomass with high energy potential. In this study, the removal efficiency of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), CO2 fixation and lipid content in the biomass produced from microalgae grown in airlift photobioreactor were evaluated. Four mesoscale cultures were carried out: Control (Seawater + Conway medium), Treatment A (Oil Produced Water + Poultry Effluent Water), Treatment B (Poultry Effluent Water + Seawater) and Treatment C (Oil Produced Water, Seawater and nutrients). The impact of biostimulation, through the addition of nutrients, on PAHs removal efficiency (up to 90%), CO2 fixation rate (up to 0.20 g L-1 d-1) and the composition of the generated biomass was observed. Primarily, the addition of nitrates to the culture medium impacted CO2 fixation rate of the microalgae. In addition, a direct correlation was observed between PAHs removal and lipid accumulation in the biomass, up to 36% in dry weight, demonstrating microalgae's ability to take advantage of the organic carbon (PAHs) present in the culture medium to generate lipid-rich biomass. The concentration of polysaccharides in the biomass obtained did not exceed 12% on a dry weight basis, and the Higher Heating Value (HHV) ranged between 17 and 21 MJ kg-1. Finally, the potential of generating hydrogen through pyrolysis was highlighted, taking advantage of the characteristics of biomass as a conversion route to produce biofuels. These results show that microalgae are effective in wastewater treatment and have great potential in producing biofuels, thus contributing to the transition towards more sustainable energy sources and climate change mitigation.

RESUMO

Liquid waste from biological stains is considered non-domestic wastewater difficult to treat, generating high environmental impact. Therefore, the objective of this work was to carry out secondary and tertiary treatment of these effluents at a pilot scale, using a fungal/bacterial consortium followed by Chorella sp., for 15 days. In addition, to obtain an adsorbent material for Malachite Green dye removal, sludge generated in the plant and pine bark co-pyrolysis was performed. For microalgae isolation and selection of the Chlorophyceae class, Chlorococcales order, and Chorella sp. genus Winogradsky columns were employed. After 15 days of pilot plant treatment, removal percentages of 91 ± 2%, 90 ± 4% and 17 ± 2% were obtained for Colour Units, Chemical Oxygen Demand and Nitrates, respectively. Two types of class II biochar (BC500 and BC700) and one of class III (BC300) were produced. The highest value for Fixed carbon (FC) was obtained at 300 °C (27.3 ± 3%), decreasing as the temperature increased by 25.9 ± 5% and 24.8 ± 2%, for BC500 and BC700, respectively. Biochar yield was 62.1 ± 3%, 46.3 ± 4% and 31.6 ± 3% for BC300, BC500 and BC700, respectively. Finally, BC500 and BC700 biochar efficiently adsorbed Malachite Green obtaining qe values of 0.290 ± 0.032, 0.281 ± 0.015, 0.186 ± 0.009 and 0.191 ± 0.012 mg g-1 at pH values of 4.0 and 8.0 ± 0.2, respectively. Pseudo-second order model demonstrated a chemical adsorption took place, which was influenced by pH. RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the growth of Chlorella strains isolated from adverse environments at various concentrations of monoethanolamine (MEA), evaluating the CO2 fixation and macromolecule production. For this purpose, the green algae Chlorella sp. and Chlorella fusca LEB 111 were tested against five concentrations of MEA: 50, 75, 100, 200 and 300 mg L-1. The strain C. fusca LEB 111 exhibited higher tolerance to MEA as well as higher accumulation of dissolved inorganic carbon and efficiency of CO2 utilization (approximately 37.0% w w-1) with the addition of 100 and 150 mg L-1 of MEA. In addition, the highest carbohydrate productivity and the highest lipid productivity were obtained with 50 and 100 mg L-1 of MEA, respectively. Thus, the absorbent increased the carbon concentration in the medium, and its use in culture can be exploited by C. fusca LEB 111 to produce higher macromolecule concentrations.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) is a metal that can negatively interfere with the metabolic systems of living beings. The objective of this work was to evaluate the capacity for cadmium removal in aqueous solutions by immobilized Chlorella sp. in calcium alginate beads. Beads without Chlorella sp. were used as a control. All the treatments were established in triplicate for 80 min, at four concentrations of cadmium (0, 20, 100 and 200 ppm), taking samples of aqueous solution every 10 min, to be read using atomic absorption equipment. The study determined that the treatment of alginate beads with immobilized Chlorella sp. removed 59.67% of cadmium at an initial concentration of 20 ppm, this being the best removal result.

An optimal medium to culture Chlorella sp., microalgae capable of storage intracellular lipids was obtained. This culture medium consists of a saline base plus carbon-energy and nitrogen sources. Significant factors exerting influence on the culture parameters were selected. Then, by applying response surface methodology coupled to desirability function, an optimal formulation, specific for the heterotrophic growth of Chlorella sp. that allows maximizing lipid concentration was obtained. During the experimental verification, the possibility of replacing commercial glucose by hydrolysates obtained from lignocellulosic materials was evaluated. Biochemical hydrolysate of corn bran allowed obtaining important improvements in lipid concentration. Finally, the optimal formulation was evaluated in an air-lift bioreactor performing a fed-batch culture. Culturing the strain in these conditions allowed rising lipid concentrations.
