RESUMO

In this study, four Brazilian clays (Bofe, Verde-lodo, commercial Fluidgel, and expanded commercial vermiculite) were evaluated for their adsorptive capacity and removal percentage in relation to different toxic metals (Ni2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+). The best results were obtained by expanded vermiculite, with cadmium removal reaching values of 95%. The most promising clay was modified by the sodification process, and the metal cadmium was used to evaluate the ion exchange process. The clays expanded vermiculite (EV) and VNa-sodified vermiculite were evaluated by equilibrium study at 25, 35, and 45 °C. At 25 °C, EV obtained a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.368 mmol/g and sodified vermiculite 0.480 mmol/g, which represents an improvement of 30.4% in modified clay capacity. At 45 °C, the sodified vermiculite reached 0.970 mmol/g adsorption capacity. The Langmuir, Redlich-Peterson Freundlich, and Dubinin-Raduskevich models were adjusted to the results. Langmuir provided the best fit among the models. The thermodynamic quantities (ΔS, ΔH, and ΔG) demonstrated that the process is spontaneous and endothermic and the metal is captured by physisorption and chemisorption in the studied temperature range. For the ion exchange equilibrium, the binary Langmuir and binary Langmuir-Freundlich models were adjusted to the expanded vermiculite and sodified vermiculite isotherms, respectively. Both models were predictive. Thermal analysis indicated good heat resistance even after material modification. The apparent and real densities demonstrated that after each treatment or contamination, the clayey material undergoes contraction in its structure. An improved efficiency of the adsorbent was found after sodification.

RESUMO

Cow dung (CD) is a material that has been used for millennia by humanity as a stabilizer in earth building techniques in vernacular architecture. However, this stabilization has been little addressed scientifically. In this study, the effect of CD additions was assessed on earth mortars produced with one type of earth from Brazil and two other types from Portugal (from Monsaraz and Caparica). The effect of two volumetric proportions of CD additions were assessed: 10% and 20% of earth + sand. The German standard DIN 18947 was used to perform the physical and mechanical tests, and classify the mortars. In comparison to the reference mortars without CD, the additions reduced linear shrinkage and cracking. An increase in flexural and compressive strengths was not observed only in mortars produced with earth from Monsaraz. In mortars produced with the earth from Caparica, the addition of 10% of CD increased flexural strength by 15% and compressive strength by 34%. For mortars produced with the earth from Brazil, the addition of 10% of CD increased these mechanical strengths by 40%. The increase in adhesive strength and water resistance promoted by the CD additions was observed in mortars produced with all three types of earth. Applied on ceramic brick, the proportion of 10% of CD increased the adherence by 100% for the three types of earth. Applied on adobe, the same proportion of CD also increased it more than 50%. For the water immersion test, the CD additions made possible for the mortar specimens not to disintegrate after a 30 min immersion, with the 20% proportion being more efficient. The effects of the CD on mechanical performance, including adhesion, were more significant on the tropical earth mortars but the effects on water resistance were more significant on the Mediterranean earthen mortars. CD has shown its positive effects and potential for both tropical and Mediterranean earthen plasters and renders tested, justifying being further studied as an eco-efficient bio-stabilizer.

RESUMO

Modified clays with organic molecules have many applications, such as the adsorption of pollutants, catalysts, and drug delivery systems. Different methodologies for intercalating these structures with organic moieties can be found in the literature with many purposes. In this paper, a new methodology of modifying Sodium Montmorillonite clays (Na-Mt) with a faster drying time was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), BET, and thermogravimetric analysis (TG and DTG). In the modification process, a mixture of ethyl alcohol, DMSO, and Na-Mt were kept under magnetic stirring for one hour. Statistical analysis was applied to evaluate the effects of the amount of DMSO, temperature, and sonication time on the modified clay (DMSO-SMAT) using a 23-factorial design. XRD and FTIR analyses showed the DMSO intercalation into sodium montmorillonite Argel-T (SMAT). An average increase of 0.57 nm for the interplanar distance was found after swelling with DMSO intercalation. BET analysis revealed a decrease in the surface area (from 41.8933 m2/g to 2.1572 m2/g) of Na-Mt when modified with DMSO. The porosity increased from 1.74 (SMAT) to 1.87 nm (DMSO-SMAT) after the application of the methodology. Thermal analysis showed a thermal stability for the DMSO-SMAT material, and this was used to calculate the DMSO-SMAT formula of Na[Al5Mg]Si12O30(OH)6 · 0.54 DMSO. Statistical analysis showed that only the effect of the amount of DMSO was significant for increasing the interlayer space of DMSO-SMAT. In addition, at room temperature, the drying time of the sample using this methodology was 30 min.

RESUMO

Mineral extraction of coal in the carboniferous region of southern Santa Catarina (Brazil) plays a significant role in the regional economy. However, this activity has severe environmental impacts, with approximately 65% of the extracted mineral being discarded as a rejected material (deposited in landfills). The identification of the technological potential of these materials, based on the geological aspects of the extraction site and the beneficiation operations applied to obtain coal, provides the opportunity to add value to different residual fractions that can be reused. Thus, waste valorization, the main objective of this work, has recently become a strategy for the application of these minerals in the production of clay ceramics using a systematic approach named CPQvA, which means "classification, potentiality, quantity/viability, and applicability". The use of these materials as secondary mineral sources can avoid the deposition of these materials in industrial landfills and help to reduce the pressure on landfills, which receive an average of four million tons of material annually. In this study, the residual fraction, part of the tailing from coal beneficiation, known as coal fines, was evaluated for formulation valorization in clay ceramics. This residual fraction was classified as non-hazardous (class II-A, non-inert). X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis were performed to characterize the moisture content, particle-size distribution, and coal content to be used in the development of different formulations using the residual fraction of coal tailings (ranging from 0 to 40%) that are of technological interest to the sector. Processing parameters, such as firing at different temperatures (750, 800, 850, and 900 °C), were also correlated with these formulations. The results were compared with those of a reference ceramic formulation from the local productive arrangement of Morro da Fumaça (Arranjo Produtivo Local Cerâmica Vermelha de Morro da Fumaça). The various relationships between the materials were characterized in terms of their thermal shrinkage, water absorption, and mechanical resistance. Leaching and solubilization environmental tests revealed that both the industrial standard formulation and formulations with the application of the residual fraction were classified as non-hazardous materials. Thus, the method of using a mining residual fraction in the formulation of clay ceramics proved to be beneficial for the circular economy in the regional mineral sector through productive and environmental gains; the primary mineral resource and energy consumptions and the impacts related to waste generation were reduced. The results of this study can be applied to similar situations in other parts of the world.

RESUMO

High-molecular-weight anionic polyacrylamide was used to analyze the effect of kaolin on the structure of particle aggregates formed in freshwater and seawater. Batch flocculation experiments were performed to determine the size of the flocculated aggregates over time by using focused beam reflectance measurements. Sedimentation tests were performed to analyze the settling rate of the solid-liquid interface and the turbidity of the supernatant. Subsequently, a model that relates the hindered settling rate to the aggregate size was used to determine the mass fractal dimension (Df). Flocculation kinetics revealed that greater amounts of kaolin generated larger aggregates because of its lamellar morphology. The maximum size was between 10 and 20 s of flocculation under all conditions. However, the presence of kaolin reduced the settling rate. The fractal dimension decreased with the increase in the kaolin content, resulting in the formation of irregular and porous aggregates. By contrast, factors such as the flocculation time, water quality, and quartz size had limited influences on the fractal dimension. Seawater produced a clearer supernatant because of its higher ionic strength and precoagulation of particles. Notably, the harmful effect of clays in seawater was reduced.

RESUMO

When soils available for the construction of liners do not display the characteristics necessary for a good performance, mixtures with other materials can be employed for achieving the desired quality. Several researchers have addressed those mixtures from either a geotechnical or a gas diffusion perspective, emphasizing low hydraulic conductivity. However, in recent years, growing attention has been drawn to the ability of liners to mitigate contamination. The literature lacks studies on the use of amendments for soil liners or cover systems to retain potentially toxic metals, which are important inorganic contaminants. This paper provides a systematic review of the literature considering publications available on Web of Science and SpringerLink databases between January 1st, 2012, and December 5th, 2022. The aim of the review was to identify the types of soils and amendments studied as liners or cover systems for such retention of potentially toxic metals, the methodologies of application of the alternative materials in the soils, and the research gaps and perspectives in the field. Seventeen papers that addressed 31 materials as amendments were retrieved. The most studied amendment was coal fly ash, and 17 amendments were residues or by-products, which indicates concerns over waste destination and sustainability. Among the potentially toxic metals analyzed are Pb, Cu, and Cd. Gaps such as lack of pilot, field-scale, and long-term studies, as well as perspectives for future research (e.g., different liner configurations, concomitant mixtures of two or more materials in the soil, and focus on the sustainability of amendments), were identified.

RESUMO

To assess the physical properties and topographical aspect of dental enamel's surface microhardness (KHN), surface roughness (Ra), and color parameters CIELAB (∆Eab*), CIEDE 2000 (∆E00), and whiteness index for dentistry (∆WID) after toothbrushing with experimental toothpaste formulations with the following mineral clay types: kaolin, Sparclay SGY, and Tersil CGY used as abrasive component. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed for topographical analyses purposes. A total of 96 bovine incisors were used in the experiment. They were divided into eight experimental groups (n = 12), namely: NC-negative control (no treatment), CT12-Colgate Total 12®, CMP-Colgate® Máxima Proteção Anticáries, K-kaolin experimental toothpaste, SGY-Sparclay SGY experimental toothpaste; CGY-Tersil CGY experimental toothpaste, SD-SiO2 experimental toothpaste, and CC-CaCO3 experimental toothpaste. All samples were subjected to mechanical brushing protocol with 5000 cycles and kept in artificial saliva with daily exchanges. KHN was analyzed through the mixed linear model for repeated measures over time. Ra was analyzed through nonparametric Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests to compare the groups. Paired Wilcoxon test was run to compare experimental times. ∆WID, ∆Eab*, and ∆E00 were analyzed through Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests. All analyses were performed in R* software, at 5% significance level. EXP_SGY recorded higher KHN than EXP_SiO2 and EXP_CaCO3, whereas EXP_K showed increased Ra in comparison to CMP (p = 0.0229). ∆Eab and ∆E00 were significantly higher in the CT12, EXP_SiO2, and EXP_CaCO3 groups than in the NC and EXP_K (p < 0.0001). There were no significant changes in ∆WID (p = 0.0852). According to SEM results, toothbrushing with experimental toothpastes added with mineral clay types did not have significant impact on enamel's polishing and smoothness. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mineral clays have a broad application in the cosmetic industry, and recently, they have been used in the formulation of vegan toothpaste.

RESUMO

The appearance of skin strongly influences people´s self-esteem and well-being. Among the characteristics that affect the most, we can cite acne and wrinkles. Therefore, minimizing those characteristics by using cosmetics has important value for the consumer. Nowadays, there is a demand for natural ingredients, mainly concerning cosmetic products. The use of clays in beauty care is old, with therapeutic uses since Prehistory. There is an essential advantage in using clays for cosmetic purposes, as it is a low-cost, environmentally friendly, natural, and abundant ingredient, which is chemically inert with a low level of toxicity (when in adequate conditions), easy to apply and remove, dries, and hardens fast. In this research work, we aimed at developing and investigating the effect of formulations containing red, green, and black clays as active components in oiliness reduction, and firmness and elasticity improvement in vivo, as well as characterizing clays mineralogically. All clays presented different compositions. Black clay was the one with the simplest mineralogic content, lowest density, and smallest particle size. It was the richest in Si and Al. Green clay presented expandable smectite and the highest density. Red clay presented the largest particle average size and was the richest in iron content. By thermal analysis, clays presented two characteristic events: the water loss (dehydration) and the dihydroxylation of kaolinite, turning into meta kaolinite. In Sebumetry, clays showed a significant reduction of skin oiliness on the forehead in both concentrations after 2h of contact compared to control, baseline, and placebo. However, after 4h (2h after removal), no significant difference was observed with the control. In the Cutometry, clays did not present significant efficacy in skin firmness and elasticity improvement when compared to control and placebo sites, thus, further studies should be performed comparing the efficacy of different vehicles with dispersed clays. Finally, clay mask formulations were developed with black, red, and green clay dispersed in an oil-free gel vehicle, which proved to be adequate for oily skin

Todas as argilas apresentaram diferentes composições.

The environmental impact of clay mining can be minimized using extractive mineral circularity practices. Combining the available knowledge of the characteristics of different clays with statistical tools was a decisive step for the improved use of mining resources. Through blends, all the mined materials can be incorporated to produce quality ceramic products. This study identified two types of clay from abandoned mining areas in the southern state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. These raw materials were valued together with plastic clay, which is widely used in the region, to develop 10 different formulations using a mixture design method. The clays were characterized using average granulometric distribution, mineralogical composition, and chemical, thermal and plasticity analyses. The specimens were shaped by extrusion, dried in an oven, fired in a muffle furnace and characterized based on their shrinkage, water absorption and compressive strength values. Two clays with varying characteristics-one with low workability and the other with a high silica content-exhibited difficulties (generating defects) in the extrusion shaping process, which compromised the final quality of the ceramic paste. Results showed that incorporating up to 45% by mass of the low-workability clay resulted in an increase in water absorption. The more siliceous clay improved dimensional control; however, its use at high contents (~80%) decreased the mechanical resistance. Nevertheless, when used in controlled amounts, these clays can be beneficial to the production of blocks and bricks because they have the potential to improve some properties of the finished ceramic products.

RESUMO

The use of lead-glazed pottery for cooking and storing food, a widespread practice in Mexico, represents a risk of exposure to lead from the human intrauterine stage. Therefore, a pilot study was carried out by means of the measurement of lead in umbilical cord blood by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) including 69 newborns from the Mexican state capital of Guanajuato, Guanajuato City, where the use of glazed clay is still widespread. Lifestyle and sociodemographic data were collected by interviewing the participating mothers. Hematological parameters and the anthropometry of the newborns and their mothers were analyzed; likewise, the G177C polymorphism in the ALAD gene was genotyped by PCR-RFLP as a marker of genetic vulnerability to lead. The geometric mean of lead in umbilical cord blood was 0.7 µg/dL (< limit of detection = 0.01-28.22). Boys presented higher values than girls (p = 0.03). Only 5.8% of these were above the safety value of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of 3.5 µg/dL. Correlations among lead concentrations, maternal age, weeks of gestation, newborn anthropometry, and hematological parameters were not found; however, the participating mothers who reported using glazed ceramics for cooking or storing food had the highest cord-blood lead concentrations (p = 0.04). Regarding genotyping, 97% had ALAD 1, while 3% had ALAD 1, 2; unfortunately, the sample size did not allow analysis of genetic vulnerability to lead. The preparation and conservation of food in handcrafted clay pottery increased the risk of having cord-blood lead values higher than those recommended by the CDC of 3.5 µg/dL (OR = 5; 95% CI:1.3-23; p = 0.01). Our preliminary results suggest that there continues to be intrauterine exposure to lead in Guanajuato.

RESUMO

Nanofertilizers could promote nutrient efficiency with slow release compared to conventional fertilizers (CF). Most of the applied nitrogen is lost on the soil by leaching, due to the rapid release behavior of CF. Clays can function as a nanosized porous structure to retain and slowly release nutrients. The objective of this study was to evaluate a nitrogenous nanocomposite (NCN) and its effect on leaching and N content of lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The treatments applied were: 100% conventional fertilizer, 100% nitrogenous nanocomposite and the mixture in percentage of CF/NCN 25/75, 50/50, 75/25 and 25/0, 50/0 75/0% on columns of soil with lettuce for 45 days. Leachates at the end of the cycle increased in treatments with NCN. Treatments with NCN have higher N content in the leaf. In regard to biomass growth, leaf area, leaf N, drained variables, electrical conductivity and NO3- content, it was possible to show that the doses of 50 and 75% of NCN match the characteristics of the crop compared to the control, which allows us to use lower doses than those recommended with CFs.

RESUMO

Palygorskite is an aluminum and magnesium silicate characterized by its fibrous morphology, providing it with great versatility in industrial applications, including pharmaceuticals. Although most of the reserves are in the United States, in recent years occurrences of commercially exploited deposits in Brazil have been recorded, mainly in the country's northeast region. This has motivated this study, which analyzes raw Brazilian palygorskite compared to a commercial sample (Pharmasorb® colloidal) to demonstrate its pharmaceutical potential. The chemical and mineral composition of the samples were evaluated for surface properties, granulometry, morphology, crystallography, thermal analysis, and spectroscopy. Raw palygorskite presented 67% purity, against 74% for Pharmasorb® colloidal. The percentage purity relates to the presence of contaminants, mainly carbonates and quartz (harmless under conventional conditions of pharmaceutical use). Furthermore, it was possible to confirm the chemical composition of these phyllosilicates, formed primarily of silicon, aluminum, and magnesium oxides. The crystallographic and spectroscopic profiles were consistent in both samples, showing characteristic peaks for palygorskite (2θ = 8.3°) and bands attributed to fibrous phyllosilicates below 1200 cm-1, respectively. The thermal analysis allowed the identification of the main events of palygorskite, with slight differences between the evaluated samples: loss of water adsorbed onto the surface (~85 °C), removal of water contained in the channels (~200 °C), coordinated water loss (~475 °C), and, finally, the dehydroxylation (>620 °C). The physicochemical characteristics of raw palygorskite align with pharmacopeial specifications, exhibiting a high specific surface area (122 m2/g), moderately negative charge (-13.1 mV), and compliance with the required limits for heavy metals and arsenic. These favorable technical attributes indicate promising prospects for its use as a pharmaceutical ingredient in the production of medicines and cosmetics.

RESUMO

The search for alternative materials to replace ordinary Portland cement has been the object of work that enhances the investigation of the use of pozzolanic materials and the reduction of the carbon footprint with supplementary cementitious materials. However, not all materials are available to meet the large-scale demand for cement replacement. A relevant exception is the calcined clay, a material found worldwide that, when subjected to appropriate heat treatment, presents pozzolanic reactivity and can be used as a supplementary material to cement. This review presents, through a systematic search, methods for measuring the pozzolanic reactivity of calcined clays, namely, direct, indirect, qualitative, quantitative, chemical and physical methods such as electrical conductivity (Lùxan), the force activity index, the modified Chapelle, R3, Frattini test, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The most usual methods to assess the pozzolanic reactivity of calcined clays were exposed and analyzed. It should be pointed out that there is greater use of the Frattini and modified Chapelle methods as well as the analysis of the mechanical strength behavior of the material in cementitious matrices. X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis were exposed as the most used correlation methods but it was also concluded that different tests are needed to generate accurate results.

RESUMO

In this study, spheres of poly (vinylidene fluoride)/clay were synthesized using an easy dripping method (also known as phase inversion). The spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis. Finally, application tests were carried out using commercial cachaça, a popular alcoholic beverage in Brazil. The SEM images revealed that during the solvent exchange process for sphere formation, PVDF tends to form a three-layered structure with a low-porosity intermediate layer. However, the inclusion of clay was observed to reduce this layer and also widen the pores in the surface layer. The results of the batch adsorption tests showed that the composite with 30% clay content in relation to the mass of PVDF was the most effective among those tested, with the removal of 32.4% and 46.8% of the total copper present in the aqueous and ethanolic media, respectively. The adsorption of copper from cachaça in columns containing cut spheres resulted in adsorption indexes above 50% for samples with different copper concentrations. Such removal indices fit the samples within the current Brazilian legislation. Adsorption isotherm tests indicate that the data fit better to the BET model.

RESUMO

Deimatic displays, where sudden changes in prey appearance elicit aversive predator reactions, have been suggested to occur in many taxa. These (often only putative) displays frequently involve different components that may also serve antipredator functions via other mechanisms (e.g., mimicry, warning signalling, body inflation). The Colombian four-eyed frog, Pleurodema brachyops, has been suggested to gain protection against predation through putative deimatic displays where they inflate and elevate the posterior part of their body revealing eye-like colour markings. We exposed stationary artificial frogs to wild predators to test whether the two components (eyespot/colour markings, defensive posture) of their putative deimatic display, and their combination, provide protection from predation without the sudden change in appearance. We did not detect any obvious additive effect of defensive posture and eyespots/colour markings on predation risk, but found a marginally significant trend for model frogs in the resting posture to be less attacked when displaying eyespots/colour markings than when they were not, suggesting that the presence of colour markings/eyespots may provide some protection on its own. Additionally, we found that models in a resting posture were overall more frequently attacked on the head than models in a defensive posture, indicating that a defensive posture alone could help redirect predator attacks to non-vital parts of the body. The trends found in our study suggest that the different components of P. brachyops' coloration may serve different functions during a deimatic display, but further research is needed to elucidate the role of each component when accompanied by sudden prey movement.

RESUMO

In this study, zeolites prepared by the hydrothermal method from Ecuadorian clay were combined with the precursor clay and with the semiconductor ZnTiO3/TiO2 prepared by the sol-gel method to adsorb and photodegrade cyanide species from aqueous solutions. These compounds were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-rays, point of zero charge, and specific surface area. The adsorption characteristics of the compounds were measured using batch adsorption experiments as a function of pH, initial concentration, temperature, and contact time. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model fit the adsorption process better. The equilibrium state in the reaction systems at pH = 7 was reached around 130 and 60 min in the adsorption and photodegradation experiments, respectively. The maximum cyanide adsorption value (73.37 mg g-1) was obtained with the ZC compound (zeolite + clay), and the maximum cyanide photodegradation capacity (90.7%) under UV light was obtained with the TC compound (ZnTiO3/TiO2 + clay). Finally, the reuse of the compounds in five consecutive treatment cycles was determined. The results reflect that the compounds synthesized and adapted to the extruded form could potentially be used for the removal of cyanide from wastewater.

RESUMO

The incorporation of polymeric components into aerogels based on clay produces a significant improvement in the physical and thermal properties of the aerogels. In this study, clay-based aerogels were produced from a ball clay by incorporation of angico gum and sodium alginate using a simple, ecologically acceptable mixing method and freeze-drying. The compression test showed a low density of spongy material. In addition, both the compressive strength and the Young's modulus of elasticity of the aerogels showed a progression associated to the decrease in pH. The microstructural characteristics of the aerogels were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical structure was studied by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR). The TGA curves from a non-oxidizing atmosphere indicated that the clay had a mass loss of 9% above 500 °C and that due to the presence of polysaccharides, the aerogels presented a decomposition of 20% at temperatures above 260 °C. The DSC curves of the aerogels demonstrated a displacement in higher temperatures. In conclusion, the results showed that aerogels of ball clay with the incorporation of polysaccharides, which are still minimally studied, have potential application as thermal insulation considering the mechanical and thermal results obtained.

Background the increase in life expectancy is coupled with the elderly's need to function in its media and guarantee full longevity. Objective to determine the effectiveness of peloidtherapy in older adults with osteoarthritis of the knee. Method a quasi-experimental intervention study was carried out in 30 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, selected by simple randomization, who were treated in the health area of Yaguaramas (Abreus, Cienfuegos), between March and June of 2021. A general survey was carried out. The evolution of pain was determined using the Likert scale, and joint limitation was analyzed by measuring the knee joint arc with the goniometer. Results there was a predominance of patients in the age group of 66-70 years old and of the female sex; with evolution time between 5-10 years (60%); and with both knees affected (56.7%). The main signs and symptoms were pain (100%) and limitation of joint movement (93.3%), which decreased after treatment. 53.3% reported light pain before treatment; after treatment, 83.3% described absence of pain. 76.7% of the patients manifested limitation in knee flexion, which after treatment decreased to 13.3%. Conclusions peloidtherapy has a positive influence on older adults with osteoarthritis of the knee, by improving their functional status and personal independence, as well as reducing the demands for medical services.

RESUMO

Many primate species have been observed descending to the forest floor to intentionally consume soil (geophagy) at licks. The practice of geophagy is assumed to provide health benefits, such as mineral supplementation and/or gastrointestinal tract protection. We collected data on geophagy events through the use of camera traps at Tambopata National Reserve in southeastern Peru. Two geophagy sites were monitored for 42 months, during which time we observed repeated geophagy events by a group of large-headed capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella macrocephalus). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of its kind for the species. Geophagy was rare, with only 13 events recorded over the study period. All but one event took place during the dry season, and 85% of events took place in the late afternoon between 1600 and 1800 hours. The monkeys were observed consuming soil both in situ and ex situ, and displayed heightened vigilance behavior during geophagy events. Although the small sample size makes it difficult to draw clear conclusions as to the drivers of this behavior, the seasonal timing of the events and the high percentage of clay in the consumed soils suggest that these events are linked to the detoxification of secondary plant compounds in the monkeys' diet.

RESUMO

Removal of emerging contaminants, such as antibiotics, from wastewater by adsorption is a simple, low-cost, and high-performance process; however, regeneration and reuse of the exhausted adsorbent are necessary to make the process economically viable. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of electrochemical-based regeneration of clay-type materials. For this, the calcined Verde-lodo (CVL) clay was saturated with the antibiotics ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in one-component systems by an adsorption process and then subjected to photo-assisted electrochemical oxidation (0.45 A, 0.05 mol/L NaCl, UV-254 nm, and 60 min), which promotes both pollutant degradation and adsorbent regeneration. The external surface of the CVL clay was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after the adsorption process. The influence of regeneration time was evaluated for the CVL clay/OFL and CVL clay/CIP systems, and the results demonstrate high regeneration efficiencies after 1 h of photo-assisted electrochemical oxidation. Clay stability during regeneration was investigated by four successive cycles in different aqueous matrices (ultrapure water, synthetic urine, and river water). The results indicated that the CVL clay is relatively stable under the photo-assisted electrochemical regeneration process. Furthermore, CVL clay was able to remove antibiotics even in the presence of natural interfering agents. The hybrid adsorption/oxidation process applied here demonstrated the electrochemical-based regeneration potential of CVL clay for the treatment of emerging contaminants, since it can be operated quickly (1h of treatment) and with lower consumption of energy (3.93 kWh kg-1) than the traditional method of thermal regeneration (10 kWh kg-1).
