RESUMO

This study is the first to report the results of a scan of the official webpages of all public and private colleges and universities in the state of Oregon, including but not limited to student health services webpages and student handbooks, to identify available services, policies, and educational information on HPV vaccination. The purpose is to describe vaccination services (with a focus on the HPV vaccine), prevention efforts, and institutional policies on vaccination on college and university websites in Oregon. An online scan was conducted from September to November 2020 to collect and describe data from college/university websites across Oregon. Colleges/universities were obtained from the National Center for Education Statistics website. The final sample included 48 colleges/universities. Twenty colleges/universities have a health center with 11 providing the HPV vaccine on campus: most are large public universities and non-religious private colleges. A few religious private universities and one community college offer the vaccine on campus. More than half (n = 26) of Oregon colleges/universities had a webpage specifically designated for immunization information, but only 11 mentioned the HPV vaccine on their immunization webpage. Twelve colleges/universities recommend, and none require the vaccine. Information on HPV vaccination services and education was limited on college/university websites, especially on community college and religious private university websites. Most colleges/universities with a student health center recommend and offer the HPV vaccine on campus. College/university websites may be a low-cost and effective medium to increase HPV vaccination awareness, encourage immunizations, and prevent HPV-associated cancers.

RESUMO

The intricacies of the unique educational and leadership development trajectories of Black PhD-prepared nurse scientists are largely invisible in nursing faculty development literature. A broadened understanding of nursing leadership development and science mentorship can facilitate support for the next generation of Black nurse scientists. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can serve as formative launch pads for nurse scientist development. However, the role of HBCUs and strategies for supporting robust educational and mentor/training opportunities for Black PhD-prepared nurse scientists require thoughtful description and application. Incorporating an intrapersonal, interpersonal, and integrative leadership framework, we describe and synthesize four Black nurse scientists and HBCU graduates' experiences to highlight early science mentorship and leadership resilience through the excellent educational foundations provided at HBCUs.

RESUMO

The Chinese sports spirit serves a value-oriented purpose, and the cultural resources and typical cases of sports spirit are practical means for fostering the identification of socialist core values. The inclusion and coordination of ideological and political courses in universities should be carefully considered within the broader framework of "cultivating morality and cultivating people." This study aims to offer a comprehensive reference for the implementation of ideological and political education within the context of physical education. The article utilises SPSS 20.0 statistical software and an Excel worksheet to collect and organise survey questionnaire data obtained by our research institute. It performs quantitative analysis tasks, including data calculation and the creation of graphical representations. Additionally, research is conducted using methods such as questionnaires, surveys, and literature reviews. A sample of 300 students will be randomly selected from the University of Science and Technology. Questionnaires will be distributed to these students, and on-site filling and recycling methods will be employed. The study will focus on the current state of ideological and political education in college physical education. The combined percentage of male and female students who perceived the physical education class as reasonable was 22.87% of the total student population. However, a significant proportion of both male and female students believe that it is inappropriate to open this class. The empirical study on the proficiency of sports skills revealed that, following a mandatory nine-year education, students admitted to universities across all levels are capable of mastering 1-2 sports disciplines, constituting 68.48% of the overall population. We can establish a "unified library system," "ideological and political class competition," and other "walking classes" to form various teacher groups in the ideological and political class. These groups may include teachers in the ideological and political classes as well as Olympic champions.(AU)

RESUMO

Colleges and universities are not only an important base for cultivating young talents, but also the forefront of ideological education. Strengthening ideological education in colleges and universities is related to the long-term peace and stability of the party and the country. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a great creation of the Chinese nation and a treasure of ancient Chinese science. In the face of COVID -19, the TCM delivered in a satisfactory answer, which once again blessed the life and health of the people. TCM culture condenses the experience and wisdom of the Chinese nation for nearly one thousand years, and has unique national characteristics and spiritual pursuit. It is a great creation of Chinese culture. In the context of the new era, integrating TCM culture into ideological education in colleges and universities and giving full play to the function of TCM culture as the "key" of Chinese civilization is not only the urgent call of moral education in colleges and universities, but also the realistic development requirement of contemporary China.

RESUMO

The World Health Organization defines social determinants of health as "the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life." This current journal issue has the theme of structural determinants of health. In 2016 (Creative Nursing Vol. 22), we published 49 articles in four issues addressing Determinants of Health: Social Determinants, Structural Determinants, Caregiver Determinants, and Global Determinants. This editorial presents the highlights of those four journal issues, then connects each of the articles in this current issue to the theme; these articles reveal the systems and structures that support our caring from many angles, levels, and perspectives. Readers are challenged to recognize the potential, embedded in every system and structure, for disparities in the provision of our care.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection among young adults ages 15-25 years in the United States (US). Although HPV vaccines are recommended for individuals ages through 26 years, vaccine completion rates remain substantially low. METHODS: Accordingly, our study utilized a comprehensive - Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) of behavior change to systematically identify facilitators and barriers to catch-up HPV vaccinations. Five databases - Medline, Embase, CINAHL, ERIC, and PsycINFO were searched from January 2009 to July 2019 for empirical studies using quantitative and qualitative methods to assess HPV vaccine uptake among males ages 18-26 years within US college and university settings. The TDF analytic process included a content analysis using the mixed deductive-inductive approach to extract, analyze and categorize data into TDF domains/themes and sub-themes. RESULTS: Overall, 17 studies were selected for data extraction. We identified eleven key TDF domains that influenced HPV vaccination behavior among college male students: 'knowledge' (82% of included studies), 'environmental context and resources' (53%), 'beliefs about consequences' (53%), 'unrealistic optimism' (50%) and 'pessimism' (6%), 'emotion' (50%), 'social influences' (50%), 'beliefs about capabilities' (41%), 'intention' (24%), 'reinforcement' (18%), 'social professional role and identity'(12%), and 'behavioral regulation' (12%). Barriers influencing HPV vaccine uptake included lack of knowledge and awareness regarding HPV infections, HPV vaccine safety, effectiveness, side effects, and costs; absence of health providers' recommendations; lack of healthcare and health insurance; low levels of perceived susceptibility and severity for HPV infections; HPV vaccine misinformation; as well as social stigma and peer influences regarding HPV vaccinations. Enablers for HPV vaccine uptake included high levels of perceived benefits for HPV vaccines. DISCUSSION: Our study theoretically identified factors influencing HPV vaccinations. This could inform the efficient planning, support, and implementation of interventions that facilitate catch-up HPV vaccination practices among high-risk males within college/university settings.

RESUMO

University emergency management ability is an important part of university safety management. To evaluate university emergency management ability scientifically, objectively, and accurately, this study constructs three first-level indexes, namely, pre-prevention ability, in-process control ability, and post-recovery ability, and 15 s-level indexes, including the establishment of emergency management institutions; the construction of emergency plans; the allocation of emergency personnel, equipment, and materials; and the training and exercise of emergency plans. On the basis of the backpropagation (BP) neural network method and MATLAB platform, an evaluation model of university emergency management ability is constructed. The neural network evaluation model is trained with sample data, and a university in Beijing is adopted as an example to verify the good prediction effect of the model. The results show that applying the evaluation model based on the BP neural network to the emergency management ability of colleges and universities is feasible. The model provides a new method to evaluate the emergency management ability of colleges and universities.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Black students attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs) versus historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) report more harmful discrimination and develop worse mental health outcomes, potentially offsetting the established benefits of college for lowering dementia incidence. METHODS: Black participants in two cohorts (the Kaiser Healthy Aging and Diverse Life Experiences [KHANDLE] and the Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans [STAR]) who had attended college (N = 716) self-reported the college name (classified as HBCU vs. PWI) and completed three waves of executive function (EF) and verbal episodic memory (VEM) assessments. HBCU effects on cognitive level and decline were estimated using adjusted linear mixed-effects models. RESULTS: HBCU (vs. PWI) attendees averaged better EF (ß = 0.05 [-0.22, 0.32]) and VEM (ß = 0.21 [-0.06, 0.46]) at age 70 though neither association was statistically significant. HBCU attendance was associated with slightly faster VEM decline (ß = -0.03 [-0.05, 0.00]). DISCUSSION: Harmonized analyses with larger studies are needed to estimate important effects of HBCU attendance. HIGHLIGHTS: Higher education is robustly linked to lower dementia risk, yet Black-White inequities persist among college-educated adults. Black students attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs) versus historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) report more harmful discrimination and develop worse mental health outcomes, which may offset the established benefits of college for lowering dementia incidence. HBCU (vs. non-HBCU) attendees averaged better executive function and verbal episodic memory (VEM) at average age 70, though confidence intervals were wide and associations were not statistically significant, and averaged slightly faster decline in VEM. Harmonized analyses using larger nationally representative studies are likely needed to avoid underestimating the health effects of HBCU attendance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The United States continues to be plagued with pervasive health disparities. Leading health and professional organizations acknowledge structural racism as a contributing factor for the lack of a racially diverse nursing workforce particularly those serving in leadership roles which could help to mitigate health disparities among historically stigmatized populations. PURPOSE: Purpose Lack of funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and lack of meaningful partnerships, stymie efforts that can be made by nursing programs at HBCUs. DISCUSSION: Discussion This position paper examines collaborative actions that can address upstream factors that perpetuate healthcare disparities through deep engagement between the policymakers, professional associations, industry, and educational institutions. METHODS: Faculty representing HBCU's and predominately White institutions, professional organizations, and staff met via videoconference to refine the focus of the paper, determine topic areas for writing teams, and refine details which occurred during weekly meetings. CONCLUSION: To disengage from structural racism, three critical recommendations are amplified with associated examples.

RESUMO

This study explores whether US post-secondary institutions (PPI) follow philosophies to foster inclusive communities, providing resources for those individuals with disabilities thrive socially, personally, and academically, while there have been no thorough studies conducted to determine web accessibility of the nation's top-ranked PPI library webpages. Additionally, this study pioneers in comparison with the accessibility of PPI's library homepages fighting COVID-19. The study evaluated the library homepages of the premium PPIs based on Money.com's 2019 list of "The Best Colleges in America" via the WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool. The outcomes determined that most of the library homepages analyzed were littered with numerous errors, and the shift to online-based research in learning had no significant impact on the number of errors WAVE detected. The disconcerting findings of this study demonstrate the overall failure to recognize the importance of web accessibility or perhaps even the indifference toward accessibility on the part of the PPI community.

RESUMO

Objective: This study examined the prevalence of food insecurity (FI) among students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the Southeastern United States. Participants: Students attending four HBCUs (N = 351) completed an anonymous Web-based survey. Methods: Food insecurity was assessed using the 2-item Hunger Vital Sign Tool. Summary statistics were used to quantify FI experiences. Logistic regression was conducted to determine if student demographic characteristics were significantly associated with FI outcomes. Results: Nearly 3 in 4 students (72.9%) reported some level of FI in the past year. Students representing all levels of postsecondary education reported FI. Meal plan participation did not prevent FI. Conclusions: Students attending HBCUs experience FI at levels that exceed estimates reported among students attending predominantly White institutions. More work is needed to understand the lived experience of food-insecure HBCU students as a means to ensure institution-level food policies support student academic success and wellbeing.

RESUMO

Ecological changes are creating disruptions that often disproportionately impact communities of color and economically disadvantaged areas. Scientists who study the consequences experienced by these communities are uniquely suited to bring the public into their work as a way of setting conditions that enable impacted residents to empower themselves to advance environmental and community change. In addition to involving community stakeholders in the process of science, community science can be used to motivate learning and increase engagement of students. Here we highlight a case study of one way a historically Black college involved local communities and students in water quality monitoring efforts to examine the role of the environment in human health. Students in an introductory-level environmental toxicology course collaborated with community members to track pollution and monitor conditions in an urban, impaired stream. Students participated in bi-monthly water quality monitoring alongside community watershed researchers and an annual day-long multisite sampling event with community residents and organizations. Through this engagement, students and community members contributed to the collection of data, learned about the significance of their results, and translated findings into strategies to advance watershed restoration, health, quality of life, and environmental justice goals.

RESUMO

The foundation of the university lies in the cultivation of virtue and people. The construction of the ideological and political work system in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) colleges and universities embodies the Marxist on the theory of all-sided development of human beings, the concept and practical requirements of "three-wide education", and the special laws of the ideological and political work in TCM colleges and universities. It is the realistic need to carry out the strategy of cultivating good quality, to innovate and develop the system of ideological and political work, and to improve the quality of TCM personnel training. TCM Colleges and universities should dig deeply into the ideological and political elements of TCM resources, integrate "virtue establishment and people cultivation" into the whole process of talent training, actively explore new ideas, new ways and new methods of constructing the ideological and political work system of TCM colleges and universities, and strive to cultivate high-quality TCM talents who shoulder the task of national rejuvenation.
