RESUMO

Global change confronts organisms with multiple stressors causing nonadditive effects. Persistent stress, however, leads to adaptation and related trade-offs. The question arises: How can the resulting effects of these contradictory processes be predicted? Here we show that Gammarus pulex from agricultural streams were more tolerant to clothianidin (mean EC50 148 µg/L) than populations from reference streams (mean EC50 67 µg/L). We assume that this increased tolerance results from a combination of physiological acclimation, epigenetic effects, and genetic evolution, termed as adaptation. Further, joint exposure to pesticide mixture and temperature stress led to synergistic interactions of all three stressors. However, these combined effects were significantly stronger in adapted populations as shown by the model deviation ratio (MDR) of 4, compared to reference populations (MDR = 2.7). The pesticide adaptation reduced the General-Stress capacity of adapted individuals, and the related trade-off process increased vulnerability to combined stress. Overall, synergistic interactions were stronger with increasing total stress and could be well predicted by the stress addition model (SAM). In contrast, traditional models such as concentration addition (CA) and effect addition (EA) substantially underestimated the combined effects. We conclude that several, even very disparate stress factors, including population adaptations to stress, can act synergistically. The strong synergistic potential underscores the critical importance of correctly predicting multiple stresses for risk assessment.

In recent years, studies have focused on the combined ecological risks posed by microplastics and other organic pollutants. Although both microplastics and progestin residues are frequently detected in the aquatic environments, their ecological implications remain unknown. Adult zebrafish were exposed to polystyrene microplastics (PS, 200 nm, 200 µg/L), norethindrone (NET, 69.6 ng/L), and their mixture (200 µg/L PS + 63.1 ng/L NET) for 30 days. The results demonstrated that exposure to PS and NET resulted in gill damage. Notably, the PS and PS+NET exhibited a significant decrease in glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) content, as well as reduced antioxidase activity in the gills. The oxidative stress in PS+NET primarily originated from PS. The PS, NET, or their mixture resulted in a decrease in testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) levels in female. Furthermore, compared to NET, the PS+NET showed a significant reduction in E2 levels, thereby augmenting the inhibitory effect on reproductive ability mediated by NET. However, males showed an increase in 11-ketodihydrotestosterone (11-KT) content, accompanied by a significant decrease in spermatogonia (Sg) and increase in spermatocytes (Sc). Consequently, it can be inferred that PS enhances the androgenic effect of NET. In female fish brain, NET alone resulted in transcriptional down-regulation of partial hormone receptors; however, co-administration of PS effectively mitigated the interference effects. Furthermore, transcriptional downregulation of 17-alpha-hydroxylase (cyp17), hydroxysteroid 3-beta dehydrogenase (hsd3b), estrogen receptor 1 (esr1), and estrogen receptor 2a (esr2b) genes in the ovary was found to be associated with the androgenic activity induced by NET. Moreover, in comparison to PS or NET alone, PS+NET resulted in a notable decrease in Cetobacterium abundance and an increase in Aeromonas population, suggesting that the co-exposure of PS+NET may exacerbate intestinal burden. The findings highlight the importance of studying the combined toxicity of PS and NET.

It is crucial to investigate the effects of mixtures of contaminants on aquatic organisms, because they reflect what occurs in the environment. Cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) are metals that co-occur in aquatic ecosystems, and information is scarce on their joint toxicity to Chlorophyceae using multiple endpoints. We evaluated the effects of isolated and combined Cd and Ni metals on multiple endpoints of the chlorophycean Raphidocelis subcapitata. The results showed that Cd inhibited cell density, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production (up to 308% at 0.075 mg L-1 of Cd), chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence (0.050-0.100 mg L-1 of Cd), cell size (0.025-0.100 mg L-1 of Cd), and cell complexity in all concentrations evaluated. Nickel exposure decreased ROS production by up to 25% at 0.25 mg L-1 of Ni and Chl a fluorescence in all concentrations assessed. Cell density and oxygen-evolving complex (initial fluorescence/variable fluorescence [F0/Fv]) were only affected at 0.5 mg L-1 of Ni. In terms of algal growth, mixture toxicity showed antagonism at low doses and synergism at high doses, with a dose level change greater than the median inhibitory concentration. The independent action model and dose-level-dependent deviation best fit our data. Cadmium and Ni mixtures resulted in a significant increase in cell size and cell complexity, as well as changes in ROS production and Chl a fluorescence, and they did not affect the photosynthetic parameters. Among cereal contaminants, mycotoxins are of concern due to their importance in terms of food and feed safety. The difficulty in establishing a diagnosis for mycotoxicosis relies on the fact that the effects are most often subclinical for chronic exposure and the most common scenario is multi-contamination by various toxins. Mycotoxin co-occurrence is a major food safety concern as additive or even synergic toxic impacts may occur, but also regarding current regulations as they mainly concern individual mycotoxin levels in specific foods and feed in the food chain. However, due to the large number of possible mycotoxin combinations, there is still limited knowledge on co-exposure toxicity data, which depends on several parameters. In this context, this systematic review aims to provide an overview of the toxic effects of two regulated mycotoxins, namely ochratoxin A and fumonisin B1. This review focused on the 2012-2022 period and analysed the occurrence in Europe of the selected mycotoxins in different food matrices (cereals and cereal-derived products), and their toxic impact, alone or in combination, on in vitro intestinal and hepatic human cells. To better understand and evaluate the associated risks, further research is needed using new approach methodologies (NAM), such as in vitro 3D models. KEY CONTRIBUTION: Cereals and their derived products are the most important food source for humans and feed for animals worldwide. This manuscript is a state of the art review of the literature over the last ten years on ochratoxin A and fumonisin B1 mycotoxins in these products in Europe as well as their toxicological effects, alone and in combination, on human cells. Future perspectives and some challenges regarding the assessment of toxicological effects of mycotoxins are also discussed.

BACKGROUND: Sleep health and obesity may affect the risk of female infertility. However, few studies focused on the interaction of obesity and sleep health on the female infertility risk. This study aimed to evaluate the combined impact of trouble sleeping / sleep duration and overweight/obesity/ abdominal obesity on the risk of female infertility. METHODS: The data for this cross-sectional study was obtained from National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, which provided information on trouble sleeping, sleep duration, overweight/obesity, abdominal obesity, and confounding factors. Adopted weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression models to explore the relationship between trouble sleeping, sleep duration, overweight/obesity, abdominal obesity, and the risk of infertility, respectively, and the combined effect of trouble sleeping and overweight/obesity, trouble sleeping and abdominal obesity, sleep duration and overweight/obesity, sleep duration and abdominal obesity, on the female infertility risk. RESULTS: This study included a total of 1,577 women, and 191 were diagnosed with infertility. Women with infertility had a higher proportion of people with overweight/obesity, abdominal obesity, sleep duration ≤ 7 h and trouble sleeping than those with non-infertility. The result indicated that trouble sleeping [odds ratio (OR) = 2.25, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.49-3.39], sleep duration ≤ 7 h (OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.03-2.48), and the combined impact of abdominal obesity and trouble sleeping (OR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.28-3.72), abdominal obesity and sleep duration ≤ 7 h (OR = 2.00, 95% CI: 1.17-3.40), overweight/obesity and trouble sleeping (OR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.24-4.26), and overweight/obesity and sleep duration ≤ 7 h (OR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.01-3.49) were associated with increased odds of infertility, respectively. CONCLUSION: There was combined effects of trouble sleeping/sleep duration ≤ 7 h and overweight/obesity/ abdominal obesity on increased odds of female infertility.

Co-exposure soil studies of pollutants are necessary for an appropriate ecological risk assessment. Here, we examined the effects of two-component mixtures of metal oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs or goethite NPs) with the insecticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) under laboratory conditions in short-term artificial soil assays using Eisenia andrei earthworms. We characterized NPs and their mixtures by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential, and evaluated effects on metal accumulation, oxidative stress enzymes, and neurotoxicity related biomarkers in single and combined toxicity assays. Exposure to ZnO NPs increased Zn levels compared to control in single and combined exposure (ZnO NPs + CPF) at 72 h and 7 days, respectively. In contrast, there was no indication of Fe increase in organisms exposed to goethite NPs. One of the most notable effects on oxidative stress biomarkers was produced by single exposure to goethite NPs, showing that the worms were more sensitive to goethite NPs than to ZnO NPs. Acetylcholinesterase and carboxylesterase activities indicated that ZnO NPs alone were not neurotoxic to earthworms, but similar degrees of inhibition were observed after single CPF and ZnO NPs + CPF exposure. Differences between single and combined exposure were found for catalase and superoxide dismutase (goethite NPs) and for glutathione S-transferase (ZnO NPs) activities, mostly at 72 h. These findings suggest a necessity to evaluate mixtures of NPs with co-existing contaminants in soil, and that the nature of metal oxide NPs and exposure time are relevant factors to be considered when assessing combined toxicity, as it may have an impact on ecotoxicological risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: As a primary form of work-related violence in the healthcare sector, patient mistreatment negatively impacts nurses' well-being. To date, there has yet reached a definitive conclusion on the mediating mechanism and boundary conditions behind the influence of patient mistreatment on nurses' emotional exhaustion. METHODS: This study employed a convenience sampling method to recruit a sample of 1672 nurses from public hospitals in Western China. The data were collected through anonymous self-report questionnaires and analyzed using hierarchical regression and conditional processes to investigate a theoretical framework encompassing patient mistreatment, emotional exhaustion, social sharing of negative events, organizational support, and trait resilience. RESULTS: Patient mistreatment led to emotional exhaustion among nurses (ß = 0.625, p <.001), and social sharing of negative events mediated this positive relationship (effect = 0.073, SE = 0.013). The combined effects of organizational support and resilience moderated the mediating effect of the social sharing of negative events between patient mistreatment and emotional exhaustion (ß=-0.051, p <.05). Specifically, nurses with a high level of resilience would benefit from organizational support to alleviate emotional exhaustion caused by patient mistreatment. CONCLUSIONS: This study validated a significant positive association between patient mistreatment and emotional exhaustion, which aligns with previous research findings. Integrating conservation of resources theory and goal progress theory, we addressed previous contradictory findings on the impact of social sharing of negative events on emotional exhaustion. Social sharing of negative events served as a mediator between patient mistreatment and emotional exhaustion. Additionally, the moderating effect of organizational support on the relationship between social sharing of negative events and emotional exhaustion depended on individual trait of resilience.

Exploring the impact of complex urban morphology on the urban heat island (UHI) effect is essential for sustainable environmental management and enhancing human well-being. This study explored the combined cooling effect of street canyon geometry and the surrounding built environment using a CatBoost model and the Shapley method. The findings indicated that in streets with low building height and density, a high proportion of sky and vegetation and a flatter skyline are conductive to mitigate UHI effect. In streets with high building height and density, a lower proportion of sky and vegetation, and a well-proportioned skyline, can effectively mitigate UHI effect. Regardless of the building density and height around the street, street trees are the optimal choice for greening construction and improvement of large and medium-sized cities in China, given their high controllability and the current urban stock background. Therefore, reasonable control and allocation of street trees can effectively adjust the street canyon geometry, providing suitable cooling strategies for streets with different surrounding built environments. This study proposed a method to mitigate the UHI effect through street canyon geometry, which can be extended to other high-density urban thermal environment studies and guide policymakers on street construction and urban design.

The adverse impacts of microplastics (MPs) or ocean acidification (OA) on mollusks have been widely reported, however, little is known about their combined effects on mollusks. The oysters Crassostrea gigas were exposed to two sizes of polystyrene MPs with 1 × 104 particles/L (small polystyrene MPs (SPS-MPs): 6 µm, large polystyrene MPs (LPS-MPs): 50-60 µm) at two pH levels (7.7 and 8.1) for 14 days. The antagonistic effects between MPs and OA on oysters were mainly observed. Single SPS-MPs exposure can induce CAT enzyme activity and LPO level in gills, while LPS-MPs exposure alone can increase PGK and PEPCK gene expression in digestive glands. Ocean acidification can increase clearance rate and inhibit antioxidant enzyme activity, whereas combined exposure of OA and SPS-MPs can affect the metabolomic profile of digestive glands. This study emphasized that the potential toxic effects of MPs under the scene of climate change should be concerned.

Backgrounds: The validity of heart rate variability (HRV) has been substantiated in mental workload assessments. However, cognitive tasks often coincide with physical exertion in practical mental work, but their synergic effects on HRV remains insufficiently established. The study aims were to investigate the combined effects of cognitive and physical load on autonomic nerve functions. Methods: Thirty-five healthy male subjects (aged 23.5 ± 3.3 years) were eligible and enrolled in the study. The subjects engaged in n-back cognitive tasks (1-back, 2-back, and 3-back) under three distinct physical conditions, involving isotonic contraction of the left upper limb with loads of 0 kg, 3 kg, and 5 kg. Electrocardiogram signals and cognitive task performance were recorded throughout the tasks, and post-task assessment of subjective experiences were conducted using the NASA-TLX scale. Results: The execution of n-back tasks resulted in enhanced perceptions of task-load feelings and increased reaction times among subjects, accompanied by a decline in the accuracy rate (p < 0.05). These effects were synchronously intensified by the imposition of physical load. Comparative analysis with a no-physical-load scenario revealed significant alterations in the HRV of the subjects during the cognitive task under moderate and high physical conditions. The main features were a decreased power of the high frequency component (p < 0.05) and an increased low frequency component (p < 0.05), signifying an elevation in sympathetic activity. This physiological response manifested similarly at both moderate and high physical levels. In addition, a discernible linear correlation was observed between HRV and task-load feelings, as well as task performance under the influence of physical load (p < 0.05). Conclusion: HRV can serve as a viable indicator for assessing mental workload in the context of physical activities, making it suitable for real-world mental work scenarios.

Triclosan (TCS) is an antibacterial agent commonly used in personal care products. Due to its widespread use and improper disposal, it is also a pervasive contaminant, particularly in aquatic environments. When released into water bodies, TCS can induce deleterious effects on developmental and physiological aspects of aquatic organisms and also interact with environmental stressors such as weather, metals, pharmaceuticals, and microplastics. Multiple studies have described the adverse effects of TCS on aquatic organisms, but few have reported on the interactions between TCS and other environmental conditions and pollutants. Because aquatic environments include a mix of contaminants and natural factors can correlate with contaminants, it is important to understand the toxicological outcomes of combinations of substances. Due to its lipophilic characteristics, TCS can interact with a wide range of substances and environmental stressors in aquatic environments. Here, we identify a need for caution when using TCS by describing not only the effects of exposure to TCS alone on aquatic organisms but also how toxicity changes when it acts in combination with multiple environmental stressors.

Rising ocean temperatures are driving unprecedented changes in global marine ecosystems. Meanwhile, there is growing concern about microplastic and nanoplastic (MNP) contamination, which can endanger marine organisms. Increasing ocean warming (OW) and plastic pollution inevitably cause marine organisms to interact with MNPs, but relevant studies remain sparse. Here, we investigated the interplay between ocean warming and MNP in the marine water flea Diaphanosoma celebensis. We found that combined exposure to MNPs and OW induced reproductive failure in the F2 generation. In particular, the combined effects of OW and MNPs on the F2 generation were associated with key genes related to reproduction and stress response. Moreover, populations of predatory bacteria were significantly larger under OW and MNP conditions during F2 generations, suggesting a potential link between altered microbiota and host fitness. These results were supported by a host transcriptome and microbiota interaction analysis. This research sheds light on the complex interplay between environmental stressors, their multigenerational effects on marine organisms, and the function of the microbiome.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin, and triadimefon (TDF) is a triazole fungicide. These compounds are prevalent in the environment, and their residues have been detected in crops. However, the precise health risks associated with mycotoxins and fungicides are not fully elucidated. In this work, five-week-old mice were gavage with OTA (0.3 and 1.5 mg/kg/day), TDF (10 and 50 mg/kg/day), and OTA + TDF (0.3 + 10 and 1.5 + 50 mg/kg/day) for 28 days. Exposure to OTA, TDF, and OTA + TDF led to significant alterations in liver total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and glucose (GLU) levels, as well as in genes associated with glycolipid metabolism in mice. Reduced acylcarnitine levels in serum indicated that OTA, TDF, and co-exposure inhibited fatty acid (FA) ß-oxidation. Furthermore, OTA and TDF disrupted the integrality of the gut barrier function and altered the structure of the intestinal microbiota. These findings suggested that OTA, TDF, and their co-exposure might disrupt the intestinal barrier, alter the structure of the microbiota, and subsequently inhibit FA ß-oxidation, indicating the interference of OTA and TDF with glycolipid-related intestinal barrier dysfunction. Moreover, our data revealed a toxic additive effect between OTA and TDF, providing a foundation for assessing the combined toxicity risk of mycotoxins and fungicides.

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, and their accumulation and combined effects are considered emerging threats that may affect biodiversity and ecosystem function. The particle size of microplastics plays an important role in their combined effects with antibiotics. Submerged macrophytes are crucial in maintaining the health and stability of freshwater ecosystems. However, little is known about the combined effects of different particle size of MPs and antibiotics on freshwater plants, particularly their effects on submerged macrophyte communities. Thus, there is an urgent need to study their effects on the macrophyte communities to provide essential information for freshwater ecosystem management. In the present study, a mesocosm experiment was conducted to explore the effects of three particle sizes (5 µm, 50 µm, and 500 µm) of polystyrene-microplastics (PSMPs) (75 mg/L), tetracycline (TC) (50 mg/L), and their co-pollutants on interactions between Hydrilla verticillata and Elodea nuttallii. Our results showed that the effects of MPs are size-dependent on macrophytes at the community level rather than at the population level, and that small and medium sized MPs can promote the growth of the two test macrophytes at the community level. In addition, macrophytes at the community level have a stronger resistance to pollutant stress than those at the population level. Combined exposure to MPs and TC co-pollutants induces species-specific responses and antagonistic toxic effects on the physio-biochemical traits of submerged macrophytes. Our study provides evidence that MPs and co-pollutants not only affect the morphology and physiology at the population level but also the interactions between macrophytes. Thus, there are promising indications on the potential consequences of MPs and co-pollutants on macrophyte community structure, which suggests that future studies should focus on the effects of microplastics and their co-pollutants on aquatic macrophytes at the community level rather than only at the population level. This will improve our understanding of the profound effects of co-pollutants in aquatic environments on the structure and behavior of aquatic communities and ecosystems.

Monoaromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous air pollutants from industry, with multiple adverse effects on respiratory system. However, the underlying mechanisms of their mixture to induce asthma is still unclear. Here, we examined mixture of 8 MAHs, mixture of 16 PAHs and a total mixture (MIX) on human bronchial epithelial (16-HBE) cells. Exposure to MIX resulted in increased expressions of asthma alarm cytokines (TSLP, IL-25 and IL-33), indicating potential asthma risk. Exposure to MIX led to significant upregulation of transcriptional level of oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers through aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation, including SOD-2, NQO-1, IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-8 with 3.1, 19.9, 3.5, 23.4, 18.7, 28.1-fold change, indicated asthma related epithelial cell lesions. A total of 25, 49 and 59 differential metabolites were identified in cells response to MAH, PAH and MIX exposure, respectively, and enrichment analysis demonstrated MIX exposure disturbing alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, glutathione metabolism, methionine metabolism and sphingolipid metabolism, involved in antioxidative defense and inflammation response. Combined exposure of MAHs and PAHs may result in increased toxic risks, and provide evidence to asthma onset and deterioration.

The toxicity of Polystyrene (PS) may be higher through co-exposure with other pollutants. Human can simultaneously face the challenges from the various pollutants. Nevertheless, little research has been done on the combined effects of PS and 2,6-dichloro-p-benzoquinone (DCBQ) disinfection byproduct. Considering the potential risk of PS and DCBQ, we aimed to illustrate the effects of PS in combination with DCBQ on the immune responses of mice. We found that cotreatment of DCBQ and PS may inhibit the activity of spleen CD4+ T cells and interfere with the normal function of the immune system. Further research found that DCBQ + PS resulted in increasing amount of the inflammatory cells in intestine via histopathological evaluation. The reason might be that DCBQ + PS has changed the composition of intestinal flora, abnormally activated intestinal macrophage, and inhibited the expression of immune-related genes, thus leading to intestinal immune disorders and triggering intestinal inflammation. In summary, PS may alter the cooperation mechanism of gut microbiota and immune system through co-exposure with DCBQ. Current results suggested that more attention should be paid to the combined toxic effects of environmental contaminants.

Faba bean water extract (FBW) and vitamin K3 (VK3) have been demonstrated to improve the muscle textural quality of fish. To better apply these two feed additives in commercial aquaculture setting, four experimental diets (control, commercial feed group; 15% FBW, 15% faba bean water extract group; 2.5% VK3, 2.5% vitamin K3 group; combined group, 15% faba bean water extract + 2.5% vitamin K3 group) were formulated to explore their combined effects of FBW and VK3 on the growth, health status, and muscle textural quality of grass carp. The growth performance, textural quality, intestinal characteristics, and oxidative and immune responses were analyzed on days 40, 80 and 120. The results showed that supplementation with higher doses of FBW and VK3 have no influence on growth-related parameters and immune parameters of grass carp. Notably, compared with the control, fish in the combined group had the highest textural qualities (hardness, chewiness and adhesiveness), followed by those in 15% FBW and 2.5% VK3 groups (P < 0.05). Also, FBW and VK3, to some extent, may lower antioxidative ability of grass carp, as illustrated by lower levels of GSH and CAT in 15% FBW, 2.5% VK3, and combined groups on day 120 (P < 0.05). In addition, enhanced lipase activity was observed in the 15% FBW group. Taken together, the combined supplementation of FBW and VK3 was demonstrated to be a more advanced option than their individual supplementation in a commercial setting owing to the resulting combined effects on both the textural quality and health status of grass carp.

The effects of low-dose radiation that are observed in plant populations in radioactively contaminated areas are variable. One of the reasons is the influence of fluctuating weather conditions and the interaction of radiation with weather factors. This article summarizes results of 12-year research on the viability and radioresistance of greater plantain (Plantago major L.) seed progeny growing in the East Ural Radioactive Trace (EURT) zone and in control (nonradioactive) areas, with consideration of weather conditions' variability. The EURT was formed by the Kyshtym accident, which occurred in 1957 at the Mayak Production Association. Absorbed dose rates of P. major parental plants in the pollution gradient were 14.5-165.9 µGy h-1, which correspond to a low-dose range. Seed progeny quality was evaluated as seed weight, the survival rate, and root length of 21-day seedlings. Interannual variability in the studied parameters was high, and their ranges overlapped between EURT groups of seeds and control groups in most cases. The number of significant correlations between the parameters of seed quality and weather conditions was higher in EURT groups than in control populations. In the control groups of seeds, 88.9% of correlations were negative, whereas in the EURT groups, 78.5% were positive.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a major determinant of perinatal morbidity and mortality, with adverse long-term neurocognitive effects in childhood and adulthood. Prenatal exposure to environmental pollutants has been reported to be associated with FGR. Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are extensively used insecticides worldwide and are suggested to have embryonic and developmental neurotoxicity. However, the effects of NEOs exposure on FGR is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to quantify the single and combined associations of maternal exposure to NEOs and FGR. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study based on the Guangxi Zhuang Birth Cohort, China. A total of 387 with FGR cases and 1096 without- FGR controls were included between 2015 and 2018. Ten NEOs were measured by UPLC-MS from the maternal blood samples were pre-collected in the first trimester. After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariable logistic regressions, weighted quantile sum regression and quantile g-computation were performed for individual and NEOs mixtures. RESULTS: In the individual exposure models, each 1-standard deviation increment of the natural-log in dinotefuran and acetamiprid concentrations were significantly associated with odds ratios of 1.93 (95% CI: 1.69, 2.20) and 1.31 (95% CI: 1.07, 1.59) higher odds of FGR, respectively. However, the FGR risk was negatively associated with thiacloprid, sulfoxaflor, and nitenpyram (OR = 0.23, 95%CI: 0.15, 0.34; OR = 0.48, 95%CI: 0.41, 0.56; OR = 0.86, 95%CI: 0.80, 0.93; respectively). Similar findings were found in the combined exposure analysis. Dinotefuran was the most strongly attributable to increase FGR, while sulfoxaflor and thiacloprid contributed the highest negative weighted on FGR. Furthermore, each quintile increase in all ten NEOs exposures was associated with FGR (OR = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.54). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that maternal single and combined exposures to NEOs were associated with varying FGR risks. They contribute to the mounting evidence on serum NEOs exposure impact on FGR. However, a replication of these associations in other populations is warranted.

Personal care products have various organic ultraviolet filters (UV filters) in their composition to increase protection against ultraviolet radiation. Some of these products also contain insect repellents in their formulations. Consequently, these compounds reach freshwater ecosystems, exposing aquatic organisms to a cocktail of anthropogenic contaminants. In this study, the joint effects of two most frequently detected UV filters (Benzophenone - 3 (BP3) and Enzacamene (4-MBC)) and joint effects of BP3 combined with an insect repellent (N, N diethyl-3-methylbenzamide - DEET) were evaluated using life-history traits of the aquatic midge Chironomus riparius such as emergence rate, time to emergence and imagoes body weight. The results showed synergistic effects between BP3 and 4-MBC for C. riparius emergence rate. Regarding the effects of BP3 and DEET mixture, our analysis suggests synergism in the case of males but antagonism in the case of females' time to emergence. Our results imply that the effects of UV filters present in sediments within chemical mixtures are complex and that the evaluation of effects using different life-history traits can yield different patterns of responses. This study demonstrates the importance of assessing the combined effects of pollutants used/found concomitantly in aquatic systems for a more accurate risk assessment, as individual chemical testing can underestimate the toxicity of organic UV filters.
