RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate planning target volume (PTV) margin in online adaptive radiation therapy (oART) for gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas. Four consecutive patients with gastric MALT lymphoma who received oART (30 Gy in 15 fractions) on the oART system were included in this study. One hundred and twenty cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans acquired pre- and post-treatment of 60 fractions for all patients were used to evaluate intra- and interfractional motions. Patients were instructed on breath-holding at exhalation during image acquisition. To assess the intrafraction gastric motion, different PTVs were created by isotropically extending the CTV contoured on a pre-CBCT image (CTVpre) at1 mm intervals. Intrafraction motion was defined as the amount of expansion covering the contoured CTV on post-CBCT images (CTVpost). Interfractional motion was defined as the amount of reference CTV expansion that could cover each CTVpre, as well as the evaluation of the intrafractional motion. PTV margins were estimated from the cumulative proportion of fraction covering the intra- and interfractional motions. The extent of expansion covering the CTVs in 90% of fractions was adopted as the PTV margin. The PTV margin for intrafractional gastric motion using the oART system with breath-holding was 14 mm. In contrast, the PTV margin for interfractional gastric organ motion without the oART system was 25 mm. These results indicated that the oART system can reduce the PTV margin by >10 mm. Our results could be valuable data for oART cases.

Variations in the root canal anatomy of a maxillary first molar are often challenging to diagnose and treat; thus, clinicians must have a thorough knowledge of the same. This case report highlights the successful nonsurgical endodontic management of a maxillary first molar with an unusual morphology of three roots and six root canals. A total of six root canals (mesiobuccal [MB] 1, MB2, MB3, distobuccal [DB] 1, DB2, and palatal) were detected after initiating root canal therapy and access cavity preparation. Conventional root canal treatment was completed, and postoperative cone-beam computed tomography scanning was done to verify the total number of canals and ensure the adequacy of root canal fillings. Managing such cases with rare variations in the root canal systems could be arduous and thus, clinicians should be well-versed in the methods to identify and manage such complexities to facilitate the successful outcomes of endodontic treatment.

Objective: To determine the effect of the impacted position of the maxillary canine on the root resorption of the adjacent incisor using Cone-beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging. Methods: This was an analytic quantitative study. The research sample determined CBCT images of treatment patients at the Orthodontic Specialist Policlinic in Dental Hospital of Airlangga University over a three-year period and secondary data taken from Pramita Laboratory. CBCT photos that met the inclusion criteria, including mesially impacted canine or close to central or lateral incisors with completely formed anatomy were then analyzed. Multiple linear regression was used to determine x-axis, y-axis, z-axis position of the impacted canine on the severity of root resorption of the adjacent incisor, and the effect of impacted canines on all axes simultaneously on the severity of root resorption of the adjacent incisors. Results: The position of the impacted canine in the x-axis and z-axis planes had a significant influence on the root resorption of the adjacent incisor. Meanwhile, impacted canine from the y-axis plane showed non-significant influence on the root resorption. Conclusion: The position of the impacted canine when viewed in all planes of the tooth axis has a significant effect on the severity of root resorption of the adjacent incisor.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess whether awake bruxism and masticatory muscle activity could be related to external root resorption (ERR) in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients, with requests for a cone-beam, computed tomography, were divided into two groups: ERR (patients with ERR in the second molar, n = 30), and control group (n = 30). Awake bruxism was assessed through the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC) and an ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to assess the masseter and anterior temporal muscle function. Normality and homogeneity of variances were demonstrated. Descriptive analysis was performed, using the T-test and Chi-square test to compare the characteristics of the groups. A multiple regression model was performed. RESULTS: The ERR group presented more non-functional oral activities related to awake bruxism than the control group, according to OBC (p = 0.027) and EMA (p = 0.035). In addition, the ERR group had higher EMG activity than the control group in rest and isotonic protocols (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Awake bruxism and greater masticatory muscle activity seem to be related to the presence of ERR in second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results of the present study can reinforce the theory that triggering ERR in the second molars adjacent to impacted mandibular third molars may be related to mechanical forces coming from the masticatory function.

While clinical dentistry has seamlessly integrated the digital revolution, there is a gap in the technological capabilities of forensic dentistry.The study aimed to compare the superimposition accuracy of two different three-dimensional record formats, namely the intraoral scanner and cone beam computer tomography, in the context of forensic identification.The sample consisted of randomly selected adults (n=10) of both sexes aged between 20 and 50 years. Following the acquisition of data using the Medit i700 wireless scanner and the iCAT Tomograph with InVivo software, the records were analysed and compared through superimposition using Medit Scan Clinic software to assess the technical precision of anatomical identification details.The results obtained through the superimposition of dental and bone records following intra- and inter-observer analysis enabled an accurate comparison and identification of an individual. This method can differentiate between positive and negative matches, achieving exclusion results and offering a potential solution to overcoming the absence of a standardisation procedure in human identification.

AIM: Gingival phenotype (GP) is regarded as a valuable indicator for forecasting the probability of attaining favourable aesthetic and functional results with orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy and reproducibility of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for assessing gingival thickness (GT) in both arches compared to the transgingival probing method. The secondary objective was to determine the optimal cut-off values for GT using CBCT. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted where GP was determined based on the probe transparency method (TRAN). The GT measurements were obtained by both methods at 2mm from the free gingival margin (FGM) for all teeth anterior to the first molar. The data was statistically analysed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Bland-Altman plots, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The statistical significance level was set at a P-value<0.05. RESULTS: The study included 60 subjects (1200 teeth). The mean GT in both the maxillary (1.14±0.17mm) and mandibular (0.94±0.15mm) arches was significantly greater (P<0.05) for the transgingival probing method than for the CBCT method. As shown in the Bland-Altman plot, the bias between the two methods was greater in the maxillary jaw (0.060; 95% CI: 0.044 to 0.076) and in individuals with a thick GP (0.096; 95% CI: 0.082 to 0.109). The optimal values for GT measurements were 1.15mm for the maxillary jaw, 1.02mm for the mandibular jaw, 1.02mm for males, and 1.09mm for females. CONCLUSIONS: CBCT exhibited notable precision in diagnosing GT, while demonstrating minimal disparities compared to the conventional transgingival probing technique, particularly evident in thin GPs, and in the mandibular dental arch. The constraints associated with the utilization of CBCT were observed in the maxillary arch and in cases with thick GP.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the prevalence of single-root with a single root canal and four-root configurations in the maxillary first and second molars, and analyze how geographic region, ethnicity, sex, and age impact these outcomes. METHODS: Researchers from 44 nations examined 26,400 maxillary molars using cone-beam computed tomography scans to gather data on the proportions of single roots with single canals and four-root configurations. All observers underwent prior calibration regarding the step-by-step assessment protocol and anatomical concepts to ensure consistent evaluations across all assessed locations. Tests were conducted to evaluate the intra- and inter-observer reliability. Demographic data including ethnicity, gender, and age were collected for each participant. The potential impact of imaging voxel size and field-of-view on bias was also assessed. The primary results were depicted as odds ratios and untransformed proportion forest plots with 95% confidence intervals. Additionally, a meta-analysis was performed to compare various subgroups and identify sources of variation among them. Statistical significance was set at 5%. RESULTS: The prevalence of single-rooted with a single canal and four-rooted configurations in the maxillary first molar was 0.16% and 0.28%, respectively, while in the maxillary second molar, it was 2.56% and 0.83%. Males tended to exhibit lower percentages of single roots with a single canal (P < 0.05) and higher percentages of four-rooted configurations (P > 0.05) in the second molar, whereas the African subgroup displayed lower proportions for both configurations. Additionally, in both teeth, single roots with a single canal were more prevalent among older patients. Voxel size and field-of-view did not significantly influence the results (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The proportions of single-rooted with a single canal and four-rooted configurations were low, and demographic factors such as geographic region, ethnicity, sex, and age may have influenced the outcomes for the maxillary second molar.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a modified deep learning (DL) model based on nnU-net for classifying and segmenting five-class jaw lesions using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: A total of 368 CBCT scans (37 168 slices) were used to train a multi-class segmentation model. The data underwent manual annotation by two oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) to serve as ground truth. Sensitivity, specificity, precision, F1-score, and accuracy were used to evaluate the classification ability of the model and doctors, with or without artificial intelligence assistance. The dice similarity coefficient (DSC), average symmetric surface distance (ASSD) and segmentation time were used to evaluate the segmentation effect of the model. RESULTS: The model achieved the dual task of classifying and segmenting jaw lesions in CBCT. For classification, the sensitivity, specificity, precision, and accuracy of the model were 0.871, 0.974, 0.874 and 0.891, respectively, surpassing oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMFRs) and OMSs, approaching the specialist. With the model's assistance, the classification performance of OMFRs and OMSs improved, particularly for odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and ameloblastoma (AM), with F1-score improvements ranging from 6.2% to 12.7%. For segmentation, the DSC was 87.2% and the ASSD was 1.359 mm. The model's average segmentation time was 40 ± 9.9 s, contrasting with 25 ± 7.2 min for OMSs. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed DL model accurately and efficiently classified and segmented five classes of jaw lesions using CBCT. In addition, it could assist doctors in improving classification accuracy and segmentation efficiency, particularly in distinguishing confusing lesions (e.g., AM and OKC).

(1) Background: Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) is a common condition characterized by an abnormal dentinal apposition within the canal wall, which often rises as a consequence of dental trauma. In recent years, "guided endodontics" has offered a reliable and safer procedure for endodontic access in case of PCO. The present case report aims to introduce a new endodontic guided system with a sleeveless, open-frame titanium guide designed to reduce costs compared to traditional templates. (2) Methods: The patient is a 19-year-old female who was referred to a private clinic to treat a calcified and symptomatic tooth (3.3) with apical periodontitis. Following the first unsuccessful treatment attempt using the operating microscope, a three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination and an optical impression were performed in agreement with the patient. The Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) and Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files were sent to the lab for the template packaging, and the patient was scheduled for a second appointment. The endodontic guide was accurately positioned, and shaping and filling were concluded with success. The canal was sealed with the single-cone technique and bioceramic sealer. (3) Results: The patient reported no significant post-operative symptoms. Notably, the treatment achieved total symptom resolution, as evidenced by radiographic assessments conducted 3 and 24 months post-treatment, confirming the procedure's success. (4) Conclusions: This innovative sleeveless, open-frame static titanium guide presents a promising advancement in guided endodontics for PCO treatment. The advantages include preserving healthy dental tissue, reduced chairside operating time, and cost savings compared to conventional templates. This approach holds promise for enhancing the quality and efficiency of endodontic procedures in cases of PCO. While the static guide holds promise, larger prospective studies are necessary to validate its efficacy, safety, and broader applicability in routine endodontic procedures.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphology of maxillary first premolar mesial root concavity and to analyse its relation to periodontal bone loss (BL) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic radiographs. METHODS: The mesial root concavity of maxillary premolar teeth was analysed via CBCT. The sex and age of the patients, starting position and depth of the root concavity, apicocoronal length of the concavity on the crown or root starting from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ), total apicocoronal length of the concavity, amount of bone loss both in CBCT images and panoramic radiographs, location of the furcation, length of the buccal and palatinal roots, and buccopalatinal cervical root width were measured. RESULTS: A total of 610 patients' CBCT images were examined, and 100 were included in the study. The total number of upper premolar teeth was 200. The patients were aged between 18 and 65 years, with a mean age of 45.21 ± 13.13 years. All the teeth in the study presented mesial root concavity (100%, n = 200). The starting point of concavity was mostly on the cervical third of the root (58.5%). The mean depth and buccolingual length measurements were 0.96 mm and 4.32 mm, respectively. Depth was significantly related to the amount of alveolar bone loss (F = 5.834, p = 0.001). The highest average concavity depth was 1.29 mm in the group with 50% bone loss. The data indicated a significant relationship between the location of the furcation and bone loss (X2 = 25.215, p = 0.003). Bone loss exceeded 50% in 100% of patients in whom the furcation was in the cervical third and in only 9.5% of patients in whom the furcation was in the apical third (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of this study, the depth of the mesial root concavity and the coronal position of the furcation may increase the amount of alveolar bone loss. Clinicians should be aware of these anatomical factors to ensure accurate treatment planning and successful patient management.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the impact of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven noise reduction algorithms on metal artifacts and image quality parameters in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of the oral cavity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 70 patients, 61 of whom were analyzed after excluding those with severe motion artifacts. CBCT scans, performed using a Hyperion X9 PRO 13 × 10 CBCT machine, included images with dental implants, amalgam fillings, orthodontic appliances, root canal fillings, and crowns. Images were processed with the ClariCT.AI deep learning model (DLM) for noise reduction. Objective image quality was assessed using metrics such as the differentiation between voxel values (ΔVVs), the artifact index (AIx), and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Subjective assessments were performed by two experienced readers, who rated overall image quality and artifact intensity on predefined scales. RESULTS: Compared with native images, DLM reconstructions significantly reduced the AIx and increased the CNR (p < 0.001), indicating improved image clarity and artifact reduction. Subjective assessments also favored DLM images, with higher ratings for overall image quality and lower artifact intensity (p < 0.001). However, the ΔVV values were similar between the native and DLM images, indicating that while the DLM reduced noise, it maintained the overall density distribution. Orthodontic appliances produced the most pronounced artifacts, while implants generated the least. CONCLUSIONS: AI-based noise reduction using ClariCT.AI significantly enhances CBCT image quality by reducing noise and metal artifacts, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning. Further research with larger, multicenter cohorts is recommended to validate these findings.

PURPOSE: Imaging of the delicate inner ear morphology has become more and more precise owing to the rapid progress in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, in clinical practice, the interpretation of imaging findings is hampered by a limited knowledge of anatomical details which are frequently obscured by artifacts. Corresponding review articles are as rare in journals as they are in reference books. This shortness prompted us to perform a direct comparison of imaging with anatomical whole-mount sections as a reference. It was the intention of this paper to compare the microscopic anatomy of a human inner ear as shown on anatomical whole-mount sections with high-resolution MRI and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Both are available in clinical routine and depict the structures with maximum spatial resolution. It was also a goal of this work to clarify if structures that were observed on MRI in a regular manner correlate with factual inner ear anatomy or correspond with artifacts typical for imaging. METHODS: A fresh human anatomical specimen was examined on a clinical 3-Tesla MRI scanner using a dedicated surface coil. The same specimen was then studied with CBCT. In each imaging modality, high-resolution 3D data sets which enabled multiplanar reformatting were created. In the second step, anatomical whole-mount sections of the specimen were cut and stained. This process enabled a direct comparison of imaging with anatomical conditions. RESULTS: Clinical MRI was able to depict the inner ear with remarkable anatomical precision. Strongly T2-weighted imaging protocols are exquisitely capable of showing the fluid-filled components of the inner ear. The macular organs, ampullar crests and cochlear aqueduct were clearly visible. Truncation artifacts are prone to be confused with the delicate membrane separating the endolymphatic from the perilymphatic compartment. However, it was not possible to directly depict this borderline. CONCLUSIONS: With the maximum resolution of magnetic resonance tomography, commonly used in everyday clinical practice, even the smallest details of the inner ear structures can be reliably displayed. However, it is important to distinguish between truncation artifacts and true anatomical structures. Therefore, this study can be useful as a reference for image analysis.

A high prevalence of post-treatment apical periodontitis associated to variables such as endodontic treatment quality and missed canals has been reported. AIM: The aim of this study was to evalúate the quality of endodontic treatment and the frequency of missed canals associated with teeth with apicalperiodontitis (AP) through CBCTin a Colombian sub-population. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study assessing 318 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of endodontically treated teeth from Colombian individuals. The scans were taken using J Morita X550 (J Morita Corporation, Osaka, Japan), with voxel size 0.125 to 0.20 mm. All endodontically treated teeth were assessed for quality of treatment, presence of missed canals and AP. Allsamples were analyzed bytwo endodontics specialists and an radiology specialist. Chi-square or Fisher 's test and odds ratio were calculated to identify the association and risk relationship between the presence of AP and the study variables. RESULTS: Missed canals were found in 18.61% (86/462), and 95.3% were associated with AP. The frequency of AP was 62.34% (288/462) for all the evaluated teeth. AP was found in 27.43 % (79/288) of the teeth with adequate endodontic treatment, in contrast to 72.57% (209/288) of the teeth with inadequate treatment (P<0.01). The frequency of missed canals was highest in maxillary molars, with 55.23% (58/105), with 96.55% presenting AP. The second mesiobuccal canal wasthe most frequently missed canal, 88.52%o(54/61), with AP in 90.74% (49/54) of the cases. CONCLUSIÓN: There was a high frequency of teeth with missed canals and PA. More than half of the teeth with missed canals were maxillary molars, with MB2 being the most common canal, commonly presenting apical periodontitis.


Uma alta prevalência de periodontite apical pós-tratamento associada a variáveis como qualidade do tratamento endodôntico e fracasso do tratamento é relatada na literatura. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade do tratamento endodôntico e a frequência e fracasso do tratamento associados a dentes com periodontite apical (PA) por meio de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC) em uma subpopulação colombiana. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Este foi um estudo transversal que avaliou 318 tomografias computadorizadas de dentes tratados endodonticamente de indivíduos colombianos. Os exames foram realizados utilizando o tomógrafo J Morita X550, com tamanho de voxel de 0,125 a 0,20 mm. Todos os dentes tratados endodonticamente foram avaliados quanto à qualidade do tratamento, presença de canais não localizados e AP. Todas as amostras foram avaliadas por dois especialistas em endodontia e um especialista em radiologia. Foram calculados o teste qui-quadrado ou de Fisher e a razão de chances para identificar associação e relação de risco entre a presença de PA e as variáveis do estudo. RESULTADOS: Foram encontrados canais não localizados em 18,61% (86/462) e 95,3% estavam associados à PA. A frequência de AP foi de 62,34% (288/462) para todos os dentes avaliados. AP foi encontrada em 27,43% (79/288) dos dentes com tratamento endodôntico adequado, em contraste com 72,57% (209/288) dos dentes com tratamento inadequado (P<0,01). A frequência de canais não localizados foi maior nos molares superiores, com 55,23% (58/105), sendo que 96,55% apresentavam PA. O canal mésio-palatino (MB2) apresentou maior frequência de canal não localizado (88,52% - 54/61), com PA em 90,74% (49/54) dos casos. CONCLUSÃO: Houve alta frequência de dentes com canais não localizados e com PA. Mais da metade dos dentes com canais não localizados eram molares superiores, sendo o MB2 é o canal com a maior frequência, comumente apresentando periodontite apical.

BACKGROUND: Over time, numerous surgical procedures and biomaterials have been proposed for the reconstruction of post-extraction bone defects, each with their advantages and disadvantages. The main objective of this study was to evaluate dimensional changes in the alveolar bone 3 months after tooth extraction, before implant planning, comparing alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) with spontaneous healing. METHODS: A total of 84 patients with non-restorable molars were included in the study. Forty-two patients received ARP with advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) and spontaneous healing was evaluated in these patients. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis performed before and after surgical intervention was used to determine the changes in vertical and horizontal bone dimensions produced after tooth extraction. RESULTS: CBCT measurements showed reduction in both vertical and horizontal alveolar bone size in both groups. For the study group, the alveolar parameters (height, width) were higher compared to the control group. The percentage variations between dimensional differences from the two groups were 38.58% for height, and for width were 36.88% at 0 mm, 35.56% at 3 mm, 36.61% at 5 mm, and 38.73% at 7 mm. The differences were statistically significant (p ˂ 0.0005). CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained after ARP with A-PRF showed a reduced loss of bone volume compared to spontaneous healing.

This study assessed AI-processed low-dose cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images for single-tooth diagnosis. Human-equivalent phantoms were used to evaluate CBCT image quality with a focus on the right mandibular first molar. Two CBCT machines were used for evaluation. The first CBCT machine was used for the experimental group, in which images were acquired using four protocols and enhanced with AI processing to improve quality. The other machine was used for the control group, where images were taken in one protocol without AI processing. The dose-area product (DAP) was measured for each protocol. Subjective clinical image quality was assessed twice by five dentists, with a 2-month interval in between, using 11 parameters and a six-point rating scale. Agreement and statistical significance were assessed with Fleiss' kappa coefficient and intra-class correlation coefficient. The AI-processed protocols exhibited lower DAP/field of view values than non-processed protocols, while demonstrating subjective clinical evaluation results comparable to those of non-processed protocols. The Fleiss' kappa coefficient value revealed statistical significance and substantial agreement. The intra-class correlation coefficient showed statistical significance and almost perfect agreement. These findings highlight the importance of minimizing radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic quality as the usage of CBCT increases in single-tooth diagnosis.

(1) Background: This study aimed to integrate an augmented reality (AR) image-guided surgery (IGS) system, based on preoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, into clinical practice. (2) Methods: In preclinical and clinical surgical setups, an AR-guided visualization system based on Microsoft's HoloLens 2 was assessed for complex lower third molar (LTM) extractions. In this study, the system's potential intraoperative feasibility and usability is described first. Preparation and operating times for each procedure were measured, as well as the system's usability, using the System Usability Scale (SUS). (3) Results: A total of six LTMs (n = 6) were analyzed, two extracted from human cadaver head specimens (n = 2) and four from clinical patients (n = 4). The average preparation time was 166 ± 44 s, while the operation time averaged 21 ± 5.9 min. The overall mean SUS score was 79.1 ± 9.3. When analyzed separately, the usability score categorized the AR-guidance system as "good" in clinical patients and "best imaginable" in human cadaver head procedures. (4) Conclusions: This translational study analyzed the first successful and functionally stable application of the HoloLens technology for complex LTM extraction in clinical patients. Further research is needed to refine the technology's integration into clinical practice to improve patient outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of the components of the temporomandibular joint in individuals with unilateral, bilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP), and in healthy individuals, utilizing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHOD AND MATERIAL: The present study employed a cross-sectional design and recruited participants aged 18 to 30 years. The participants were categorized into three groups: a control group consisting of 36 individuals without any cleft, a group of 35 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), and a group of 15 patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP). The analysis of CBCT images encompassed the examination of condylar height and angulation, glenoid fossa height and width, articular eminence inclination, as well as joint spaces across all three groups. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were employed to ascertain the significant differences among the three groups. RESULTS: The UCLP and BCLP groups demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in condylar height and articular eminence inclination in comparison to the control group. Furthermore, a significant difference in the width of the glenoid fossa was seen between the group with clefts and the control group. CONCLUSION: The CBCT images showed significant differences in several aspects of the temporomandibular joint, including condylar height, articular eminence inclination, and glenoid fossa width, in individuals with cleft palate. These abnormalities can contribute to the development of temporomandibular joint diseases. Therefore, recognizing these distinctions can help prevent further deterioration and progression of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in CLP patients.

PURPOSE: To assess the presence of mandibular canal bifurcation (BMC) and classify these variations by correlating findings with sex, age and facial skeletal pattern, measurements were made, including height, width, and distance from bifurcation to anatomical cortical bones. METHODS: BMC was identified in cone beam CT exams of 301 patients and classified according to its origin, location, direction, configuration and ending. The height and width of the MC before and after the bifurcation; height and width of the BMC; and distance from BMC to alveolar (C1), buccal (C2), lingual (C3) and basal (C4) bone cortices were measured. All data were correlated with sex, age, and facial skeletal pattern (class I, II, III). The significance level was 5%. RESULTS: 67 BMC (22.26%) were identified in 55 patients (18.28%). Bifurcations were more prevalent in females (p = 0.57), aged 18-39 years (p = 0.40), class I (p = 0.77). Single bifurcations, located in the posterior region of the mandible, originating in the MC, with a superior direction and ending in the retromolar foramen were more prevalent (p > 0.05). Mean cortical measurements were higher in male individuals, with significant differences only at C1 (p = 0.03). The mean height and width of BMC were 2.24 (± 0.62) and 1.75 (± 0.45) mm. There was no association between BMC classification and the variables studied (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Approximately 1/5 of the population studied had BMC. There were no associations of BMC presence or characteristics with sex, age, and facial skeletal pattern. The distance from bifurcation to alveolar (superior) cortical bone is greater in male individuals.

Investigation of the biological sex of human remains is a crucial aspect of physical anthropology. However, due to varying states of skeletal preservation, multiple approaches and structures of interest need to be explored. This research aims to investigate the potential use of distances between bifrontal breadth (FMB), infraorbital foramina distance (IOD), nasal breadth (NLB), inter-canine width (ICD), and distance between mental foramina (MFD) for combined sex prediction through traditional statistical methods and through open-access machine-learning tools. Ethical approval was obtained from the ethics committee, and out of 100 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, 54 individuals were selected with all the points visible. Ten extra exams were chosen to test the predictors developed from the learning sample. Descriptive analysis of measurements, standard deviation, and standard error were obtained. T-student and Mann-Whitney tests were utilized to assess the sex differences within the variables. A logistic regression equation was developed and tested for the investigation of the biological sex as well as decision trees, random forest, and artificial neural networks machine-learning models. The results indicate a strong correlation between the measurements and the sex of individuals. When combined, the measurements were able to predict sex using a regression formula or machine learning based models which can be exported and added to software or webpages. Considering the methods, the estimations showed an accuracy rate superior to 80% for males and 82% for females. All skulls in the test sample were accurately predicted by both statistical and machine-learning models. This exploratory study successfully established a correlation between facial measurements and the sex of individuals, validating the prediction potential of machine learning, augmenting the investigative tools available to experts with a high differentiation potential.

Background: Implant success and the state of the surrounding bone require multiple measures, especially in humans, and this study aimed to identify the development of the state of the latter by means of radiographic examination performed during the period of osseointegration as well as investigate the changes in bone density that occur after implant installation and 2 months after functional loading. Implant success rates are affected by bone density at the implant site. Therefore, understanding changes in bone density after dental implant placement is essential, as it correlates with subsequent implant success. Materials and methods: Digital radiographs of 28 implants were taken and evaluated at four intervals: preoperatively, 1 and 3 months postoperatively, and 2 months following placement of the permanent prosthesis. Gray values were measured in different areas around the implants through analyzing X-ray images and measuring bone density around the implants using EzDent - 2D software. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in bone density around implants in three regions: apex, neck, and body, as well as to record average density values during the observation period by measuring digital image gray levels (the gray values of the digital radiographs). This was conducted to determine local bone densities in dental implant recipient sites and to study changes in local bone densities at different intervals, preoperatively and postoperatively and after placement of the prosthesis. Results: A decrease was observed in gray values proportional to reference values 1-month after implant insertion, but these increased at 3 months after insertion and continued to rise 2 months after placement of the prosthesis in the apical, body, and neck regions of the implant. Conclusion: Sensor-tuned radiography can be used as an effective method to support clinical follow-ups as well as measure changes in bone densities around implants in critical cases.
