RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Gender equity in urological meetings is pivotal for fostering diversity and inclusivity in the field. This study aims to evaluate the representation of Spanish urologist and regional disparities, and to assess its alignment with the demographic composition of the urological community. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All urology meetings organized by the AEU between January 2012 and December 2022 were reviewed, including meeting information and details of the faculty. Additionally, we analysed geographic distribution of speakers across 17 different regions. Gender demographics were obtained disaggregating data by sex and year from the Organización Médica Colegial de España (OMC) and from those urologists affiliated to the AEU. RESULTS: Analysing 52 AEU congresses held from 2012 to 2022, encompassing 3,407 speakers, the study found that 95.25% of speakers were from Spain and 89.6% were male speakers. Over the years, there was a positive trend in female speaker representation, increasing by 1.1% annually, slightly lagging the 1.8% annual rise in the number of female urologists in Spain. In specific subfields like functional, transplantation, and oncology sessions, the study revealed a higher representation of women, indicating focused efforts in these areas. Geographically, Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia exhibited the highest representation. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was a positive trend towards an increased participation of female urologists in Spanish urological meetings, it fails to accurately reflect the proportional increase in the number of women entering the urology profession in recent years. This study underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to ensure diverse and balanced representation in urological forum.

(AU)

Introduction and objectives: Randomized trials are often presented at medical conferences and published simultaneously or later. Predictors of simultaneous publication and its consequences are undetermined. Our aim was to characterize the practice of simultaneous publication, identify its predictors, and evaluate its impact. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included randomized trials presented at late-breaking science sessions of major cardiovascular conferences from 2015 to 2021. The association of trial characteristics with the timing of publication was analyzed. The impact of simultaneous vs nonsimultaneous publication was investigated on the number of 1-year citations and 1-month mentions, and the total citations and mentions at the longest observation follow-up. Results: Of 478 trials included in the analysis, 48.7% were published simultaneously. Simultaneous publications were more likely to be presented in the main conference room (OR, 6.09; 95%CI, 1.34-36.92; P=.029) and were characterized by a shorter review time (OR, 0.95; 95%CI, 0.91-0.96; P<.001). Simultaneous publications were associated with higher 1-year citations (R2, 43.81; 95%CI, 23.89-63.73; P<.001), 1-month mentions (R2, 132.32; 95%CI, 85.42-179.22; P<.001) and total citations (R2, 222.89; 95%CI, 127.98-317.80; P<.001). Conclusions: Randomized trials presented in the main conference room and with shorter review time were more likely to be published simultaneously. Simultaneous publications were associated with more citations and mentions than nonsimultaneous publications. (AU)

(AU)

Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a change in our health and education system. Training programs also had to adapt and required rapid change. Objectives: to describe an educational experience of virtual/hybrid teaching in clinical research between teachers of the Clinical Service of a university hospital and medical students of a private institution who participated in the ESIN Program (Students in Research). Methodology: the contents and educational strategies included audio or videotaped lectures (asynchronous and self-administered), project-based learning, practical workshops (virtual and group synchronous meetings) by adopting learning models such as the inverted classroom, and individual tutoring between teacher and student. We gathered the data through observation in academic contexts and based on elements of anonymous satisfaction surveys, with prior informed consent of participants. Results: fourteen students participated, six in 2021 and eight in 2022. All were women and medical students (50% fourth year, 35% sixth year, and 15% fifth year). The techniques implemented favored participation and promoted active, project-based learning. They mentioned positive aspects such as the practical academic approach, the availability of the teaching team for any doubts, the time and enthusiasm for teaching, and encouraging participation. The theory videos were a valuable review tool, and team meetings received high praise even if the one-on-one meetings received much attention as help and support before the scientific congresses. In general, they stated that it was an enriching experience that showed that you can achieve what you thought impossible. All of them actively participated in at least one scientific congress, and 50% were co-authors of an academic publication. Conclusion: the students assumed commitments and responsibilities and incorporated competencies and skills in project implementation and dissemination. This educational experience helped to optimize class time for exchange, discussion, and doubts. The resources produced, the activities developed, and the contents addressed are now available at the institutional level. (AU)

Abstract Introduction: only a few articles submitted to the Argentine Congress of Rheumatology (ACOR) are published. Objectives: to analyse the topics of study (TOS) and the publication rate of articles on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) submitted to the ACOR. Materials and methods: every abstract submitted to the ACOR between 2008 and 2017, whose primary research subject was RA, was analyzed and sorted according to TOS. Repeated TOS, defined as at least two similar studies on the same topic, were identified. The publication rate and the number of similar studies according to TOS, participating centers, and patients were determined. Results: out of 346 articles submitted, 51 (14.7%) were published. Fourteen (11.9%) of the 118 studies on repeated TOS were published vs. 37 (16.2%) of the rest of the TOS (p: 0.4). The articles on repeated TOS neither included more patients nor involved a higher number of centers. Thirteen repeated TOS with at least three similar studies, but no published articles were identified. Conclusions: only a few articles on RA were published. One third of the studies submitted to the ACOR are repeated TOS, a fact that does not improve the publication rate.

Background: In 2013, we developed a scale to evaluate the abstracts of the congresses of the Society of Surgeons of Chile (SOCICH). Objective: To determine internal consistency and interobserver reliability of a scale to evaluate conference abstracts. Material and Methods: Reliability study. Twelve surgeons were trained virtually for 8 hours, to apply the scale. Once the training was finished, they were sent a questionnaire to evaluate the contents of the training, and several summaries-cases to be evaluated with the aforementioned scale. Descriptive statistics were applied, then the degree of agreement between observers was estimated for each item of the scale. Subsequently, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was evaluated, using a mixed two-factor model where the effects of the evaluators are random and the items are fixed, using a definition of absolute agreement. In addition, the internal consistency of the items was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha, considering 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: After analyzing the measurements of the 9 items by the 12 observers, it was verified that the ICC was 0.871; with a 95% CI of 0.700; 0.965. The internal consistency value was 0.7 considering the 9 items, it is not recommended to delete any item. Conclusions: The scale has good internal consistency and interobserver reliability. Therefore, it can be considered as reliable instrument to be used in the evaluation of abstracts for congresses.

RESUMO

Introducción: Los trabajos científicos permiten divulgar, compartir y contrastar resultados a terceros.

Introduction: Scientific studies allow the disclosure, sharing and comparison of results with third parties. One of the ways to see the investigative activity of each medical specialty is through the presentations they make at scientific meetings. Aim: To describe the number of presentations of the different surgical specialties or areas in Chile in the main congress held at a national level and to assess whether the behavior was different during the years of the coronavirus pandemic. Material and Method: Bibliometric study of the Chilean Congress of Surgery between 2010 and 2021, evaluating the total number of presentations by surgical area, year of presentation and two categorized periods (2010 to 2019 and 2020 to 2021). Descriptive statistics and association analysis of publication means by area and period are performed. Results: 4,462 presentations were identified, including oral summaries, posters, videos, and residents' sessions, with a mean of 371.8 per year. Coloproctology and Gastroesophageal Surgery contributed a total of 616 (13.8%) and 598 (13.4%) respectively. The mean number of annual presentations prior to the coronavirus pandemic was 414, in contrast to the 160 annual works during it, with a significant decrease in the mean number of presentations per area from 27.6 (± 18.8) to 10.7 (± 8.69) (p < 0.001), without differences in their percentages of participation with respect to the total (p = 0.776). Conclusion: Coloproctology and Gastroesophageal Surgery are the most represented surgical areas. Although the contemporary period of the coronavirus pandemic meant a decrease in presentations, no change was observed in the percentage of participation in any particular area.

(AU)

Analysing the participation of women in the first paediatric congresses, it stands out that many of them belonged to feminist organisations and that, in addition to the pursuit of their cause, they were concerned about children, including educational and legal aspects. We reviewed the minutes and publications related to the first five National Paediatric Congresses (NCPs) (1914-1933), biographies of the participants and publications on feminism in the 1920s and 1930s.Fourteen women participated in the first 5 NPCs, 15% from the health care field, 65% from the field of education and 29% from the field of law. Seven of them belonged to feminist organisations (50%). Two generations of feminists participated in the NPCs. Women from the first generation were actively involved in the National Association of Spanish Women, most of who held positions in administration and worked in the education field. Women from the second generation were organised around the Juventud Universitaria Femenina (University Young Women’s Organization) and worked in law. Their participation in the NPCs had to do with these issues, education and children’s rights. They also promoted other activities to advocate for children at a social level, such as the “school canteens”, “school breakfasts” or the “Children’s Club”, which provided leisure activities for disadvantaged groups. The women whose activity we reviewed, through their feminist perspective of life, not only worked for women’s rights, but also strove to improve the lives of children and to achieve the recognition of their rights.

SUMMARY Very little is known and there is hardly any documentation on what the University Students Federation (FEU by its Spanish initialism) has done in the province and at Matanzas University of Medical Sciences. Because this theme is so important as part of the rescue of the historical memory of the student's organization, it is a challenge to investigate and write it. To provide some historical notes on the beginning and development of the University Student Federation in the current University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas, during a first stage. The authors described some of the main facts related to the work of the members of the University Students Federation of the medical sciences degree courses of Matanzas; they collected information about its student leaders, academic, scientific, cultural events, sports games, among others, from the initial years of higher medical education in the province until the beginning of the 90s.The history of the University Students Federation at Matanzas University of Medical Sciences mirrors the role played by the organization, its members and leaders, rejuvenating it every year, with the new generations joining it in (AU).

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak introduced dramatic changes in all our lives, daily practice, and medical conferences. In search of a tool to spread dermatologic knowledge during confinement, an online medical meeting was held on April 25th to 26th, 2020. In this study, we aimed to assess the characteristics, opinion and satisfaction of the attendees to a free-of-charge online congress. Secondarily, we intended to explain how this meeting was prepared. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Online survey administered to the attendees to an online congress organised via the Telegram® Messenger App. Its organisation and planning, which needed no financial support and was done by volunteer organisers, moderators and speakers, is described step by step. RESULTS: The satisfaction of both speakers and attendees was very high. All participants considered that this format had a great present and future, and most of them rated it as superior to regular face-to-face meetings. Female gender and predominantly private practice favoured this opinion. DISCUSSION: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of most scientific gatherings. This has been seen by some authors as an excellent opportunity, encouraging medical societies and organisations to lead the change to virtual meetings. Although confinement did not allow real contact, our online meeting showed it was possible to ensure interaction and participation between attendees, moderators and speakers. Dermatologists enjoyed some dermatologic science, even despite the extraordinary circumstances disrupting their daily clinical practice. Most of them felt they were participating in something new and compelling that many felt superior to traditional meetings.

ABSTRACT After the creation, in 1953, of the Cuban Society of Endocrinology, the most important scientific activity in this first stage was the holding of annual meetings. As a continuation of these meetings, starting in the 1980s, the Cuban congresses on endocrinology began on a regular basis. The objetive of the investigation was to describe the scientific program of the Annual Meetings of the Cuban Society of Endocrinology. The empirical method of documentary review was used, to search through the minutes of the Cuban Society of Endocrinology in its first stage of creation, as well as the programs of the Annual Meetings of the Society and of the Cuban congresses on endocrinology. Three annual meetings were held: the first one, on October 16, 1955, in Matanzas; the second one, on October 29, 1956, in Pinar del Río; the third one, on April 11, 1959, at Club de Leones in Marianao Municipality, Havana. Among the most addressed topics were diabetes mellitus (40.4 percent of the papers presented), miscellaneous issues (21.4 percent), reproductive health (16.6 percent), and thyroid-related conditions (9.5 percent). The physicians with the highest participation were Julio F. Schutte, Tomas Duran Quevedo, Manuel M. Villaverde, A Ruiz Leiro, and Genaro Suarez. The Cuban Society of Endocrinology, in its second stage of work, developed nine Cuban congresses on endocrinology. Since its creation, the Cuban Society of Endocrinology promoted the holding of scientific meetings called Annual Meetings, in which doctors dedicated to these issues presented the most innovative topics from among their research. As a continuation of these meetings, but in a different social and scientific setting, the regular holding of the Cuban congresses on endocrinology began(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Medical meetings are a tool to help physicians advance and update their medical knowledge. Their quality is the responsibility of colleges and institutions. OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the academic level of four different annual rheumatology meetings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: As a source of information, we used the abstracts published in the supplements of the journal Reumatología Clínica, SE1 Vol. 12, issued in February 2016, SE 1 Vol. 13 issued in February 2017, the electronic application of the 2016 ACR/ARHP of the 2016 American Congress of Rheumatology, devoted to the works presented at the 44th Mexican Congress of Rheumatology (CMR 44), the 45th Mexican Congress of Rheumatology (CMR 45), and the 2016 ACR/ARHP Annual Meeting (ACR 2016), as well as the Web page on the files and abstracts of EULAR 2017, respectively; from each work we compiled information on the major disease being referred to, the type of information provided and the type of report. We should point out that some were combined conditions or designs, from which we selected that which we considered to be the most important. RESULTS: In all, 275, 340, 3275 and 4129 studies were submitted to the XLIV Mexican Congress of Rheumatology, XLV Mexican Congress of Rheumatology, the 2016 ACR/ARHP Annual Meeting and EULAR 2017, respectively. Rheumatoid arthritis was the most common disorder, dealt with in 23%, 26%, 21% and 27% in CMR 44, CMR 45, 2016 ACR and EULAR 2017, respectively, followed by systemic lupus erythematosus; in third place, Mexican congresses reported trials related to systemic vasculitis, whereas spondylitis was the main subject of international congresses. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, clinical topics accounted for 30% in the Mexican congresses and ACR, and nearly 20% in EULAR. Observational studies accounted for 40% in the Mexican congresses vs. 33% in 2016 ACR and 55% in EULAR 2017. Studies on basic science were minimal in the Mexican congress, whereas in 2016 ACR, they represented 21% and 12% in EULAR 2017. CONCLUSION: Rheumatology meetings constitute a tool to obtain adequate evidence-based medical knowledge in this important branch of medicine. For our Mexican Congress, we should encourage collaborative efforts between institutions, which will result in a greater number of controlled studies, clinical trials and basic studies that support the quality of the congress. We wish to emphasize that a greater diffusion of other musculoskeletal diseases is needed, not only autoimmune diseases, since the former represent an important percentage of the daily practice.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Social Media (SoMe) offers excellent opportunities for scientific knowledge dissemination and its use has been extended in urology. However, there is controversy about its use. Live videos shared trough SoMe platforms offer many advantages, but at the same time disadvantages and potential risks including confidentiality, copyright infringement, among others. We aimed to assess the activity of shared videos on SoMe during urological conferences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive study of videos shared on SoMe during European Association of Urology congress was carried out from January 2016 to June 2018. The online tools Symplur (Symplur.com), Twitter, Periscope and YouTube were searched to collect data. Number of videos, transmission time and views were analyzed. Videos were classified as live or pre-recorded and as scientific or non-scientific. SPSS V22.0 was used to process data. RESULTS: We identified 108 videos shared on SoMe, 292.42minutes of transmission, 67732 views. 79 of 108 (73%) were live streaming videos, 78 (72%) of which were considered scientific vs. 30 (28%) non-scientific. An increase was observed trough the years of study (2016-2018) in transmission time (p=.031) number of videos, views (p=.018) and live videos (p=.019) during the annual congress of the European Association of Urology. CONCLUSIONS: Shared videos on SoMe from urological conferences are increasing. These provide advantages for communication, scientific dissemination and expand the scope of conferences. However, there is potential risk of sharing information in real time; that could not be in line with the recommendations for appropriate use of social networks.

Realizaremos un breve resumen de algunos de los principales trabajos científicos presentados: - Antithrombotic Therapy after Acute Coronary Syndrome or PCI in Atrial Fibrillation - The AUGUSTUS Trial - Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Replacement with a Balloon-Expandable Valve in Low-Risk Patients - The PARTNER 3 trial - The Safety and Efficacy of Femoral Access in STEMI: The SAFARI-STEMI Trial - One-Month Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Followed by Clopidogrel Monotherapy versus Standard 12-Month Dual Antiplatelet Therapy With Clopidogrel After Drug-Eluting Stent Implantation. STOP-DAPT 2 Trial - Results of a Large-scale, App-based Study to Identify Atrial Fibrillation Using a Smartwatch: The Apple Heart Study

Summary: As every year, on this occasion the 68th Congress of the American College of Cardiology was held from March 16 to 18 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Set in the city of Mardi Gras and jazz, it once again called on global cardiology to promote knowledge through the presentation of multiple scientific activities. It counted with the presence of more than 16.000 attendees and 2.300 articles were received, many of which will undoubtedly modify the current clinical practice. It is also worth mentioning the presentation of the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Guideline, which highlights the almost total discontinuation of acetylsalicylic acid in primary prevention due to the lack of net benefit. We will make a brief summary of some of the main scientific papers presented: - Antithrombotic Therapy after Acute Coronary Syndrome or PCI in Atrial Fibrillation - The AUGUSTUS Trial - Transcatheter Aortic-Valve Replacement with a Balloon-Expandable Valve in Low-Risk Patients - The PARTNER 3 trial - The Safety and Efficacy of Femoral Access in STEMI: The SAFARI-STEMI Trial - One-Month Dual Antiplatelet Therapy Followed by Clopidogrel Monotherapy versus Standard 12-Month Dual Antiplatelet Therapy With Clopidogrel After Drug-Eluting Stent Implantation.

- Reduction of Cardiovascular Events With Icosapent Ethyl-Intervention Trial - REDUCE-IT. - Vitamin D Supplements and Prevention of Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease - VITAL. - Angiotensin Receptor-Neprilysin Inhibition in Patients Hospitalized With Acute Decompensated Heart Failure: Primary Results of the PIONEER - HF Randomized Controlled Trial. - Pre-hospital Resuscitation Intra-arrest Cooling Effectiveness Survival Study - the PRINCESS Trial.

Summary: The American Heart Association 2018 Congress was held in the city of Chicago, Illinois, from November 10 to 12. There were many news, three new recommendations guidelines were presented (approach to bradycardia and driving disorders, physical activity, and perhaps the most anticipated, the new treatment guide for dyslipidemia). In reviewing the 2013 recommendations, US experts introduced several changes, the most important of which may be to reduce the significance of the 10-year risk calculation to refocus on the LDL goal, under the premise of that the lower, the better. We will make a brief summary of some of the main scientific papers presented during this event that will undoubtedly have an important influence in the near future of global cardiology. - Reduction of Cardiovascular Events With Icosapent Ethyl-Intervention Trial - REDUCE-IT. - Vitamin D Supplements and Prevention of Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease - VITAL. - Angiotensin Receptor-Neprilysin Inhibition in Patients Hospitalized With Acute Decompensated Heart Failure: Primary Results of the PIONEER-HF Randomized Controlled Trial. - Pre-hospital Resuscitation Intra-arrest Cooling Effectiveness Survival Study - the PRINCESS Trial.

Introduction: We have entered a new era in the form of communication and the dissemination of the contents generated in the different meetings and scientific conferences of medicine and surgeryObjective: Analyze the results of the Twitter® broadcast of the 44th National Congress "Advances in Surgery" held in Cartagena - Colombia from August 14 to 17, 2018.Methods: The data obtained by Symplur.com page was compiled in the 44th National Congress "Advances in Surgery" held in Cartagena - Colombia from August 14 to 17, 2018, labeled with the Hashtag #Colombian Surgery. Results: 761 Tweets were generated during the whole time the conference lasted, with 178 active participants on Twitter which represent 10.8% of the total of attendees to the congress, with a ratio of 9 attendees for each parti-cipant on Twitter. As for the average of Tweets per user was 4 and the number of impressions was 1'250,000. As the conference progressed there was more activity in the number of Tweets being the highest point on August 16 with a total of 230 Tweets.Discussion: The use of Twitter as a dissemination tool by Colombian surgeons was similar to that published in other series, however, they are measurements since 2013, in which we have seen how participation and activity increases progressively. The channeling of the contents through a common Hashtag allows the asynchronous interaction of all the participants breaking communication barriers between them

OBJECTIVES: To gain greater understanding of the development of emergency medicine in Spain by analyzing the presentations at conferences of the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES) over the past 30 years (1988-2017). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined the programs of all SEMES conferences and described the characteristics of both presentations and presenters. We also analyzed changes occurring between 1988 and 2017 of some of the characteristics observed. The Web of Science was searched to evaluate the scientific productivity of the most frequent presenters and to calculate h-indexes for those presenters to assesstheir scientific relevance. RESULTS: SEMES did not hold a conference in 1992. The total of 29 conferences included 2182 presentations (112 listing presenters from abroad) given by 1410 presenters (89 from abroad). The presenters' affiliations named 616 centers. The number of presentations and presenters increased linearly during the first period and then leveled off. The number increased exponentially in the final phase. Men gave 79.6% of the presentations; 70.6% of the presenters were physicians, 11.9% were nurses and 4.0% were ambulance staff. Specialists in emergency medicine accounted for 60.8% of the presenters who were physicians. Presenters from the Spanish autonomous community organizing the conference gave 29.8% of the presentations. The contributions of presenters from the local organizing community were nearly always more numerous than the average number of contributions from that community in all 29 conferences overall. Conference contributions from some autonomous communities (Extremadura, Andalusia, and Catalonia) were considerably fewer than would be expected given the scientific productivity of those communities. However, communities (Murcia, Balearic Islands, Asturias, Castile-Leon, Madrid), gave many more presentations than their productivity metrics would predict. Analysis of the 59 most frequent presenters (at 5 conferences or more) showed that 64.4% of them had published at least 20 articles and that 71.2% had an h-index of 5 or higher. The number of women on the program increased significantly between 1988 and 2017. Likewise, geographic diversity increased significantly (presentations from centers outside the local organizing area) as did the participation of hospitalbased emergency medicine specialists. CONCLUSION: SEMES conference programs have attracted significantly more presentations and presenters over the years. We also detected changes in descriptive characteristics. The analysis of those characteristics can help future SEMES conference planners to plan ways to correct aspects such as scarce geographic diversity, low international participation, and few women among presenters.
