Chronic Subjunctivity, or, How Physicians Use Diabetes and Insomnia to Manage Futures in the United States.

Prognostication has become central to medical practice, offering clinicians and patients views of particular futures enabled by biomedical expertise and technologies. Drawing on research on diabetes care and sleep medicine in the United States, in this article we suggest that subjectivity is increasingly modeled on medical understandings of chronic illness. These chronic conceptions of the self and society instill in individuals an anxiety about future health outcomes that, in turn, motivate practices oriented at self-care to avoid negative health outcomes and particular medical futures. At its most extreme, these anxieties of self-care trouble conceptions of self and social belonging, particularly in the future tense, leading patients and clinicians to consider intergenerational and public health based on the threats that individual patients pose for others.

O presente texto objetiva, a partir de uma articulação teórica entre o pensamento frankfurteano e o pós-estruturalista, produzir uma reflexão que contemple o modo como as novas formas de dominação vêm ganhando relevo nas sociedades atuais. Na medida em que ambas as perspectivas lançam suspeitas frente aos anúncios de que estaríamos assistindo a um tempo de maior liberdade, democracia e positivação das singularidades, buscamos realizar uma conjugação destas perspectivas com o propósito de efetivar uma análise crítica dos dispositivos/mecanismos que mascaram o exercício do poder nas formações sociais capitalistas contemporâneas. Para tanto, argumentaremos que a pretensa democracia e liberdade anunciadas pela Sociedade de consumo e pela Indústria Cultural estão a serviço da unidimensionalização do corpo social; do mesmo modo como certos discursos e políticas que militam pela inclusão social e escolar permanecem lidando com a alteridade sob o signo do estereótipo, captura e marginalização, suavizados pelo uso de figuras retóricas.(AU)

The present text objectifies producing a reflection that contemplates the way new forms of domination have been standing out in the current societies based on a theoretical articulation between the Frankfurtean and Post-Structuralist thought. As far as both perspectives raise suspicion towards the announcements that we would be seeing an era of greater freedom, democracy and activation of singularities, we search to achieve a conjugation of these perspectives with the proposal of enabling a critical analysis of the mechanisms/devices that conceal and disguise the exercise of power in contemporaneous capitalist social formations. To do so, we argue that the professed democracy and announced freedom by the Consumption Society and Cultural Industry are serving the unidimensionalization of the social organism; the same way certain speeches and policies that militate for the social and scholar inclusion remain dealing with the alterity under the sign of the stereotype, capture and marginalization and softened by the use of rethorical figures.(AU)

Estriagem e alisamento: usinando uma autogestão na fábrica / Framing and smoothing: building a self-management in the factory

Este artigo versa sobre uma pesquisa realizada em uma antiga fábrica da área da metalurgia a qual se tornou cooperativa após sua falência. Hoje, esta possui 200 cooperativados, a maioria funcionários da antiga fábrica./ Traçou-se aqui uma problematização da autogestão no cotidiano do empreendimento, dialogando-se sobre as implicações destas práticas na contemporaneidade. Através de um trabalho de campo, em que se compuseram registros com entrevistas e observações, traçamos uma cartografia dos fluxos do local. Percebemos o quanto os instrumentos ordenadores dos corpos e gestos haviam-se flexibilizado, sem que com isso se obtivesse um deslocamento do modus operandi fabril em sua cisão vertical entre gestão e execução. Pudemos compreender a autogestão enquanto "Fenômeno Fronteiriço" entre a lógica do Capital e a do Bem-Estar-Social e questionar seus diferentes pontos de captura e deslocamento entre estes sistemas. Por fim, contextualizamos as práticas e o conceito de autogestão no contemporâneo com suas relações flexíveis.

This paper discusses a research at an old factory of the metallurgy field that became a cooperative after it has crashed. Questions and problems about self-management are brought to be debated, including its implications. Trough field work we composed registers with interviews and observations and traced cartography of the flows of the cooperative. We perceived that the instruments that ordered bodies and gestures had been made less hard but the way of work of the factory still there. Using this we could understand self-management as a "Boundary Phenomenon" between the capitalist logic and the welfare-state logic, exploring the capturing points and the disjointing points between those systems.
