Using integrative tools can be effective for species identification, especially in complex groups like Astyanax. Astyanax bimaculatus group is composed of six valid species, including A. lacustris. "A. altiparanae", "A. asuncionensis", and "A. jacuhiensis" are considered as junior synonyms of A. lacustris. Seeking to test the operational taxonomic unit (OTU) status of the junior synonyms of A. lacustris ("A. altiparanae", "A. asuncionensis", and "A. jacuhiensis"), we used analyses through mitochondrial DNA (COI and Cytb), cytogenetic markers (classical and molecular), and morphometry ("truss network"). Analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences separated A. lacustris from the other synonymized species. The cytogenetic and morphometric analyses did not corroborate the synonymization and suggest that besides A. lacustris, the OTUs A. altiparanae, A. asuncionensis, and A. jacuhiensis are valid species. The analysis of different characters proposed by the integrative taxonomy used on the same individuals could provide greater reliability and minimize the underestimation of biodiversity.

BACKGROUND: Deer-derived materials (antler, venison, fetus, penis, bone, tail, and others) are some of the most valuable traditional animal-based medicinal and food materials in China. In production, processing, and trade, the quality of deer products varies. The market is confusing, and counterfeit and shoddy products are common. There is an urgent need to establish an accurate identification method. RESULTS: Two pairs of primers suitable for identifying deer-derived medicinal materials were obtained by screening the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequences of 18 species from nine genera of the deer family. The two primers were used to identify the species and adulteration of 22 batches of commercially available deer-derived products with a mini-barcode combining high-resolution melting (HRM) technology and methodical investigation. Deer-derived materials (sika and red deer) were correctly identified by species using varying DNA amounts (1 to 500 ng). The two pairs of primers COI-1FR and COI-2FR yielded melting temperatures (Tm) of 80.55 to 81.00 °C and 82.00 to 82.50 °C for sika deer, and 81.00 to 82.00 °C and 81.40 to 82.00 °C for red deer. Twenty-two batches of commercially available samples were analyzed by HRM analysis and conventional amplification sequencing, and it was found that the species samples had an error rate of species labeling of 31.8%. Four batches of samples were identified as mixed (adulterated) in the HRM analysis. CONCLUSION: The combination of DNA mini-barcode with HRM analysis facilitated the accurate identification of species of deer-derived materials, especially the identification of samples in an adulterated mixed state. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Species of the carnivorous family Lentibulariaceae exhibit the smallest genomes in flowering plants. We explored the hypothesis that their minute genomes result from the unique mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (COX) mutation. The mutation may boost mitochondrial efficiency, which is especially useful for suction-bladder traps of Utricularia, but also increase DNA-damaging reactive oxygen species, leading to genome shrinkage through deletion-biased DNA repair. We aimed to explore this mutation's impact on genome size, providing insights into genetic mutation roles in plant genome evolution under environmental pressures. METHODS: We compiled and measured genome and mean chromosome sizes for 127 and 67 species, respectively, representing all three genera (Genlisea, Pinguicula, and Utricularia) of Lentibulariaceae. We also isolated and analyzed COX sequences to detect the mutation. Through phylogenetic regressions and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck models of trait evolution, we assessed the impact of the COX mutation on the genome and chromosome sizes across the family. RESULTS: Our findings reveal significant correlations between the COX mutations and smaller genome and chromosome sizes. Specifically, species carrying the ancestral COX sequence exhibited larger genomes and chromosomes than those with the mutation. This evidence supports the notion that the COX mutation contributes to genome downsizing, with statistical analyses confirming a directional evolution towards smaller genomes in species harboring these mutations. CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirms that the COX mutation in Lentibulariaceae is associated with genome downsizing, likely driven by increased reactive oxygen species production and subsequent DNA damage requiring deletion-biased repair mechanisms. While boosting mitochondrial energy output, this genetic mutation compromises genome integrity and may potentially affect recombination rates, illustrating a complex trade-off between evolutionary advantages and disadvantages. Our results highlight the intricate processes by which genetic mutations and environmental pressures shape genome size evolution in carnivorous plants.

During nematode surveys of natural vegetation in forests of La Cima de Copey de Dota, San José, San José province, Costa Rica, a Xenocriconemella species closely resembling X. macrodora and related species was found. Integrative taxonomical approaches demonstrated that it is a new species described herein as X. costaricense sp. nov. The new species is parthenogenetic (only females have been detected) and characterised by a short body (276-404 µm); lip region with two annuli, not offset, not separated from body contour; first lip annulus partially covering the second lip annulus. Stylet thin, very long (113-133 µm) and flexible, occupying 30.5-47.8% of body length. Excretory pore located from one or two annuli anterior to one or two annuli posterior to level of stylet knobs, at 42 (37-45) µm from anterior end. Female genital tract monodelphic, prodelphic, outstretched, and occupying 35-45% of body length, with vagina slightly ventrally curved (14-18 µm long). Anus located 6-11 annuli from the tail terminus. Tail conoid and bluntly rounded terminus, the last 2-3 annuli oriented dorsally. Results of molecular characterisation and phylogenetic analyses of D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S rRNA, ITS, and partial 18S rRNA, as well as cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 gene sequences further characterised the new species and clearly separated it from X. macrodora and other related species (X. iberica, X. paraiberica, and X. pradense).

Cytochrome bo3 quinol oxidase belongs to the heme­copper-oxidoreductase (HCO) superfamily, which is part of the respiratory chain and essential for cell survival. While the reaction mechanism of cyt bo3 has been studied extensively over the last decades, specific details about its substrate binding and product release have remained unelucidated due to the lack of structural information. Here, we report a 2.8 Å cryo-electron microscopy structure of cyt bo3 from Escherichia coli assembled in peptidiscs. Our structural model shows a conformation for amino acids 1-41 of subunit I different from all previously published structures while the remaining parts of this enzyme are similar. Our new conformation shows a "U-shape" assembly in contrast to the transmembrane helix, named "TM0", in other reported structural models. However, TM0 blocks ubiquinone-8 (reaction product) release, suggesting that other cyt bo3 conformations should exist. Our structural model presents experimental evidence for an "open" conformation to facilitate substrate/product exchange. This work helps further understand the reaction cycle of this oxidase, which could be a benefit for potential drug/antibiotic design for health science.

Anopheles baimaii (Diptera: Culicidae) significantly contributes to the transmission of parasites causing malaria in Southeast Asia and South Asia. This study examined the morphological (wing shape) and molecular (mitochondrial gene) variations of An. baimaii in four of Thailand's border islands, and also investigated the presence of Plasmodium parasites in these mosquitoes. No Plasmodium infections were detected in the samples. Significant differences in wing shape were observed in most island populations (p < 0.05). A single-linkage tree, constructed using Mahalanobis distances, clustered the populations into two groups based on geographical locations. Genetic variation in An. baimaii was also analyzed through cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences. This analysis identified 22 segregating sites and a low nucleotide diversity of 0.004. Furthermore, 18 distinct haplotypes were identified, indicating a high haplotype diversity of 0.825. Neutrality tests for the overall population revealed a significantly negative Fu's Fs value (-5.029), indicating a population expansion. In contrast, Tajima's D yielded a negative value (-1.028) that did not reach statistical significance. The mismatch distribution analysis exhibited a bimodal pattern, and the raggedness index was 0.068, showing no significant discrepancy (p = 0.485) between observed and expected distributions. Pairwise genetic differentiation assessments demonstrated significant differences between all populations (p < 0.05). These findings provide valuable insights into the COI gene and wing morphometric variations in An. baimaii across Thailand's islands, offering critical information for understanding the adaptations of this malaria vector and guiding future comprehensive research.

Mongolia, a country in central Asia, with its vast grassland areas represents a hotspot for Orthoptera diversity, especially for the Acrididae. For Mongolia, 128 Acrididae species have been documented so far, of which 41 belong to the subfamily Oedipodinae (band-winged grasshoppers). Yet, few studies concerning the distribution and diversity of Oedipodinae have been conducted in this country. Molecular genetic data is almost completely absent, despite its value for species identification and discovery. Even, the simplest and most used data, DNA barcodes, so far have not been generated for the local fauna. Therefore, we generated the first DNA barcode data for Mongolian band-winged grasshoppers and investigated the resolution of this marker for species delimitation. We were able to assemble 105 DNA barcode (COI) sequences of 35 Oedipodinae species from Mongolia and adjacent countries. Based on this data, we reconstructed maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenies. We, furthermore, conducted automatic barcode gap discovery and used the Poisson tree process (PTP) for species delimitation. Some resolution was achieved at the tribe and genus level, but all delimitation methods failed to differentiate species by using the COI region. This lack of resolution may have multiple possible reasons, which likely differ between taxa: the lack of resolution in the Bryodemini may be partially explained by their massive genomes, implying the potential presence of large numbers of pseudogenes, while within the Sphingonotini incomplete lineage sorting and incorrect taxonomy are more likely explanations for the lack of signal. Further studies based on a larger number of gene fragments, including nuclear DNA, are needed to distinguish the species also at the molecular level.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a global pest that feeds on > 350 plant species and causes major yield loses. Variation in the responses of S. frugiperda males to female sex pheromone compounds affects the detection, monitoring and management of the pest. We determined geographic variation in the responses of S. frugiperda males to four different doses of synthetic sex pheromone compounds using a gas chromatography-electroantennogram detector (GC-EAD). Furthermore, we disentangled regional populations into C- and R- mitotypes via molecular analysis of the cytochrome oxidase I gene, and measured their responses to the compounds. When comparing responses of males from Florida, Benin, Nigeria and Kenya, we found some regional differences in the responses of S. frugiperda males to the major compound, Z9-14:OAc and minor component Z9-12:OAc. However, we found no differences in male responses between the different African countries. All males showed significantly higher antennal responses to Z7-12:OAc than to E7-12:OAc. When comparing the mitotypes, we found that Florida R-type males showed higher responses to Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc and Z9-12:OAc than Benin R-type males, while C-type males from both regions responded equally to Z7-12:OAc. In addition, Florida R-type males showed higher responses to E7-12:OAc than Florida C-type males. Our study thus shows some differential physiological responses of S. frugiperda males towards the known sex pheromone compounds, including E7-12:OAc, but mostly in the different mitotypes. How these differences translate to field trap catches remains to be determined.

The Brazilian scorpion Tityus melici, native to Minas Gerais and Bahia, is morphologically related to Tityus serrulatus, the most medically significant species in Brazil. Despite inhabiting scorpion-envenomation endemic regions, T. melici venom remains unexplored. This work evaluates T. melici venom composition and function using transcriptomics, enzymatic activities, and in vivo and in vitro immunological analyses. Next-Generation Sequencing unveiled 86 components putatively involved in venom toxicity: 39 toxins, 28 metalloproteases, seven disulfide isomerases, six hyaluronidases, three phospholipases and three amidating enzymes. T. serrulatus showed the highest number of toxin matches with 80-100 % sequence similarity. T. melici is of medical importance as it has a venom LD50 of 0.85 mg/kg in mice. We demonstrated venom phospholipase A2 activity, and elevated hyaluronidase and metalloprotease activities compared to T. serrulatus, paralleling our transcriptomic findings. Comparison of transcriptional levels for T. serrulatus and T. melici venom metalloenzymes suggests species-specific expression patterns in Tityus. Despite close phylogenetic association with T. serrulatus inferred from COI sequences and toxin similarities, partial neutralization of T. melici venom toxicity was achieved when using the anti-T. serrulatus antivenom, implying antigenic divergence among their toxins. We suggest that the Brazilian therapeutic scorpion antivenom could be improved to effectively neutralize T. melici venom.

Background: Haemagogus janthinomys is a primary sylvan vector of yellow fever virus and the emerging Mayaro virus. However, despite its medical importance, there is a dearth of data on the molecular taxonomy of this mosquito species. Methods: In this study, DNA barcoding analysis was performed on 64 adult female mosquitoes from Trinidad morphologically identified as Hg. janthinomys. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene and ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of the mosquitoes were PCR amplified and sequenced, and molecular phylogenies inferred. Results: The BLASTN analysis showed that only 20% (n = 13/66) of COI sequences had high similarity (>99% identity) to Hg. janthinomys and the remaining sequences had low similarity (<90% identity) to reference GenBank sequences. Phylogenetic analysis of COI sequences revealed the presence of four strongly supported groups, with one distinct clade that did not align with any reference sequences. Corresponding ITS2 sequences for samples in this distinct COI group clustered into three clades. Conclusions: These molecular findings suggest the existence of a putative new Haemagogus mosquito species and underscore the need for further, more in-depth investigations into the taxonomy and classification of the Haemagogus genus.

Hypercapnia increases cerebral blood flow. The effects on cerebral metabolism remain incompletely understood although studies show an oxidation of cytochrome c oxidase, Complex IV of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Systems modelling was combined with previously published non-invasive measurements of cerebral tissue oxygenation, cerebral blood flow, and cytochrome c oxidase redox state to evaluate any metabolic effects of hypercapnia. Cerebral tissue oxygen saturation and cytochrome oxidase redox state were measured with broadband near infrared spectroscopy and cerebral blood flow velocity with transcranial Doppler ultrasound. Data collected during 5-min hypercapnia in awake human volunteers were analysed using a Fick model to determine changes in brain oxygen consumption and a mathematical model of cerebral hemodynamics and metabolism (BrainSignals) to inform on mechanisms. Either a decrease in metabolic substrate supply or an increase in metabolic demand modelled the cytochrome oxidation in hypercapnia. However, only the decrease in substrate supply explained both the enzyme redox state changes and the Fick-calculated drop in brain oxygen consumption. These modelled outputs are consistent with previous reports of CO2 inhibition of mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase and isocitrate dehydrogenase. Hypercapnia may have physiologically significant effects suppressing oxidative metabolism in humans and perturbing mitochondrial signalling pathways in health and disease.

The induction of acute endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress damages the electron transport chain (ETC) in cardiac mitochondria. Activation of mitochondria-localized calpain 1 (CPN1) and calpain 2 (CPN2) impairs the ETC in pathological conditions, including aging and ischemia-reperfusion in settings where ER stress is increased. We asked if the activation of calpains causes the damage to the ETC during ER stress. Control littermate and CPNS1 (calpain small regulatory subunit 1) deletion mice were used in the current study. CPNS1 is an essential subunit required to maintain CPN1 and CPN2 activities, and deletion of CPNS1 prevents their activation. Tunicamycin (TUNI, 0.4 mg/kg) was used to induce ER stress in C57BL/6 mice. Cardiac mitochondria were isolated after 72 h of TUNI treatment. ER stress was increased in both control littermate and CPNS1 deletion mice with TUNI treatment. The TUNI treatment activated both cytosolic and mitochondrial CPN1 and 2 (CPN1/2) in control but not in CPNS1 deletion mice. TUNI treatment led to decreased oxidative phosphorylation and complex I activity in control but not in CPNS1 deletion mice compared to vehicle. The contents of complex I subunits, including NDUFV2 and ND5, were decreased in control but not in CPNS1 deletion mice. TUNI treatment also led to decreased oxidation through cytochrome oxidase (COX) only in control mice. Proteomic study showed that subunit 2 of COX was decreased in control but not in CPNS1 deletion mice. Our results provide a direct link between activation of CPN1/2 and complex I and COX damage during acute ER stress.

A new genus and species of myxomycete, Tasmaniomyxa umbilicata, is described based on numerous observations in Tasmania and additional records from southeastern Australia and New Zealand. The new taxon is characterized by an unusual combination of characters from two families: Lamprodermataceae and Didymiaceae. With Lamprodermataceae the species shares limeless sporocarps, a shining membranous peridium, an epihypothallic stalk, and a cylindrical columella. Like Didymiaceae, it has a soft, flaccid, sparsely branched capillitium, with rough tubular threads that contain fusiform nodes and are firmly connected to the peridium. Other characters of T. umbilicata that also occur in many Didymiaceae are the peridium dehiscing into petaloid lobes, the yellow, motile plasmodium, and the spores ornamented with larger, grouped and smaller, scattered warts. The transitional position of the new taxon is reflected by a three-gene phylogeny, which places T. umbilicata at the base of the branch of all lime-containing Physarales, thus justifying its description as a monotypic genus.

Objective To investigate the risk factors of drug resistance in patients with ischemic stroke by clopidogrel therapy and provide references for promoting clinical individualized drug therapy. Methods A total of 202 inpatients diagnosed with ischemic stroke were admitted and given dual anti-treatment (aspirin+clopidogrel). CYP2C19 genotype was detected by microarray hybridization during hospitalization, and CYP2C19 gene polymorphisms were classified into fast metabolism group, medium metabolism group and slow metabolism group according to the type of drug metabolism. Patients were tested for platelet inhibition induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP) according to thromboelastographic (TEG) on 7~14 d of drug administration. ADP <30% was classified as clopidogrel drug resistance group and ADP ≥30% as non-resistance group. Logistic regression analysis was used to study the risk factors for the development of clopidogrel resistance. Results Among 202 patients with ischemic stroke, 87 were in the resistant group and 115 in the non-resistant group. The proportion of patients with clopidogrel resistance combined with diabetes and the level of white blood cell count were higher than that in the non-resistant group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).The proportion of patients with clopidogrel resistance in the CYP2C19 intermediate metabolism group was significantly higher than that in the fast metabolism group, and the rate of platelet inhibition was also significantly lower than that in the fast metabolism group, all with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Conclusion Combined diabetes mellitus, high white blood cell count levels and CYP2C19 mid-metabolic phenotype are independent risk factors for the development of clopidogrel resistance in patients with ischemic stroke.

Heme-copper respiratory oxidases are highly efficient molecular machines. These membrane enzymes catalyze the final step of cellular respiration in eukaryotes and many prokaryotes: the transfer of electrons from cytochromes or quinols to molecular oxygen and oxygen reduction to water. The free energy released in this redox reaction is converted by heme-copper respiratory oxidases into the transmembrane gradient of the electrochemical potential of hydrogen ions H+). Heme-copper respiratory oxidases have a unique mechanism for generating H+, namely, a redox-coupled proton pump. A combination of direct electrometric method for measuring the kinetics of membrane potential generation with the methods of prestationary kinetics and site-directed mutagenesis in the studies of heme-copper oxidases allows to obtain a unique information on the translocation of protons inside the proteins in real time. The review summarizes the data of studies employing time-resolved electrometry to decipher the mechanisms of functioning of these important bioenergetic enzymes.

Background: The psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, is an insect vector of 'Candidatus Liberibacter' causing "Zebra chip" disease that affects potato and other Solanaceae crops worldwide. In the present study, we analyzed the bacterial communities associated with the insect vector Bactericera cockerelli central haplotype of tomato crop fields in four regions from Mexico. Methods: PCR was used to amplify the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene (mtCOI) and then analyze the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and phylogenetic analysis for haplotype identification of the isolated B. cockerelli. Moreover, we carried out the microbial diversity analysis of several B. cockerelli collected from four regions of Mexico through the NGS sequencing of 16S rRNA V3 region. Finally, Wolbachia was detected by the wsp gene PCR amplification, which is the B. cockerelli facultative symbiont. Also we were able to confirm the relationship with several Wolbachia strains by phylogenetic analysis. Results: Our results pointed that B. cockerelli collected in the four locations from Mexico (Central Mexico: Queretaro, and Northern Mexico: Sinaloa, Coahuila, and Nuevo Leon) were identified, such as the central haplotype. Analyses of the parameters of the composition, relative abundance, and diversity (Shannon index: 1.328 ± 0.472; Simpson index 0.582 ± 0.167), showing a notably relatively few microbial species in B. cockerelli. Analyses identified various facultative symbionts, particularly the Wolbachia (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) with a relative abundance higher. In contrast, the genera of Sodalis and 'Candidatus Carsonella' (Gammaproteobacteria: Oceanospirillales: Halomonadaceae) were identified with a relatively low abundance. On the other hand, the relative abundance for the genus 'Candidatus Liberibacter' was higher only for some of the locations analyzed. PCR amplification of a fragment of the gene encoding a surface protein (wsp) of Wolbachia and phylogenetic analysis corroborated the presence of this bacterium in the central haplotype. Beta-diversity analysis revealed that the presence of the genus 'Candidatus Liberibacter' influences the microbiota structure of this psyllid species. Conclusions: Our data support that the members with the highest representation in microbial community of B. cockerelli central haplotype, comprise their obligate symbiont, Carsonella, and facultative symbionts. We also found evidence that among the factors analyzed, the presence of the plant pathogen affects the structure and composition of the bacterial community associated with B. cockerelli.

Introduction: Despite a wide variety of clinical presentations in hereditary Mitochondrial Diseases, muscle fatigue is a common theme and impairs a patient's quality of life and ability to function. Current treatments are only supportive and include nutritional supplementation and physical therapy. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) using low-intensity, narrow spectrum light in the red/near infrared (NIR) range, from a low-level laser or light-emitting diode sources, enhances mitochondrial function in preclinical and clinical studies on a range of conditions. However, little research has been done on the effectiveness of photobiomodulation in hereditary mitochondrial disorders. Methods: We performed a scoping review of the evidence of the beneficial effects of photobiomodulation for treating the muscle-related symptoms of hereditary mitochondrial disease. Results: No studies regarding photobiomodulation in hereditary mitochondrial disease were identified. However, in other clinical conditions featuring acquired mitochondrial impairment, we identified studies that suggested improved function, although sample sizes were small in number and statistical power. Conclusion: There is emerging evidence of efficacy for PBMT for diseases involving acquired mitochondrial insufficiency. We identified no published research on PBMT in hereditary mitochondrial disease, but this review confirms a theoretical rationale for a positive effect and suggests further research.

The Adriatic brook lamprey, Lampetra zanandreai Vladykov 1955, was described from northeastern Italy. Its distribution is thought to include left tributaries of the River Po and the river basins of the Adriatic Sea from the River Po to the River Isonzo/Soca in Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia. It also shows a geographically isolated distribution in the Potenza River on the Adriatic slope in Central Italy. Lampetra from the Neretva River system in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Moraca River system in Montenegro that were previously identified as L. zanandreai were recently described as a new species Lampetra soljani Tutman, Freyhof, Dulcic, Glamuzina & Geiger 2017 based on morphological data and a genetic distance between the two species of roughly 2.5% in the DNA barcoding gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI). Since DNA barcodes for L. zanandreai are only available for one population from the upper Po River in northwestern Italy, we generated additional COI nucleotide sequence data of this species from Switzerland, northeastern and central Italy comprising near topotypic material and obtained GenBank sequences of the species from Slovenia to better assess the evolutionary history of the two brook lamprey species in the river basins of the Adriatic Sea. Our data show a low sequence divergence of <1% between L. zanandreai from Switzerland, northeastern and central Italy and Slovenia and the Balkan species L. soljani. However, members of the population previously identified as 'L. zanandreai' from northwest Italy are genetically highly divergent from those of L. zanandreai and likely belong to an undescribed species, L. sp. 'upper Po'. The presence of a unique and highly divergent brook lamprey lineage in the upper Po River suggests that L. zanandreai and Lampetra sp. 'upper Po' may have evolved in separate paleo drainages during the formation of the modern Po Valley subsequent to marine inundations in the Pliocene.

The leafhopper genus Errastunus contains grass-feeding leafhoppers in the deltocephaline tribe Paralimnini. The taxonomy of the genus in the Nearctic region has long been confused, with one to three distinct species recognized by different authors. Some populations have also been suggested to be adventive from Europe. Morphological and molecular data show that there are two distinct species in North America. These taxa are readily distinguishable morphologically although there is evidence of mitochondrial introgression between the species. The distribution of the two species based on historical material in collections suggests that Errastunussobrinus (DeLong & Sleesman, 1929) is native to North America, while E.ocellaris (Fallén, 1806) includes both native and adventive populations. A lectotype is designated for E.sobrinus and Cicadaocellata Scopoli, 1763 is established as a nomen oblitum with Cicadaocellaris as a nomen protectum.

A new freshwater crab of the potamid genus Candidiopotamon Bott, 1967, is described from eastern Taiwan. Candidiopotamonpenglai sp. nov. is morphologically similar to C.rathbuni (De Man, 1914) from western Taiwan, but can be distinguished by the morphology of the male first gonopod (G1), as well as by their mitochondrial DNA (16S rRNA and COI genes). In the G1 of C.rathbuni, the subterminal segment shows a cline from robust in northern populations to slender in southern populations. In the G1 of C.penglaisp. nov., a distinctly larger and more distally directed keel-like projection is found on the distal inner edge of the terminal segment, with northern populations having an inward-curving subterminal segment and southern populations a straight subterminal segment. The genetic differentiation of the two species of Candidiopotamon within Taiwan is discussed, and morphological differences are compared. A key to the species of Candidiopotamon is also provided.
