Background: Actinic dermatitis is an environmental skin disease resulting from excessive exposure to ultraviolet light irradiated by thesun. This phototoxic reaction affects dogs and cats, particularly with short hair and lightly pigmented skin, exposed to sun light. Primarylesions are typical from a sunburn and chronic exposure, and may induce to a premalignant lesion known as actinic keratosis, whichmay develop to neoplasms. The aim of the present study was to describe a retrospective study of actinic dermatitis and the occurrenceof cutaneous neoplasia in dogs presented to a Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (HCV/UFRGS) in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande doSul, Brazil in a period of 10 years.Materials, Methods & Results: A retrospective review of medical records from January 2009 to December 2019 was performed toidentify dogs with actinic dermatitis. Twenty-eight dogs were diagnosed based on a history of sun exposure and skin lesions includingerythema, scaling, comedones, thickened skin, hyperpigmentation, ulceration and/or secondary infections on poorly pigmented skin. Inaddition, in twelve dogs (42.8%) the disease was also confirmed by histopathology. Cutaneous lesions locations were previously definedas head, limbs, neck and trunk. The head was subdivided in chin, ears, face, lips and nasal plane; the limbs in pelvic and thoracic; andthe trunk, in abdomen, dorsal pelvis, perianal and thorax. All 28 dogs diagnosed with actinic dermatitis in the study had been chronically exposed to solar radiation and had light skin and coat. Dogs were between 3 and 20 years old, mean 7.6 years and median 7 years,mostly female dogs (64.3%) and neutered or spayed (64.3%). Sarna knemidocóptica apresenta relevante importância na clínica e criação de aves. São caracterizadas como ectoparasitos penetrantes, escavadores de túneis dérmicos de hospedeiros susceptíveis, causando-lhes lesões cutâneas graves e parasitando extensa gama de espécies, principalmente aquelas criadas em cativeiro. Periquitos australianos (Melopsittacus undulatus) são uma das aves psitacídeas mais comumente mantidas como animais de companhia e, destacando-se entre outras ectoparasitoses, como: ácaros das penas, dos ninhos e larvas de moscas, está o gênero Knemidokoptes spp., responsável pela sarna dos periquitos. Neste relato, foram observados sete M. undulatus da variedade inglesa, adultos sendo quatro fêmeas e 3 machos obtidos na cidade de Porto Ferreira, São Paulo. As aves apresentavam-se irritadas, coçando-se, com mutilações variadas. Pode-se observar níveis distintos de patologia nos exemplares e lesões foram observadas em toda a extensão da pele: do crânio, cera (nariz), bico, derme das asas, cauda e membros inferiores (patas), levado a ausência de penas, formação de placas elevadas de superfície irregular, porosa de coloração brancacenta e aspecto crostoso poroso. Os bordos das lesões apresentavam-se avermelhadas, onde as aves bicavam para coçar até se mutilarem. Foi coletado material córneo das áreas lesionadas e em 100%, observou-se ao microscópio óptico (40x), instares da sarna que, por características morfológicas e parasitárias, sugere-se ser a espécie K. pilae. Cinco dos sete animais: quatro fêmeas e um macho, com maior nível de lesões vieram a óbito mesmo iniciado o tratamento e duas aves: macho, menos infestadas foram curadas, porém perdurando sequelas dérmicas e hábito de coçar os membros. Este é o primeiro relato, comprovado por identificação microscópica do ácaro parasitando periquitos padrão inglês atendidos em Descalvado, SP.(AU)


Knemidocoptic mange is of relevant importance in clinical and poultry breeding. They are characterized as penetrating ectoparasites, burrowing into dermal tunnels of susceptible hosts, causing severe skin lesions and parasitizing a wide range of species, especially those bred in captivity. Australian parakeets (Melopsittacus undulatus) are one of the parrot birds most commonly kept as companion animals and, standing out among other ectoparasitosis such as: feather mites, nest mites and fly larvae, is the genus Knemidokoptes spp., responsible for mange of birds. parakeets. In this report, seven M. undulatus of the English variety were observed, adults, four females and 3 males, obtained in the city of Porto Ferreira, São Paulo. The birds were irritated, scratching themselves, with various mutilations. Different levels of pathology can be observed in the specimens and lesions were observed along the entire length of the skin: skull, wax (nose), beak, wing dermis, tail and lower limbs (legs), leading to the absence of feathers, formation of raised plaques with irregular surface, porous, whitish color and scaly porous appearance. The edges of the lesions were reddened, where the birds pecked to scratch until they mutilated themselves. Corneal material was collected from the injured areas and 100% of the scab instars were observed under an optical microscope (40x), which, due to morphological and parasitic characteristics, is suggested to be the species K. pilae. Five of the seven animals: four females and one male, with a higher level of lesions, died even after the treatment was started, and two birds: male, less infested were cured, but with dermal sequelae and the habit of scratching the limbs. This is the first report, confirmed by microscopic identification of the mite parasitizing English standard parakeets in Descalvado, SP.(AU)

A leishmaniose visceral canina, zoonose de grande importância para a saúde pública, é uma enfermidade crônica que resulta em sinais clínicos variados, dificultando seu diagnóstico. O diagnóstico definitivo da doença em cães baseia-se nos sinais clínicos associados à exames parasitológicos que, além de serem rápidos, possuem alta especificidade. Objetivou-se relatar a detecção de formas amastigotas de Leishmaniaspp. por meio de citologia de nódulos dérmicos de um cão com ausência de formas amastigotas, ao exame parasitológico, em amostras de medula óssea, linfonodos poplíteos e cervicais superficial direito e esquerdo. Uma cadela, poodle, de dez anos, com histórico de problemas dermatológicos e surgimento de nódulos dérmicos nas regiões dorsal e interdigital há cerca de dois anos foi avaliada. Ao exame físico observou-se alopecia discreta e difusa na região dorsal, com descamação. Era possível se observar nódulos com cerca de 3-5 cm de diâmetro, bem delimitados, sólidos e com aspecto inflamado nas regiões dorsal e interdigital; o animal também apresentava onicogrifose. Após avaliação clínica, realizou-se citologia de medula óssea, linfonodos poplíteos e cervicais superficiais, sendo estes negativos para a presença de formas de parasitas. Adicionalmente, amostras citológicas dos nódulos dérmicos foram colhidas tendo sido observadas formas amastigotas de Leishmaniaspp. nesses materiais. Conclui-se que a citologia do nódulo dérmico foi um método complementar de diagnóstico de leishmaniose em um cão negativo ao exame parasitológico de amostras de medula óssea e linfonodos.(AU)


Canine visceral leishmaniasis, a zoonosis of great public health importance, is a chronic disease that presents varied clinical signs, making its diagnosis very difficult. The definitive diagnosis of this disease is based on clinical signs associated with parasitological evaluations which, in addition to being quick, show high specificity. The objective of this study was to report the detection of amastigote forms of Leishmaniaspp. by cytology of dermal nodules from a dog negative at parasitological tests of bone marrow, popliteal and right superficial cervical and left lymph node samples. A female dog with a history of dermatological problems and the appearance of dermal nodules in the dorsal and interdigital regions was treated during the past two years. At physical examination, a slight diffuse alopecia was noted on the dorsal region, with desquamation. It was also possible to observe well defined nodules measuring about 3-5 cm of diameter, solid and with an inflammatory aspect on the dorsal and interdigital regions; the dog also presented onychogryphosis. After clinical evaluation, bone marrow, popliteal and superficial cervical lymph node aspiration biopsies were performed, and all of these were negative for the presence of parasites. Additionally, cytological samples of dermal nodules were collected where amastigote forms of Leishmania spp. were observed. We concluded that dermal nodule cytology was a complementary method for diagnosing visceral leishmaniasis in a dog negative at parasitological evaluation of bone marrow and lymph node samples.(AU)

RESUMO: Dermatite alérgica de contato é uma doença cutânea inflamatória, não infecciosa, cuja base do tratamento é a identificação e eliminação do agente causal. Cocoamidopropil betaína é um surfactante muito utilizado nos produtos de uso pessoal, notadamente de uso capilar. Essa substância não está presente na bateria padrão brasileira. Neomicina é um antibiótico usado em preparações tópicas. Objetivamos mostrar paciente que desenvolveu alergia no couro cabeludo e que fez erroneamente automedicação com produto que continha substância a qual era ainda mais sensível. O caso é de uma mulher, 36 anos, evoluindo há dois meses com eczema pruriginoso, em áreas de implantação capilar e nuca. Relatava progressiva piora. Diante da suspeita de dermatite de contato, foi realizado teste de contato, utilizando-se da bateria padrão Latino-Americana. Com 96 horas (D4) evidenciou-se positividade leve (+) para cocoamidopropil betaína e forte (++) para neomicina. O resultado positivo para a neomicina foi intrigante, uma vez que a observação do rótulo dos produtos de uso pessoal não a continha. Diante do resultado do teste, após ser questionada novamente, ela confirmou a omissão da automedicação diária com pomada de neomicina. Em conclusão, mostramos a alergia a produtos de uso capilar. Reforçamos a necessidade de se fazer um teste de contato com bateria padrão atualizada. Por fim, alertamos sobre o risco da automedicação. (AU)


ABSTRACT: Allergic contact dermatitis is an inflammatory, non-infectious skin disease. The treatment is based on the identification and elimination of the causal agent. Cocamidopropyl betaine is a surfactant widely used in products for personal use, especially capillary use. This substance is not present in the Brazilian baseline series. Neomycin is an antibiotic used in topical preparations. We aimed to show a patient who developed na allergy in the scalp and mistakenly self-medicated with a product that contained a substance to which it was even more sensitive. The case is of a woman, 36 years old, evolving for 2 months with pruritic eczema, in areas of capillary and nape implantation. She reported progressive worsening. When contact dermatitis was suspected, a contact test was performed using the Latin American baseline series. At 96 hours (D4) there was mild positivity (+) for cocamidopropyl betaine and strong (++) for neomycin. The positive result for neomycin was intriguing, since the observation of the label of products for personal use did not contain it. In view of the test result, after being questioned again, she confirmed the omission of daily self-medication with neomycin ointment. In conclusion, we showed the allergy to hair products. We reinforced the need for an updated baseline series patch test. Finally, we warned about the risk of self-medication. (AU)

Juvenile cellulitis (JC) is an uncommon vesiculopustular disease that affects dogs, especially those under four months of age. The aim of the present study was to characterize the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic profile of JC based on clinical records of canine patients treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, between the years 2009 and 2016. A total of five cases were diagnosed. Four dogs presented at an average age of two months and 22 days and were crossbred; the other dog was a rottweiler aged 38 weeks. The average time of evolution of the disease was 16 days, and the main clinical signs were edema, papules, pustules, and bilateral ocular discharge. The diagnosis was confirmed by cytology in four animals and by histopathology in only one patient. For all dogs, the treatment was based on cephalexin, administered for 30 days, and prednisolone for three weeks. Otological therapy was included when necessary. Four cases had a favorable outcome. JC is a rare dermatopathy that deserves special attention from veterinary practitioners.(AU)


A celulite juvenil (CJ) é uma doença vesiculopustular incomum que acomete cães principalmente na faixa etária inferior aos quatro meses. Este trabalho analisou o perfil epidemiológico, clínico e terapêutico da CJ em cães a partir da casuística do Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, referente aos anos de 2009 a 2016. Cinco casos foram diagnosticados, incluindo quatro cães (80%), sem raça definida e com idade média de dois meses e 22 dias, e um da raça Rottweiler (20%) com 38 meses de idade. O período evolutivo médio das lesões foi de 16 dias e os principais sinais clínicos observados foram edema, pápulas, pústulas e secreção ótica bilateral. O diagnóstico foi confirmado por citologia (80%) e histopatologia (20%). Em todos os animais, o tratamento consistiu de cefalexina, administrada por 30 dias, e prednisolona, por três semanas. A terapia otológica tópica foi incluída quando necessária. Em quatro casos o desfecho clínico foi favorável. A CJ é uma dermatopatia rara que merece atenção especial dos clínicos veterinários.(AU)

O diagnóstico foi confirmado por citologia (80%) e histopatologia (20%). Em todos os animais, o tratamento consistiu de cefalexina, administrada por 30 dias, e prednisolona, por três semanas. A terapia otológica tópica foi incluída quando necessária. Em quatro casos o desfecho clínico foi favorável. A CJ é uma dermatopatia rara que merece atenção especial dos clínicos veterinários.(AU)

RESUMO

Abstract The human T-cell lymphotropic virus-1 (HTLV-1) affects worldwide population; the estimated number of currently infected individuals is 10-20 million. In this report, we describe the clinical findings of three family members with vertical transmission of HTLV-1. This case report highlights the importance of healthcare providers who have optimal knowledge about HTLV-1 including its transmission and pertinent attributes, and who are able to provide affected individuals with adequate information regarding their condition.

A celulite juvenil (CJ) é uma dermatopatia rara em cães filhotes. Seureconhecimento é importante, pois raramente há resolução espontânea, e os animais não tratados podem morrer. Acredita-se ser um distúrbio Imunomediado, caracterizadopor inicio súbito de lesões dermatológicas em face, otite e linfoadenomegalia submandibular. Apresenta-se uma revisão de literatura e dois casos de CJ, uma teckel de dois meses e um pointer de cinquenta dias, acometidos de alopecia, edema, crostas, pápulas e pústulas (faciais), blefarite, linfoadenomegalia e edema genital. O tratamento baseou-se em prednisona e cefalexina, e após o inicio a primeira passou a apresentar otite e o segundo, tetraparesia e foliculite bacteriana.Houve remissão dos sinais em 3 e em 6,5 semanas de terapia, com permanência de cicatrizes. O reconhecimento da doença permite a utilização de imunossupressoresque, se forem instituídos precocemente, melhoram o prognóstico.(AU)


Juvenile cellulitis (JC) is a rare skin disease of puppies . Its recognition isimportant, since spontaneous resolution is rare and untreated animaLs can die. It is probably an immune-mediated disorder, characterized by sudden onset of skin lesions on the face , ear and submandibular lymphadenomegaly. This article presents a literature review and two case reports of JC: a two-month-old female dachshund and a fifty-day male pointer, both with alopecia, edema, crustinq, papules and pustules in the face, blepharitis, enlarged lymph nodes and genital edema. Treatment wasbased on the administration of prednisone and cephalexin. Soon after treatment onset, the dachshund began to present otitis and the pointer tetraparesis and bacterial folliculitis. There was remission of signs three weeks and seven weeks after therapyonset, but scars remained. The recognition of the disease enables the use of immunosuppressants that, if instituted early, improve the prognosis.(AU)

Su reconocimiento es importante, ya que son pocos los casos de resolución espontánea, y los animales que no san tratados pueden morir. Se cree que es una enfermedad inmunomediada que se caracteriza por un inicio súbito de lesiones dermatológicas en la cara, otitis y linfoadenomegalia submandibular. En este trabajo se presenta una revisión de la literatura y dos casos de CJ, una Teckel de dos meses y un Pointer de cincuenta dias, que presentaban alopecia, edema, costras, pápulasy pústulas (faciales), blefaritis, linfoadenomegalia y edema genital. RESUMO

A dermatite de contato alérgica é consequência de uma reação imune mediada por células T contra químicos de baixo peso molecular, denominados haptenos. É uma condição frequente que ocorre em todas as raças e faixas etárias e afeta a qualidade de vida de seus portadores. O mecanismo imunológico desta doença vem sendo revisto nas últimas décadas com significativo avanço no seu entendimento. A metabolização e o caminho dos haptenos, bem como a formação e o mecanismo de ação das células responsáveis tanto pela reação quanto pelo seu término, são discutidos neste artigo.


Allergic contact dermatitis is the consequence of an immune reaction mediated by T cells against low molecular weight chemicals known as haptens. It is a common condition that occurs in all races and age groups and affects the quality of life of those who present it. The immunological mechanism of this disease has been reviewed in recent decades with significant advance in its understanding. The metabolism and pathway of the haptens as well as the activation and mechanism of action of the cells responsible for both the immune reaction and its completion are discussed in this article.

Background: Cutaneous mycobacterioses show a worldwide distribution and manifest as three forms: atypical mycobacteriosis, feline leprosy and cutaneous tuberculosis. Atypical cutaneous mycobacteriosis in cats is a rare disease commonly caused by fast-growing mycobacteria belonging group IV of the Runyon classification. This report describes for the first time an autochthonous case of atypical cutaneous mycobacteriosis in a cat from the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Case: A castrated female mongrel cat presented multiple ulcerated, exudative and alopecic lesions in different regions of the body. After sedation of the animal with 1% acepromazine hydrochloride (0.1 mg/kg) and 10% ketamine hydrochloride (10 mg/kg), clinical examination was performed and an exudate was collected from the ulcerated skin lesion for cytopathological analysis and mycological culture. The slide containing the lesion impression was stained by a rapid panoptic method. For fungal culture, material was collected with a sterile swab, seeded onto Sabouraud dextrose agar containing chloramphenicol and mycobiotic agar, and incubated at 25ºC. After antisepsis and asepsis, local anesthesia was performed with 2% lidocaine hydrochloride without vasoconstrictor and a 4 mm punch biopsy was collected from the lesion, fixed in 10% buffered formalin and sent for histopathological analysis. No fungal structures were detected by cytopathological or mycological analysis. Histopathological examination revealed ulcerated skin and the presence of a marked and diffuse pyogranulomatous infiltrate in the superficial and deep dermis, which also involving the subcutaneous tissue and underlying muscle tissue. Grocotts or PAS staining did not identify fungal structures. The Wade method was positive for acid-fast bacteria suggestive of Mycobacterium. Analysis of the hematological and biochemical profiles revealed no noteworthy alterations.(...)(AU)

Apresenta-se o caso de uma profissional da área da saúde que desenvolveu reação de hipersensibilidade dos tipos I e IV à borracha. O quadro clínico mostrava dermatite eczematosa no dorso das mãos. O teste de contato foi positivo para o grupo tiuram, assim como o teste aberto com fragmento de luva após exposição de 20 minutos. A dosagem de IgE sérica (Rast) mostrou-se relevante. As reações aos alérgenos da borracha são frequentes entre os profissionais da saúde, devido ao contato constante com esse material.


We present a case of a healthcare professional that developed type I and IV hypersensitivity reactions to rubber. During the clinical examination the patient showed eczematous dermatitis of the hands. The patch test was positive for thiuram group and an open test with a piece of glove was positive after 20 minutes of exposure. Allergen-specific IgE test (RAST) was relevant. Reactions to rubber allergens are frequent among healthcare professionals due to constant contact with this material.
