Since the 21st century, the leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease, with myocardial infarction being the most common. The incidence and prevalence of obesity has risen sharply in recent years, and it is commonly recognised as a cardiovascular risk factor among tobacco smoking, dyslipidemia (high LDL-C, high triglycerides, low HDL-C), hypertension, diabetes, age, gender, hereditary predisposition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective study conducted at the Craiova Emergency Clinical Hospital between October 2020 and January 2023. Enrolled patients are 60, 36 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and 24 patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction. The data was collected from the hospital's official database and then analyzed using Microsoft Excel and the Toolbar Data Analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients in the study was 62 years with a minimum of 34 years and a maximum of 84 years. 23(38.3%) of patients were smokers, 7(11.6%) were ex-smokers and 30(50%) were non-smokers. 49(81.6%) patients were hypertensive. 44(73%) had cholesterol greater than 200mg/dl. 54(90%) had LDL>100mg/dl, 18(30%) had HDL>45mg/gl, 24(40%) patients had serum TG>150mg/dl, 17(28%) were overweight and 13(22%) were obese, 30(50%) were normal weight. 18(30%) patients had type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Among the cardiovascular risk factors in the patients studied, hypertension was the most common, followed by dyslipidemia, obesity, smoking, diabetes mellitus, and very rarely the use of drugs and anabolic substances.

SUMMARY: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Protocatechuic acid and Corchorus olitorius on streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rat testis tissue. Randomly selected Wistar Albino rats were divided into five groups as; Diabetes Mellitus, Diabetes Mellitus treated with Corchorus Olitorus (STZ+CO), Diabetes Mellitus treated with Protacatechuic acid (STZ+PCA), Corchorus olitorius (CO), Protocatechuic acid (PCA) and Control. Diabetic model was generated by intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg Streptozotosin. After 48 hours of the STZ injection, blood samples were collected from tail vein in order to measure blood glycose levels. Over 250 mg/dL accepted as diabetic subjets and fed with 250 mg/kg Corchorus olitorius or 20 mg/kg PCA by oral gavage for three weeks. At the end of the experiment, right testes were removed and fixed in 10 % neutral formaldehyde for paraffine embedding. Sections were stained by HE, Masson trichrome, PAS and TUNEL for microscopic evaluation. Control, PCA-only and Corchorus olitorius-only treated group testes tissues showed a normal tissue organization, when degeneration in seminiferous tubules, the vacuolization, seperations in spermatogenic cell series, outpouring of cell groups in the lumen, vesicular body formation, liquid accumulation in the interstitial region and edema were observed in STZ induced diabetic models and untreated groups. Besides, higher amount of TUNEL (+) stained cells were determined in STZ group. On the other hand, blood glucose level and number of TUNEL (+) stained cells were decreased as a result of PCA and Corchorus olitorius treatment. Because of the reduction of blood glucose level and apoptotic cell numbers, PCA and Corchorus olitorius decreace the complications of diabetes mellitus induced rat testis.


RESUMEN: El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar los efectos del ácido protocatéquico y Corchorus olitorius sobre el tejido testicular de rata diabética inducida por estreptozotocina (STZ). Las ratas Wistar Albino fueron seleccionadas al azar y se dividieron en cinco grupos; Diabetes Mellitus, Diabetes Mellitus tratada con Corchorus olitorius (STZ + CO), Diabetes Mellitus tratada con ácido protocatéquico (STZ + PCA), Corchorus olitorius (CO), ácido protocatéquico (PCA) y Control. El modelo diabético se generó por inyección intraperitoneal de 60 mg/kg de estreptozotosina. Después de 48 horas de la inyección de STZ, se recogieron muestras de sangre de la vena de la cola para medir los niveles de glucosa. Niveles mayores a 250 mg/dL fueron considerados como especímenes diabéticos y alimentados con Corchorus olitorius de 250 mg/kg o PCA de 20 mg/kg por sonda oral durante tres semanas. Al final del experimento, se extirparon los testículos derechos y se fijaron en formaldehído neutro al 10 % para la inclusión en parafina. Las secciones se tiñeron con HE, tricromo de Masson, PAS y TUNEL para evaluación microscópica. Los tejidos de los testículos de los grupos control, tratados solo con PCA y con Corchorus olitorius mostraron una organización tisular normal. En cambio en modelos diabéticos inducidos por STZ y grupos no tratados se observó degeneración en los túbulos seminíferos, vacuolización, separaciones en series de células espermatogénicas, efusión de grupos celulares en la luz, formación del cuerpo vesicular, acumulación de líquido en la región intersticial y edema. Además, se determinó una mayor cantidad de células teñidas con TUNEL (+) en el grupo STZ. Por otro lado, el nivel de glucosa en sangre y el número de células teñidas con TUNEL (+) disminuyeron como resultado del tratamiento con PCA y Corchorus olitorius. Debido a la reducción del nivel de glucosa en sangre y el número de células apoptóticas, se observó que PCA y Corchorus olitorius disminuyen las complicaciones de los testículos de rata inducidos por diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a periodic, partial or complete obstruction in the upper airway during sleep that disrupts normal sleep pattern. Despite its significant morbidities and mortality, the majority of patients with OSA remain undiagnosed. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of OSA risk among type 2 diabetes patients on follow up at Jimma Medical Center from January 13 to March 2, 2020. METHOD: A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted and consecutive sampling technique was employed. The stop bang questionnaire was used to assess OSA risk. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and entered into EPI data 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Logistic regression was employed to identify factors associated with high risk OSA. A variable having a p-value of <0.2 in the bivariate model was subjected to multivariate analysis. Adjusted odds ratios were calculated at 95% confidence interval and considered significant with a p-value of ≤0.05. RESULT: 253 patients seen in the outpatient clinic were involved with mean age and mean duration of diabetes was 50.27 ± 14.08 and 6.48 ± 5.20 years respectively. The study finding showed that the prevalence of high risk OSA was 45.5%. According to multivariate analysis comorbid hypertension (AOR = 2; 95% CI: 1.04, 3.89), physical inactivity (AOR = 2.11; 95% CI: 1.11,4), BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2: (AOR = 5.41; 95% CI: 1.68,17.3 and neck circumference > 40 cm: (AOR = 6.3; 95% CI: 2.8,14.2 were independently associated with an increased risk of OSA. CONCLUSION: There is high number of participants with high risk of OSA. BMI of ≥ 30 kg/m2, physical inactivity, neck circumference of > 40 cm and comorbid hypertension were associated with high risk OSA among participants. Early detection and appropriate interventions are important among high risk groups.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) and Candida and bacteria species, prevalence and possible association with age, gender, smoking, denture wearing, and diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Tongue examinations were performed on 4244 consecutive patients. Of all the examined patients, 30 diagnosed with MRG were selected as the study group and another 30 patients were selected as the control group, and these 2 groups were compared in terms of age and gender. Tongue cultures from these 60 patients were subjected to bacterial and mycological examinations. RESULTS: MRG frequency was detected to be 0.7%. In mycological examination, Candida species were determined in 90.0% of the MRG patients and in 46.6% of the control group. This difference was statistically significant. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that diabetes mellitus and 20-39 years of age were significantly related to MRG. However, the association between MRG, gender, smoking, and 40-69 years of age was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: It was determined that although there was a significant association between MRG, Candida and diabetes mellitus, the possible risk factors such as gender, smoking, and denture wearing for oral candidiasis were invalid for MRG.

OBJECTIVE: The use of oral hypoglycemic drugs in pregnant women has been limited and therefore there is scanty information on their safety. Concern about possible adverse effects of these drugs on the fetus led us to collect the cases of unintentional fetal exposure to oral antidiabetic agent during embryogenesis for comparision with an appropriately matched control group from the same clinic population. METHODS: Eight type 2 diabetic pregnant women with accidental exposure to oral antidiabetic agent during early pregnancy and 20 type 2 diabetic pregnant women matched for age, weight, and glycemic control but not exposed to oral antidiabetic agent were studied retrospectively. RESULTS: Three neonates (38%) in the exposed group had congenital malformations and still birth, compared with 5 (25%) in the control group (Odds ratio 1.8 (0.2-13.8), P>0.05). In the control group, the mean of HbA1c of 5 mothers of neonates with anomalies and stillbirth were higher than that of 15 mothers of neonates without anomaly (8.8% vs 6.2%, p=0.1) and the anomalies were major congenital malformation including three congenital heart diseases (1 ventricular septal defect, 2 patent ductus arteriosus) and one renal agenesis. In the exposed group, the mean of HbA1c of 3 mothers of neonates with anomalies and stillbirth were higher than that of 5 mothers of neonates without anomaly (9.0% vs 6.3%, p=0.4) and the anomlies were urachal sinus and facial palsy which was not commonly described in diabetic embryopathy. CONCLUSION: Although this study, due to the limited number of pregnancies examined, does not exclude an association between treatment with oral antidiabetic agent at the time of embryogenesis and congenital malformations in the offspring, the risk of our results is lower than that of others. The final answer will demand a much larger number of pregnancies studied prospectively.
