RESUMO

Partially Saturated Vertical Constructed Wetlands (PSV-CWs) are novel wastewater treatment systems that work through aerobic and anaerobic conditions that favor the removal of pollutants found in high concentrations, such as rivers contaminated with domestic wastewater and landfill leachate. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of PSV-CWs using monocultures and polycultures of Typha latifolia and Heliconia psittacorum to treat river waters contaminated with leachates from open dumps and domestic wastewater. Six experimental units of PSV-CWs were used; two were planted with Typha latifolia monoculture, two with Heliconia psittacorum monoculture and two with polycultures of both plants. The results indicated better organic matter and nitrogen removal efficiencies (p < 0.05) in systems with polycultures (TSS:95%, BOD5:83%, COD:89%, TN:82% and NH4+:99%). In general, the whole system showed high average removal efficiencies (TSS:93%, BOD5:79%, COD:85%, TN:79%, NH4+:98% and TP:85%). Regarding vegetation, both species developed better in units with monocultures, being Typha latifolia the one that reached a more remarkable development. However, both species showed high resistance to the contaminated environment. These results showed higher removals than those reported in the literature with conventional Free Flow Vertical Constructed Wetlands (FFV-CWs), so PSV-CWs could be a suitable option to treat this type of effluent.

The research addresses the contamination of water resources in developing countries by landfill leachate and domestic wastewater discharges. It proposes treatment through Partially Saturated Vertical Constructed Wetlands (PSV-CWs), which, despite the limited information available, have been shown to be effective in removing pollutants in effluents with high concentrations. In addition to evaluating PSV-CWs, the study examines the impact of different types of vegetation on pollutant removal efficiency, concluding that PSV-CWs are a promising and viable option for the treatment of these effluents.

RESUMO

Minimizing sludge generation in activated sludge systems is critical to reducing the operational cost of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), particularly for small plants where bioenergy is not recovered. This study introduces a novel acidic activated sludge technology for in situ sludge yield reduction, leveraging acid-tolerant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Candidatus Nitrosoglobus). The observed sludge yield (Yobs) was calculated based on the cumulative sludge generation and COD removal during 400 d long-term operation. The acidic process achieved a low Yobs of 0.106 ± 0.004 gMLSS/gCOD at pH 4.6 to 4.8 and in situ free nitrous acid (FNA) of 1 to 3 mg/L, reducing sludge production by 58 % compared to the conventional neutral-pH system (Yobs of 0.250 ± 0.003 gMLSS/gCOD). The acidic system also maintained effective sludge settling and organic matter removal over long-term operation. Mechanism studies revealed that the acidic sludge displayed higher endogenous respiration, sludge hydrolysis rates, and higher soluble microbial products and loosely-bounded extracellular polymer substances, compared to the neutral sludge. It also selectively enriched several hydrolytic genera (e.g., Chryseobacterium, Acidovorax, and Ottowia). Those results indicate that the acidic pH and in situ FNA enhanced sludge disintegration, hydrolysis, and cryptic growth. Besides, a lower intracellular ATP content was observed for acidic sludge than neutral sludge, suggesting potential decoupling of catabolism and anabolism in the acidic sludge. These findings collectively demonstrate that the acidic activated sludge technology could significantly reduce sludge yield, contributing to more cost- and space-effective wastewater management.

RESUMO

Efforts to regulate and monitor emerging contaminants are insufficient because new chemicals are continually brought to market, and many are unregulated and potentially harmful. Domestic wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove micropollutants and are important sources of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. In this study, non-target screening, an unbiased method for analyzing compounds without prior information, was used to identify compounds that may be emitted in wastewater treatment plant effluent and should be monitored. Nine wastewater treatment plants using different treatment methods were studied, and a non-target screening data-processing method was used. The frequencies at which the contaminants were detected and contaminant persistence through the treatment processes were considered, and then the contaminants were prioritized. The predicted no-effect concentration of each prioritized contaminant was used to determine whether further analysis and monitoring of the contaminant was necessary. Quantitative analyses of five compounds (amantadine, atenolol, benzotriazole, diphenhydramine, and sulpiride) were performed using reference standards. Probable molecular formulae and structures were proposed for 17 contaminants, and the risks posed by the contaminants were estimated using predicted no-effect concentrations. The results provide valuable insights into how unregulated micropollutants can be identified and prioritized for monitoring in future studies.

RESUMO

This study investigated the potential of using biochar and Moringa oleifera seed proteins for sustainable greywater treatment in rural Kenya. Greywater samples from washing clothes were collected from households in the Kenyan counties of Kwale and Siaya. Two treatment methods, batch stirring and filtration, were used to assess the effectiveness of using biochar and Moringa oleifera seed protein extract together to treat greywater at a household level. Both methods achieved a significant reduction in contaminants: colour was reduced by up to 43% in Kwale and 67% in Siaya, turbidity decreased by 91-98%, and surfactant levels were lowered by 89-93%. There were increases in total organic carbon and total dissolved solids post-treatment, but both methods effectively reduced levels of phosphates, nitrates and iron. This research highlights the potential of using locally available materials for greywater treatment and provides insights into sustainable water management nature-based solutions in the Global South.

RESUMO

While substantial progress has been made in improving water and sanitation services in low- and middle-income countries, aligned basic services such as greywater, stormwater, and solid waste management have progressed little in recent decades. Data was collected in Khulna city, Bangladesh via a household survey (n = 192) of low-income areas exploring domestic water use and greywater volumes, characteristics, and disposal practices. Most households (71%) use a piped water supply for domestic purposes, supplemented by seasonal rainwater harvesting (26%) and greywater use (13%). Of the total water used by households (mean: 594 L/household/day and equivalent to 116 L/person/day), approximately 58% becomes greywater through bathing, dishwashing, religious practices, handwashing, laundry, and mopping. Greywater produced ranges from 61-1274 L/household/day, with a mean of 345 L/household/day and equivalent to 78.4 L/person/day. Greywater characteristics vary depending on the activity, individual behaviours and any products used during cooking, bathing, or cleaning. After generation, households dispose greywater to open drains (67%), nearby waterbodies (17%) directly to the ground (9%), or decentralised wastewater treatment system (7%). Without services for greywater management, greywater disposal may have considerable public and environmental health implications, necessitating careful attention and oversight from service-providers and stakeholders beyond the household-level.

RESUMO

Growing industrialization and urbanization have led to increased water pollution due to the inadequate treatment and disposal of domestic wastewater (DW) and wastewater produced by industries such as tanneries (TW). These wastewaters are characterized by high concentrations of organic matter, nutrients, sulphates, chlorides and high microbial load. TW also contains phenols and chromium, which disturb and harm the ecosystem the local. The decontamination of wastewater prior to their discharge through biological tools, especially the use of species that are native to the site in need of treatment, has been described as effective and advantageous. This study evaluated the ability of Schoenoplectus americanus, a native plant species from Cordoba (Argentina), to phytoremediate local DW and TW samples at a laboratory scale. The aim was to ascertain whether this system could potentially be considered for the remediation of wastewater in real-world scenarios. S. americanus was able to tolerate pure DW and a 1/20 (v/v) dilution of TW for 30 days under hydroponic conditions. Removal rates ranging from 50% to 89% were obtained for residual organic matter (determined as chemical oxygen demand or COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). Significant removal of total chromium (TCr) and total phenols (TPhs) was also observed in TW (85% and 98%). The number of total coliforms (TC), was reduced by about 96% and 99%. These results indicate that S. americanus is a good candidate for the phytoremediation of regional DW and TW. For this reason, it may be considered for full-scale applications in the future.

RESUMO

By 2021, rural regions in China were occupied by over 500 million residents, generating an annual volume of 19.5 billion m3 of rural domestic wastewater (RDW). This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and removal of micropollutants (MPs) in RDW treatment facilities and to perform a corresponding wastewater-based epidemiology analysis (WBE). Our findings indicated the significantly high levels of influent MPs, particularly pharmaceuticals, such as ofloxacin and diclofenac being most prevalent (ranging from several to tens of µg/L) across different facilities. After various treatments, regular water indexes in the effluent, like NH3 -N and COD, have basically satisfied the local discharge standard. However, the concentration of certain dominant MPs in effluent remained notably high, ranging from hundreds of ng/L to several µg/L. The risk quotients of MPs like diclofenac, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, diuron, and isoproturon were all above 1 in the effluent, signifying significant hazards to aquatic organisms. The quantitative meta-analysis revealed higher average standardized removal efficiency for membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment (-11 %) compared to anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A2O) treatment (11 %), indicating the higher efficiency of MBR treatment in outperforming the A2O as a secondary treatment. Additionally, employing biofilter as a tertiary treatment proved to be more effective as compared to flocculation-air flotation and artificial wetlands. Moreover, the results of WBE analysis showed that diclofenac and ofloxacin emerged as the most commonly used pharmaceuticals (of seven), with consumption levels recorded at 1222 and 517 mg/(d·103 capita), with daily defined doses per day per 103 capita of 12.2/1000 and 1.29/1000, respectively. This study addresses the existing knowledge gaps regarding the occurrence and removal of MPs in RDW and offers valuable insights into pharmaceutical consumption patterns in rural regions, thereby improving our understanding of public health.

RESUMO

This work presents a sensitive and accurate analytical method for the determination of phenytoin at trace levels in domestic wastewater and synthetic urine samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after the metal sieve-linked double syringe liquid-phase microextraction (MSLDS-LPME) method. A metal sieve was produced in our laboratory in order to disperse water-immiscible extraction solvents into aqueous media. Univariate optimization studies for the selection of proper extraction solvent, extraction solvent volume, mixing cycle, and initial sample volume were carried out. Under the optimum MSLDS-LPME conditions, mass-based dynamic range, limit of quantitation (LOQ), limit of detection (LOD), and percent relative standard deviation (%RSD) for the lowest concentration in calibration plot were figured out to be 100.5-10964.2 µg kg-1, 150.6 µg kg-1, 45.2 µg kg-1, and 9.4%, respectively. Detection power was improved as 187.7-folds by the developed MSLDS-LPME-GC-MS system while enhancement in calibration sensitivity was recorded as 188.0-folds. In the final step of this study, the accuracy and applicability of the proposed system were tested by matrix matching calibration strategy. Percent recovery results for domestic wastewater and synthetic urine samples were calculated as 95.6-110.3% and 91.7-106.6%, respectively. These results proved the accuracy and applicability of the proposed preconcentration method, and the obtained analytical results showed the efficiency of the lab-made metal sieve apparatus.

RESUMO

As of 2022, China's rural sewage treatment rate is only approximately 31 %. Rapid rural development has led to higher demand. However, China's rural areas are complex and face many problems, such as uneven economic development, population distribution, and water availability. Long-lasting and low-cost wastewater treatment measures are needed for application in rural areas. The quantity and quality of rural domestic wastewater in China were characterized first. Next, the hot topic of domestic wastewater in Chinese villages was confirmed via bibliometric analysis using CiteSpace, and the treatment technologies for rural domestic wastewater were compared. Specifically, the technical status and challenges of the most common technology in rural domestic wastewater treatment, constructed wetlands, were summarized.

RESUMO

The objective of the study was to evaluate the performance of Pistia stratiotes for treatment of domestic wastewater in a free surface water flow constructed wetland. The objective of the study was to evaluate contaminants removal efficiency of the constructed wetland vegetated with P. stratiotes in treatment of domestic wastewater against Hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10, 20 and 30 days was investigated. This asks for newer and efficient low-cost nature-based water treatment system which along with cost takes into consideration the sustainability of the ecosystem. Five constructed wetland setups improved the wastewater quality and purify it significantly by reducing the TDS by 83%, TSS by 82%, BOD by 82%, COD by 81%, Chloride by 80%, Sulfate by 77%, NH3 by 84% and Total Oil and Grease by 74%. There was an increase in pH of about 11.9%. Color and odor of wastewater was also improved significantly and effectively. It was observed that 30 days' HRT was optimum for the treatment of domestic wastewater. The final effluent was found to be suitable as per national environmental quality standards and recycled for watering plants and crop irrigation but not for drinking purposes. The treatment in constructed wetland system was found to be economical, as the cost of construction only was involved and operational and maintenance cost very minimal. Even this research was conducted on the sole purpose of commuting the efficiency of pollutant removal in short span time.

RESUMO

To mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the wastewater treatment industry, it is crucial to explore GHG emission patterns and propose useful measures. In this study, we use the Kaya model and LMDI decomposition method to analyze the changes in GHG emissions from urban domestic wastewater treatment at the provincial level and further explore the distribution characteristics and driving factors of urban domestic wastewater treatment GHG emissions across various years and regions. The results indicate the following: (1) In the temporal dimension, urban domestic wastewater treatment GHG emissions are increasing, from 21.0 MtCO2 in 2011 to 27.1 MtCO2 in 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 2.88%. The spatial distribution is high in the southeast and low in the northwest. There is variability in the spatial evolution trend of GHG emissions by province, with the growth rate becoming slower or even negative in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and North China, while the average annual growth rate exceeds 25% in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. (2) According to the decomposition results of driving factors, economic scale is the dominant positive driver, and the positive contributions of TI and the population effect are limited. The sludge disposal structure is the main negative driver, and the EEI and technology have restricted negative contributions. (3) Based on the decomposition results, for major coastal GHG emitters, such as Guangdong and Shandong, it is necessary to invest capital and technology to continuously upgrade the wastewater treatment process and reduce non-CO2 emissions. Along with adopting circular economy schemes, local governments in the northwestern region should transform the traditional sludge disposal structure and optimize the power supply structure to increase carbon offset and reduce CO2 emissions. The findings suggest a low-carbon transformation path to support the industry's dual carbon goals.

RESUMO

This study presents a novel treatment system using a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) followed by adsorption onto thermally treated biowaste, and ending with a final treatment using powdered activated carbon (PAC). Despite limited phosphate and ammonium ion removal during SAnMBR operation, thermally treated eggshell (EGSL) and seagrass (SG) received SAnMBR effluent and enhanced phosphate recovery, achieving removal rates of 71.8-99.9% and 60.5-78.0%, respectively. The SAnMBR achieved an 85% COD removal, which was slightly reduced further by biowaste treatment. However, significant further reductions in COD to 20.2 ± 5.2 mg/L for EGSL effluent and 57.0 ± 13.3 mg/L for SG effluent were achieved with PAC. Phytotoxicity tests showed the SAnMBR effluent after PAC treatment notably improved seed growth compared to untreated wastewater. In addition, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were significantly reduced in the system, including common wastewater contaminants such as dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, phenol, p-cresol, nonanal, and decanal. Fractionation analysis of the solid fraction, post-adsorption from both synthetic and domestic wastewater, indicated that for SG, 77.3%-94% of the total phosphorus (TP) was inorganically bound, while for EGSL, it ranged from 94% to 95.3%. This study represents the first attempt at a proof-of-concept for simultaneous treatment of domestic wastewater and phosphorus recovery using this integrated system.

RESUMO

Fungi with multiple contaminant removal function have rarely been studied. Here, a novel fungal strain Fusarium keratoplasticum FSP1, which was isolated from halophilic granular sludge, is reported for first time to perform simultaneous nitrogen and phosphate removal. The strain showed wide adaptability under C/N ratios of 30-35, salinities of 0 %-3 % (m/v), and pH of 7.5-9.5. The maximum removal rates of ammonium, nitrate and nitrite were 4.43, 4.01 and 2.97 mg N/L/h. The nitrogen balance, enzyme activity and substrate conversion experiments demonstrated a single strain FSP1 can assimilate inorganic nitrogen and convert inorganic nitrogen to gaseous nitrogen through heterotrophic nitrification or aerobic denitrification. About 39 %-42 % of the degraded phosphorus was in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Orthophosphate was the main phosphorus species in the cell, whereas phosphate monoester and diester were in the EPS. The novel strain FSP1 is a potential candidate for wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

A lab-scale gravity-driven bioreactor (GDB) was designed and constructed to evaluate the simultaneous treatment of black liquor and domestic wastewater. The GDB was operated with a mixture of black liquor and domestic wastewater at a ratio of 1:1 and maintained at an average organic loading rate of 1235 mg-COD/L-Day. The wastewater was fed to the primary sedimentation tank at a flow rate of approximately 12 mL/min and subsequently passed through serially connected anaerobic and aerobic chambers with the same flow rate. Each wastewater sample was allowed to undergo a hydraulic retention time of approximately 72 h, ensuring effective treatment. The GDB was actively operated for nine samples (W1-W9) at a weekly frequency. The entire process was conducted within the workstation's ambient temperature range of 30-35 °C to sustain microbial activity and treatment efficiency in an open environment. The performance of the GDB was evaluated in terms of various pollution indicators, including COD, BOD5, lignin removal, TDS, TSS, EC, PO43-, SO42-, microbial load (CFU/mL and MPN index), total nitrogen, and color reduction. The results showed that the GDB achieved promising treatment efficiencies: 84.5% for COD, 71.80% for BOD5, 82.8% for TDS, 100% for TSS, 74.71% for E.C., 67.25% for PO43-, 81% for SO42-, and 69.36% for TN. Additionally, about 80% reduction in lignin content and 57% color reduction were observed after the treatment. The GDB substantially reduced microbial load in CFU/mL (77.98%) and MPN (90%). This study marks the first to report on wastewater treatment from two different sources (black liquor and domestic wastewater) using a simple GDB design. Furthermore, it highlights the GDB's potential as a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient solution for wastewater treatment, with no need for supplementary chemical or physical agents and zero operational costs.

RESUMO

Natural abundance isotope fractionation properties have become the most effective way to explore nitrogen transformations of biological nitrogen removal from wastewater. The migration and transformation characteristics of N and O elements in the shortcut nitrification were analyzed using the N and O dual isotopic fractionation technique. The effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature changes on the performance of shortcut nitrification and isotopic fractionation were investigated. The fractionation characteristics of N and O elements during shortcut nitrification were explored by adjusting DO concentration (0.2-0.4, 1-1.2 and 3-4 mg/L) and temperature (33 ± 1 °C, 25 ± 1 °C and 18 ± 1 °C). Both δ15NNO2 and δ18ONO2 showed a gradually increasing trend with the accumulation of NO2--N, and the fractionation effects induced by temperature were significantly higher than those by DO. The higher the temperature, the more significant the increase in δ15NNO2; the higher the DO, the more remarkable the increase in δ18ONO2, while δ15NNO2: δ18ONO2 was maintained at 0.77-6.45. The 18O-labeled H2O was successfully transferred to NO2--N, and the replacement of O element was as high as 100 %, indicating that DO and H2O simultaneously participated in the shortcut nitrification process. The dynamic changes in isotope fractionation effects can be successfully applied to reveal the performance and mechanism of shortcut nitrification.

RESUMO

The presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in domestic wastewater can potentially indicate socioeconomic status and disease burdens. However, current knowledge is limited to the correlation between specific pharmaceuticals and diseases. This study aims to explore the associations between socioeconomic status, disease burdens, and PPCP levels in domestic wastewater at a national level. Samples from 171 wastewater influents across China were used to measure PPCPs, and the per capita consumption of PPCPs was calculated. Results showed that the 31 targeted PPCPs were widely present in wastewater with varying occurrence characteristics. The mean consumption levels of different PPCPs varied greatly, ranging from 0.03 to 110723.15 µg/d/capita. While there were no significant regional differences in the overall pattern of PPCP consumption, 22 PPCPs showed regional variations between Northern China and Southern China. PPCPs with similar usage purposes exhibited similar distribution patterns. Disease burden (70.1%) was the main factor affecting most PPCP consumption compared to socioeconomic factors (26.4%). Through correlation analyses, specific types of PPCPs were identified that were highly associated with socioeconomic status and disease burdens, such as hypertension-bezafibrate, brucellosis-quinolones, sulfonamides, hepatitis-triclosan, triclocarban, socioeconomic development-fluoxetine, and people's living standards-gemfibrozil. Despite some uncertainties, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between PPCPs in domestic wastewater and socioeconomic status and human health.

RESUMO

The present study demonstrates the potential of an integrated vertical flow-constructed wetland (IVFCW) for simultaneously treating black liquor and domestic wastewater. IVFCW was operated and monitored for 12 samples with the frequency of one sample per week with the following specifications viz,4 L of wastewater, a blend of 1:1 of pulp and paper industry effluent (black liquor BL), and domestic wastewater, was fed daily in a continuous mode with organic loading rate (OLR) of 1230 mg COD/L-Day, at a temperature range of 40-45℃ (natural temperature of the workstation). Valves controlled each chamber's hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 days and flow rate of 10 mL/minute. The IVFCW showed remarkable efficiency in removing various pollutants, including total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS), by 100 % and 83 %, respectively, and organic contaminants such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) by 80 % and 81 %, respectively. Moreover, the IVFCW efficiently reduced nutrients such as sulfates (SO4-2), phosphates (PO4-3), and total nitrogen by about 81 %, 63 %, and 61 %, respectively. The treatment also led to the reduction of lignin content by 83 %. Microbiological analysis revealed a significant reduction in fecal coliforms, and microbial profiling of Typha latifolia roots confirmed the presence of bacteria involved in lignin degradation. Seed germination and seedling survival were found to be negativelyaffected by untreated wastewater in a phytotoxicity study, suggesting that the wastewater's toxic chemicals could be harmful to plant life. This study highlights the effectiveness of IVFCW as a sustainable, economically viable, and resilient wastewater treatment system for mitigating environmental concerns related to the release of untreated wastewater.

RESUMO

This review aims to perform an updated bibliographical survey on the cultivation of microalgae in domestic wastewater with a focus on biotechnological aspects. It was verified that the largest number of researches developed was about cultures in microalgae-bacteria consortium and mixed cultures of microalgae, followed by researches referring to the species Chlorella vulgaris and to the family Scenedesmaceae. According to published studies, these microorganisms are efficient in the biological treatment of domestic wastewater, as well as in the production of high value-added biomass, as they are capable of biosorbing the organic and inorganic compounds present in the culture medium, thus generating cells with high levels of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. These compounds are of great importance for different industry sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, food, and also for agriculture and aquaculture. In addition, biomolecules produced by microalgae can be extracted for several biotechnological applications; however, most studies focus on the production of biofuels, with biodiesel being the main one. There are also other emerging applications that still require more in-depth research, such as the use of biomass as a biofertilizer and biostimulant in the production of bioplastic. Therefore, it is concluded that the cultivation of microalgae in domestic wastewater is a sustainable way to promote effluent bioremediation and produce valuable biomass for the biobased industry, contributing to the development of technology for the green economy.

RESUMO

In this study, detection sensitivity of the conventional flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS) for the determination of manganese (Mn2+) was enhanced by employing a preconcentration method from wastewater samples. Flower-shaped Ni(OH)2 nanomaterials were synthesized and used as sorbent material in preconcentration procedure. With the aim of attaining optimum experimental conditions, effective parameters of extraction method were optimized and these included pH of buffer solution, desorption solvent concentration and volume, mixing type and period, nanoflower amount, and sample volume. The detection limit of the optimized method was determined to be 2.2 µg L-1, and this correlated to about 41-fold enhancement in detection power relative to direct FAAS measurement. Domestic wastewater was used to test the feasibility of the proposed method to real samples by performing spike recovery experiments. The wastewater sample was spiked at four different concentrations of manganese, and the percent recoveries determined were in the range of 95-120%.

RESUMO

Partial nitrification (PN) and high glycogen accumulating metabolism (GAM) activity are the basis for efficient nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal in simultaneous nitrification endogenous denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) systems. However, achieving these processes in practical operations is challenging. This study proposes that light irradiation is a novel strategy to enhance the nutrient removal performance of the SNDPR system with low carbon to nitrogen ratios (C/N of 3.3-4.1) domestic wastewater. Light energy densities (Es) of 55-135 J/g VSS were found to promote the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and GAM, while inhibiting the activity of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and polyphosphate accumulating metabolism (PAM). Long-term exposure to different light patterns at Es of 55-135 J/g VSS revealed that continuous light rapidly achieved PN by inhibiting NOB activity and promoted the growth of glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs), allowing the removal of above 82 % N and below 80 % P. Intermittent light maintained stable PN by inhibiting the activity and growth of NOB and promoted the growth of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) with high GAM activity (Accmulibacer IIC-ii and IIC-iii), allowing the removal of above 82 % N and 95 % P. Flow cytometry and enzyme activity assays showed that light promoted GAM-related enzyme activity and the metabolic activity of partial Accmulibacer II over other endogenous denitrifying bacteria, while inhibiting NOB translation activity. These findings provide a new approach for enhancing nutrient removal, especially for achieving PN and promoting GAM activity, in SNDPR systems treating low C/N ratio domestic wastewater using light irradiation.
