Is Edith Stein's model of the characteristics and behaviour of woman, consonant with woman's physiology and endocrinology?

In this paper we describe the physiology and endocrinology of the women's reproductive system as this refers to the function of the brain and the functioning of Oestrogen and Progesterone Receptors within the brain. We compare this to the description of woman's nature as described by the philosopher and psychologist Edith Stein, who has described the describing specific characteristics and behaviours of women, which fit woman for contributing to the professions as well as the family. We ask whether Stein's description of the characteristics of woman, is in fact consonant with the neuroscience which we have described. We conclude that these two concepts are consonant, in other words, the neuroscience of the female reproductive system and Edith Stein's characteristics of woman are not mutually exclusive and are two concepts which potentially support each other.

How Does Present Neuroscience Support Edith Stein's View on the Appropriateness of Women's Education and the Involvement of Women in the Professions?

Edith Stein has written a great deal about the nature of women and has advocated for the place of women in society and their place in the professions. We have written a series of papers describing the relationship between the findings of neuroscience and the differences between the female and male brains. Here we summarise how our knowledge of these differences underpin Edith Stein's view of the nature of women, and therefore validate Stein's particular view of feminism.

Análise acerca de contágio psíquico e fenômenos de massa segundo Edith Stein / Analysis about psychic contagion and mass phenomenons according toEdith Stein

O presente artigo objetiva analisar os fenômenos de massa em seus aspectos psicológicos a partir das contribuições de E. Stein, considerando o impacto e potenciais consequências destrutivas desses fenômenos como apontados por H. Arendt ao estudar governos totalitários. Após contextualizar o debate acercado tema, ocorrido nas últimas décadas do século XIX e as primeiras do século XX, o trabalho pretende reconstruir os passos da análise fenomenológica conduzida por Stein no ensaio sobre o contágio psíquico que é parte da obra Contribuições para uma fundamentação filosófica da Psicologia e das Ciências do Espirito, publicada em 1922. Nessa análise, a autora descreve em detalhe o dinamismo através do qual o fenômeno do contágio psíquico se inicia e se alastra na vivência pessoal e de grupo. O estudo conduzido comprova a originalidade, atualidade e utilidade acerca dessa contribuição da filósofa alemã, inclusive para a psicologia e psiquiatria contemporâneas

This paper aims to analyze mass phenomena in their psychological aspects through the contributions of E. Stein, considering the impact and potential destructive consequences of such phenomena pointed out by H. Arendt when studying totalitarian governments. After contextualizing the debate on the subject, whichtook place in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the20th century, this work intends to reconstruct the steps of the phenomenological analysis conducted by Stein in the essay on psychic contagion that is part of the work Contributions to a philosophical foundation of Psychology and Sciences of the Spirit, published in 1922. In this analysis, the author describes in detail the dynamism through which the phenomenon of psychic contagion begins and spreads in personal and group experiences. The study conducted proves the originality, relevance and usefulness of this contribution of the German philo-sopher, regarding the contemporary psychology and psychiatry

Em 2021 a Revista Memorandum alcançou o marco de 20 anos de publicação ininterrupta, difundindo no país pesquisas do campo da fenomenologia, memória, história e religião. No mesmo ano, celebramos também 20 anos do início da parceria da filósofa italiana Angela Ales Bello com pesquisadores brasileiros. Como um brinde à dupla comemoração, discutimos neste texto a originalidade da fenomenologia clássica e suas contribuições para as ciências em geral e, em particular, para a psicologia, psicopatologia e estudo das religiões. Também é realizado um resgate de memórias sobre o início do intercâmbio com pesquisadores brasileiros que contribuiu a um só tempo para o desenvolvimento da psicologia fenomenológica no país e para a consolidação da revista Memorandum como periódico de referência nesta área. In 2021, the journal Memorandum reached the milestone of 20 years of uninterrupted publication, disseminating research in the field of phenomenology, memory, history and religion in the country. In the same year, we also celebrated 20 years since the beginning of the partnership between Italian philosopher Angela Ales Bello and Brazilian researchers. As a toast to the double celebration, in this text we discuss the originality of classical phenomenology and its contributions to the sciences in general and, in particular, to psychology, psychopathology and the study of religions. A rescue of memories about the beginning of the exchange with Brazilian researchers is also carried out, which contributed at the same time to the development of phenomenological psychology in the country and to the consolidation of Memorandum as a reference journal in this area. A presente contribuição busca mostrar a formação –acadêmica e humana –recebida por de Edith Stein nos anos de seus estudos universitários apontando sua importância para o que viria a desenvolver depois em obra e na própria existência da filósofa. Inicialmente, se esclarece o que Stein entende por formação. Em seguida, através da escuta empática do que ela mesma relata em escritos autobiográficos e cartas a amigos e colegas, mostra-se o vínculo entre as experiências vividas nas duas cidades onde estudou e os temas enfrentados nas obras redigidas nos anos imediatamente sucessivos à aprovação de sua tese, que voltariam também nas obras mais maduras em várias passagens. The present contribution is intended to demonstrate the importance of Edith Stein’s education, both humanistic and academic, received during her years of university study, for the development of her work and her very existence as a philosopher. Through the empathic listening of what she herself recounts in autobiographical notes and written letters to friends and colleagues, I seek to show the connection between the lived experiences in the two cities where she advances her academic studies and the themes dealt within written papers in the years immediately following her academic studies, which, on several occasions, will return even in her more mature production. All of this after having first clarified what Stein herself understood by education. (AU)

Metodologias ativas nas demandas educacionais contemporâneas: uma discussão à luz dos processos constituintes da singularidade humana em Edith Stein / Active method in contemporary educational demands: a discussion in the light of constitutive processes of human uniqueness in Edith Stein / Metodologías activas en las demandas educativas contemporáneas: una discusión a la luz de los procesos constituyentes de la singularidad humana en Edith Stein

Este artigo tem por objetivo discutir como o uso de metodologias ativas pode se constituir uma resposta às demandas contemporâneas da educação e do conhecimento. Apresenta casos em que a metodologia ativa foi aplicada em alunos universitários, comenta os resultados e os analisa sob o ponto de vista do desenvolvimento de habilidades socioemocionais. Discute o tema e as experiências apresentadas, utilizando a filosofia de Edith Stein, procurando relacionar o desenvolvimento de habilidades socioemocionais e a educação por valores com a busca de humanização dos processos de aprendizagem. Os resultados apontam que o uso de metodologias ativas numa perspectiva de desenvolvimento socioemocional pode contribuir para a constituição da singularidade, aspecto fundamental, segundo Edith Stein, da estrutura da pessoa humana.

This article aims to discuss how the use of active methods can constitute a response to contemporary educational and knowledge demands. It presents cases in which active method was applied to university students, it presents the results and analyzes them from the point of view of the development of social-emotional abilities. It discusses the theme and the experiences presented, using the philosophy of Edith Stein, relating the development of socialemotional skills and the value education, searching for humanizations of learning processes. The results announce that the use of active method from the perspective of social-emotional development can contribute to the uniqueness’ constitution, a fundamental aspect, according to Edith Stein, of the structure of the human person.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar cómo el uso de metodologías activas puede constituirse una respuesta a las exigencias contemporáneas de la educación y del conocimiento. Presenta casos en los que se aplicó la metodología activa en los estudiantes universitarios, comenta los resultados y los analiza desde el punto de vista del desarrollo de las capacidades socioemocionales. Discute el tema y las experiencias presentadas, utilizando la filosofía de Edith Stein, buscando relacionar el desarrollo de las habilidades socioemocionales y la educación por valores con la búsqueda de la humanización de los procesos de aprendizaje. Los resultados indican que el uso de metodologías activas en una perspectiva socioemocional de desarrollo puede contribuir a la constitución de la singularidad, un aspecto fundamental, según Edith Stein, de la estructura de la persona humana.

Trauma and intersubjectivity: the phenomenology of empathy in PTSD.

With my research, I wish to contribute to the discussion of post-traumatic psychopathologies from a phenomenological perspective. The main question I pursue is to what extent PTSD can be understood as an intersubjective psychopathology and which implications this view might have. In this paper, I argue that the mode of perception allowing for intersubjective experience is vulnerable to disruptions through traumatic events. I begin with a short elaboration on what intersubjectivity entails before proceeding to illustrate how it can be impaired. Then, I focus on the concept of empathy as a mode of perception: I propose that due to a disruption of the ability to empathize an individual suffering from PTSD may cease to experience the other as another subject that offers possibilities for interaction. The traumatized individual is thus unable to establish meaningful connections with others. I offer some implications this view might entail for thinking about trauma treatment.

Conjugality: A Reading According to Edith Stein´s Notion of Community / Conjugalidade: Uma Leitura a Partir da Noção de Comunidade em Edith Stein

Abstract From the book Contribuciones a la fundamentación filosófica de la psicología y de las ciencias del espíritu,Edith Stein introduces intersubjectivity as a requirement for constituting the "I" and the "We". Accordingly, her definition of community enables us to understand conjugality in its constitutive aspects, highlighting it as one of the spaces of subjectivity formation, reminding us of themes like: self-formation, creativity, ethics, otherness, openness and individual and collective responsibility. The Stein's analyses, from the concept of person, also clarify that the formation process, specifically correlated to identifying and repeating intra-family and social models, is governed by the laws of sense and not limited to the psychological sphere, showing the possibility of self-configuration and reconfiguration of "oneself" and of conjugality.

Resumo A partir do livro Contribuiciones a la fundamentación filosófica de la psicologia de las ciencias del espíritu, Edith Stein apresenta a intersubjetividade como exigência para a constituição do eu e do nós. Destarte, sua definição de comunidade permite uma compreensão da conjugalidade em seus aspectos constitutivos, destacando-a como um dos espaços de formação de subjetividades, conduzindo a temas como: autoformação, criatividade, ética, alteridade, abertura e responsabilidade individual e coletiva. Suas análises, a partir do conceito de pessoa, também clarificam que o processo de formação, especificamente correlacionado à identificação e repetição dos modelos intrafamiliares e sociais, é regido pelas leis de sentido e não reduzido à esfera psíquica, exibindo a possibilidade de autoconfiguração e reconfiguração de "si mesmo" e da conjugalidade.

Se para a fenomenologia de Husserl o papel do pensamento medieval não é essencial, inteiramente diferente é o caso da filosofia madura de Edith Stein, por ela intitulada filosofia do ser, em uma conjunção explícita de fenomenologia e metafísica. Iniciando, então, por um breve estudo da relação entre Husserl e formas medievais do pensamento, este artigo concentra-se no caso específico de Edith Stein e sua recepção de autores como Anselmo de Cantuária e Tomás de Aquino, entre outros, concluindo pela sua investigação sobre o que torna possível a afeccionabilidade ou a afectibilidade, quer dizer, a condição de possibilidade da síntese passiva.

If for Husserl's Phenomenology the role of medieval thought is not essential, it is entirely different from Edith Stein's mature philosophy, which she calls philosophy of being, in an explicit conjunction of Phenomenology and Metaphysics. So, starting by a brief study on the relationship between Husserl and medieval forms of thought, this article focuses on the specific case of Edith Stein and her reception of authors such as Anselm of Canterbury and Thomas Aquinas, among others, concluding by her investigation on what makes affectionability or affection possible, that is, the condition of possibility of passive synthesis.

Si para la fenomenología de Husserl el papel del pensamiento medieval no es esencial, completamente diferente es el caso de la filosofía madura de Edith Stein, por ella intitulada filosofía del ser, en una conjunción explícita de fenomenología y metafísica. Empezando, entonces, por un breve estudio de la relación entre Husserl y formas medievales de pensamiento, este artículo se centra en el caso específico de Edith Stein y su recepción de autores como Anselmo de Cantuaria y Tomás de Aquino, entre otros, concluyendo por su investigación sobre lo que hace posible la afeccionabilidad o la afectibilidad, es decir, la condición de posibilidad de la síntesis pasiva.

Resumo Considerando que o tema da autenticidade tem se tornado um importante referencial ético da sociedade contemporânea, discutimos neste trabalho as contribuições de Edith Stein para a compreensão do processo de formação da personalidade autêntica, com especial atenção à maneira como a corporeidade participa dessa dinâmica. Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, em que examinamos alguns textos steinianos que abordam diretamente o tema da estrutura da pessoa e seu processo formativo, especialmente O problema da empatia, Sobre a ideia de formação e Potência e ato, respectivamente com originais dos anos de 1917, 1930 e 1931. Discutido como processo de formação da personalidade e como princípio de individuação, Stein acentua a necessidade de considerarmos a pessoa em ato, como meio de conhecermos sua autêntica individualidade, mesmo havendo limites para esse conhecimento.

Résumé Considérant que le thème de l'authenticité est devenu un cadre éthique important pour la société contemporaine, cet article examine les contributions d'Edith Stein à la compréhension du processus de formation de la personnalité authentique, avec une attention particulière à la manière dont la corporéité participe à cette dynamique. C'est une recherche bibliographique dans laquelle sont examinés certains textes de Stein qui abordent directement le thème de la structure de la personne et son processus de formation, en particulier, Le problème de l'empathie; Concernant l'idée de formation et Puissance et Acte, avec des originaux des années 1917, 1930 et 1931, respectivement. Discuté en tant que processus de formation de la personnalité et principe d'individuation, Stein insiste sur la nécessité de considérer la personne en acte, afin de connaître son individualité authentique, même s'il y a des limites à cette connaissance.

Resumen Considerando que el tema de la autenticidad se ha convertido en un importante referencial ético de la sociedad contemporánea, discutimos en este trabajo las contribuciones de Edith Stein para la comprensión del proceso de formación de la personalidad auténtica, con especial atención a la manera como la corporeidad participa en esa dinámica. Se trata de una investigación bibliográfica donde examinamos algunos textos steinianos que abordan directamente el tema de la estructura de la persona y su proceso formativo, especialmente El problema de la empatía; Sobre la idea de formación y Potencia y acto, respectivamente con originales de los años 1917, 1930 y 1931. Discutido como proceso de formación de la personalidad y como principio de individuación, Stein subraya la necesidad de considerar a la persona en acto, como medio de conocer su auténtica individualidad, aun habiendo límites para ese conocimiento.

Abstract Considering that the theme of authenticity has become an important ethical framework for contemporary society, this study discusses the contributions of Edith Stein to understand the process of authentic personality formation, with special attention to the way that corporeality participates in this dynamic. This is a bibliographical research, in which some texts from Stein are examined, which directly address the theme of structure of people and their formative process, especially, The problem of empathy, Concerning the idea of formation and Potency and act, with originals from the years 1917, 1930 and 1931, respectively. Discussed as a process of personality formation and as a principle of individuation, Stein emphasizes the need to consider the person in act, in order to know their authentic individuality, even though there are limits to this knowledge.

Spiritual care of the woman physician: Insights from Edith Stein and the Catholic tradition.

In the face of physician stress, burn-out, divorce, and suicide, the spiritual care of the Catholic woman physician must be addressed. Employing the insights of Edith Stein and the Catholic tradition, this article presents both theoretical propositions and practical applications regarding the three primary spheres of the woman physician's life: the spiritual, the familial, and the professional. Since woman's ultimate vocation is union with God through self-gift, prayer must occupy a central place in her life. Because she is wife and mother, family relationships must be given priority over the professional activity that is also her inestimable gift to humanity.

The woman physician as antidote to the ills of modern medicine.

This article, drawing on the work of Edith Stein, reflects on the feminine aspects of the medical profession, specifically attention to the whole person and personal accompaniment. It presents these feminine aspects, in light of the mechanistic, highly specialized, and often impersonal ethos of modern medicine, as a needed corrective to such an ethos. Finally, this thesis is illustrated with an example from physician Victoria Sweet.

La empatía como punto de partida para estructurar la ética en Edith Stein / The empathy as a starting point for structuring ethics in Edith Stein

Desde la aproximación fenomenológica que realiza Edith Stein para la comprensión de la estructura óntica y dinamismo de la acción propiamente humana, se puede considerar la empatía como un acto propio de la persona, el cual está presente en la constitución del individuo psicofísico, y es desde donde se establece el dinamismo perfectivo de ésta. Dando lugar así, a la comprensión de la persona como un ser-con-los-demás, desde donde se establecerán las bases para una ética de la persona considerada en su ser relacional, eludiendo cualquier posible individualismo. La persona al ser una estructura abierta, abierta hacia dentro y hacia fuera, hacia sí mismo y hacia el otro, permite la fundamentación de un ethos relacional, del Yo-Tú, del que emerge el nosotros, y portanto una comprensión más acabada del bien común.(AU)

From the phenomenological approach that Edith Stein proposed, for understanding the ontological structure and dynamism of human action, empathy can be considered as an act of the person, which is present in the constitution of the Psycho-physical Individual,and establish the perfective dynamism of the person. Leading to the understanding of the person as a being - with -others, from where establishes the basis of an ethic that consider the individual as a relational being, avoiding any possible individualism. The person that is an open structure, open inward and outward, toward himself and toward the other, allows the foundation of a relational ethos, and ethos of the I-Thou, from which emerges the 'us‟, and a better understanding of the common good.(AU)

A formação humana em contexto de violência: uma compreensão clínica a partir da Fenomenologia de Edith Stein / Human formation in a context of violence: a clinical understanding from the standpoint of Edith Steins

Este estudo, baseado na Fenomenologia de Edith Stein, teve por objetivo compreender as vivências fundamentais de pessoas que vivem em um contexto marcado pela violência, bem como investigar as repercussões dessas vivências em seu processo formativo. A pesquisa foi realizada no bairro do Uruguai, em Salvador (BA), região conhecida como Alagados. A apreensão das vivências ocorreu pelos registros de um diário de bordo e por 15 entrevistas abertas com os moradores. A análise foi realizada em dois momentos. No primeiro, selecionamos 4 entrevistas (2 homens e 2 mulheres) e realizamos uma análise individual dos participantes, tomando como referência as dimensões constitutivas da pessoa segundo Edith Stein (vivências psicofísicas, espirituais e interpessoais, aspectos éticos e religiosos). No segundo, selecionamos, das 15 entrevistas, vivências significativas para os participantes do ponto de vista formativo e as agrupamos em 8 vivências fundamentais: 1) vivência do improviso (da urgência da vida); 2) vivência da morte; 3) vivência da chaga; 4) vivência de violência; 5) vivência da solidariedade; 6) vivência da periferia; 7) vivência da maternidade e 8) vivência da religiosidade. A análise individual dos 4 participantes possibilitou identificar um movimento formativo comum, caracterizado por vivências psicofísicas de forte intensidade que culminaram com a experiência do limite pessoal a partir de uma situação de morte eminente. Esta última, por sua vez, motivou a vivência da escuta de si e do reconhecimento de um apelo interior de realização (núcleo pessoal), dando origem ao propósito de dar novo rumo à própria vida. Entretanto, a concretização desse propósito não se deu de modo automático, mas foi marcado por momentos de luta interior entre essa decisão (própria da dimensão espiritual) e o movimento psíquico reativo de busca de bem-estar e segurança, que apontava para a permanência da pessoa no status quo. The research was conducted in Salvador, Bahia, in the Uruguai neighborhood, an area known as Alagados. The gathering of the lived experiences was done by means of a daily journal and 15 open ended interviews with inhabitants of the area. The analysis was executed in two moments. At first, we selected four interviews (2 men and 2 women) and did an individual analysis of the participants, in the light of the constitutive dimensions of the person according to Edith Stein (psycho-physical, spiritual and interpersonal lived experiences, religious and ethical aspects). For the second moment we selected, from among the 15 interviews, meaningful lived experiences for the participants from a formative standpoint, and grouped them according to 8 fundamental lived experiences: 1) the lived experience of improvisation (the urgency of life); 2) the lived experience of death; 3) the lived experience of woundedness; 4) the lived experience of violence; 5) the lived experience of solidarity; 6) the lived experience of the periphery; 7) the lived experience of maternity; and 8) the lived experience of religiosity. The individual analysis of the 4 participants allowed us to identify a common formative movement, featuring high intensity psycho-physical lived experiences which culminated in the experience of personal limits in the face of a situation of imminent death. This latter experience, in its turn, led to the experience of the listening of the self and the recognition of an interior appeal towards fulfillment (the personal nucleus), originating the purpose of giving life a new direction. O cuidado como uma ética: contribuições de Edith Stein e Donald Winnicott / Care as an ethic: contributions of Edith Stein and Donald Winnicott

As relações de cuidado nos relacionamentos intersubjetivos humanos é um fator significativo para promover o crescimento e o desenvolvimento dos seres humanos como sujeitos éticos. Através da análise de um fragmento do livro Os miseráveis do escritor francês Vitor Hugo, busca-se através do uso dos conceitos de Devoção de Donald Winnicott e de entropatia de Edith Stein, realizar articulações, no intuito de mostrar o papel desses dois conceitos na estruturação do cuidado estabelecido na relação entre Monsenhor Benvindo e Jean Valjean, personagens do referido livro, para a mudança e transformação pessoal deste último, em sua trajetória após esse encontro. Primeiramente tanto o conceito de entropatia de Edith Stein, quanto o de devoção de Winnicott, são apresentados dentro dos enquadramentos teóricos de ambos os autores para que ambos estejam contextualizados na cadeia de pensamento de seus pensadores, para então, posteriormente serem vinculados a discussão da passagem do livro analisada. O objetivo da pesquisa foi destacar a importância do cuidado tomado como uma ética por Monsenhor Benvindo na relação com Jean Valjean em seu encontro com ele no fragmento do livro apresentado e o quanto o cuidado tomado como uma ética, ou seja, uma práxis de vida nas relações com o outro, pode ser determinante e transformador na história pessoal dos indivíduos com a qual se tem contato. Sendo este aspecto exemplificado pelos rumos posteriores que toma o personagem Jean Valjean em sua trajetória no livro após ser cuidado pelo bispo. A metodologia usada para realizar as discussões necessárias foi o método dialógico do Linguista russo Mikhail Bakhtin, onde sua noção de que todo texto ou discurso são inerentemente dialógico e polifônico serviu de referencia para se colocar em relação o fragmento do livro com os conceitos de entropatia e de devoção. Care relationships in human intersubjective relationships is significant to promote the growth and development of humans as ethical subjects factor. By analyzing a fragment of the book "Les Miserables" by French writer Victor Hugo, is sought through the use of the concepts of "Devotion" Donald Winnicott and "entropatia" Edith Stein, Lobbying, in order to show the role of these two concepts in the structure of care established in the relationship between Bishop Benvindo and Jean Valjean, characters of that book, for change and personal transformation of the latter in his career after this meeting. First both the concept of entropatia Edith Stein, as the devotion of Winnicott, are presented within the theoretical frameworks of both authors for both are contextualized in the imagination of their thinkers chain, and then later the discussion of the passage being linked book analyzed. The research objective was to highlight the importance of the care taken by Monsignor Benvindo as an ethical relationship with the Jean Valjean in his meeting with him in the book fragment presented and how much care taken as an ethical, ie a way of living in relationships with each other, can be decisive and transformative personal history of individuals with whom he has contact. This aspect being exemplified by the subsequent course that takes the character Jean Valjean in his career after being in the book carefully by the bishop.
