RESUMO

[Purpose] To investigate the effects of exercise using a modified elastic band with a coconut shell on leg muscle strength and balance in older adults. [Participants and Methods] The study consisted of 30 participants aged 60 years and older. The participants were randomly assigned to either the exercise (n=15) or control groups (n=15). The exercise group used a modified elastic band with a coconut shell three days a week for four weeks. Both groups received a single educational session on fall prevention after a baseline assessment. The Functional Reach Test (FRT) and Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) were used to assess balance, respectively. The 30-second chair stand test (30CST) was also used to measure leg strength. All outcome parameters were measured at the beginning of the study, immediately after a single exercise session, and after four weeks of exercise. [Results] The FRT and 30CST significantly increased in the exercise group after four weeks of exercise. The TUG significantly decreased in the exercise group after completing the program. [Conclusion] This study demonstrated that exercise using a modified elastic band with a coconut shell could effectively improve leg muscle strength and balance in older adults.

Background: Elastic band exercises can improve bone density, muscle quality, and body fat in elderly patients with Sarcopenic Obesity Syndrome (SOS), a common diagnosis. Encouraging this exercise can bring significant benefits. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search until April 1, 2023, covering UpToDate, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. The analysis focused on osteosarcopenic obesity and resistance training, involving four randomized controlled trials with 108 participants. After collecting key information, the methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale. Outcome quality was graded using the GRADE technique, and bias risk was evaluated using the Cochrane Bias Risk tool. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4. Results: After a 12-week elastic band resistance training regimen, the meta-analysis revealed significant improvement. The study focused on age-related osteoporosis and obesity in older women, evaluating parameters such as bone mineral density (BMD) (P < 0.001, I2 = 98 %, CI: 0.39-0.71), decreased body fat percentage (BFP) (CI: -262.55-260.11, P < 0.001, I2 = 100 %), and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) (P < 0.001, I2 = 98 %, CI: 0.31-0.71). T-score (P < 0.001, I2 = 97 %, CI: -2.85-1.27), Time to Chair Rise (TCR) (P < 0.001, I2 = 100 %, CI: -24.28-23.44), and Gait Speed (GS) (P < 0.001, I2 = 100 %, CI: 9.84-9.88) were also evaluated. Conclusion: Following a 12-week elastic band resistance exercise regimen, older women showed notable improvements, particularly those with age-related osteoporosis and obesity.

BACKGROUND: For small gastric subepithelial tumours originating from the muscularis propria, there is no uniform standard for selecting the best endoscopic resection method. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of endoscopic snare resection with a transparent cap (ESR-C) and endoscopic snare resection with an elastic band (ESR-EB) for small gastric subepithelial tumours originating from the muscularis propria to determine which method is more suitable for these tumours. METHODS: The data from small gastric subepithelial tumours originating from the muscularis propria treated from Jan 2020 to Dec 2022 were collected. A total of 34 eligible patients were enrolled. Sixteen of these patients were treated with ESR-C, and eighteen were treated with ESR-EB. The general clinical characteristics, tumour location, tumour size,growth pattern,operation time, complete resection rate, and complication rate were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: There was no difference in age, sex, tumour location, tumour size, growth pattern, or histological diagnosis after resection (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in operation time, complete resection rate, or follow-up time (p > 0.05). Eight patients (50.5%) in the ESR-C group had complications (6 perforations and 2 bleeding), and 2 (11.11%) in the ESR-EB group had complications (2 perforations). There were significant differences between the two groups (p = 0.037). All perforations were successfully treated. No recurrence or metastasis was observed in either group during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Both ESR-C and ESR-EB are effective and safe in treating small gastric subepithelial tumours originating from the muscularis propria. However, ESR-EB can significantly reduce the incidence of complications. ESR-EB is likely a better option for small gastric subepithelial tumours originating from the muscularis propria.

Nitrogen functionalisation of graphene is studied with the help ofab initioelectronic structure methods. Both static formation energies and energy barriers obtained from nudged elastic band calculations are considered. If carbon defects are present in the graphene structure, low energy barriers on the order of 0.5 eV were obtained to incorporate nitrogen atoms inside the sheet. For defect-free graphene, much larger barriers in the range of 3.70-4.38 eV were found, suggesting an external energy source is required to complete this type of incorporation.

Existing elastic band materials for sports rehabilitation equipment have some deficiencies in strength, flexibility and durability, and need to be further improved. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to modify elastic bands using a conjugated material, carbon nanotubes, to improve the strength, flexibility and durability of elastic bands. In this paper, conjugated carbon nanotubes were prepared, and their elastic bands were strengthened and toughened by solvent, dispersant and functionalizer respectively under tensile testing machine and scanning electron microscope. Then the application effect of elastic band modified by conjugated materials in exercise rehabilitation was analyzed experimentally. The experimental results show that the strength of the elastic bands modified with carbon nanotubes is in the optimal range for sports rehabilitation, and the elongation at break of the test elastic band toughness index was also higher than that before modification, all of which were more than 90%. The recovery time of the elastic band after modification was long; the elastic retention rate was high, and the deformation was not easy. The satisfaction rate of different grades of elastic bands after modification was particularly high, which was not less than 95%. The research and application of elastic band modification based on conjugated material carbon nanotubes is very important for training and treatment in sports rehabilitation, which can provide better support and stability.

The surprisingly high catalytic activity of gold has been known to the heterogeneous catalysis community since the mid-1980s. Significant efforts have been directed towards improving the reactivity of these surfaces towards important industrial reactions. One such strategy is the introduction of small amounts of other metals to create Au-based surface alloys. In this work, we investigated the synergistic effect of the Pt doping of a Au(111) surface on decreasing the activation barrier of the methanol dehydrogenation elementary step within first-principles density functional theory. To this end, we constructed several models of Pt-doped Au(111) surfaces, including a full Pt overlayer and monolayer. The effect of Pt surface doping was then investigated via the computation of the adsorption energies of the various chemical species involved in the catalytic step and the estimation of the activation barriers of methanol dehydrogenation. Both the electronic and strain effects induced by Pt surface doping substantially lowered the activation energy barrier of this important elementary reaction step. Moreover, in the presence of preadsorbed atomic oxygen, Pt surface doping could be used to reduce the activation energy for methanol dehydrogenation to as low as 0.1 eV.

Background: During the repetitive execution of the swimming strokes, the muscles responsible for the internal rotations of the shoulders tend to become stronger compared to the muscles that oppose these movements. The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of a strengthening program for the shoulder rotator muscles using elastic band exercises in a diagonal Kabat pattern (D2 for flexion) in swimmers, to develop an effective, quick and easy-to-implement protocol for preventive training routines. Methods: A randomized controlled trial design was carried out. Internal and external rotation range of movement, isometric strength of the muscles responsible for internal and external rotation of the shoulder, scapular movements, was measured at the beginning of the study and after 8 weeks post-intervention. A total of 22 male swimmers participated in the study and were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 11) or a control group (n = 11). The experimental group underwent a 8-week shoulder-strength program using elastic bands, while the control group focused on aquatic training. Results: The strength-training program resulted in an improvement in the isometric strength of the muscles responsible for external rotation and a better balance between the shoulder rotator muscles in the experimental group. However, these improvements have not been significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The strengthening exercise program showed minimal improvement in shoulder rotation strength and range of motion. These findings suggest that the prescribed shoulder-strengthening exercise could be a quick-beneficial dry-land training option to improve external rotation shoulder strength or range of motion, but more studies with larger sample sizes and more weeks of treatment are needed to determine the efficacy of this protocol.

Background: Explosive and fast body movements, sprints, jumps and quick changes of direction, which are characteristic of the football training, place considerable strain on the hamstring muscles. Due to the high occurrence of hamstring injuries, new preventive strategies are required that focus on high-velocity training. The purpose was to assess the effectiveness of high-velocity elastic-band training in reducing the occurrence of hamstring injuries in football players. Methods: Male football players from 15 teams (n = 319) playing in national competitions participated in this study. The players were involved in a 5-week exercise period in either the intervention group (INT) or the control group (CON), with a follow-up period of ∼4 months where hamstring injuries and exposure time were recorded. The INT group had two to three sessions per week of elastic-band training with low-load, high-velocity leg curls while lying prone; the CON group performed self-paced football-specific drills. Results: The incidence rate of hamstring injuries was 6.5% in the INT group (8 out of 123 players) and 9.2% in the CON group (18 out of 196 players). Although the INT group showed almost 1/3 reduction in hamstring injury incidence compared to the CON group, the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Moreover, no differences (p > 0.05, odds ratio [OR] = trivial-to-small) in distribution between the groups were found in hamstring injury characteristics (leg dominance and mechanism) except for the distribution of injuries that occurred during matches or training (p = 0.036; OR = 6.14, moderate). Conclusion: The program of high-velocity elastic-band training did not prove to be effective in preventing hamstring muscle injuries in football players despite displaying some positive indications that could be considering when creating injury prevention programs.

The nudged elastic band (NEB) method has been widely employed for reaction path (RP) finding; however, certain NEB calculations do not converge to the minimum energy paths (MEPs) because of the occurrence of kinks, which are caused by the free bending of bands. Thus, we propose an extension of the NEB method, called the nudged elastic stiffness band (NESB) method, which adds the stress of stiffness using a beam theory. Here we present results from three examples: the NFK potential, the RPs of the Witting reaction, and finding saddle points for a set of five chemical reaction benchmarks. The results showed that the NESB method has three advantages: to decrease the number of iterations, shrink the length of the pathways from reducing unnecessary fluctuations, and find TS structures by converging to paths close to the MEPs for systems that have sharp curves on the MEPs.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the combination of elastic band resistance exercise (EBRE) with modified Thai yoga on the alleviation of blood glucose and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Forty-two patients with T2DM were enrolled and allocated to an exercise or control group (n=21/group). The exercise group participated in EBRE combination with modified Thai yoga for 40 min, 5 days/wk, for 12 consecutive weeks. Blood glucose, oxidative stress markers, antioxidants, pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and airway inflammation were measured before and after the 12 weeks. The results showed that the exercise group had a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin. Moreover, T2DM patients in the exercise group showed a significant reduction in plasma malondialdehyde, while superoxide dismutase and catalase were significantly increased. The exercise group also observed a significant improvement in pulmonary function; forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow, and forced midexpiratory flow as well as respiratory muscle strength. Interestingly, the combination of EBRE with modified Thai yoga markedly improved airway inflammation through the reduction in fractional exhaled nitric oxide. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the combination of EBRE with modified Thai yoga improves blood glucose, oxidative stress, antioxidants, pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, and airway inflammation in T2DM patients. Hence, it could be considered as a possible exercise program for T2DM patients.

A 16-year-old girl developed severe acute periodontitis involving the maxillary central incisor and lateral incisor caused by elastic bands. Periodontal surgical interventions and orthodontic adjustment achieved good outcomes which were maintained for 7 years. This report demonstrates the criticality of correct diagnosis, early periodontal surgery, and interdisciplinary approach.

The nudged elastic band (NEB) method is utilized to find reaction paths (RPs) using discretized intermediate structures called "images" between a reactant and a product. In fact, NEB calculations do not always converge because of the bent of RPs. Mathematically, more images are needed for complex curves, and here, we focused on the curvature. In this study, we propose a new method for calculating the curvature of the RPs as well as a method for weighting the spring constant of the NEB with the curvature, which we named the curvature weighted NEB (CW-NEB) method. In addition, we will propose the CW-NEB method with the climbing image (CI) method (CW-CI-NEB). To show the efficiency of our method, calculations for the ene-reaction of the CW-CI-NEB method were performed and compared with those of the CI-NEB methods. The CW-CI-NEB methods converged in shorter iteration times than the CI-NEB calculation, which was found by gathering the bent of RPs.

The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in neuromuscular performance between variable resistance training and constant resistance training within complex training. Twenty-one well-trained collegiate basketball players were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (variable resistance training) or a control group (constant resistance training) and completed a twice weekly training program over an 8-week period. Training programs were the same except that the experimental group included variable resistance via elastic bands (40% of the total load). Maximum strength, vertical jump, horizontal jump, and sprint performance were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Both groups demonstrated significant increases in the back squat 1RM (experimental group +36.5% and control group +32.3%, both p < 0.001), countermovement jump (experimental group +12.9%, p = 0.002 and control group +5.6%, p = 0.02), and squat jump performance (experimental group +21.4% and control group +12.9%, both p < 0.001), whereas standing broad jump performance improved only in the experimental group (+2.9%, p = 0.029). Additionally, the experimental group showed significant improvement in the squat jump (p = 0.014) compared with the control group. However, no statistically significant differences were found between groups for countermovement jump (p = 0.06) and sprint performance at 10 m (p = 0.153) and 20 m (p = 0.076). We may conclude that both training modalities showed similar improvements in maximum strength. Performing variable resistance training within a complex training program is more efficient to enhance selective power performance in well-trained collegiate basketball players.

Thanks to their strong maneuverability and high load capacity, car-like robots with non-holonomic constraints are often used in logistics to improve efficiency. However, it is difficult to plan a safe and smooth optimal path in real time on the restricted narrow roads of the logistics park. To solve this problem, an optimization-based motion planning method inspired by the Timed-Elastic-Band algorithm is proposed, called Narrow-Roads-Timed-Elastic-Band (NRTEB). Three optimization modules are added to the inner and outer workflow of the Timed-Elastic-Band framework. The simulation results show that the proposed method achieves safe reversing planning on narrow roads while the jerk of the trajectory is reduced by 72.11% compared to the original method. Real-world experiments reveal that the proposed method safely and smoothly avoids dynamic obstacles in real time when navigating forward and backward. The motion planner provides a safer and smoother trajectory for car-like robots on narrow roads in real time, which greatly enhances the safety, robustness and reliability of the Timed-Elastic-Band planner in logistics parks.

Introduction: This study investigated the effect of Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise on muscle mass and muscle function in patients with prediabetes. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial designed in parallel (Chinese Clinical Trial Registry: ChiCTR2000039049). Participants with prediabetes (n = 47) were randomly divided into control (n = 21, 63.5 ± 4.7 years,16 females) and exercise (n = 26, 62.0 ± 5.0 years, 20 females) groups. The former maintained their original lifestyle, and the latter received Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise five times a week for 6 months. All the outcome measures were assessed immediately at baseline, after 3- and 6-month intervention. Results: After 6-month of the exercise, the body weight, body mass index, leg fat mass, gynoid fat mass, and total body fat mass in exercise group were significantly decreased compared with those at baseline (p < 0.05). Compared with those at baseline, total lean mass decreased at 3 and 6 months in both groups. The total muscle mass loss in the exercise group was always less than that in control group at all time periods, but the difference was not statistically significant. Handgrip strength, gait speed, reaction time, leg power, eye-closed and single-legged standing, and sit-and-reach were significantly improved for the exercise group at 3 and 6 months (p < 0.05). Gait speed and reaction time between both groups at 3 and 6 months were significant different (p < 0.05), and leg power at 6 months (p < 0.05). Compared with baseline, the reaction time of control group at six months was significantly improved (p < 0.05), and no other significant changes were observed. Compared with those at baseline, fasting plasma glucose, 2-h post-meal plasma glucose, fasting insulin, total cholesterol, and insulin resistance index in exercise group gradually decreased, and growth hormone was gradually increased with significance at 6 months (p < 0.05). 25-hydroxyvitamin D gradually and significantly increased in both groups at 3 and 6 months (p < 0.05). But two groups' testosterone levels weren't significant change. Conclusion: Yijinjing combined with elastic band exercise can substantially reduce the body weight and body fat content of middle-aged and elderly patients with Prediabetes, improve muscle function and growth hormone secretion, and delay muscle mass reduction and diabetes development. This study examined the effect of a 10-week programme of strength training with elastic band (STEB) on fitness components in young female handball players. Twenty-six young female handball players (aged 15.8 ± 0.2 years) from the same club participated in this study. They were randomly assigned between experimental (EG; n = 13) and control (CG; n = 13) groups. The EG performed the STEB, replacing some handball-specific drills in the regular handball training. The CG followed the regular handball training (i.e., mainly technical-tactical drills, small sided and simulated games, and injury prevention drills). Two-way analyses of variance were used to assess: handgrip; back extensor strength; medicine ball throw; 30 m sprint times; Modified Illinois change-of-direction (Illinois-MT); four jump tests: squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), countermovement jump with arm swing (CMJA) and five-jump test (5JT); static (Stork test) and dynamic balance (Y Balance Test); and repeated sprint T-test (RSTT). Results revealed significant gains in handgrip - right (p < 0.001, d = 1.75: large), handgrip - left (p < 0.001, d = 2.52: large), back extensor (p < 0.001, d = 2.01: large), and medicine ball throw (p = 0.002, d = 0.95: large) with EG compared to the CG. The EG also demonstrated greater improvement in sprint performance over 20 m (Δ = 10.6%, p = 0.001, d = 1.07: large) and 30 m (Δ = 7.2%, p < 0.0001, d = 1.56: large) compared to the CG. The EG showed better Illinois-MT (Δ = 5.6%, p = 0.034, d = 0.62: medium) compared to the CG. Further, EG posted significant improvements in the SJ (Δ = 17.3%, p = 0.048, d = 0.58: medium), CMJ (Δ = 17.7%, p = 0.017 d = 0.71: medium), and CMJA (Δ = 16.3%, p = 0.019, d = 0.69: medium) compared to the CG. Similarly, the EG exhibited significant improvement in RSTT best time [p = 0.025, d = 0.66 (medium)], RSTT mean time [p = 0.019, d = 0.69 (medium)] and RSTT total time [p = 0.019, d = 0.69 (medium)] compared to the CG. In conclusion, the 10-week STEB improved the physical abilities in young female handball players.

To improve the transition state (TS) search capability in complex chemical environments, AMK_Mountain is constructed based on the automated reaction mechanisms and kinetics (AutoMeKin) package. AMK_Mountain does not distinguish the reaction type of the TSs, which is beneficial to obtaining a more comprehensive reaction mechanism. In this study, the first step of the alkaline hydrolysis process of nitrocellulose monomer was adopted as the research object, and 730 possible initial configurations are constructed and 22 TSs pass high-level calculations. Energy difference and interaction region indicator reveal that the first step of alkaline hydrolysis is mainly the combination of nitrogen-containing functional groups at the positions α and ß with hydroxide anions, followed by the formation of nitric acid and the further loss of protons to form nitrate. Overall, in combination with GFN2 -xTB and ORCA, the AMK_Mountain technique provides a reliable method for the location of the TSs in complex environments.

Much research has been done on reactions of a single CO2 molecule with a graphene surface. In this paper, density functional theory calculations are used to investigate the adsorption and reaction of double CO2 on the surface of single vacancy (SV) and divacancy (DV) defect graphene. The study found that due to the mutual repulsion between CO2 and the size of the SV defect, it is difficult for two CO2 molecular to be adsorbed directly above the SV defect at the same time. Regardless of SV or DV, the adsorption of the first CO2 in the defect center will have a beneficial effect on the adsorption of the second CO2. In addition, the transition state calculation of the CO2 reaction on the DV plane was carried out, and the adsorption behavior was analyzed and studied. This in-depth study is helpful to the understanding of the reaction behavior of CO2 on graphene, and further exploration in the direction of the effective application of graphene to the reaction and adsorption of CO2. Our work explores the adsorption behavior of CO2 on graphene surfaces, the physical and chemical adsorption of double CO2 at the defect was studied and analyzed.

With continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, strain sensors have attracted widespread attention. In this work, a novel high-performance wearable strain sensor is prepared by using a kind of ultra-stretchable, super-hydrophobic and high-conductive composite. The preparation process is as follows, i.e., using common elastic band (EB) as the polymer matrix, nano carbon black (CB) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as mixed conductive filler, and then modified by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to obtain the PDMS/(CB + CNTs)/EB composite for assembling assemble flexible wearable strain sensors. Experimental results reveal the following excellent properties: 1) The composite exhibits excellent mechanical properties and super-hydrophobicity, i.e., the tensile strength is up to 996.5%, and the elastic modulus and tensile strength increase 49.2% and 59.2%, compared with pristine EB; 2) The composite strain sensor exhibits high sensitivity (the gauge factor reaches up to 648.83 under strain range of 979.9-996.5%), and it still shows stable performance after 3000 cycles tests (100% strain); 3) It is a well candidate to be used for monitoring human body motions including large and subtle body movements; 4) The composite sensor also has advantages of easy access of raw materials, simple preparation, easy mass production and relatively low production cost, showing a broad application prospect in wearable electronic products.
