PURPOSE: To examine the reproducibility and sensitivity of a self-paced field running test (SFT) in monitoring positive and negative changes in endurance performance. METHODS: A total of 27 (11 women) recreational runners participated in a 6-week training intervention. The intervention was divided into a 3-week baseline period, a 2-week overload period, and a 1-week recovery period. An incremental treadmill test was performed before the baseline period and a 3000-m running test before and after all periods (T1-T4). In addition, the participants performed once a week an SFT (SFT1-6), which consisted of submaximal (6 + 6 + 3-min test at perceived exertion of 9/20, 13/20, and 17/20) and maximal sections (6 × 3-min intervals at maximum sustainable effort). The associations between the incremental treadmill test and the SFT1 performance were examined with the Pearson correlation, and the intraclass correlation was analyzed for the parameters of SFT1 to SFT3 sessions during the baseline period. The repeated-measures correlation was calculated for the 3000-m speed at T1 to T4 and the corresponding speeds at SFT. RESULTS: Significant associations (r = .68-.93; P < .001) were found between the speeds of the SFT and the peak and lactate threshold speeds of the incremental treadmill test. Intraclass correlations varied between .77 and .96, being the highest for the average speed of 6 × 3-minute intervals. Repeated-measures correlation was significant (P < .05) for the 9/20 (r = .24), 13/20 (r = .24), and 6 × 3-minute intervals (r = .29). CONCLUSIONS: The SFT seemed a reproducible method to estimate endurance performance in recreational runners. The sensitivity to track short-term and small-magnitude changes in performance seems more limited and might require more standardized conditions.

Orthostatic testing, involving the transition from different body positions (e.g., from lying or sitting position to an upright or standing position), offers valuable insights into the autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning and cardiovascular regulation reflected through complex adjustments in, e.g., measures of heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV). This narrative review explores the intricate physiological mechanisms underlying orthostatic stress responses and evaluates its significance for exercise science and sports practice. Into this matter, active orthostatic testing (e.g., active standing up) challenges the cardiovascular autonomic function in a different way than a passive tilt test. It is well documented that there is a transient reduction in blood pressure while standing up, leading to a reflex increase in HR and peripheral vasoconstriction. After that acute response systolic and diastolic blood pressures are usually slightly increased compared to supine lying body position. The ANS response to standing is initiated by instantaneous cardiac vagal withdrawal, followed by sympathetic activation and vagal reactivation over the first 25-30 heartbeats. Thus, HR increases immediately upon standing, peaking after 15-20 beats, and is less marked during passive tilting due to the lack of muscular activity. Standing also decreases vagally related HRV indices compared to the supine position. In overtrained endurance athletes, both parasympathetic and sympathetic activity are attenuated in supine and standing positions. Their response to standing is lower than in non-overtrained athletes, with a tendency for further decreased HRV as a sign of pronounced vagal withdrawal and, in some cases, decreased sympathetic excitability, indicating a potential overtraining state. However, as a significant main characteristic, it could be noted that additional pathophysiological conditions consist in a reduced responsiveness or counter-regulation of neural drive in ANS according to an excitatory stimulus, such as an orthostatic challenge. Hence, especially active orthostatic testing could provide additional information about HR(V) reactivity and recovery giving valuable insights into athletes' training status, fatigue levels, and adaptability to workload. Measuring while standing might also counteract the issue of parasympathetic saturation as a common phenomenon especially in well-trained endurance athletes. Data interpretation should be made within intra-individual data history in trend analysis accounting for inter-individual variations in acute responses during testing due to life and physical training stressors. Therefore, additional measures (e.g., psychometrical scales) are required to provide context for HR and HRV analysis interpretation. However, incidence of orthostatic intolerance should be evaluated on an individual level and must be taken into account when considering to implement orthostatic testing in specific subpopulations. Recommendations for standardized testing procedures and interpretation guidelines are developed with the overall aim of enhancing training and recovery strategies. Despite promising study findings in the above-mentioned applied fields, further research, thorough method comparison studies, and systematic reviews are needed to assess the overall perspective of orthostatic testing for training monitoring and fine-tuning of different populations in exercise science and training.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the acute and chronic effects of interval aerobic exercise on hepcidin, ferritin, and liver enzymes in adolescents with beta-thalassemia major. METHODS: Twenty-six beta-thalassemia major adolescents referred to the Thalassemia Clinic and Research Center were selected as study participants and randomly divided into control (n = 13) and training (n = 13) groups. Participants performed 3 sessions per week for 45 minutes in each session for 8 weeks of aerobic interval exercise with an intensity of 50% to 65% of the heart rate reserve. Blood samples were taken before, immediately after the exercise session, and 48 hours after the last training session, and liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), ferritin, and hepcidin were evaluated. RESULTS: The results showed a decrease in aspartate aminotransferase, ALT, ALP, ferritin, and hepcidin levels due to 8 weeks of aerobic interval training (P = .14, P = .97, P = .03, P < .001, P < .001; respectively). Intergroup changes in all variables except ALT and hepcidin were significant (P < .05). Besides, acute aerobic exercise increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase, ALT, ferritin, and hepcidin (P = .04, P = .52, P < .001, P < .001; respectively), whereas ALP levels decreased (P < .001). In addition, changes in ALP and hepcidin levels were significant between the 2 groups (P = .05, P < .001; respectively). CONCLUSION: Based on the study's results, it can be concluded that 8 weeks of aerobic interval training can decrease ferritin and hepcidin levels, but acute aerobic exercise increases them.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of endurance training (ET) in combination with MitoQ supplementation on antioxidant indices and the expression of sesterin-2 (SESN2) as an anti-aging factor and AMPK as an energy sensor in aged male Wistar rats. METHODS: Twenty-eight aged Wistar rats (410 ±â€¯15 g, 22 ±â€¯1.5 months old) were randomly divided into four groups (n = 7): Control, ET (eight weeks endurance training on the treadmill), MitoQ (250 µ/L in drinking water), and ET + MitoQ. We measured the protein and gene expression of SESN2 and AMPK in the heart tissue by western blotting and real-time PCR, respectively. In addition, antioxidant indices, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, and oxidant malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in the cardiac tissue and serum were measured. RESULTS: SESN2 and AMPK protein expression significantly increased in the MitoQ group compared to the control group (P = 0.002, P = 0.0003). MDA content in tissue and serum remained unchanged in all groups (P > 0.05). MitoQ supplementation significantly increased SOD and GPx enzyme activity in serum and cardiac tissue (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Overall, ET and MitoQ alone and in combination have anti-aging effects and improve the expression of AMPK and SESN2. Additionally, ET and MitoQ lead to improved antioxidant capacity in aged rats by ameliorating the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the precision and accuracy in measured blood lactate concentrations among four commonly used handheld lactate analyzers compared to two stationary analyzers. METHODS: Venous blood samples were taken at exercise intensities ranging from low to high. The blood lactate concentration was measured simultaneously with four pairs of handheld lactate analyzers (two new units of each brand: Lactate Plus, Lactate Pro2, Lactate Scout 4, and TaiDoc TD-4289), and compared with two stationary analyzers (Biosen C-Line and YSI Sport 1500). Measurements were repeated for a range of blood lactate concentrations (measured with Biosen) from 0.88 to 4.89 mM with a median difference between measurements of 0.10 mM. RESULTS: The mean relative differences to the Biosen analyzer were - 7% (Plus), 7% (Pro), - 10% (Scout), 42% (Tai), and - 32% (Ysi). The residual standard errors after linear regression against Biosen were 0.18 mM (Plus), 0.20 mM (Pro), 0.22 mM (Scout), 0.15 mM (Tai), and 0.06 mM (Ysi). Accordingly, a blood lactate concentration of 3 mM measured with Biosen yielded 95% prediction intervals that were 0.72 mM (Plus), 0.80 mM (Pro), 0.87 mM (Scout), 0.60 mM (Tai), and 0.23 mM (Ysi) wide. CONCLUSION: Compared to our two stationary analyzers, the precision of the four handheld lactate analyzers evaluated in this study was poor. Among the four, Tai was the most precise; however, this analyzer had low accuracy with a substantial mean difference to the reference analyzer.

BACKGROUND: Bradycardia is more common among well-trained athletes than in the general population, but the association with pacemaker implantations is less known. We investigated associations of endurance training with incidence of bradycardia and pacemaker implantations, including sex differences and long-term outcome, in a cohort of endurance trained individuals. METHODS: All Swedish skiers who completed >1 race in the cross-country skiing event Vasaloppet between 1989 and 2011 (n=209 108) and a sample of 532 290 nonskiers were followed until first event of bradycardia, pacemaker implantation, or death, depending on end point. The Swedish National Patient Register was used to obtain diagnoses. Cox regression was used to investigate associations of number of completed races and finishing time in Vasaloppet with incidence of bradycardia and pacemaker implantations. In addition, Cox regression was used to investigate associations of pacemaker implantations with death in skiers and nonskiers. RESULTS: Male skiers had a higher incidence of bradycardia (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.19 [95% CI, 1.05-1.34]) and pacemaker implantations (aHR, 1.17 [95% CI, 1.04-1.31]) compared with male nonskiers. Those who completed the most races and had the best performances exhibited the highest incidence. For female skiers in Vasaloppet, the incidence of bradycardia (aHR, 0.98 [95% CI, 0.75-1.30]) and pacemaker implantations (aHR, 0.98 [95% CI, 0.75-1.29]) was not different from that of female nonskiers. The indication for pacemaker differed between skiers and nonskiers, with sick sinus syndrome more common in the former and third-degree atrioventricular block in the latter. Skiers had lower overall mortality rates than nonskiers (aHR, 0.16 [95% CI, 0.15-0.17]). There were no differences in mortality rates by pacemaker status among skiers. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, male endurance skiers had a higher incidence of bradycardia and pacemaker implantations compared with nonskiers, a pattern not seen in women. Among male skiers, those who completed the most races and had the fastest finishing times had the highest incidence of bradycardia and pacemaker implantations. Within each group, mortality rates did not differ in relation to pacemaker status. These findings suggest that bradycardia associated with training leads to a higher risk for pacemaker implantation without a detrimental effect on mortality risk.

(1) Background: Physical activity may cause an imbalance in the major functions of the human body. This study aimed to investigate the effects of endurance running training on the parameters of the antioxidant defense system (SOD, CAT, GPx, GR, GSH), LPO (malondialdehyde, MDA), and stress hormones (A, NA) in young healthy, previously untrained men. (2) Methods: The training program was as follows: 8 weeks of running, three times per week; the duration of a single session was 30-70 min, the intensity was twice a week in the so-called extensive endurance zone, and once a week in the anaerobic threshold zone. Blood samples were collected from the subjects, before and after the running program. (3) Results: The training program resulted in a significant increase in maximal oxygen consumption (p < 0.001). The activities of SOD, GPx, and GR also increased significantly (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, and p < 0.05, respectively), while CAT activity and GSH and MDA concentrations remained unchanged. The concentration of A decreased (p < 0.05), while the NA concentration increased significantly (p < 0.05). SOD, GPx, GR, and NA positively correlated with VO2max (p < 0.05, p < 0.001, p < 0.01, p < 0.05, respectively), while a negative correlation was detected between A and VO2max (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: These results indicate that there is no persistent oxidative stress in response to the applied 8-week running program, probably due to exercise-induced protective alterations in the antioxidant defense system. Furthermore, adaptations occurred at the hormonal level, making the organism more ready for a new challenge.

(1) Background: Studies on injury prevention programs are lacking for triathletes. The aim of the present study was to describe the results of a holistic (injury) training prevention program (HITP), based on training load control and strength training, in elite triathletes. (2) Methods: The study was conducted over 2021-2023 and involved 18 males and 10 females from the same training group. The HITP itself included various methods of fatigue monitoring, strength training focused on the prevention of overuse injuries (OIs), cycling skills training, and recovery strategies. The total number and type of injuries that were sustained, subsequent training/competition absence time, and injury incidence were determined. (3) Results: Twenty-four injuries were recorded over all three seasons, i.e., 0.65 injuries per 1000 h of training and competition exposure. Fourteen injuries were traumatic injuries (TIs) and ten were OIs. Of the OIs, four were of minimal severity, two were mild, three were moderate, and one was severe (accounting for 1-3, 4-7, 8-28, and >28 days of training absenteeism, respectively). A total of 46.4% of the participants did not present any type of injury and 71,4% did not incur any OIs. Average absenteeism was 17.3 days per injury. (4) Conclusions: The HITP design and implementation resulted in low OI and severe injury incidence. Due to their unpredictable nature, the number of TIs was not reduced. The TIs were suffered more frequently by men. Women are more likely to suffer from OIs, so it is particularly important to prevent OIs in women.

This review investigates the effect of two different concurrent training sequences on endurance performance. The sequences investigated are Endurance-Resistance (ER) and Resistance-Endurance (RE). A literature search is conducted of the SPORTDiscus and Medline databases. The included studies are randomized control trials, which compare the effect of ER and RE on at least one endurance performance variable. A PEDro scale is used to assess the methodological quality of the articles in this review. Of a total of 152 articles identified during the initial screening, 15 studies meet the inclusion criteria. These studies include 426 participants (298 males and 128 females), with 212 of the participants training with ER and 214 with RE. The results are presented as the percentage change of the mean from pre- to post-test. All the studies show an improvement in endurance from pre to post for both interventions, except for the RE group in one study. This review finds small and non-conclusive sequence effects between ER and RE, suggesting that the sequence of concurrent training is not of great importance in relation to endurance performance.

Background and Objectives: There are typical differences in body composition and distribution of muscle fiber types between women and men. However, research investigating the effects of exercise based on sex differences is limited, and studies examining sex differences in physiological adaptations according to exercise type are scarce. We aimed to compare the effects of exercise types on muscle strength and body composition in men and women through a meta-analysis. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, and EBSCO databases. Keywords included "endurance training", "resistance training", "concurrent training", "muscle strength", "body composition", "sex characteristics", and "men and women". The standardized mean difference (SMD) was presented separately for men and women based on the pre- and post-intervention values for each exercise type. Results: Concurrent training showed the greatest effect on the increase in leg press muscle strength in men, and resistance training showed the greatest effect in women. Concurrent training showed the greatest effect size in both men and women in increasing bench press muscle strength. Resistance training and concurrent training showed a small effect size on lean mass reduction in both men and women. Endurance training and concurrent training significantly reduced fat mass in men. However, no significant changes in fat mass were observed in any exercise type among women. Conclusions: Concurrent training is the most efficient type of exercise for men, as it is effective in increasing upper- and lower-body muscle strength, increasing lean mass, and reducing fat mass. Resistance training is most effective in increasing muscle strength in females, whereas endurance training is most effective in reducing fat mass. However, it is difficult to corroborate these results because of the lack of study samples included in the analysis and the differences in exercise methods, participant age, and exercise duration.

Limited knowledge exists regarding the chronic effect of muscular exercise on muscle function in a murine model of severe Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Here we determined the effects of 1 month of voluntary wheel running (WR), 1 month of enforced treadmill running (TR) and 1 month of mechanical overloading resulting from the removal of the synergic muscles (OVL) in mice lacking both dystrophin and desmin (DKO). Additionally, we examined the effect of activin receptor administration (AR). DKO mice, displaying severe muscle weakness, atrophy and greater susceptibility to contraction-induced functional loss, were exercised or treated with AR at 1 month of age and in situ force production of lower leg muscle was measured at the age of 2 months. We found that TR and OVL increased absolute maximal force and the rate of force development of the plantaris muscle in DKO mice. In contrast, those of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle remained unaffected by TR and WR. Furthermore, the effects of TR and OVL on plantaris muscle function in DKO mice closely resembled those in mdx mice, a less severe murine DMD model. AR also improved absolute maximal force and the rate of force development of the TA muscle in DKO mice. In conclusion, exercise training improved plantaris muscle weakness in severely affected dystrophic mice. Consequently, these preclinical results may contribute to fostering further investigations aimed at assessing the potential benefits of exercise for DMD patients, particularly resistance training involving a low number of intense muscle contractions. KEY POINTS: Very little is known about the effects of exercise training in a murine model of severe Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). One reason is that it is feared that chronic muscular exercise, particularly that involving intense muscle contractions, could exacerbate the disease. In DKO mice lacking both dystrophin and desmin, characterized by severe lower leg muscle weakness, atrophy and fragility in comparison to the less severe DMD mdx model, we found that enforced treadmill running improved absolute maximal force of the plantaris muscle, while that of tibialis anterior muscle remained unaffected by both enforced treadmill and voluntary wheel running. Furthermore, mechanical overloading, a non-physiological model of chronic resistance exercise, reversed plantaris muscle weakness. Consequently, our findings may have the potential to alleviate concerns and pave the way for exploring the prescription of endurance and resistance training as a viable therapeutic approach for the treatment of dystrophic patients. Additionally, such interventions may serve in mitigating the pathophysiological mechanisms induced by physical inactivity.

PURPOSE: Training characteristics such as duration, frequency, and intensity can be manipulated to optimize endurance performance, with an enduring interest in the role of training-intensity distribution to enhance training adaptations. Training intensity is typically separated into 3 zones, which align with the moderate-, heavy-, and severe-intensity domains. While estimates of the heavy- and severe-intensity boundary, that is, the critical speed (CS), can be derived from habitual training, determining the moderate-heavy boundary or first threshold (T1) requires testing, which can be costly and time-consuming. Therefore, the aim of this review was to examine the percentage at which T1 occurs relative to CS. RESULTS: A systematic literature search yielded 26 studies with 527 participants, grouped by mean CS into low (11.5 km·h-1; 95% CI, 11.2-11.8), medium (13.4 km·h-1; 95% CI, 11.2-11.8), and high (16.0 km·h-1; 95% CI, 15.7-16.3) groups. Across all studies, T1 occurred at 82.3% of CS (95% CI, 81.1-83.6). In the medium- and high-CS groups, T1 occurred at a higher fraction of CS (83.2% CS, 95% CI, 81.3-85.1, and 84.2% CS, 95% CI, 82.3-86.1, respectively) relative to the low-CS group (80.6% CS, 95% CI, 78.0-83.2). CONCLUSIONS: The study highlights some uncertainty in the fraction of T1 relative to CS, influenced by inconsistent approaches in determining both boundaries. However, our findings serve as a foundation for remote analysis and prescription of exercise intensity, although testing is recommended for more precise applications.

Athletes use hypoxic living and training to increase hemoglobin mass (Hbmass), but Hbmass declines rapidly upon return to sea level. We investigated whether intermittent hypoxic exposure (IHE) + continuous hypoxic training (CHT) after return to sea level maintained elevated Hbmass, and if changes in Hbmass were transferred to changes in maximal oxygen uptake (V̇o2max) and exercise performance. Hbmass was measured in 58 endurance athletes before (PRE), after (POST1), and 30 days after (POST2) a 27 ± 4-day training camp in hypoxia (n = 44, HYP) or at sea level (n = 14, SL). After returning to sea level, 22 athletes included IHE (2 h rest) + CHT (1 h training) in their training every third day for 1 mo (HYPIHE + CHT), whereas the other 22 HYP athletes were not exposed to IHE or CHT (HYPSL). Hbmass increased from PRE to POST1 in both HYPIHE + CHT (4.4 ± 0.7%, means ± SE) and HYPSL (4.1 ± 0.6%) (both P < 0.001). Compared with PRE, Hbmass at POST2 remained 4.2 ± 0.8% higher in HYPIHE + CHT (P < 0.001) and 1.9 ± 0.5% higher in HYPSL (P = 0.023), indicating a significant difference between the groups (P = 0.002). In SL, no significant changes were observed in Hbmass with mean alterations between -0.5% and 0.4%. V̇o2max and time to exhaustion during an incremental treadmill test (n = 35) were elevated from PRE to POST2 only in HYPIHE + CHT (5.8 ± 1.2% and 5.4 ± 1.4%, respectively, both P < 0.001). IHE + CHT possesses the potential to mitigate the typical decline in Hbmass commonly observed during the initial weeks after return to sea level.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Sets of 2-h intermittent hypoxic exposure + 1-h continuous hypoxic training, every third day, possess the potential to mitigate the typical decline in Hbmass that is commonly observed during the initial weeks after return to sea level from an altitude camp. Inclusion of IHE + CHT in the training regimen was also accompanied by improvements in V̇o2max and exercise performance in most but not all Tier 3-Tier 5 level endurance athletes during the training season.

In one of a recent series of papers from MoTrPAC, Nair et al. provide the first multi-epigenomic and transcriptomic integration across eight tissues in both sexes following adaptation to endurance exercise training (EET).

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is non-progressive brain damage that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. CP is associated with poor physical fitness, which is linked to health problems and the development of secondary illnesses like obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Compared to healthy peers without CP, children with CP have considerably lower VO2 peaks, which reduces their performance and aerobic capacity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate changes in exercise capacity and endurance among children with CP, as well as fatigue levels among their parents and caregivers, after participation in cardiovascular endurance training. METHODOLOGY: This study included 16 children aged 7-12 years with CP (Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I, II, or III). Participants completed a 12-week cardiovascular endurance program consisting of 60-minute sessions three times weekly designed to achieve 64-95% of their heart rate maximum,based on the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines. Pre- and post-intervention measurements were recorded for the following: distance covered in a six-minute walk, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) level, Early Activity Scale for Endurance rating, and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pediatric Fatigue Scale score and PROMIS Parent Proxy Scale and Fatigue Scale scores.  Result: Upon completing the cardiovascular endurance training, the distance covered during a six-minute walk improved by 20.95 points, resting heart rate by 5.19 points, VO2 max by 0.06 points, Early Activity Scale for Endurance by 4.06 points, PROMIS Pediatric Fatigue Scale by 7.29 points, PROMIS Parent Proxy Scale by 6.81 points, and PROMIS Fatigue Scale by 5.07 points. The maximum heart rate also showed a slight improvement of 0.33 points (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: A structured exercise protocol aimed at improving cardiovascular endurance can benefit children with CP by improving their exercise capacity and endurance, which in turn can help decrease fatigue levels among their parents and caregivers.

There are various categorization models of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in the literature that need to be more consistent in definition, terminology, and concept completeness. In this review, we present a training goal-oriented categorization model of HIIT, aiming to find the best possible consensus among the various defined types of HIIT. This categorization concludes with six different types of HIIT derived from the literature, based on the interaction of interval duration, interval intensity and interval:recovery ratio. We discuss the science behind the defined types of HIIT and shed light on the possible effects of the various types of HIIT on aerobic, anaerobic, and neuromuscular systems and possible transfer effects into competition performance. We highlight various research gaps, discrepancies in findings and not yet proved know-how based on a lack of randomized controlled training studies, especially in well-trained to elite athlete cohorts. Our HIIT "toolbox" approach is designed to guide goal-oriented training. It is intended to lay the groundwork for future systematic reviews and serves as foundation for meta-analyses.

PURPOSE: This study compared the effects of polarized running training adapted to the menstrual cycle (MC) phases versus polarized training adapted contrary to the MC on endurance performance and cardiovascular parameters. METHODS: Thirty-three naturally menstruating, moderately trained females (age: 26 ± 4 years; BMI: 22.3 ± 3.2 kg/m2; V ˙ O2max/rel: 40.35 ± 4.61 ml/min/kg) were randomly assigned to a control (CON) and intervention (INT) group. Both groups participated in a load-matched eight-week running training intervention. In the INT, high-intensity sessions were aligned with the mid and late follicular phase, low-intensity sessions with the early and mid-luteal phase, and recovery with the late luteal and early follicular phase. In the CON, high-intensity sessions were matched to the late luteal and early follicular phase, and recovery to the mid and late follicular phase. Endurance performance and cardiovascular parameters were assessed at baseline and after the intervention. RESULTS: Twenty-six females completed the intervention. A repeated measures ANOVA determined no time × group interaction effect for any parameter. A significant time effect was found for maximal oxygen uptake (F(1,12) = 18.753, p = 0.005, ηp2 = 0.630), the velocity at the ventilatory threshold one (F(1,12) = 10.704, p = 0.007, ηp2 = 0.493) and two (F(1,12) = 7.746, p = .018, ηp2 = .413). CONCLUSION: The training intervention improved endurance performance in both groups, with no further benefit observed from the MC-adapted polarized training in a group-based analysis. Replications with an extended intervention period, a larger sample size, and a more reliable MC determination are warranted.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different volumes of aerobic training (AT) and resistance training (RT) during a concurrent exercise training program on selected indicators of physical fitness and pulmonary function in women with spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: Twenty-three inactive females with complete or incomplete SCI from T6 to L5 were divided into three groups: concurrent training with a focus on AT (CTAT; two weekly sessions of AT and one of RT), concurrent training with a focus on RT (CTRT; two weekly sessions of RT and one of AT), and control (CON). Tests were performed before and after an 8-week experimental period for indicators of pulmonary function, aerobic power, endurance performance, muscular strength and endurance, speed, and change of direction. Results: Markers of both aerobic and muscular fitness increased in the CTAT and CTRT groups, but not in CON. There were significant differences in aerobic power and endurance performance between the CTAT and CTRT groups, with greater changes in CTAT. Both CTAT and CTRT improved respiratory functions, with no differences between them (p > 0.05). Conclusions: CTAT and CTRT improved most of the indicators of physical fitness. However, CTAT should be used to achieve higher aerobic power and endurance without compromising muscle strength.

Fatty acids (FAs) are an essential component of the erythrocyte membrane, and nutrition and physical exercise are two variables that affect their structure and function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the erythrocyte profile in a group of high-level endurance runners, as well as the changes in different FAs, throughout a sports season in relation to the training performed. A total of 21 high-level male endurance runners (23 ± 4 years; height: 1.76 ± 0.05) were evaluated at four different times throughout a sports season. The athletes had at least 5 years of previous experience and participated in national and international competitions. The determination of the different FAs was carried out by gas chromatography. The runners exhibited low concentrations of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and omega-3 index (IND ω-3), as well as high values of stearic acid (SA), palmitic acid (PA), and arachidonic acid (AA), compared to the values of reference throughout the study. In conclusion, training modifies the erythrocyte FA profile in high-level endurance runners, reducing the concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as DHA and AA and increasing the concentrations of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) such as SA and the PA. High-level endurance runners should pay special attention to the intake of PUFAs ω-3 in their diet or consider supplementation during training periods to avoid deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) has serious physical consequences for children such as behavioral disabilities, growth disorders, neuromuscular problems, impaired motor coordination, and decreased muscle tone. However, it is not known whether loss of muscle strength occurs, and which interventions will effectively mitigate physical PAE impairments. We aimed to investigate whether physical alteration persists during adolescence and whether exercise is an effective intervention. RESULTS: Using paradigms to evaluate different physical qualities, we described that early adolescent PAE animals have significant alterations in agility and strength, without alterations in balance and coordination compared to CTRL animals. We evaluated the effectiveness of 3 different exercise protocols for 4 weeks: Enrichment environment (EE), Endurance exercise (EEX), and Resistance exercise (REX). The enriched environment significantly improved the strength in the PAE group but not in the CTRL group whose strength parameters were maintained even during exercise. Resistance exercise showed the greatest benefits in gaining strength, and endurance exercise did not. CONCLUSION: PAE induced a significant decrease in strength compared to CTRL in PND21. Resistance exercise is the most effective to reverse the effects of PAE on muscular strength. Our data suggests that individualized, scheduled, and supervised training of resistance is more beneficial than endurance or enriched environment exercise for adolescents FASD.
